This game was my childhood, i beat it multiple times eith my brother, best childhood memory. Edit: i remember one of the last levels in dangerous dinner, the one with the meteors, my brother and me had a love hate relationship with that level, we called it the WEDNESDAY level cuz wednesday in spanish, our native language, is miercoles, wich kinda sounds like mierda, wich means shit.
I JUST bought this game on the Wii U eShop, right before they announced they were closing it! I am so glad I did too! It's one of the greatest games on the original Wii and one of the most beautiful! Well done, Nintendo! Well done!
For me Planet Robobot is the best modern kirby (and the entire series in general) but i cant deny how great and fun return to dreamland is, and i will always love magolor.
21:13 I still want to know what ties, if any, HR-D3 has to to the Shiver Star boss HR-H. Are Shiver Star and Halcandria tied together somehow? Both were advanced civilizations that were abandoned. Will the namesake Forgotten Land of the upcoming game with its own abandoned advanced civilization finally give us answers?
The tech could have been sent to Shiver Star at some point either before or after its transformation into a frozen wasteland. The Halcandrans were known for interdimensional travel, and many have theorized that even items like the star rod and fountain of dreams were possibly created by them.
13:40 It's just when like in Triple Deluxe you get to use the Hypernova ability to eat all Mini-Bosses, the sound of them exploding inside Kirby is inmensely satisfying, at one point you can eat around 3 at the same time, so the defeated Mini-Boss sound plays 3 times one after another. But it looks even more satisfying what goes on in Return to Dreamland, I was precisely thinking about buying the game recently (I don't care about spoilers, I knew about Magolor lying and stuff).
_The_ game that finally dethroned Super Star as my favorite Kirby game of all time. I _adore_ Return to Dream Land! It's one of the most charming games when it comes to encapsulating the feeling of going on a grand adventure with friends right from the beginning. I love the bosses, stages and Copy Abilities, and the final boss and soundtrack are legendary. This will always be the most iconic Kirby game to me, and brings back wonderful memories. It's simply one of my favorite games of all time.
My 3rd Kirby game and it was one of the greats both playing by myself along with my family for both clearing out the story along with those little moments of accidental deaths.
I always found interesting that they got many games cancelled on the GC era but i'm happy that we got Return to Dream Land is so good and i have no nostalgia here (I've first played it in 2018 and completed it 100% in both modes) really loved it except for some Dangerous Dinner levels. If Return to Dream Land wouldn't have been a good game the spear propeller would've saved it for me without a single doubt cause that ability is just silly in the best way possible...but the game is amazing so it makes it even better. Everytime someone mentions the ability rooms i get war flashbacks to get at least gold cause screw the platinum rank for some of those...including Dream Collection. Gotta admit how you described Nutty Noon was exactly how i can describe it in short and the tunes...man now they will be on my head again. 11:18 normally i don't like the sponsors cause sometimes they lack a bit of flare and man gotta give you points for that sponsor really clever loved it. The final boss tracks are so freaking good although the best on the series for me is at this moment the final boss tracks from the next game in this mini series. I don't know if i'm lucky or a prodigy at this game but on my first playthrough barring Dangerous Dinner and the new boss i had no issues but yeah that boss from the cancelled game kicked my ass twice. True Arena...no thanks just give me my hammer and some friends to brute force it. Return to Dream Land is just a beautiful game and i'm so happy that the series evolved in almost every entry. Great video Monger loved it
This is my favoruite kirby game, the plot , copy abilities and story are all just really amazing. It is also the one I grew up with and played with my brothers growing up.
I had this game as kid, beat it had a lot fun but didn't remember a lot of it (except Magolor off course). The music did somewhat stick with me, since I replayed some classic Kirby games and felt some familiar melodies
Return To Dream Land will always be my favourite Kirby game! I remember being so shocked when the Magolor twist happened. Also I remember gloating to my brother so much about how I finished the final boss by myself, since at that point I wasn’t very good and games and was kinda a sore loser when it came to something being even remotely difficult lol. Good times! 😅⭐️
It also is the only Kirby game I know of where another player can also play as Kirby newer ones you are stuck to that specific characters abilities and feel like the help and don't get to experience the magic of Kirby ability steal.
