I'm using a eufyCam 3 (S330) in combi with a HomeBase3.The eufyCam has no datastorage whatsoever, the recordings are encrypted and stored in the HomeBase only. If you press the reset on the camera it restores the original setting, but doesn't delete anything on the HomeBase. So what is your problem?
has it though? I just got 2 cams and reading through the software agreement and it has me concerned. they give themselves the access to everything and if you dont agree you can't set up the cams
So, I have many EUFY cameras. Most of mine are high up enough. However, I also have the HomeBase3, which downloads the video locally to HB3 from the new 4K outdoor cameras. The other EUFY cameras will get an update to do the same. Hitting the reset button sucks, but should be a non-issue once other cameras get the update and only if you have the HB3. The other security issues, that's another thing.
I lost internet at my cabin in NC. It took me 3 months to get it back working; the cameras still recorded 24/7. I use the Indoor Cam S350 for outdoors just make sure they stay dry; their 4K is nice and tracking is much better than their other cameras. When I got to the cabin I was able to view all the data on the home base - then again my local wireless was still operating; I will try to see and reset one of the cameras if I loose its history on the home base.
Well this sucks. For the time being, I suppose I'll have to let them steal whatever they want, considering there aren't any alternatives that check all the boxes. I need 1. local storage (no subscriptions) 2. continuous recording 3. remote access 4. Wi-Fi 5. 2-way audio 6. High res/fps 7. decent night video
Im in I.T. - I have always said two things: 1. Worrying about security on windows is like complaining about a leaking sink on the Titanic. 2. Never put anything in free email that you wouldnt put on a postcard.
@@glynnetolar4423 Glad you asked. First off, These camera's will not work unless you have the app installed on your phone. Therefore the cams are totally dependent on your phone app. Should you get some type of phone upgrade and the app not work then you no longer have a camera. Now, Most of these cams depend on windows. Not this one though it seems. Windows sells your data to 3rd parties. You do not want your personal info out on the web. Next, The cams that depend on windows will not work unless you have the right drivers and the cam companies will end up holding your pics hostage and want you to subscribe to access your pics. The ideal cam is operating system independent (i.e. windows, linux, Apple) and does not depend on proprietary software to operate.
Respect for dropping a sponsor when you found this out and informing your viewers! Also, Few months ago I watched a true scary story channel, with videos, showing Amazon home security cameras/speakers getting hacked.
This is exactly why I have wired cameras. I also have all the wires hidden so no one can gain access to them to disable the cameras. Wireless cameras are nice, but with everything broadcasted, it's prone to hacking and interference. Good Job Jeff catching this and bringing it to our attention👍
@@mrniusi11 The only time I would not agree with you is in large apartment complexes. There will always be some scummy dude trying to see if they can hack your indoor cams.
So, people who are at the street intending to nefarious things have to: 1. Identify you have a camera 2. Decide they will commit whichever crime anyways 3. Know that Eufy has this flaw 4. Identify your camera as Eufy from far enough to mot be identified 5. Commit said crime even while the camera has alerted the owner 6. Then access the camera 7. Press the reset button to delete all info associated with their crime 8. Exit the scene The point of a security sustem is not to lock down a house and prevent crime, it is intended to discourage crime by making it inconvenient to the criminal. No system is fool proof. If the criminal is that worried, they would destroy your camera, break into your house and destroy your storage system. Again, make crime inconvenient, not prevent it entirely.
Not a criminal, are you? The main attraction of security solutions is to gather evidence. Compare the height, build, and motion patterns of a criminal to past recordings and narrow down suspects. Share findings with law enforcement. ..only a non-criminal would think that a camera deters crime. They don't. That's not what these things are designed to do. These things are firstly designed to capture evidence, secondly to provide you with a live view of what is going on for safety sake. Call it "security" or "surveillance", but certainly not "deterrence". It is only a mere coincidence that any criminal might be deterred. You know what we own for deterrence? Guns. With little stickers on the windows that state "this home is armed" with the silhouette of a handgun. How many criminal events have we had? 0 How many have I lived through in my life? 5 (3 burglaries, 2 armed.) But hey, defend the faulty products. It's hip to be an edgelord, people will love it.
I get your point, but you are not actually putting yourself in the shoes of someone who needs to commit theft. The key word being: “need”. I am guessing you don’t live in a city, with neighbors and strangers who would habitually have vantage points onto areas you want to protect. The level of paranoia you are skeptical of, is just what we call “being vigilant” when living in a densely populated zone with pedestrian-level crime. Also, It doesnt take a genius to read “Eufy” label on the side of a camera… I live around the corner from a Laundromat where there is a lot of back and forth foot traffic directly in front of my front door. I get packages delivered to my doorstep. Some were stolen from me today. Unfortunately I don’t have any security system yet, but from a consumer perspective alone I definitely wouldn’t purchase one with an “off switch”. So It’s really not a stretch of the imagination to imagine someone determined to make a buck going through the “hassle” of noticing cameras, and googling the ways to disengage them. I agree that the cameras act as a deterrent, but the issue in question here is just dreadful design that defeats the purpose of investing in a system that provides peace of mind.
Saved me from falling into the EUFY trap. Do you have a video that covers the extremely few security cameras that can be trusted and only store locally in your house? No snooping, no stealing data and no subscriptions. Better yet if it can be controlled by Home Assistant instead of relying on the maker’s software.
