I did this process on my SD40 and 200 hrs later it’s still good but I tell you... I wish I had this awesome video as a reference back when I did it!, Excellent job Captain. Yanmar should be ashamed to say this is regular maintenance. Thx for posting this great work, it’s now bookmarked for when it starts slipping again!!

Brilliant video, clear and precise instruction. Just changed out our clutch following this and all gone smoothly. Many thanks for taking the time to record. Much appreciated.

Great deal! My clutch started slipping just in the middle of my sailing holidays (I had 1.300hrs at that time) and thanks to your very detailed video I've been able to fix it in just one day! Well done.

Great video, my cone clutch started slipping with 300 hours, for almost a year I was never able to get a mechanic to remove it, many did not know about this procedure and wanted to move the engine. Not sure after reading many instructions on the internet, the video convinced me to do it myself. I took it out in about one hour, you need a 13mm wrench. I would add to pay attention to mounting direction of shifter; the wider part should point to the back. I read that if not gear will not engage. Thanks once again.

Ottimo video. Seguite passo passo e funziona.
Attenzione dopo aver messo in moto il motore e fatto girare il Saildrive, verificate serraggio bulloni. Se mettendo marcia fischia vuol dire che i bulloni di accoppiamento con il motore non sono stati serrati perfettamente. Fate varie prove e verificate serraggio.
    Per il resto perfetto.

Great video. i apreciaqte some of the tips and comments. I have a question; If i change the thrust washer without lapping the clutch, will that fix the problem?? It is a lot simpler fix that way!!

Please can you change the settings so we can download it. Many times we need to make a repair and do not have internet. I like to save these for future reference. Thanks

Big thanks for doing this. I'll be doing this procedure but Im gonna wash the parts after lapping them. I find it hard to believe that the mechanic dude wiped all the lapping compound off. Also it looks like he didnt lap 5 times in both directions on the top part. Just some observations. But kudos to all involved for your time.
Any chance of getting the size of the socket in the vice?

I agree that washing the parts is a good idea. We did actually go back off camera and wash all parts thoroughly and reassemble. I would caution that it is imperative to make sure and dry all components completely before reassembly.

What did you hammer on the top nut? DovI need to break something or just move it out from a groove?

even with the other guy trying to direct the mechanic to wash the parts, he was too smart to listen, not once did he clean out the cut groves in the cone, that is where a lot of lapping compound was retained, it is this kind of mistake that costs a lot more a few hours down the road when the lapping compound gets into bearings and gears, charles atlanta tx

Actually all of the parts were thoroughly cleaned and all of the lapping compound was removed. Did this repair a year and half ago and have since put hundreds of hours on the SD 50 and no more slipping. Expect to probably have to repeat the process sometime in the near future but for now she is holding up very well.

Who makes the SD 50 shims/washer modification kit to negate having to do this every 250-500 hours?

Gideon at saildrive@yahoo.com has a great upgrade kit for $450. Three great upgrades to improve reliability on these units. Cone pressure, shifter adjustment, and oil breather upgrades. UA-cam video at ua-cam.com/video/ov1c6E3lcAM/v-deo.html.