Kirby’s return to dreamland is incredibly nostalgic for me, but my favorite was triple deluxe because it was the first game I played that i was waiting for the release.
I remember playing this game constantly with almost all of my friends, and I got them all hooked on it somehow. I’m so happy Shinya Kumazaki came through and saved the series, as the Handheld Kirby games were on the lower end of the series IMO, and didn’t really show much passion for the series and felt made out of obligation by Flagship. I’m so happy the series picked up from here and continued to grow into something EVEN BIGGER than before. TDX improved the new formula and PR further refined the blueprints and took an ambitious jump! And now, Forgotten Land might do the same as RTDL, further pushing Kirby. I love this game so much for multiple reasons, thanks again Kumazaki, for giving this series a direction💖
Kirby planet Robobot is absolutely the PEAK of 2d Kirby, it's also in my opinion the hardest out of all mainline Kirby games, the true arena is absolutely brutal no matter what ability to choose to go with.
Watching this after the announcement of Return to Dreamland Deluxe, I just can't WAIT to find out where HAL decides to sneak in a Morpho Knight battle in this one, because we all know they will.
Return to Dreamland is my favorite Kirby game. It brought a fan like me so much joy for years to come since its release, I have so many fond memories of this title and I'm glad this video helped explained why. Good vid man 👍
Return to Dream Land is my favorite game of all time. I adore so much about it: the copy abilities, the amazing soundtrack, the gameplay, the settings... It's all *so good.* Great video!
This it's still in my top 3 of Kirby games, it's really the standard and Magolor it's such an iconic villain in the franchise Also the soundtrack it's very clean, i mean some of the tracks are still being used in future releases
i do like how magalore reforms after this. in kirbys dream collection he opens an amusement park for kirby as an apology for what he put kirby through. and as of star allies, it looks like it stuck.
Kirby Return to Dream Land on the Wii is my first kirby game, and it will always be my favorite Kirby game, and favorite game of all time! The remake is my preffered way to play it, and Magolor is one of my favorite villains of all time!
To this day, Kirby's Return To Dream Land remains my favorite game in the series for a multitude of reasons, but one reason that I'm kind of surprised wasn't brought up was the fact that it established just who the four main characters of the series are. Granted, Kirby, King Dedede and Meta Knight were all considered main characters even before this game was released, but with the addition of Bandana Waddle Dee the fandubbed Dream Team was finally rounded out! Yeah, I think one could probably tell that the core four characters of the Kirby series is one of my all time favorite takes on the found family trope. While I'm not sure if Return To Dream Land will still hold the title of my all time favorite Kirby game in the future, what with Forgotten Land just on the horizon and such, the game will still remain one of my favorite video games of all time. I can't thank Shinya Kumazaki and the other folks at HAL enough for getting Kirby right back on track with the modern era. Fantastic work on this, Monger!
Ah yes, Kirby's return to dreamland. Also known as the game i managed to 100% about six times and still not get tired of it. Considering how difficult it is for me to finish any videogame, it is a MIRACLE how much this game hooked me. 11 years later, still the best Kirby.
I actually found Under My Control to be both... sad, and mildly terrifying when I first heard it. It's clearly representative of the struggle Magolor is going through to retain control of not only the crown but also himself as the crown influences and suppresses him. Almost like a fight between the two presented in musical form. And by the time C.R.O.W.N.E.D comes around, it's clear who won the fight and Kirby's goal gains a duality; Destroy the master crown, *and* free Magolor from its control. You can even see in the first phase that Kirby's not trying to hit Magolor with the super sword, he's trying to hit the crown.
