Awesome, love the box exercises. It's like baby steps. I can do pistol squats pretty easily on my right leg but not even close on my left leg! I'm super imbalanced. I'll be using these exercises to get my left leg stronger to improve my figure skating. It's definitely a sport where you have to be able to pistol squat on both legs! Thank you for the tips!!
Sorry Ben...you missed one important aspect of the pistol for the older athlete...being able to bend over at the hip enough to balance! It's called OLD MAN disease! :-) My dorsiflection at the ankle is surprisingly good and single leg strength is pretty good too. Reaching out to grab your toe at the bottom of a pistol??? I'm at least 12" away from doing that. My workout partner tried to push on my back to get me in the correct position at the bottom of a pistol. I just don't bend that way. Same reason I suck at T2B BTW. The only way I've found to compensate is to hold a light KB or DB out in front of me as I go down as a counter balance. (which of course makes the movement even harder!) Or often I'll just grab onto a band hanging from pullup bar. Neither of which are acceptable standards. Oh well...started this great hobby a little too late in life. But keep up the great video tips!!

Also, try spending time in a single leg loaded squat position - time under tension is going to be key. So I bought this girl a workout tip guide to grow the booty and she has pistols squats and single leg sits on this workout guide. But you're saying that this is only for competition and sport strength, so my question is does this pistols really do anything for the butt?
uhm.. not functional? It's literally stabilizer core balancing. It's the best quad workout you can do for working on core balance. If your knees can't take it, then fine, don't do it. But if they can and you can't do them. Then work on them until you can.

There's something you missed...hip and ankle mobility. Without those two things, a pistol squat will never happen.

Those did not look like pistols. From what I have seen your ass needs to be below your knee. This was more like a single leg squat.
