Burial while alive has probably occured a lot throughout history. The term "saved by the bell" came from rigging a bell on the surface of a grave attached to a string around the "deceased" person's finger so they communicate if they awoke to find themselves interred. Can't imagine what that must have felt like.
Not always the rich. The lower classes would set up plaited hemp to a small bell, through the earth or a pipe, to the coffin. It would rot away after several weeks,, well long enough to do the job. Family members taking turns in sitting. The rich would often have fancy bell's and employ bell watchers to sit by the grave for several day's. Also to stop folk from stealing the chain apparently.
Her story is quite familiar as it happened a lot back in those days. One man who had Tuberculosis told his family to tie a string to his finger and a bell at the open of the grave in case he wasn't really dead and woke up after being buried alive, e could pull the string and the bell would ring alerting the caretaker and they could dig him up before he really died. After his death from the disease, his family carried out his wishes even though the bell never rang it got other families thinking that maybe they should do this in case their loved ones were mistaken as dead and buried alive. This tradition went on for decades until modern medicine found a means to know 100% if a person had actually died. In some areas and graveyards, you can still walk around and see bells hanging over a grave. It's erie but at least these families loved tier family members enough to at least be 100% sure.
There was actually a case where a man woke up in a body bag after paramedics tried to revive him and failed. They put him in a body bag and one of the medics was told to sit in back with the body on the way to the hospital. Anyway he said he heard a loud voice saying this ones not dead. After the third time he heard it he unzipped the bag and started feeling for a pulse. He couldn't feel one until he checked the big vein in his groin beside his femur bone. Anyway the medic felt a slight pulse and was able to revive him. It would be hell waking up in a grave or a body bag but I guess he was luckey. Sorry for writing a book.Cheers.
@@sandyworkman3025 you s read newes from the dead it's the story of Anne Greenewho was hanged for a murder she didn't do and she was hurried alive. What's very scary is this still happens 😳
Of all of your videos, which there are many that I consider my top ten, THIS harrowing story of Rosa and her life being cut short at a young 38 and her insistence of having being buried alive and coming back to tell those who needed to know is my official number one video!!!!! I do hope that the bill carried the names of Dr. Stopoloni and Mrs. Rosa Mancelli Spandoni in their honour!!!! What a beautiful gift that Rosa, as well as the medium, gave to those in the living world the courage to understand and that Rosa may now RIP. RIP Rose Mancelli Spandoni
My grandma always told us about this happening alot. They used to attach a bell on the top of the grave, attached to a cord inside the coffin. An attendant would watch the grave for days. Why didn't they use a whistle? Grave robbers dug up alot of bodies. One man was dug up, to steal his ring. His finger was cut off, blood started circulating. He was alive.
Edgar Allen Poe and other writers often talked about a disease that caused a temporary paralysis was causing quite a few people to be buried yet they were alive.
Poor rosa bút thanks to her millions of lives could be saved. I think in many ways its a secret fear many people would have cần you imagine what it would be like being alive in a coffin for two days and to feel your oxygen running out and theres absolutely nothing you can do ? Thats ấn utterly horrendous death thể worst there could ever be ... Máy you at least now rest in Peace Rosa ....once again thank you for the Story weird worlđ...
This was more common than you might think. In Europe in my great-grandparents or earlier time likely 1800s, there was a case like this, a young woman buried then found sitting up in the crypt (musoleum). She had chewed her fingers to the bone. Buried alive. It still haunts me to think about this tragedy. It was happening during Victorian times I saw on tv a doco where they showed graves with the face visible in case this happened.
I have that fear myself of still being alive when ive been pronounced dead , im to be cremated and i want thoroughly checked before im in the firey furnace. God forbid that happening. .... Id come back and haunt the one that didn't do their job properly 👻👻
Mrs H .... This has happened so often in the past where people have been in a coma and not deceased .... It's unimaginable what they suffered when they awoke ...Human scientists and the understanding of life & death has improved massively since then BUT that doesn't take away what these people suffered..May they RIP ..Because back then coma's weren't understood.. It's not human error it's simply a tragedy.Sad, Heartbreaking & also Devastating but today Scientists and Doctors know more....💔😥
I decided to be cremated as I'm very claustrophobic and dreaded being buried alive. I think a lot of people in tbe old days who were comatose and not actually dead were buried alive. This even happens today when people are pronounced dead and then wake up in the morgue.I would suggest that people specify in their will that signs of decay must be present before they're buried
Which is worse - being buried alive ( waking up in a sealed casket in the ground ) or being burned alive in a crematorium furnace if you happen to awake during a cremation. This is NOT really a question because no one would choose these scary scenarios.
You wouldn't last long in the cremation chamber, if you weren't dead, you would be with a minute. There's a blast flame that focuses on the chest because that's where most fat is located
At least now the embalming process would absolutely guarantee you were deceased and the common autopsy would be a shoe in guarantee also. Now as for cremation I doubt they embalm first and if there wasn’t an autopsy I suppose there is a very very minute chance you could still be alive.
Luckily these day's it's hard to survive the autopsy or having your stomach etc sucked out. Then the embalming fluid then having all your bit's sewn up before burial.
@@annied1827 Oh definitely. A lot of very hot place's with a poor community, are going to get them in the ground asap. Also with nearly all widespread disease it's going to happen. -Not much point doing an autopsy when the person is dead from a plague in front of you.

Every now and again one hears of someone at the morgue suddenly “come to live” so it is still happening. Very scary thought.

@Anne B., I had read about that and it was standard practice for decades and possibly centuries.
Yes. At least it gave the families a peace of mind and security.

My uncle, a pathologist, was surprisingly often requested, via the “deceased‘s“ will, to cut the wrists of corpses

Everyone's nightmare.
in poor parts of the world, "accidents" will still bury people alive
One would think that the lack of rigor mortis would be evident after a day or two.
This happened frequently during the American Civil War. Terrifying.
