Awesome to see you build a home for a wild betta as well! He looks great and they are definitely very shy, Slav took ages to get familiar with his surroundings and start to flare for the camera. I’m sure yours will settle and look incredible soon though!
Thanks buddy! Yeah they are definitely not as brave to start off with like the common Betta. I can already see this little guy getting braver by the day so hopefully he will become confident with time!
10 minutes I was screaming at the screen about that label! 😂 It's a nice little starter set for £50. I'd prefer a better filter, supplied with media, for a beginner. But it is what it is. You do this extremely well. I always use your beginner videos when helping beginners setup. No one explains it better in my opinion.
My imbellis is the most active betta that I've ever had! He's constantly swimming around, coming to the front of the tank when I arrive, and is so different from the other betta's I've had. It took him a day to warm up to me. I love him to death, and it made me appreciate the wild betta's more and I want more and more lol
I love your videos, Matt. Just saw you on the Betta Sorority video from a while ago and couldn't believe how your smile and eyes sparkled and shone. Such a nice fellow, I'm sure. Take care.
I don't boil my leaves I collect outside, I just throw them in as is...my Betta seems to love the tannins and my shrimp/snails love eating the leaves as they soften. Cheers mate!
I used to sometimes just chuck them in. My issue with 1000s of people watching I am always overly cautious. I don't want to do something and then cause someone an issue.
I'm really good at aquascaping smaller tanks, but rubbish at bigger ones. When I was new to the hobby (about three years ago) I made the mistake of purchasing white sand, which I ended up not liking. *it was so white* Instead of taking it out though, because it was very expensive, I decided to layer it with dark substrate, adding more overtime until it created layers and turned a horrible grey colour. It was sooooo thick and flat, so a couple of days ago I decided to start from scratch. I took all the sand out, and now I'll be taking my time and watching many videos so I get it right this time. Taking all that sand out was a complete nightmare for a 300 litre tank.Great video btw!
I love my three 5.5 gallon tanks. I have bettas in all of mine. I have my shrimp colony in with one of my bettas. He is a royal blue halfmoon betta, and I put blue dreams in with him. The shrimp have done so well I have populated 2 other tanks with shrimp from my original colony. That said my betta, Virgil, loves hunting the shrimplets, and I suspect he gets one once in a while. It isn’t enough to slow down the growth of the colony, and I have never seen him actually catch a shrimplet. He never messes with the adult shrimp. My tiny yanks are such a pleasure and so easy to keep. Thanks for sharing the pleasure found in keeping small tanks.
That's so so cool to hear! I think I'll plan to get some shrimp in with this little guy soon. But with the way he was flaring at the snail I'm not sure he's very social hahaha
@@FishShopMatt The wild beta have bigger mouths than the domesticated beta do. Makes sense though considering that the wild ones are bigger everywhere to. Hahaha. They may even be able to pick off some of the smaller adult shrimp as well. But I'm not an expert. I guess it all comes down to trial and error. 🤷♀️. I had a gorgeous full moon opal beta and the only thing that he'd eat was flake food. I tried blood worms and frozen brine shrimp, and a couple of others, but he wouldn't touch them. I guess those were yucky 🤮 to him. OR he was just being a prince 🤴. LOL
@ you never know with bettas. A wild type might think you are adding them as a treat. My bettas all have long fins, so they have a harder time getting to the shrimplets. They don’t mess with the adults at all.
Getting set up in 2 weeks, can't wait! Lil 8.5 gal with a small betta (female, under an inch still), and a pair of peacock gudgeon, and a nerite snail😊
Very beautiful little guy, hope he settles in well. As for what he does, seems like bullying that ramshorn snail is something he enjoys. 😄 From certain angles he looks a bit like a sunfish to me lol, I'd call him Mola.
Beautiful scape as always. I've been considering adding some sand to my gravel only tank for a while but didn't find much good said about it online. You brought up a great point. Will definitely try it out once I buy some sand.
