      Mild Spoilers-
In Hindsight I’d say twisters did a Fire tornado pretty well, it pretty much only catches fire as it hits and passes across the oil rig as if it’s just the fireballs shooting up, it even mimics the semi disappearing look, but then it’s back to just a big normal tornado again. And only the Cowboy guy has the cool tornado Truck. And they note the underpass is a terrible but their only choice

In Twisters the main character who actually survives the tornado at the start says that the overpass would be a bad choice but the rest said they had no where to go. You could argue that they could go to the ditch but i don’t really know.
Edit: I forgot to add, the things in the containers were a super boosted version of the stuff that sucks moisture that you see in diapers. The process was like they first launch a firework with like something in it that’ll turn it into rain or something and then they release the combination at the right time. Idk if this would’ve worked in real life but maybe it could.

Just saw the movie earlier today - was putting off watching your vid until then! Here's some assorted thoughts:
I think I could give a pass to the "movie magic" on the part of how 90% of storm chasing is just driving and potentially no tornadoes. When you have roughly 2 hours to tell a whole story and show cool stuff, these parts are easier to cut out for the sake of pacing. That said, I think the "long drive/busted storms" situations could be great places for showing some character interactions, exposition etc.
To be honest, when I saw the scenes where some of the characters wound up caught in the tornado accidentally, I immediately thought about your story. Having the real life story of such an event in my mind made those scenes bone-chilling in a whole other way. Like "this isn't just fictional entertainment, there's someone who's actually been through that just a couple months ago and talked about it!"
A spoiler-free video on this topic was great, but I'd also love to see a part 2 where you could delve a bit into the movie as a whole - the "disrupting tornado" method was something I was left wondering about. Not so much in "is this possible" way, but more: how much of this reasoning is correct, what is made up or exaggerated, how does the logic of it hold up in relation to real meteorology.
The overpass (or is it underpass?) part really caught my attention. Mild spoilers for the first minutes of the movie, but I was glad to see it is actually called out by a character, that hiding under an overpass is a bad idea; and when there is no other choice left, the movie kinda shows why. I'm lowkey hoping this will help erase this harmful 'survival tip' from the public awareness at least a little bit.
Woops this got a bit long, but I wanted to yell some of my thoughts after leaving the theater lol Thank you for this video, it was great!!

The power station tornado happened around the Nashville area. Tornado hit a substation and damaged an oil filled transformer, that cloud of oil was then ignited by an electrical spark because its a substation getting torn apart of course there will be electrical stuff sparking. I remember watching that live on the news and wondering what that thing hit to cause that giant fireball, wasn't surprised it was a substation. Pretty visible tornado too given the area, normally they're rain wrapped blobs that strike in total darkness but this one was fairly visible and happened when we still had some daylight. It spawned, chose violence, and wanted us all to see it.

You should see Twisters! While a lot of what you said about the trailer is warranted, especially the fire tornado. I felt they did a good job with the science overall (for a Hollywood movie at least).
Example: overpass was used as last resort but the main character mentions it was not safe. They also mention how EF scale is determined by damage which the original twister used freely and incorrectly. Overall best tornado movie since on twister!

    • @Vahlee-A
      @Vahlee-A Місяць тому

I'm glad the more serious movies about tornadoes actually acknowledge the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The B-movie types and The Flash Season One incorrectly use the outdated scale. No shade to Twister 1996 since the old scale was still in use back then.
My issue is more when the movies (and people in general) try to rate tornadoes by size and wind speed instead of the intended metric of damage intensity. It's even worse when they try to give very strong tornadoes F6/EF6 ratings.
In Twister, the first tornado was supposedly an F5, but we never saw its aftermath. Jo probably saw it, so it's probably fine. In Into The Storm, the helicopter pilot says the final tornado has a wind speed of 300 miles per hour and then immediately gives it an EF5 rating, which he shouldn't have done until way later. And in Twisters, Kate and her friends estimate the first tornado as an EF5 as well despite none of them seeing any damage, only a sudden increase in size and wind speed. We do see a little later that tornado probably really was an EF5 tornado due to the massive ground scouring, but Kate wouldn't know that before getting hit.

And the movie shows one by one of them is taken away by the tornado while trying to take shelter under the overpass. Kate is the only survivor, but badly injured.

It was also completely debunked by the 1999 Moore F5 tornado when the tornado hit three overpasses and killed one person at each.

    Hello High Risk Chris.
It's good to know that you are going to watch Twisters, I watched it twice in theater, at IMAX and 4DX. Honestly, it was an outstanding experience.
Also you mentioned the barrels at 7:44, you believe, are bombs. A little spoiler alert, trust me, they are not bombs.
I hope you would post another video about what you think about Twisters after you watch it in theater.

