NASAMS: Ukraine's new weapons system explained

  • Ukraine is set to receive a new weapons system in its conflict with Russia - the Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems or NASAMS.
Designed to provide medium to long-range air defence against aircraft, cruise missiles or drones, NASAMS can fire short-range AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles plus the medium-range AIM-120 - identical to the missiles used on fighter aircraft.
The weapons system is the same one used to defend the White House and Capitol Building in the US.

      Seriously.
Well, technically, American are behind in rocket science.
However, the U.S.A. is actually leading. Just because it hasn't deployed hypersonic rockets doesn't mean it doesn't have the technology.
Russia & China use it as propaganda. Don't let that fool you. Supersonic rockets/missiles have serious issues to be overcome. Going to have to break some laws if physics to fix it.

@Edka Poik we are ahead of Russia in missile defense. Thaad can intercept hypersonic icbm missiles at mach23. With a hypersonic warhead that goes mach 8 hypersonic. Sm6 block 6 hypersonic missiles are in service. Hypersonic Dark Eagle hypersonic missiles batterys are in service. X15 hypersonic aircraft developed in the 1960s were well ahead of anything Russia has today. X43a aircraft had the first scram jet hypersonic enjines. X37 hypersonic scram jets aircraft are claimed to be a hypersonic bomber. The Russians were only ahead in ground launch hypersonics. But not anymore.

@@sys3248 The Buk missiles Ukraine has are 1985 vintage. NASAMS missile is an evolved sea sparrow missile (RIM-162) with an AMRAAM seeker (called AMRAAM ER). Thus it has a much longer range, with the enhanced anti-air capabilities of AMRAAM. Not exactly mediocre, but certainly aimed at a different function. Certainly, the newer Buk systems Russia uses have excellent range and altitude capabilities and are great to shoot down civilian airliners. Much more mobile and able to follow advancing troops, however, the Ukrainians will be using their NETWORKED NASAMS to defend cities against cruise and ballistic missiles. This is what it is actually designed for, the missiles are significantly smaller than any of the Buk missiles. The ability to network with existing counter-battery radar means an advanced warning for low-flying cruise missile intercepts, which gives it a distinctly longer range and a greater probability of intercept. This would also mean Russia would have to better plan cruise missile courses to avoid this since the ability to launch a missile from 100 miles away against a target not on the launching system radar, with mid-course updates is a pretty useful feature. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a Buk can shoot what its radar sees, and not what another Buk system 100 miles away can see. This gives Ukraine a much more integrated battlespace picture with significantly more capabilities than their 45-year-old Buks. Certainly thinking it is an A2A missile shows you actually know nothing about the system, the missile it uses has actually never been carried on an aircraft. The rocket motor is different, the actual seeker is the part that comes from the most current version of the AMRAAM, with an extended range rocket motor designed for launching from ships.

We shoot down most of the Russian missiles as of now. As a Ukrainian, I am very grateful to all the counties that are contributing to our defense against these terrorist attacks from Russia.

There’s no way it can survive todays threats unless there’s been off the hood upgrades done which I doubt to somehow make it stand. The MIM’s time has come to and end, and the department hasn’t reached out newer mobile solutions since they are focused on HGV interception using Aegis Block II I guess.

These can easily intercept low flying targets , pretty much all SAM's can , the reason jets and such fly low when avoiding sams is to they have the ability to use terrain like trees , hills and such to block line of sight from incoming missiles , Cruise missiles do not have that ability and will just fly to the target which makes them susceptible to pretty much any air defense .

In short: cruise missiles can't constantly adjust altitude to avoid trees/buildings/hills etc - they fly at a constant altitude, let's say 500ft, which is still high enough to shoot down. They also don't fly as fast as people seem to think - maybe 450kts? Or less?

More lives will be saved and much of the weaponry can be returned. Any long range systems can be signed over as on hire to Ukraine and at this stage we call Russias bluff.
The only real serious consideration is an invasion of Taiwan. As long as we can counter that the maximum help should be given to Ukraine asap.

We think of the Russia-Ukraine war as a local conflict, but it is much more than that; it is a global war on multiple fronts. The war is not only a military conflict; it is also an economic war of attrition. With skyrocketing gas prices and shortage of staples, people all over the world are feeling the consequences of the war.
This war is transforming the entire modus operandi of humanity. Since the dawn of time, we have been accustomed to living by the motto, “survival of the fittest.” By and large, the rule was that the strong determined the rules, and the rules were often abusive toward the weak. Now, it seems like a new mindset has set in: Wanting something and being strong enough to take it does not mean that the world will accept it.
The war, therefore, is being fought on the inside no less, and perhaps more than on the outside. Our very makeup is changing from abusive to cooperative, from narcissistic to altruistic.
It hurts, and it will not happen without a struggle, but it is irreversible. This is the path of our evolution toward the purpose of our creation-to encompass within us all of creation. To do that, we must come to care for it, just as a mother encompasses her child through her maternal love.
The struggle to transition from our current uncaring and mean approach to all creations but ourselves, into wise and compassionate beings is called “the war of Gog and Magog” or Armageddon.
Since the war is about our inner makeup, we can fight it within us. If we object to struggling with ourselves over who will rule-the ego or love-the physical reality will force us to choose love nonetheless. However, it will do so by hurting us in a very physical way.
The war in Eastern Europe is nothing compared to what we might have to endure if we resist the process. The horrific descriptions of our sages and prophets hint at it, and we would not want to live through it.
Alternatively, we can fight this war within us without firing a single bullet. The choice is in our hands. All we need is to continue in the same direction that nature is already leading us: toward connection. If we make an effort to care for one another, even though initially we don’t, then we are moving in the right direction. If we try to resolve conflicts not with guns or even legal battles, but by strengthening the care and friendship between us, then we are saving lives and sparing torments from countless people.
In conclusion, let us try to rise above the hatred and see the human on the other side, who suffers too. Let us think that this war was given to us so we would think about each other more than we have so far. After all, were it not for this war, we would not notice one another. Now that it is here, we are no longer indifferent. Although our feelings our currently negative, now that we are aware of them, we can work on them together and turn them around. These are the wars of the Messiah who moshech [Hebrew: pulls] us out of the ego, and into mutual love.