Nice scape & look forward to seeing your imbellis all settled in the future. Wild betta are the best IMO- After having 5 domestic betta in a row dying far too young from tumours/cancer, I decided to give wilds a go. If you can find them, I'd recommend a group of Betta Coccina (yes a group!) I started with 6 in a 60p & they readily colony breed. I've since moved some of the offspring into 90p & 120p tanks. A very under rated, interesting, outgoing & stunning species, that quickly become my favs/ 'ride or die' species- if I could only have one tank, it'd be a 60p or 90p with a group of coccina. I also have wild imbellis, siamorientalis & splendens but ended up rehoming all but one of each species after about a year as found them very shy & much less engaging compared to the coccina. They are much healthier than their domestic counter parts & just as pretty IMO, so I do love them. Being in the UK you might be able to get your hands on a pair or small group of Betta Hendra (from the coccina complex)- they are dream species for me as we can't get them imported to my country. A truly gorgeous species.
Looks amazing! Been eyeing this tank or a superfish qubiq as as my daughters first. She’s after a half dozen of tetras or endler guppy’s and this could prove perfect. Brilliant video and tutorial
Another top video Matt. One comment. You mention when putting in the botanicals that the Betta will be able to hunt through the leaves etc. But there is nothing in the new tank for it to find. It is too clean. Adding shrimp will provide shrimplets for it to hunt down in time. But have you thought about deliberately introducing micro fauna from an established tank or pond to a new tank? Adding some ostracods would also be a good natural food source for the betta to hunt. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Totally agree I actually cut a whole segment out of this video because it was me chatting about micro fauna and shrimps for far too long. I want to make it into its own standalone video so watch out for that.
Lighter fluid cleans up residue easily, and is cheap. You can buy stuff marketed for cleaning glue junk, but it's essentially the same stuff for more money. Just squirt some on a tissue, rub it along the glass, and wipe with the dry part of the tissue. Stinks, and you'll want it well-ventilated so you don't get high, keep out of reach of children, but it's cheap and it works.
Cool :-). Still keep in mind not everywhere you are allowed to keep fish in such a small tank. Here in Austria (very strict, about the same in Germany) you need at least 54l to keep _any_ fish. Imo thats what you should show also.
I love the wilds, we have a seller here in Australia that I'm always going in to look at what they have. I keep torturing myself, lol, as I can't get one yet. No room for more tanks. 😂 Smaragdina, Macrastoma are other nice wild type betta if you can come across them. Honestly there are so many, the wilds are just awesome and some can be kept with females aswell. Not that you would want babies everywhere but if you were up for that sort of thing, you can.
Thank you! Yeah I totally agree, I sometimes didn't used to boil but with lots of people watching me I would rather be overly cautious and not cause people any issues.
People who have problems with food and waste on or in their gravel need to use their gravel vacuum. It takes all that stuff up. That's why they make them.
Always enjoy your videos. After watching, considering getting a Betta imbellis myself. I did wonder though, how will you provide nutrients to the plants?
Hi matt! I absolutely love your work! Simple and beautiful. I do have a question though, and really appreciate if you could answer it in future videos.. when setting up a tank you almost always add beneficial bacteria when there's no ammonia in the water, and then let the tank run for a week or so. How is it possible for the bacteria to colonize without ghost feeding it or adding fish to the tank? Thank you so much!
Cool idea with the gravel/sand substrate. Would that work on a larger scale if I stuck with mostly epiphytes? Don't suppose you could have corys in without more sand?
@FishShopMatt you are definitely where I get my inspiration from. From peeling the sticker to a second thought black stick on background 🫣🤣 Absolutely love it. I'm thinking of trying "mouth brooders" next ......
Hey there from America!!! I love you and your videos!!! I have 12 South American tanks, I want to try 6o gallon cubes with Angels. What’s the most beautiful, laidback! Freshwater Angels?? I know you are the man to help me, been watching you for years now at the shop
Stain the tissue with tea, coffee or your tannin water. Let it dry out and then use it to glue your wood to the stones. It hides the white tissue joints.
Hi Matt, enjoying the channel immensely, looking at setting up a couple of tanks and have seen the large racking system from Amazon on your link and I was wondering if this would be suitable weight wise for Superfish Scaper 90 tank ?
Hey Matt. Love - as always- your video :-) - Have you experienced Otoes reacting to guava leaves? My otoes don´t seem to like them, they seem stressed when i use them. No reaktion to any other leaves, only guava.
Wild bettas are definitely betta. That species is about as good as you can get, and when that betta was flaring at the snail (it hilarious that he thinks he can intimidate a snail by flaring) he was really showing the potential of his fin colours. I will never understand why humans keep thinking that they can improve on nature when nature's shapes and colours are so wonderful to begin with. Once again, you've done a fantastic job of scaping. If you can do a great job like that in an tiny little aquarium, maybe you should consider scaping a swimming pool. I wonder what one could do with a space like that? Charge for the luxury of swimming with the fish in it? Buying a property with a swimming pool would probably be prohibitive though. You'd need to be ugly rich, and that comes with its own set of horrible problems. Cracking good job though. I always look forward to your videos for precisely that reason!
