You can get potato grow bags where you have a flap on the side, gives a good indication of what is happening underneath. I harvested mine when the leaves flopped down.
Well the 2M potato video is how I found you 😊...I'm growing Rocket and Charlotte for my first ever potato in pots....planted 22 march and have pulled 2 containers so far..salad potato size 👌
Remember lifting potatoes when I was a kid. Honestly the excitement waiting to see which plant was going to reveal the biggest potato as you cleared away the soil. Happy days! Nice video thanks ❤
I planted ten Charlotte potatoes on 5th April and have just harvested them. I just made a small hole, planted them and only earthed them up with comfrey leaves, grass clippings and chop and drop method of weeding. I had a great crop of clean potatoes. Unfortunately, so excited I forgot to weigh them!
Your potato information always helps me & gives me confidence to plant spuds each year. That video that you did with the container potatoes was the reason l got into planting spuds! That is always my go to video l usually watch as a step by step refresher lesson each and every new season! Thanks Katrina! 🌱
That's how I started following your channel. I watched that potato video. I grow desiree this year and they look so beautiful above ground. They are in the middle of flowering. It is a maincrop potato so I have to be patient and wait with the harvest.
Hi its Paul watch all your videos going to have go next year at growing potatos when they are ready whats the best way to store them so they last been told brown sacks . Ps keep the good work love you videos
Great video Katrina. I'm just finishing my first three metre drill of Red Duke of York planted Paddy's day . Drill two planted three later and ready for harvest. Maincrop Sarpo Axona and Sarpo Miro still growing steadily, will dig them out around October.
Hiya Katrina will have a peek at your container video as it is my only choice?. My understanding is you can grow in all sorts of reusable bags etc. take care Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🐝
I'm growing the same as what I grew last year "Cara" which did amaaaazingly well last year even considering the blistering summer we had. I had some really huge ones, which was just what I wanted as I wanted them for Jackets and they were so delicious. I grew them in fabric containers last year, however this year we had an old water butt that had broken, so I'm actually growing them in that and a plastic bin haha. So will be interesting to see how they turn out in comparison. In the water butt, I staggered planting them, so I did a layer at the bottom, them covered in compost as they started to grow, then a bit further up put in another layer and continued that a few more times. I wonder how they will do, can't wait to find out.
Thinking I have a couple more weeks to go as I was a little later this year. You can’t beat the taste of home grown potatoes. Hope your new Medaka fish are doing ok, my first Medaka eggs hatched yesterday. 😊
Hi Katrina , a timely reminder about potatoes ! If mine are as good as those you have grown I will be happy! Ive got Pink fir apple in containers and Arran pilot a row in the ground . I'm going to have a peek at the Arran's soon .
Love your videos!! Only problem I live in Australia always find confusing the times to Plant converted to my subtropical other side of the world . Still all your tips are very helpful. Thank you 🙏❤️
I’m in the group that planted 3 different varieties but only knows the name of one. I tried container planting for only one variety, the rest are in the ground. We are blessed with very rich soil and the foliage on all are robust. Next season I’ll do better and I’ll also plant sweet potatoes. Cheers and thanks for the great info.
I have Yukon Golds, and Russets both growing in my Tiny Garden. All have bloomed, and most have fallen over, but we did have torrential rain and flooding a few weeks ago.
I always grow Charlotte as I like a salad potato, but they were not good last year, so I have grown jazzy this year, they are ok but am going to try Nicola next year. I have raised beds with soil & my own compost mixed in but every year all my potatoes have scab & the bed I put them in have never had potatoes, so I don’t know if it’s lack of rain or the soil, I keep reading different stories.
potato reveals never get old, cant wait to see how yours have got on. I have had a low yield good sizes not very many from my first earlies I planted mid march beginning of April. Waiting for the main crops now, Cara and Sarpo Miras amd some Red Duke of York First earlies I planted later and am leaving to grow into big spuds
I mound up with partially dried grass clippings. It's then very easy to check on their progress, without disturbing the plant or even getting your hands dirty
Do you ever have issues with blight? We've had lots of rain the last month or so in the north west. I've to cut most of mine back due to blight. Just wondering if you do anything to prevent blight of if you think pots help?
Not often but some years it happens. To prevent it you can grow blight resistant varieties and encourage good airflow around them as much as you can. There’s not much you can really do tbh!
Thank you for this video, it was really helpful I'm a first time gardener, I was just curious I put a potatoe in the soil the leaves are still green again thankyou so much
Thanks Katrina, im 500 miles north of you, so know i need to wait a bit longer, i think i got marris piper, but unsure, anyway they are in pots and in another month, ill tip one out .......and let you know...