People always say that Robobot is much better, but I feel like they have never actually played multiplayer, which is a blast. The world also just felt so free and beautiful to me, and I loved the super abilities. And the ending is my favorite in the series, though I have only played all main series since RTDL plus the amazing mirror and a small amount of SSU.
i really love this game , it was my first kirby and one of the best childhood memory i have with my brother. I really like all the OST, game,Boss (especially the very last bosses), my brother just eating me and use me as a weapon because he was kirby. And my love for the character of metaknight because he was my main XD if I could play it again with my brother that would be great but we don't have as much time as before to do it, with high school for me and his studies it's complicated :')
Yeah, finally someone mentions Sky Waltz! It definitely is one of my favorite Kirby tracks in general because of how it fits the stage's theme and how calm it sounds. I love Sky Tower as much as the next person but i find Waltz in the Sky to be severely underrated compared to other more well-known Kirby songs
3:37 My favorite part of Whip is running away from a downhill waddle dee boulder (officially known as Rolling Waddle Dee) in Star Allies with it because Indiana Jones references.
While I did play the 3DS games first, and as such was more used to them, I did enjoy this game. Stone aboslutely breaks the arenas, which was weird given how tough the final boss was in the extra mode. Normally these bosses have the same level of difficulty for me.
This was my first Kirby game. For some reason they renamed it to Kirby's Adventure Wii in Australia where I live. I was confused for a long time whenever someone talked about Return to Dreamland. Took me a while to make the connection.
This is my favorite game. This is *that* game I played a billion times with my family. I love the soundtrack, there are so many youtubers that play Another Dimension in their videos without knowing where it comes from, and that makes me happy
I still think this is my favourite Kirby game to this day, no matter how great planet robobot and star allies are, and how beautiful kirby and the forgotten land looks. This game gives me a type of nostalgia no other games can ever give me
This video makes me feel vindicated in my belief in this game’s importance to the series, on top of just being a really great game. Thanks for this incredible video, it’s definitely one that I’m going to rewatch frequently. Also, ROBOBOT VIDEO COMING SOON WOOOO!
This is my favorite game ever half due to immense nostalgia and half due to it being so good. This was my very first game and it holds a special place in my heart for starting my gaming journey.
You forgot to mention how the first letters of each level spell CROWNED (Cookie Country, Raisin Ruins, Onion Ocean, White Wafers, Nutty Noon, Egg Engines, Dangerous Dinner). This has got to be my favorite detail of the game.
I just love playing this game! And yes. The dimensional rift stages are amazing! Except that the wall chases you which it feels like you being chased by that purple wall! And I also love when I push the wall back because it was like satisfied when it move backwards. But until it’ll start moving again for some reason. In main mode, I named this wall called “The Purple Wall Of Death.” In Ex Mode, I named this wall called “The Purple Wall Of Terror.” It’s one of my favourite part in this game! And I really want this game will be coming to Nintendo Switch. I will be hype if this game come. And also you can check out my gameplays of it in my playlist!
There's an amazing easter egg about this game's world names: Cookie Country Raisin Ruins Onion Ocean White Wafers Nutty Noon Egg Engines Dangerous Dinner In order, the alliterative letter in each name spells CROWNED.
Favorite game aside, this is easily the best story in the series imo. Sure it doesn't have as much world shattering lore as future games, but it more than makes up for that in execution. I haven't played planet robobot, but I feel the post-rtdl games up to ksa use lore as more of a cover up for the story that's actually there which is typically shallow. Triple deluxe for example: lore states that this guy simps for a girl and gifts him the amazing mirror, driving her insane while he continues to worship her. In execution: an evil guy grows a beanstalk, when cornered he summons worse guy who betrays him. Bad guy helps defeat worse guy. The rest of the plot is spoonfed through various mods and games rather than one contained story, even if it's interesting to theorize about. Rtdl does not have this problem. The story is what it is, there are no major plot points that are left to be concluded beyond the main story. Ironically, this is why I think the games finale is better than those which are arguably more climactic like ksa. You aren't fighting things from another game, you are fighting the very person you, in that specific storyline, considered a friend. I'm not saying lore is bad, it's fun to theorize how these games connect to others. What I'm saying is that the main story should back that up well and I hope forgotten lands thinks about the upfront story first before thinking about what they'll sprinkle in.