Eufy have fixed ALL of the encryption problems and the reset button problems, to my knowledge... I bought the three camera system with the home base and I really wish I would have known all of this information before I dropped damn near $1,000 for this system (I also ordered a 2TB SSD to install in the home base) And I did some research but none of this information that I've heard from you came up. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough. Thank you for the information, I appreciate it. ~Jonny5🥁
Hi, I have a question want to ask you. I just bought a Eufy home base 2 with two cams because I live in a shared house, and try to keep myself safe. After setting up the Euty cams, I opened the devices, and I didn't add any people to my account. But I found out my housemate's phone will get the message sounds at the same time as I get the notification of the Euty camera. I checked so many times no one was in my account. Is this possible he checking what is in my camera? I am so scared now, please help me up. Thanks
If you have a camera and it's connected to an internet source in any way shape or form, you basically have this same "Eufy" problem. All the cameras steal your data, unless you keep them off the net and store locally. Ring/Amazon has been sending their data to Ukraine to help train the UI, even the indoor cams. They also can give your data to law enforcement without your consent. Iphone tracks you even when the battery is dead. Android phones keep getting caught with hardware that sends all the info to China. The smart TV's keep getting caught for recording in your house. The new Vacuum robots are now adding cameras and guess where that data goes. Almost all new cars track your GPS and Usage data now. Heck, even stores track your walking habits using wifi to ping your phone. Only thing less secure than your home internet is bluetooth.
That "reset camera deletes external recordings" thing is crazy, and the "dump stuff on s3 with no authentication" is inexcusable. Some of this looks overblown (yeah, you can get your own images off the cloud if you are uploading them there and you use an API call to get the URL - would be better if it required a token that's not in the URL, but unless it's discoverable without the authenticated API call, it's not a big problem) but half of doing privacy right is the appearance of it, too.
A proper security camera setup should be run off a 2nd router system, NOT your main wireless. This means pay for Ip addresses, set them up to NOT stream to the net/net storage. You should have all your "internet of things" on this wireless, and only this wireless. This way nothing can back hack into your home network. Cameras under the best of conditions should be HARD WIRED and not wireless.
@@jackthomas2051 vlan is ok, but doesn't offer back protection nor is it any kind of firewall. If you do not have it coupled with your firewall, a vlan does nothing for you.
@@user.A9 nope, you run a 2nd router. So from your internet router (comcast, etc...) you put in a 4 port switch, you run one to one router, one to the other. You pay your ISP for 2 IP addresses, setting each router to one. Also don't use the "router" provided by your ISP, they are ALL junk. Buy your own and run that.
Any untrusted device ahould be connected only to a second router. And by untrusted I mean things like generic Android TV boxes with questionable pedigree and no updates, generic tablet computers, wifi kitchen appliances, and all the other IoT things.
All my outdoor battery cameras are where I need a ladder to access them the wired ones are mounted with screws. Now you can save footage to the homebase 3 from any camera with the new updates to the application, plus if it a wired camera that can run constantly with no battery you can record to your homebase 3 hard drive 24/7. It appears this issue has been fixed.
Really no big deal to me. Like you said ALL big companies are getting hacked. For that matter any security system is vulnerable. I'd rather have my stuff stored on my drive than in a cloud that any hacker can access. And for that matter a black can of spray paint will disabled any security system camera. Still a good system for what you get.
Thank you for this video! Very insightful and helpful. I was contemplating getting a Eufy security camera. Is there a brand you would recommend that will not compromise user's privacy? Another vlogger mentioned Reolink. What about Arlo?
I live by a couple of principles when it comes to digital security. 1. Security and convenience are mutually exclusive. The easy to set up and access devices have huge security flaws in them and it’s a matter of time when your system gets exploited. 2. If you don’t own the hardware, the data stored on it isn’t yours. “You own your cloud” is the biggest crock I’ve ever heard.
The RESET button needs to be within on foot of the home base to reset. The two units communicate via sound transfer. Just to let you know as for the other information thanks. I didnt know they were doing this
Thanks for the heads up. It stinks when a company selling so-called SECURITY cameras handle your stuff in anything BUT a secure way. THEY are not secure themselves!
A couple things... 1: just don't do cloud storage. 1.a: even if using local storage with Eufy, the alerts are not being processed locally (except the newest version) and are sending those to the cloud... Which is outright misleading as they say it can be only local. 2.: while Anker could in theory be doing something USB wise, it's highly unlikely as someone would have noticed a comm device in the units, and enough techies use them that they'd notice if it tried doing something on a device. That's not 100% but it's highly unlikely. My take is that Euify had to stay competitive and deployed systems without doing the due diligence of having them audited and tested. I don't think it was intentional to steal data. It's still possible of course, but we'll see. The whole button reset thing? Holy Hillary that's just ignorant. My Dahua cameras do password resets via the cloud, but I also block them from the internet unless I need that feature 🤣