your lucky to have a good climate and good soil for growing stuff. Here in Florida we have very poor soil and a sun that's way too hot. I'm thinking about moving.
Thanks Katrina, always one of the most satisfying things in gardening revealing the buried treasure of a potato harvest ! Congrats on the massive success of your container video !
My Charlottes must have been really early, because I pulled them up mid June and they were really big. I did put them in at the same time as the first earlies.
I've grown potatoes this year for the first time in containers and planted Swift and Orla back in early April. Swift I harvested about a month ago when the foliage started looking a bit sorry for itself but I wasn't particularly happy with the yield. Orla I left until the foliage was well and truly done and harvested them a couple of days ago. An improvement on the Swift but still a bit disappointing. I've planted some Charlottes for Christmas and fingers crossed they'll do a bit better. I don't think I shall grow first/second earlies again as when you add up the cost of the seed potatoes and the cost of the compost, for what I got, they worked out as very expensive potatoes! I've decided to try maincrop next year (in theory Valour) and hopefully the size of the potatoes will make it more worthwhile 🤞
Honestly, my potates were a mess this year. I grew them in too mulch leaf much and I don't think it held onto the nutrients very well. Hey ho, always next year. Informational as ever 🌱😊
Hi from ohio. Growing potatoes 1st time. I planted cut quaters with eyess in potting soil all i had at the time enhanced soil With coffee grounds 4ft tall and bloom everywhere!!! Hoping russet potatoes when foliage dies thanks for your info. Now if i can get my pineapple to grow
Here in IRAQ potato grow in two seasons,,first one start in September harvesting in December..we send half of them to market and other keep in store to next season that will begin in February ,, harvest in May.. here should keep some of the in cool place to next season.. thanks ❤
When i planted my seed potatoes, i took some of the eyes off and left the two upper most, so i thought i will try an experiment whereby i planted those "eyes" to see if they would grow, and some of them did, and suprise i actually got some potatoes from them the other day, unbelievable. just smaller than a tennis ball.
I just pulled the last of mine today. They are an all purple variety called Blackberry. I'm in the USA, in WI. I could have waited a couple more weeks but decided not to.
This is my 4th year of growing them in pots, and unfortunately will be the last. I tipped a pot out ( 1 of 4 Charlotte) last week and had a fantastic crop. But, like other years, they broke up in the pan after only a few minutes of boiling.. I've tried steaming as well, but the outer layer comes away, and the middle is still uncooked.
Never had that, once the Haulms (tops) are cut off, I leave them in the pots for a couple weeks so they harden up, especially the skins. I have harvested my first 30 litre container of Charlottes sown St Patrick’s day, had a yield of 3 and 3/4 qtr pound. Have 3 other pots with tops cut off stacked waiting to be harvested. The rest not ready yet.
Containers are the only way to grow them....dump out a bucket of Red Chieftains yesterday her in 🇨🇦....15 buckets more of several different varieties to go...
Iv got a tiny yard, I'm trying my hand at gardening for Mt mental health, I read that spuds are easy, so I just planted some old ones with eyes in some good soil...iv no idea what type they are ( store bought cheap value line ones), I'm using decent soil, and plant food once a week...they're growing green stalks thru the soil, what shall I do now please ?
I went to clear out an area in my yard and found potatoes! How do I know if they are ready to harvest, eventhough I pulled them from the ground! Would love to eat them but do not want to make everyone sick. Thanks
@@homegrowngarden Yes I was wondering how you store spuds . I definitely was not having a go at you. Your wedding is going to be spectacular. You like most brides are putting huge effort into it.
I'm clueless when it comes to gardening, this lady makes things a bit easier! Learning is easier with these videos! Thank you

I planted some type of red may 15. Still growing, I just wait until the plant dies off then harvest , probably September.

I’ll see about doing a video on this subject too but in short - don’t wash them, keep them someplace cool and dark.

Thanks. You answered my question, especially with regard to harvesting Charlotte potatoes.
That original video inspired me so ive grown mine in containers. But can you still leave them in the containers anyway for a while?
Leave them till next year if you want as long as they don't get waterlogged or frozen.

Here, in Madeira island, we harvest our potatoes when the tops die off. And we leave the potatoes in the soil for more 2 weeks tp harden the skin.
My Charlottes must have been really early, because I pulled them up mid June and they were really big. I did put them in at the same time as the first earlies.
Great advice as I lost my labels ! Going to start harvesting this week

I love your videos. I was wondering do you use potatoes from the market or do you buy the ones from a nursery ? Thank you. Janeen
On a video last year you had unidentified peppers. I miss identified them as Banana peppers as I had the same plant. Turns out they were Jalapeños.

Rule of thumb is 12 weeks after planting, depending on the weather, but 12 weeks is a good guide.

Eat them or store them to be eaten later!