Return to dreamland is the start of what I like to call the CG Era (previously the Modern era before forgotten land as that’s a start of the 4th main Kirby era) which goes from this game until Star Allies. As the 3rd main Kirby era.
I need an assessment of the ramifications that the Magolor Epilogue add to the equation of the lore. Kirby Clash is basically canon now because of that ending isn’t it? Galacta Knight being acknowledged as the Aeon Hero is one thing, but the boss encounters like Mirror Dedede and the return (and destruction maybe?) of the Darkness Mirror or whatever it was called? That likely has ramifications on future entries doesn’t it?
I’m so glad that you talked about this game, I love this game so much. I’ve played almost every Kirby game and return to dreamland was always my favorite, and it’s easily my 3rd favorite game ever.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland was actually the first Kirby game I ever played, when I played it it felt like "this is THE game" at that point no other video game had ever gripped me by the synapses quite as hard as Return to Dreamland, and I'm pretty sure it built the foundation of what I want out of a game.
Return to Dreamland was my favorite game as a kid, I played it for hours every day with my friends after school. I'm so glad to finally see someone give it the appreciation it deserved
I really like this game too, as well as Kirby Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot which came out for 3DS after this game. It was a real pleasure to beat Main Mode and Extra Mode of this game and finally the True Arena to become a Kirby master as the game puts it. I find it great that this game even has a hard mode where they made so many changes, especially to the bosses.
Just beat this game for the first time last week. But I tried the arena with the High Jump power. Its invulnerability can be quite handy against some bosses
This game was and still is my favourite kirby game! (..atleast until forgotten land comes out, as it is shaping up to be a huge contender to take RtDLs place as my new favourite kirby game) It just has a certain charm to it that the games that suceeded it, albeit arguably better than RtDL in every way, simply lacks
Kirby Return to Dreamland is definitely one of my favorite Kirby games. While I still prefer Planet Robobot and Super Star Ultra, RtD still takes bronze mainly in part to the fun bosses, puzzles, and especially the Ability Challanges, being easily the best thing to come out of RtD.
This game will always have a special place in my heart. I loved getting to play with my sisters and goof about with the characters. Truly this game is one of the best gateways into Kirby
Been a fan since Kirby 64, minigames in it were amazing! Kirby Star Allies is like what everything has been leading up to! And I can imagine a fun day with friends playing it from beginning to end but my friends don't enjoy platformers, and Nintendo just refuses to properly incorporate online features into these kinds games...😒 anyways Only Gripe it's too easy
The true arena in the remake is much harder than the original version believe it or not. It trumps Planet Robobot’s True Arena in terms of difficulty and length.
Aside from the first gameboy game, and Kirby Bowl/ Golf/ Dreamcourse what ever region name it has, and the past few years a copy Kirby's Adventure for the famicom I picked up, I have almost no experience with this franchise, I've been aware of it but basically never touched it. Randomly decided to get The Forgotten Land, it was an amazing game, and has got me curious about the past games of the franchise. It's nice that some one has made a mini series talking about these games. Not sure if I care to invest in getting copies of all the games though, but the nice over view of the series is appreciated.