I got rid of my newly purchased Eufy system 2 days ago. The reason? It failed to detect anyone entering my garden. The reason? Eufy themselves told me only the bottom half of the viewed images is monitored for motion detection! 😳 The only way round this was to lower the camera and raise the angle. Meaning you’re not looking down on your property but across it. It also means anyone 6’ and above can reach the camera! Absolute joke! As was there customer service.
Or, you read the manual on how the motion detection works and how far it will detect. My garden is fully visible and I’m aware only half of it will trigger the motion. Still gives me plenty of reach to tune in and let the alarm go off in case of an intruder
@@Diablo97810 Or you read the manual, then speak to their support team, then return it cause it’s not up to snuff. Then you replace it with something that works perfectly fine without compromises on height and viewing angle. 👍
Glad to have found this as I was about to order a EUFY sec. camera. So what ARE your recommendations? Does a sec. camera company exist that is not stealing our private information?
Nice bit of scaremongering. The camera-reset-delete-videos thing is about the only thing that could actually be exploited by non-nation-state sponsored threat actors. And sure, it's not great. But all this "get the pitchforks for all Anker products" is a bit sad
for the easily pressed reset button, try attaching a cap over the button with a small pinhole in it so u can still press it with a pin? would make it harder for anyone to just press the button
I started getting nervous when you mentioned the facial recognition feature. An inexpensive system means that tech is living on a cloud server instead of locally, and processing our video remotely. I've got a smart speaker, and it's doing the same thing with my voice commands. Thank you for doing the research and letting us know insecure they're storing that data.
FYI, if ya didn't know yet, Big brother is everywhere. Cameras are EVERYWHERE. I don't think I would waisted my time worrying with any outside camera. I would more worry about a system where the cameras were streaming what's going on INSIDE my home.
I looked into the problem of pressing the button and deleting everything. If you re-install the deleted camera everything that was previously saved will still be on the home base unit.
First off as a professional camera installer you should NEVER have a camera in reach of anyone no need to. For rookie camera users this is just fine get a ladder and put it 8 to 10 feet up!
Very disappointing since I just switched to the Eufy cam 3 system and doorbell two months ago. Product works extremely well and is very responsive. It will take me a few weeks to decide on a replacement system and it is well past the return period. I'll probably on get half back on the $700 I spent on the two, cameras, base and doorbell.
Did you decide on returning it yet or did you keep it? The reason I ask is because I just spent $1,100 from Best Buy today on three (3) of Eufy’s newer 4K, outside cameras with the solar panel on them, along with the “dual camera” doorbell camera. Since I am still within the return policy of course, I want to know so that I can have options. I already have four (4) of Eufy’s indoor 2K Pan & Tilt camera angled at sensitive areas such as the entrances and inside the garage, and they’ve worked greatly for about two years. Reason I spent $1,100 more today was to add to my Eufy ecosystem for the exterior so that everything could be in one app, rather than having to operate 2-3 apps to look at all my cameras. Hopefully I didn’t make a mistake.
Placing sound deafening ear buds in your ear while you sleep is a terrible idea! What if there’s an alarm that’s triggered? Whether it’s a fire or intruder alert, you want to be able to hear and respond.
Sorry to hear that about Anker - I've bought my last thing from them. I ALMOST bought one of their solar generators, but opted for something else. I have liked many of their products in the past, but this is a serious serious moral transgression, and they cannot be trusted.
This is why IoT devices like this are banned from my house. Nothing like a "security" camera to be a great access point to your internal network. Physical connections or go home. It's pretty bad when even the smart TV makers tell you to run anti-virus software on it.
Remember back (only about 25 + years ago and beyond) when we were still concerned that our siblings may be listening in to our conversations,, nowadays our phone are listening to us. 😆
An ex coworker gave me two Bluetooth speakers for some reason, they are soundcore motion q the one looks like it has a camera on it whats the issue with the soundcore anker products
9:07 I think they’re using AWS SageMaker for the AI/machine learning. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re stealing your data. They’re simply uploading the data to run their machine learning process for recognition UI functionality. I don’t even have a Eufy camera, but I’ve worked with AWS Redshift and AWS Sagemaker. It’s doesn’t store your data, just a tool to aggregate/speed up processing for AI/machine learning programs.
The data eufy takes is data you give them, as in they have a program where you "donate" footage and you get some credit on your eufy account. You kinda need this data for AI recognition on ANY platform if its gonna be even remotely decent. The reset button thing could be an issue for for some, imo its a hassle and youd need a ladder for most. And already caught by then since you get notified quickly.
I never trusted any wireless cameras. My security cameras are hardwired, and the storage server is not , NOT, network connected. Maybe a little less convenient, but it can't get out of my home.
A comment along these lines is, most cellphone, streaming players like Apple TV, Roku, even Dish, DirectTV, ""Listen"" and create a cache or cookie profile of you. They gather your searches from browsers like Google as well as spoken words it hears then "Feeds" similar things to you in your feed. These wifi listeners inside and around your home is an invasion of privacy.
I have been using Tapo and its cloud service, now I'm thinking if ever my camera is stolen and a reset is done - will it erase also my cloud recordings?
So glad I saw this video. I was seriously contemplating dropping around $2,000 AUD on a 4 pack of their 2k solar cameras. Not sure what I do now, but wired seems best?
The truth is a bit less sensational tbh, the way they did it is secure but easily crackable if they had the physical device. Still don’t trust anker either way tho

