I didn't have to watch for 2 seconds to know the answer to that thumbnail question: COMPRESSION. Back then you could get 100 octane gasoline at Sunoco, just dial it in at the pump. With 100 octane you could safely run 13.5 to one compression as long as you jetted the carburetor a little rich.

I had a 426 max wedge in the late 80s, and I had to drive to a drag strip to get fuel It could use.

The old engines were nice but can't match the power of the new ones

The Oldsmobile Rocket V-8 came out in 1949, the v-8 Old's introduced in 1916 was a 40 hp side-valve that was not called a "rocket".

Large displacement, high compression, large carburetors, and long duration high lift camshafts.

Oh my gosh what Oldsmobile had planned after the 455 but then the emissions crap started and they had to shelve it.

The 1964 GTO kicked off the Muscle Car era. The Mustang and Barracuda were not initially Muscle Cars. The Buick Nailhead was a 264, 322, 364, 401, and 425 versions. The 215 aluminum engine was not a nailhead. The Chrysler HEMI lasted through 1958 in it's first version.

Well, you got a few details wrong for sure but there's is nothing like the kick in the ass from Holly 850 double pumper on a great manifold. Fuel injection is nice but......
