- Part 2 of our Apple iPad Mini install in the dash of a car (or in this case or Dodge RAM). This iPad mini is seamlessly integrated into the dash and slides in and out with ease.
* * NOTE: We get asked a lot of questions about MAGNETS (i.e. why don't you use magnets for your installations?). We don't use magnets because magnets are NOT SAFE. We have seen iPad installs fly off the dash in 2nd gear because the magnets are not string enough. Only a integrated kit like this will ensure a safe and proper install. * *
The great thing about this type of install is that...
1) the iPad can be inserted/removed very easy.
2) it is fully integrated with the car stereo system.
3) It is secure and won't fall out of the cradle while driving.
The video talks about how we made the dash kit and finished it to look just like the OEM piece.

Thanks! You know I have searched for 2 solid days, and have not found one single person that has either done this to external monitors, or ask about it even. I have to be missing something while searching! LOL
Correct. We made sure the snap ins were all still strong and unmodified from removal. We can go back and add the screws if it starts having fitment issues. The iPad is much lighter then the stock radio so the screws are no longer a must.

You can connect your iPad Mini to your stereo via 3.5mm headphone jack for audio and connect the USB to charge it (if it works). Then, you can stuff the headunit in your glove box or under the seat and set it to AUX mode. From there, your iPad will play through the JVC radio and charge.
This is mental!!! I’ve bought an iPad mini and a spare centre console to give this a go!
An iStreamer takes the digital signal and turns it into analog. The headphone jack is analog, and the end of the iStreamer is also analog when it connects to a stereo. There might be a small difference, but it won't be "HUGE". Try it using the AUX route and if you think it should sound a lot better, then go with the iStreamer and see if there is a difference.
That is WAY cool! Can't wait till the aftermarket catches up to have dash kits ready and available.
The DRC of the Bit One gives you full control of your system. As for going from iPad Mini to Optical Toslink, that will be a weird path. You would have to find a Lightning to Toslink converter, which we have not yet seen. If not, you have to go from the lightning connector to RCA or 3.5mm to Toslink and that just gets noisy.
Absolutely, we can make a tablet fit in just about any vehicle. It wouldn't be the same dash kit shown in the video, but we can custom build a kit for your Durango np.
Not a problem! Keep in mind that you want an adapter that will output video and still charge the iPad. :)
They should make Lightning to VGA or HDMI adapters, just do a google search. From there you can buy a video splitter box to connect two or more monitors.
You won't find much luck for people doing it to their vehicles so you are on your own for finding out the best method to make it work. It will be a bit of a fuss but cool in the end. Google is only helpful if the content is there. :)

Custom installs of this caliber tend to start at $1200 and up depending on your vehicle and what you want done.

The only way to retain all of that is to keep your stock headunit and use the iPad merely as an MP3 player using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Trying to retain everything is going to require special apps that are not likely made.

It is certainly possible with an iPod touch, but the iPad would be a bit more practical and will fill in the rest of the dash. It's worth a shot though! :]
Doug must love that you are damn near down the street from him doing iPad installs using most of his methods like the iStreamer and stuff lol. I liked watching you over at Soundman better but obviously you got a better opportunity.
The JBL MS-8 will be a similar match to the Bit One.

sure there is. I guess when u buy it there is google maps only whitch is good but will not work offline. U can share internet true smartphone or download gps app's that will work with offline maps predownloaded. I don't own nexus7 but all these things are similar.
I always thought the ipad as a dash is to big. This is great tho!

On Amazon they sell a mount for like 17 bucks that slides into your CD player, then you mount the iPad mini on it. You can't see the mount behind it because it's in the cd player. Very sturdy. And looks like it's actually installed in the car.

Cell phones now have Mobile Hot Spot functionality. If you have mobile hot spot, you won't need an iPad or Android tablet with 3/4G
It's great to have apps and safari and all that, but you won't have Internet when you're out on the highway. I guess you could have the 3G version but if you've got the wifi version only, most of your apps will be useless while driving.

I use my android to travel all around europe. Gps in these things are 10x better than any tom tom ^_^

just wondering, since you filled in the tray on top of the dash where the 2 screws were, are you just relying on the snap ins to hold the dash in place, as well as the screw under the outlet?

excellent work. I want to install an ipad mini +4g in my car but the monitor opening s 7inches exactly. I don't know if enlarging it will ruin the structure. I would like the install to be a slide out & work in conjunction w/ my current jvc pdr80 stereo. (though i'm willing to change for better/ easier bluetooth functionality) i just would like to have my mini function w/ the volume control, as being able to watch video, listen to radio, and navigation. What cables/adapter do i need? PLSLMK
So when you start the dash piece do you just cut and add on to the factory dash or can you buy a dash kit that just has a big hole in it so you can fabricate it to fit whatever?
So when are car manufactures going to get the clue and just install ipad's or ipad mini's in the dash from the factory. I mean seeing that apple probably won't change the connector for another 10 years and the design really isnt going to change that much it would be stupid easy to put a new one in when you need to update to the new ipad mini.

I have an 09 Ram. Im interested in doing this. I have the top of the line nav/dvd unit. thanks so much. I am oing to try this, though i cant remove the jvc stereo i have cause its in the center of my console. the ipad will mount towards the top center. Just order a 3.5 to 3.5 jack to try this suggestion. Do you think that 12volt istreamer will give me a better option and play my music, etc clearer/better? If it doesn't work, i guess i'll try to get a bluetooth jvc stereo, lol.