Thats bad indeed, but when you use Apple HomeKit secure Video with iCloud, you have the Videos stored on iCloud so there is no problem, when the camera is deleted or restetted.
well you can say that for all other brands... if you think you're safe with another system you are going to be a fool. i wonder do if you can simply block these connections within your router/firewall on outgoing/incoming traffic that data is not send.

I wonder if this issue was patched since he recorded this video?

has it though? I just got 2 cams and reading through the software agreement and it has me concerned. they give themselves the access to everything and if you dont agree you can't set up the cams
I just got the same problem. Can't sync it to the homemade anymore or reset it. Didn't last even one year...
They now have resolved this problem. The released updated that keeps the storage even when camera is offline.

I need
1. local storage (no subscriptions)
2. continuous recording
3. remote access
4. Wi-Fi
5. 2-way audio
6. High res/fps
7. decent night video
Im in I.T. - I have always said two things: 1. Worrying about security on windows is like complaining about a leaking sink on the Titanic. 2. Never put anything in free email that you wouldnt put on a postcard.
I'm in IT also. These didn't run windows. What's your point?
He should not have taken a Chinese company as a sponsor in the first place.
Assume any camera, or other IOT device, can be hacked. They have some of the worst dev security I've ever seen.
This is exactly why I have wired cameras. I also have all the wires hidden so no one can gain access to them to disable the cameras.
Wireless cameras are nice, but with everything broadcasted, it's prone to hacking and interference.
Good Job Jeff catching this and bringing it to our attention👍

So, people who are at the street intending to nefarious things have to:
1. Identify you have a camera
2. Decide they will commit whichever crime anyways
3. Know that Eufy has this flaw
4. Identify your camera as Eufy from far enough to mot be identified
5. Commit said crime even while the camera has alerted the owner
6. Then access the camera
7. Press the reset button to delete all info associated with their crime
8. Exit the scene
The point of a security sustem is not to lock down a house and prevent crime, it is intended to discourage crime by making it inconvenient to the criminal.
5 (3 burglaries, 2 armed.)
But hey, defend the faulty products.
Also, It doesnt take a genius to read “Eufy” label on the side of a camera…
I live around the corner from a Laundromat where there is a lot of back and forth foot traffic directly in front of my front door.
Have they fixed these issues since finding out all this?
Saved me from falling into the EUFY trap.
Do you have a video that covers the extremely few security cameras that can be trusted and only store locally in your house?
No snooping, no stealing data and no subscriptions. Better yet if it can be controlled by Home Assistant instead of relying on the maker’s software.
Eufy have fixed ALL of the encryption problems and the reset button problems, to my knowledge... I bought the three camera system with the home base and I really wish I would have known all of this information before I dropped damn near $1,000 for this system
(I also ordered a 2TB SSD to install in the home base)