Thank you so much! Yeah I think this little Betta is going to grow into a stunner. A scaped swimming pool would be interesting, the thing is I'll never be ugly rich I like spending money on fish too much! Hahaha
@@FishShopMatt Maybe it's because I share the same weakness, but I can think of much worse things to spend money on than fish. Also, show me a person who doesn't like to spend money, an I'll show you someone who is already in the grave. How much you spend seems related only to the income a person has. If you have the income of Elon Musk, you spend it on rockets which blow up when they aren't supposed to. We have more modest incomes so we must choose a less expensive way to spend any extra money we might have. Thing is, it doesn't take a lot of wealth to make these watery dream worlds and to stock it with appropriate aquatic denizens. I am currently working on my most complex and difficult build right now, and it has taken more than a three months to afford what is going into it, but that's not a problem because I wouldn't be able to build it all at once. Additionally, I have my other aquariums to maintain, so I'm never bored. When I'm done with all that, I am able to spend time watching my favourite aquarists ply the art on UA-cam. I learn a quite a bit from all of you, and it is never time wasted. I'm glad that all of you are sharing. It gives me ideas and emboldens me to try them out. I owe you a debt of thanks for all you've taught me, and many others around the world. Did you ever think that you'd have an effect on the entire world? How do you feel about that? You've brought something positive to people everywhere. That's quite an accomplishment. It's something that even Kings and and leaders of powerful nations don't often accomplish. Think about it a bit, but don't let it go to your head. A simple family man reaches out to the world and gives them pleasure by sharing his interest, and his knowledge of it. I hope you are able to keep reaching out and touching people around the world, and that you have every success in this endeavour.
i am planning to do two betta tanks..one is for your normal betta and another is for wild betta. not sure which wild betta but i have few in mind namely; betta livida, brownorum or sp jade..betta macrostoma is nice too but they grow quite big. i could go for parosphromenus sp but they require very low pH and they require live feeding which is out of option for me
Hi Matt, if you need a video idea, could you please consider one about getting rid of stubborn hair algae. I have a two year old tank that has recently decided to have a hair algae outbreak that I’m really struggling with. Water parameters are stable, lighting is quite good( I’ve tried reducing to 7 hrs/day. ) it has some guppies, cherry shrimps, & snail. I’m doing small water changes every other day, I’m pulling out as much as I can every day. It’s under stocked and is planted with stem plants & epiphytes. I thought maybe there was a dead fish somewhere that has thrown it off balance but water tests are all ok. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would appreciate your advice. Please & thank you 🫶🇦🇺
I will certainly add it to the list and try and get one made. I currently have a tank that has a small issue and if I take my eyes off it for a week or two it starts to grow. Maybe I'll let that tank go under a controlled manner and then try and defeat the algae in real time in a video. One thing to look at with hair algae is if it's growing in pockets where debris can sit. Or if it is growing over the whole tank as this can then be an indicator as to if it's a localized issue of fish poop sitting in gaps or if it's something in the water.
Gosh this tank turned out beautiful, it's a total show piece! 🥹 I also want to add that sand just plain looks more elegant; gravel is so beginner but sand is lovely. Additionally as a saltwater aquarist I always it so contrasting when freshwater folks fuss about sharp edges in the aquascape because reef rock is 100% sharp edges! It makes sense that freshwater environs would be smoother though, what with river currents happening and whatnot. I'm very grateful for the tip about testing rock with vinegar, since as a salt aquarist I *want* my rocks full of calcium!😂 But damn I wish Interpet was available in Canada, this tank is exactly what I want for the little freshwater betta tank that I want to build as a support tank for my reef aquarium. The plan is to grow that surface plant which everyone hates on the surface (with a floating barrier to let light down) as food for my future tang, and ramshorns snails as food for a future toby pufferfish in it. I've got my heart set on a nice koi plakat betta and possibly some peaceful corydoras or kuhli loaches as tankmates.❤ Anyway, splendid work, you did an amazing job on this!❤❤ Also want to say for folks living in North America - Forest Service Roads are great places to find free scaping materials like rocks but make sure you go up them on weekends when there are less scary logging trucks at large, and maybe carry a two way radio to warn the loggers that you're around.
