when I was 13 years old I took lessons from Joe Porcaro , one day I came for my lesson and Joe said my son is in the studio playing
go in there and watch him. So I sat there and was just blown away and couldn't believe that I was sitting five feet from Jeff Porcaro layin down the tightest grooves , well I've never forgot it ,and he was so nice to me too. That memory will be with me til I die.

Besides the incredible talents of these musicians - the common denominator seems to be that they're good and kind people. Always professional, by showing up on time and being prepared, coupled with a respect for one another. Whatever discipline you're involved in, these factors hold true. Having a good sense of humor is a huge asset as well. Being able to share a laugh with one another - even if it's at your own expense, is icing on the cake! Here's to Jeff!

I got behind my first drum kit , a set of Beverly , ( English drum manufacturing co. latter to be bought out by Premier ) , at the age of 10 in1969 . My first inspiration was Ringo .Nothing unusual about that . While I was noodling around , the owner of the kit said ," come and watch this guy playing the drums on TV" , the programme was Hullaballoo . Fast forward 7 years to 1976 , I'm at a party and Dirty Low Down from Silk Degrees is playing and it knocks me out of the ball game . "who the hell is that" I ask myself .Holly scamoly , it's the same dude who cut some of my favourite tracks with Steely Dan , a band that remains my favourite to this day . Jeff Porcaro . Only then do I discover Jim Keltner , who had cut my other favourite tracks with Steely Dan . To cut a long story short , I bought that Beverly kit ( $5 US ) on the strength of what I had just witnessed in 1969 . Oh , and the drummer playing the Hullaballoo show , I subsequently found out years later , none other than Mr. Jim Keltner . My apologies for the long drawn out story but I had to get it out . These two Gentlemen are embedded into my soul interminably and am eternally grateful for that . Thanks Leland .

You're lucky, in a way. I've been playing since I was 14 (1976) and I really didn't "discover" Jeff Porcaro until about 5 years ago. I mean, I'd heard him play, but I never dived into the technique and groove and I was in my 50's before I realized what a monster he was.

Hearing these words from another well respected player like Jim Keltner adds so much more to the Legacy of Jeff Porcaro.. Lee, you and Jim have played beautifully with many of my favorite artists. I'm a guitarist who loves to play bass and have always loved your playing. You keep telling stories that warm my heart as you talk of the closeness and admiration/love you have for the many players and artists you've worked with. I don't know if non-musicians fully get that but the time/experience/love shared with fellow players is evident in all your stories. Thank you. Take, care, be well, rock on.

That is one of the most incredible stories I've ever heard about Jeff.
    A) something he couldn't quite get the feel of? There would be such a thing? Listen to Silk Degrees again. I think Jeff is in his early 20's? the maturity of his playing - _just_ on that 1 album - is staggering.
    B) and then out of sheer professionalism, complete absence of ego,....call in someone _else_ ?

Looked up Jeff Porcaro's discography. They didn't list a session he did with Ray Charles. Anyway Ray covers Paul Simon's "Still Crazy after all these Years" Dude...the groove, the feel and the way Jeff lays it down... you'll just have to take my word or better yet have a listen. Outstanding.

Andrew Sandoz Thanks for reminding me of this song; I have it in my library and this is so Jeff, as you say; behind the beat...Another “hidden gem” talking of behind the beat is his playing on “It’s a miracle” with Roger Waters from the album “Amused to death “. His snare drum is so wonderful and the space he makes between the notes is amongst the best he has ever done...and the fill is also remarkable. Just listen and enjoy 😊