How has it been serving you so far? Planning to get it as an option.
Thanks
What's the best alternative to a local only camera? Is there anything similar to eufy that's trustworthy?
if your so worried then dont get anything that's connected to the internet. get a DVR system
All of my IoT is in a separate VLAN.
@@jackthomas2051 vlan is ok, but doesn't offer back protection nor is it any kind of firewall. If you do not have it coupled with your firewall, a vlan does nothing for you.
Guest network?
@@user.A9 nope, you run a 2nd router. So from your internet router (comcast, etc...) you put in a 4 port switch, you run one to one router, one to the other. You pay your ISP for 2 IP addresses, setting each router to one.
Also don't use the "router" provided by your ISP, they are ALL junk. Buy your own and run that.
Any untrusted device ahould be connected only to a second router. And by untrusted I mean things like generic Android TV boxes with questionable pedigree and no updates, generic tablet computers, wifi kitchen appliances, and all the other IoT things.
In my neighborhood car thieves have used WiFi jammers before they approached the cars to disable cameras while they crab a car.
You are becoming a very important channel. You are extremely intelligent and seem to have a grasp on many technologies other than tools. Keep it up.
You can configure router to disallow access from ouside sources. Doesnt need to be stored in the cloud.
YOU are the product. Never forget.
What port are they using to transfer the data. Can you block the port on the router ?
Thanks for the heads up I have to buy a few new cameras and I know what companies to stay away from keep up the great content
the alternative is a local cctv? if so what is a good company?
The RESET button needs to be within on foot of the home base to reset. The two units communicate via sound transfer. Just to let you know as for the other information thanks. I didnt know they were doing this
so outside ppl cant reset n delete?
Thanks for the heads up. It stinks when a company selling so-called SECURITY cameras handle your stuff in anything BUT a secure way. THEY are not secure themselves!
Do you see any problems with Arlo cameras?
I thought about buying this eufy camera because of the solar panel built in.
Expensive and require a subscription to really use them.

Nice bit of scaremongering. The camera-reset-delete-videos thing is about the only thing that could actually be exploited by non-nation-state sponsored threat actors. And sure, it's not great. But all this "get the pitchforks for all Anker products" is a bit sad
How do you make a VLAN for these cameras, I cannot find a lot of info about it
What camera is good with cellular ability.?
for the easily pressed reset button, try attaching a cap over the button with a small pinhole in it so u can still press it with a pin? would make it harder for anyone to just press the button
If the footage is stored locally and not in the cloud why would you expect to still have footage after the camera is destroyed or reset ?
I recently replaced my Eufy Doorbell Camera for a Reolink, but that was mainly to make it the same as my other Reolink cameras.
Wired cameras, record to a system you control. It is a lot more work but if you value your privacy you need to do the work.
This flaw has been rectified!

Hey! Now then, 1 year later. What do you think of their products?
I’ve never had a problem with their products. And they have finally addressed the issues with the software.
I have an older Eufy system that's been pretty good for the price... they'd need a 10' ladder to access mine...
Don't need a ladder when you have a .22 and scope.
Are you recommending Wyze ?
Just segment the camera's off the WAN which will block internet access. It will be just within the LAN and that should be ok?

If Eufy has local storage via it's home base then why do you need the cloud storage?
9:07 I think they’re using AWS SageMaker for the AI/machine learning. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re stealing your data. They’re simply uploading the data to run their machine learning process for recognition UI functionality.
I don’t even have a Eufy camera, but I’ve worked with AWS Redshift and AWS Sagemaker. It’s doesn’t store your data, just a tool to aggregate/speed up processing for AI/machine learning programs.
UPDATE - Eufy just told me that this issue is now sorted. Do you know if that's true?
What if I don’t have a homebase and I’m running it directly from my Wi-Fi?
So what video camera doorbell WIRELESS do you suggest?
Wyze
WHY DO YOU SUGGEST WYZE. WHY IS IT BETTER THAN EUFY@@denoftools
Does this only apply if using cloud storage? I don’t use cloud storage so am I secure?
Is there any way to change your wifi without climbing the ladder every time. I got 10 cameras
I had a very purchased some of these cameras in the past, do you think we can sue them or something class action?
I have been using Tapo and its cloud service, now I'm thinking if ever my camera is stolen and a reset is done - will it erase also my cloud recordings?
Do the video recordings still get erased if the camera is reset or/and stolen? I heard this was a problem not too long ago.

Wyze had security issues also with their cameras. If I recall, Ring and Arlo had similar issues in their startup days. In any case, it's not like these companies didn't fix their vulnerabilities. They all took steps and changed their software and hardware to address the problems.