This was just wicked cool. I have a really odd question. I recently found our old Britta water filter. I can not find filters for it. Can aquarium filters work?? Are there any harmful things in a fish filter??
Thank you! So I have a similar thing and broke one open once out of curiosity. Most of the time it's a fine fleece filter that then has carbon and ion exchange resins all mixed up. There in theory isn't anything bad in aquarium filtration components if you matched them up. You could find all the same bits just designed for aquarium filtration. If it was me I probably wouldn't risk it as there is probably some level of quality control where it's designed for human grade consumption or use in aquarium filtration.
Hi Matt, love the nano cubes setups!! can you help with any advice on my Java fern? For some reason the leaves are turning black? The water seems fine and fish are ok, just the fern is starting to bad? The tank is about 4months old and I dose fertiliser once week??
I don't know really, I've been so busy with the garage build every spare minute I have has been spent out there. We will see what the future holds but currently I'm just focused on some projects that you all know about and some you don't 😉
It would certainly be tricky long term as a lot of the Coldwater fish do eventually get chunky. But I think maybe some celestial pearl danios or a cool water shrimp tank would do well in here long term.

That's very interesting, I can't say I have but it's possible they could have funny reactions to things like that
Nice
Thank you!
Awesome!
Thanks!
i am planning to do two betta tanks..one is for your normal betta and another is for wild betta. not sure which wild betta but i have few in mind namely; betta livida, brownorum or sp jade..betta macrostoma is nice too but they grow quite big. i could go for parosphromenus sp but they require very low pH and they require live feeding which is out of option for me
Hi Matt, if you need a video idea, could you please consider one about getting rid of stubborn hair algae.
@ hi Matt, thanks for replying. It seems to be everywhere. I look forward to the video, thanks in advance 🫶
I'm very grateful for the tip about testing rock with vinegar, since as a salt aquarist I *want* my rocks full of calcium!😂
But damn I wish Interpet was available in Canada, this tank is exactly what I want for the little freshwater betta tank that I want to build as a support tank for my reef aquarium. The plan is to grow that surface plant which everyone hates on the surface (with a floating barrier to let light down) as food for my future tang, and ramshorns snails as food for a future toby pufferfish in it. I've got my heart set on a nice koi plakat betta and possibly some peaceful corydoras or kuhli loaches as tankmates.❤
Anyway, splendid work, you did an amazing job on this!❤❤
Also want to say for folks living in North America - Forest Service Roads are great places to find free scaping materials like rocks but make sure you go up them on weekends when there are less scary logging trucks at large, and maybe carry a two way radio to warn the loggers that you're around.
13:21 What glue did you use? 😮 - Ramón
Are the alder trees the same as what we have here in Vancouver Island.
@@FishShopMatt Thank you ever so much mate!
" I need more hands for this" that's what she said..😊
Hahaha 🤣
Hi Matt, love the nano cubes setups!! can you help with any advice on my Java fern? For some reason the leaves are turning black? The water seems fine and fish are ok, just the fern is starting to bad? The tank is about 4months old and I dose fertiliser once week??
Why are you not doing videos with MD please can you reply it you both look awesome together
Really liked the scape, but the buttom glass not being perfectly flat on a surface makes me a bit nervous. This might give some limitations 🙈
I’m sure that the makers of the aquarium have thought about that.
It's hard to see but the plastic base has a frame work in it that supports the tank all the way round so hasn't ever been an issue that I know of.
@@FishShopMatt understood 👍🏼 thanks Matt I admire your work. Greetings from Honduras ✌🏽
When are you going to be back n shop and be with MD...
I don't know really, I've been so busy with the garage build every spare minute I have has been spent out there. We will see what the future holds but currently I'm just focused on some projects that you all know about and some you don't 😉
What’s the best way to transfer fish while moving?
How long do you boil those leaves etc for.
LMAO 🤣
I thought you left the sticker on to advertise the product 🤦🤣😂
Hahaha I was just too busy in the zone of chatting and scaping to realize.
I'd there anything cold water or temperate that you could actually put in one of those?
It would certainly be tricky long term as a lot of the Coldwater fish do eventually get chunky.
But I think maybe some celestial pearl danios or a cool water shrimp tank would do well in here long term.
