First twelve Caesars of Roman Empire reconstructed in color. It is a part of "Romans in color" project, made by "History in 3D" creative team. #Rome #RomanEmperors #RomansInColor
Vespasian is one of my favorite emperors. According to Seutonius he had a clever sense of humor & was very down to earth. (Though this may have been his public persona he put on to appear more likable, who knows.)
I think he was genuinely down to earth, he laughed in a dudes face when the dude tried to link his ancestry to Hercules you know to better his claim to Emperor.
@@Hugh_Morris Nobody adored that type of person in any roman empire time. And the roman empire was a monarchy again since 27 BC, Vespasian was in the 1st century A.D.
There are several faces of Caligula, the Romans were of Mediterranean ethnicity, here a color reconstruction of Caligula, based on the traces of color found in the statue: www.vmfa.museum/statewide/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2013/08/Caligula-in-color.jpg
Great video. I had pictured Titus as being more handsome. Because Romans liked veristic sculpture, this probably is a pretty accurate representation of how they appeared. Thank you.
I think it would be great if a large scale "Facial Recognition" software was used to find modern live faces that matched closely the statues in living form and by applying historic hair and costume recreate the living forms of Ancient Faces.
This is why I love Roman sculptures. They didn't try to, in modern terms, _photoshop_ anyone. They pretty much made them accurate. Not like portraits from other royalty{s} that tried to make them look godly 😂
Debatable. Yes they were trying to make accurate portraits of them self but using Augustus as an example, he tried to make himself look like a God. Youthful, no faults, almost perfect. After all, the reign of the emperors up until Marcus Aurelius had tried to make their reigns and rule appear divine.
Not really, roman portraiture made people more beautiful. They could also make realistic portraits (like the Tusculum portrait of caesar, different from that in the video where caesar is more beautiful), but such realistic portraits were not suitable for religious and public purposes, they were exposed in people's homes instead.
In the tusculum portrait you can see a different nose shape, a wider forehead, somewhat of a smile, wrinkles on the neck, but most importantly caesar was very bald in the tusculum portrait, not so much in the portrait shown in the video
CaES AU TI CA CLAU NE GAL O VI VES TI DO... It was the way I memorized their names in sequence when I was in high school and never forget it anymore :)
@@gaspardgrande371 That in itself doesn't mean much. The most probable origin of the cognomen Caesar is a word meaning a good head of hair, but Julius Caesar was notoriously bald (although he concealed that as best he could with a comb-over).
Otho looks like Brent Spiner (Data on Star Trek Next Generation) 😅 Seriously, this is wonderful. Thank you for making this. To see them as actual people is profound & amazing!
Well with that color giving some real life image, I think I saw them all here and there during my professional years when they were sitting in office playing little king. Great work btw!
My favorite has to be Julius Caesar. One of the greatest military commanders in history. He brought the Roman Republic to an end which gave rise to the Roman Empire. He defeated the King of Arverni, Vercingetorix during the Gallic Wars. Lets not forget the Julian calendar.
Looks somewhat more realisitic and nice than the actual coloring of the sculpture that they have done in modern times. This is more in line with the fayum portraits.
"It is bullshit the size of a planet to compare portraits of Romanized Egyptians to the real Romans of Italy! And this fool also gave brown hair and eyes to people famous for having red and blond hair and blue eyes, ignorant goats!" I translate a written response to your comment that I agree with. You and the author of this color reconstruction are just ignorant goats.
The painted Caligula looks uncannily like actor Jack Gleeson. Who plays Joffrey in "Game of Thrones". Even the characters are the same (evil) selves. They should make a Caligula movie with Gleeson as Gaius.
Nice work but I would like to make two observations: from the classical texts we know that Octavian Augustus was blond with blue eyes and Nero had a red beard, according to the name "Ahenobarbus" of his gens, literally "with a red beard".
He inherited the name from his ancestor Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, who was born 200-years before he was. All accounts that mention his appearance describe his hair as blonde, with a flushed complexion.
@@sky4900 There is indeed such evidence, but none that I know of outside contemporary misrepresentation depicts Nero with red hair. Seutonius, though questionable, provides a detailed visual that no writer contredicted. Before that 19th century portrait, whose palette was presumably inspired by the naming misconception, he was never thought of has a red head. If mine doesn't than yours does not either, but in my case it is not inspired by a preference.