Assuming you still have access to a switch, Kirby Fighters 2 is about 20 dollars, if you want a preview of what 2D kirby feels like you can always purchase that and see if you like it or not
@@CodeKirby Well, since bought and played Star Allies, it's alright, it's not bad, it won't be a top favorite game or anything though. I honestly think the game could been alot better than it was with a few tweeks to allowing the player to roll solo, or to freely change between party members. There were multiple times when having 4 characters and flashing attacks and like multiple bosses at once, I just lost track of who or where I was on the screen. But also just for the challenge option of going solo would have been nice, or to freely use the friends you met along the way, not just tucked away using them in Guest Star mode. ------ As far as some older stuff though I've kinda ordered copies of the 3 super famicom games boxed which i'll be waiting a few more weeks on, and the two GBA games the Adventure remake, and the Amazing Mirror which are here now. I'll try the amazing mirror later, I already know I like adventure and will probably throw that in the game cube, right now infact.
THANK you for this video!!!! when talking about games i like, i Always bring up this one and how much it had an impact on the franchise!! this pretty much sums up everything ive been saying 😮
Imagine struggling during the opening 5 levels of the game, having not fought the boss yet because well, there was the mini boss rush, it must be the final one, and going back to 100% the other areas. You then struggle to kill the boss, winning with no extra lives... Only to realize you were lied to... And then again when you beat the dragon after 100% the other areas... And then, due to a lack of skills, you have to get your friends and family involved to kill the final boss, with them having popped in and out during the run. And now do it again with less health. This game redefined how I look at games, as I never 100% a game before then, but with how short I thought it was, I tried it and did it, minus the arenas for obvious reasons involving a shit ton of deaths, and I'll always love this game for it... And Deadpool for reaffirming my love for completing games... Not the combo most would expect, but that's the two games that made me complete games in the first place.
The super abilities are underrated. I every says that there the same every time when its really not. Each one controls differently and there all fun to use. There even used in boss fights.
Fun fact: according to a Japanese popularity poll for top 100(?) favorite games of all time, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is the most popular Kirby game in Japan, sitting in the top 50 even. The only other Kirby games that managed to make the ranking being Kirby Super Star and Kirby Air Ride.

This was a fun look back. Plus a nice way to enjoy nostalgia before the next Kirby games.
Excellent game
"a nice way to enjoy nostalgia before the next Kirby games."
The Next game: A remake of Return to DreamLand.
For me Planet Robobot is the best modern kirby (and the entire series in general) but i cant deny how great and fun return to dreamland is, and i will always love magolor.
Just bought that and haven't had time to get into it yet
It definitely has the best gimmick out of any kirby game
Hell yeah! Another Planet Robobot enjoyer!!
I fully agree with your entire opinion.
same, Robobot is the best but RTDL will always be my favorite

No.

Super Star Ultra is a very very very close second
My 3rd Kirby game and it was one of the greats both playing by myself along with my family for both clearing out the story along with those little moments of accidental deaths.
My 3rd too!
Exact one year later a remaster came out that is a crazy coincidance
The game that reignited my love for Kirby 🥰 looking forward to the new one next month and looking forward to watching this video!

Man I’m so excited for the remake, I played the heck outta this game on the Wii U shop
I still think this is my favourite Kirby game to this day, no matter how great planet robobot and star allies are, and how beautiful kirby and the forgotten land looks. This game gives me a type of nostalgia no other games can ever give me
It baffles me that me and my cousins managed to 100% both campaigns and all extra modes in one week when we were kids.
My first Kirby game, this right here got my hooked on the series and I wouldn’t have it any other way
My first ever Kirby game. I like every single song in this game and that's a rare thing to achieve!
Good to know I wasn’t the only person that took like 20 years to figure out you can spit stars at the wall.
This is my favourite Kirby game!! It's so good
There's an amazing easter egg about this game's world names:
Cookie Country
Raisin Ruins
Onion Ocean
White Wafers
Nutty Noon
Egg Engines
Dangerous Dinner
In order, the alliterative letter in each name spells CROWNED.
It's something they implemented through Planet Robobot, possibly even Star Allies
Love Love LOVE this game! Thank you for spotlighting RtDL in a video.