After recently watching the twister movie, I can say that the weirdest parts about the tornado was that they moved around a lot quicker, and the funnel itself felt very jittery which ultimately made the tornado feel a lot less powerful since it would go zooming one second, but then just stop in place the next, and it just felt like it didn’t really have much weight behind it.

I watched the movie before watching this. A few things weren't quite right in this video about how the movie played out. SPOILERS AHEAD.
When they attempted to stop the tornado they weren't exploding it. What they did is make a way to absorb the moisture in the tornado in hopes of killing it. In the movie it works. Not sure about real life though.
Another thing is when they take cover in an underpass. The main protagonist specifically mentions that it is a horrible idea but it is their only option. EXTRA SPOILER WARNING.
Them taking cover in the overpass goes horribly and everyone that does it dies, except for the main character who barely survives.
As for the firenado, it lasts like 5 seconds before the tornado keeps going. And with the, going inside of the tornado thing. They do that a few times and you are right. It is kinda far fetched how they do it. Would love to hear what you think with this stuff in mind. Hopefully you get a chance to reply

There's a scene from an old VHS called "Twister: Fury on the Plain" (and lots of other videos) of the news team chased beneath the underpass where they a couple of families were taking shelter. Other than being windblown and scared to death, they all survived without serious injury. After that people started thinking that this was a safe shelter and they've been trying to teach them otherwise. I think that video is still here on YT.

Be taking shelter underneath an overpass thing I think is derived from an event from I believe it was the 90s where a storm chaser team were filming a tornado which ended up changing its direction and heading towards them. The first thing they did was, they went into an underpass and basically held on for dear lives to the concrete pillars and they survived. I think this is where the proliferation of sheltering underneath a overpass comes from. Even though in all likelihood, this was a one in 1 million kind of survival event.
Again movies seem to love these things.
Not only that, but there’s a thing from the early years of cinema where it didn’t really matter how realistic it was as long as it looked good. Movies are getting better at this, but they still fall into the thing like this all the time.

there are calm eyes in tornados, it's just they are extremely rare. in most cases, the tornado's condensation funnel in just a few yards wide, even in ef5s that are over a mile wide (Like shown in Twister). However, there was apparently a family, i believe it was during the Greensburg tornado, that, after their house was blown away, they were left in the eye and with no choice, took shelter in an exposed storm drain tube. The family survived, but that means that tornado was truly gigantic.

  • @ghostsuru8429

It didn't get talked about in the video (or comments from the looks of it), but the reason why the Wizard of Oz tornado looks so realistic, and why it got a HUGE mention in both the Twister movies, is because the guy that was doing the practical effects for the Wizard of Oz had actually seen and experienced a tornado once in his life. And the experience left such a huge impression on him that he said he wanted to do that scene right.
I'm still impressed he got a pair of nylon tights to look so convincingly like a tornado. He was a true master of practical effects.

I think I’ve see a single cyclonic event occur before, in real life. I do not think it was a tornado as, the cloud didn’t seem to have any rotation, though it did turn into one afterwards. I was at a beach with my dad and brother. We saw some clouds rolling in. They looked bad. My dad went “those clouds look bad”. I said, “yeah”. My brother said, “yeah”. We didn’t do anything else. 5 minutes pass “those clouds are headed directly at as us.” “Yeah.” “Also yeah”. I don’t fully know what happened but, at some point, the storm went from far away, to here in a matter of like 15 seconds. It almost looked like an explosion. What I realized happened was, the freakishly cold front of a storm was moving towards the shore during an exceptionally hot day, on a slight angle. I think a pressure and temperature difference caused an absurd amount of condensation to occurs, instantly. Or something. It went from 35°C to 15 in less than a minute. We were like 10 feet from the exact centre of this thingy. The water drastically heated up, the closer you got to shore. I feel like physics happens when this happens. All we saw were a couple twirly things, one of which knocked a paddle boarder off his board….He was pretty stoked about it. It then whipped right by us and blew up a fence before vanishing. Now, apparently this storm ended up producing a proper tornado, a little further along. I thiiink I just happened to be in the exact location where it changed from a bad storm to a supercell and, the tornado(ish) things that I saw were dust devil things that sorta reflected what was happening to the entire storm. However, i imagine that those would have happened anyways if a wind gust that strong and that cold hit from the same angle, even if it was perfectly sunny out. Either way, it was really, reallllly cool to experience but, we all left that beach feeling exceptionally stupid.