Beaucoup d'empereurs romains étaient d'origines "barbares". Je trouve votre restitution intéressante. Origines diverses, mais ils ont tous cet air de grandeur. C'est aussi ça le "Stoïcisme". Bravo !
The first Roman Emperor was Octavianus I (Augustus), not Caesar. Paradoxically he was killed because the senate did not want to give him the mandate of dictator for life which he wanted, for this would make him a king.
People have the misconception that all Italians look like the Italo-Americans from the Mafia movies who are even for Italian standard very swarthy. Overall the color reconstruction is pretty good.
@Rational PoC The sources are the ancient Roman historians and philosophers plus the residues of colored pigments left on the statues (yes, the Roman statues were originally colored). He was "Ahenobarbus" and his family was famous for the red hair of its members.
@@lilys.8617 Many of the Roman historians did not live during the times of the people they are talking about, Many people have an orange beard without having orange hair, and the statues were not painted with flat colours, instead they were painted realistically with shadows and highlights.
Gives them much more of a human touch, incredible work!
Vespasian is one of my favorite emperors. According to Seutonius he had a clever sense of humor & was very down to earth. (Though this may have been his public persona he put on to appear more likable, who knows.)
He even jokingly thanked his son for not deposing him while he was still not in rome. What a guy.
I think he was genuinely down to earth, he laughed in a dudes face when the dude tried to link his ancestry to Hercules you know to better his claim to Emperor.
@CipiRipi00 this is why I love Vespasian; just an old school Roman, a countryman, the kind of man they adored during the early Republic.
@@Hugh_Morris Nobody adored that type of person in any roman empire time. And the roman empire was a monarchy again since 27 BC, Vespasian was in the 1st century A.D.
How beautiful. Vespasian looks so sympathetic!
Замечательно! Взглянуть почти что в глаза императорам Рима, обладавшим почти божественным могуществом... Очень здорово, спасибо! :)
Wow, the color and clothes just make them feel more real, not just art. Thank you and looking forward to more!
With the colour portrait of Caligula you can really see the madness within.
Is it a coincidence that Caligula looks like Joffrey Lannister? :p
Yes! I see it too lol.
I thought the same thing

Oh ya, great idea. More unchecked criminal surveillance of the citizenry.
Another wonderful video! By the way, a small detail: Apparently Domitian had heterochromia, differently colored eyes.
Great vid - looking forward to more. The Flavians looked cool.
This bring to life technique is a more realistic version than the others that I've seen on U-tube. I give a thumbs-up to this!

Those mighty emperors really loved their bangs!
Ahaha..I like that, yeah they did and , mighty they were, amazing,
Most were losing their hair, it's called a caesar cut, that's why most were wearing laurels :)
The Late Roman Emperors even more!
I am reading Suetonius right now and this gives life to the work. Thanks!
Fantastic.
0:48 caligula was bald but is represented with hair because talking about his baldness was the death penalty
They had toupees back then as well.
Wasn't Caesar the bald one? I know he went to great lengths to hide it
Caligula looked terrifying. Well, he was.
Not so much... I see him a little bit childish
Excellent video. Just one observation: Nero was red-haired.
True, Nero had a red beard, according to the name "Ahenobarbus" of his gens, literally "with a red beard".
It goes with the same colour as the fire with which he destroyed Rome with.

The contemporaries of Vespasian said his expression looked like he was taking a shit. True!
Even after almost two-thousand years Caligula is best remembered as an evil degenerate who was in love with his sister Drusilla.

Amazing work. On a side note, I think the ancient Greek men would be much better looking (Alexander, Alcibiades in particular)