I love this game, definitely my favorite wii game and evenly one of my favorite video game of all time.
I love you for putting this in 4:45 it made me laugh way harder than i should have
I’m so glad that you talked about this game, I love this game so much.
RtDL was my first Kirby game I playd, and I still regard it as the Best Kirby game ever made. I am still realy hopeing for a Switch port
0:20 "blue" cube? 🤨
liked for the effort that went into the parasol dees keeping time to the music
14:03 that was King Dedede inside HR-D3 in that canceled game. Planet Robobot had a boss where 3 Dedede clones would pilot D3 as well
Just beat this game for the first time last week.
But I tried the arena with the High Jump power. Its invulnerability can be quite handy against some bosses
Waddle Dees swinging on parasols to the rhythm of Sky Waltz is one of the most precious things I've ever seen
I can remember the day me and my twin brother first got the game for our Wii when we were young and played it most of the time. Memories man.
SUCH A GOOD OST TOO! THIS GAME RULES
This game was and still is my favourite kirby game! (..atleast until forgotten land comes out, as it is shaping up to be a huge contender to take RtDLs place as my new favourite kirby game)
It just has a certain charm to it that the games that suceeded it, albeit arguably better than RtDL in every way, simply lacks
I played this game with my friends through and through! Love this game and this is why I love Kirby so much!
Been a fan since Kirby 64, minigames in it were amazing! Kirby Star Allies is like what everything has been leading up to! And I can imagine a fun day with friends playing it from beginning to end but my friends don't enjoy platformers, and Nintendo just refuses to properly incorporate online features into these kinds games...😒 anyways
Only Gripe it's too easy
woah never knew Lor Starcutter ran Squarespace for it's graphics processing.
Whip truly shines when you do the Down-Up + 1 combo
The true arena in the remake is much harder than the original version believe it or not. It trumps Planet Robobot’s True Arena in terms of difficulty and length.
KIRBYS RETURN TO DREAMLAND DELUXE THIS IS NOT A DRILL
This video was absolutely amazing, kirby return to dreamland is definitely one of my all time favorites
------
As far as some older stuff though I've kinda ordered copies of the 3 super famicom games boxed which i'll be waiting a few more weeks on, and the two GBA games the Adventure remake, and the Amazing Mirror which are here now.
4:46 lol, Taco Bell
The super abilities are underrated. I every says that there the same every time when its really not. Each one controls differently and there all fun to use. There even used in boss fights.
Gotta love Magolors redemption in the Special Edition of Kirby’s Dream Collection
I can’t wait for when you get to Plant Robobot in this Modern Kirby Retrospective series.
The call and response thing in "CROWNED" is more likely Magalor and Kirby. The more heroic sounding one being Kirby.
i don't really see a lot of people mentioning it in the comments here, so i just want to say shout out to your ad integration here.
amazing game i loved it as a kid and still do and now i can’t wait for the deluxe version on switch it looks beautiful
My personal favorite Kirby game. Hope co-op is fun in Forgotten Lands.
Rtdl is one of the few Kirby games you can beat entirely jumpless. Even Deluxe with the Magolor Epilogue.
Hey RPG Monger, it's getting a remake for the Switch! Now with the Dedede design from Forgotten land, a new ability, and more minigames!
2 new abilities now and even more
This was the first game I ever saw the nostalgia hits hard
I never knew you could shoot stars at the wall to send it back and I 100% that game 3 times each on normal then on ex mode.
And now that Kirby return to dreamland is coming to switch and I’ll get to play it
Fun fact: according to a Japanese popularity poll for top 100(?) favorite games of all time, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is the most popular Kirby game in Japan, sitting in the top 50 even. The only other Kirby games that managed to make the ranking being Kirby Super Star and Kirby Air Ride.
Don’t know why but the shoot ‘em
Up section on landia and the grand doomer boss fight we’re my biggest acomplishments at age 8
