- Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the condition of radial head fractures, which are usually caused by falling onto an outstretched hand.
there is 4 types of Radial Head fractures:
Type I: Nondisplaced Fracture, No surgical treatment.
Type II: partial articular fracture with displacement, Less than 30% displaced more than 2mm, Fixation: Screws or Plate.
Type III: Comminuted fracture involving the entire radial head, Reduction & Fixation if stable fixation can be achieved, early excision can be done in type III for isolated cases( only 2mm proximal migration), observe the patient for wrist pain, excision and prosthesis is the treatment.
Type VI: Fracture of the radial head associated with dislocation of the elbow joint, reduction of the elbow dislocation and fixation of the fragments, Fixation is done with either plate or screws, if fixation cannot be achieved, the prosthetic replacement must be done.

First of all, thanks for such a quick answer. I didn't have any wrist pain, neither in the moment of accident, or in the days after that, or after surgery, or now. I was told that the elbow and hand will have normal functions and that even without radial head. I had that kind of "luck" that surgery was lead and performed by one of the best Croatian orthopedist surgeons.

if you have a wrist pain then you will have a problem
doc can excise the radial head without replacement if the wrist and elbow are stable

The patient I took the x-ray for had a radial head comminuted intra-articular fracture with 4mm displacement of the articular surface; what is the likely treatment and prognosis?
Sir I am Amar here.sir my left elbow has been injured in 1998 when I was 10 years and now from 2-3 days am feeling severe pain in elbow when I was done X ray there is clear fracture seen in neck of the radial elbow.what should I do sir plz suggest.
With this surgery will it restore full flexsion and extension. Or psychical therapy will help to restore full range of motion?

my son is 9 yrs old .he had a nasty fallandsuffered fracture and dislocation both in left elbow joint.the doctor advised surgery.is it advisable to go for surgery at such a young age.will phsiotherapy help him later if we donot go for surgery
I have a non displaced fracture, and have been going to the gym still -training on legs and abs. When do you think ill be okay to start lifting upper body again? One doctor said 6 weeks and another said 5.
I fractured my radial head last november. it was cracked but still together, so Type I fracture. Gigantic hematoma and massive pain for 2 months and zero movement. then it suddenly got a lot better. its all good now. but i got lucky..

I fractured my radial head, non displaced, on 10/19. I am no longer in splint or using sling, but I cannot straighten my arm. It seems to get stuck at 45 degree angle and when I push further it is very, very, very painful. Am I supposed to do physical therapy to help regain range of motion? I'm not supposed to see the orthopedist again until the middle of December and I'm just concerned that I should have more flexibility and don't want to wait too long and have things get worse. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
have you gain your full motion of arm? i got same injury, and can only straighten arm to 150 degree, but it has past 32 days from injury.

I broke my radial head on October 11, was in a sling for 2 weeks, when the Orthopedic doctor told me that I could go without it, and after x rays on November 17th he told me I was 100 percent healed and could do normal activities. I continued to have pain and called him 3 times, and then was referred to physical therapy, which wasn't going well. So I went to my primary care doctor who had more xrays done of my elbow and found out that it was not healed in November and is still broken. This is also the opinion of the radiologist who read the xrays. So, now I'm told not to use it at all, and put it back in a sling until I am seen by an orthopedic specialist, and I can't get an appointment until March. Needless to say I am frustrated and don't know if I'm doing the right thing for this elbow. I am also trying to work.

I had a radial head fracture not sure which one my pain has not stopped still waiting to get real treatment they decided to give me shots into the torn tendon and the joint so painful it did not help!! It’s been a while and due to Covid it’s slowed every down to get treatment! I don’t know why they are so like it’s fine when it’s not at all.. thanks for the information

@nabilebraheim doctor the part that i really think is affected is the anterior part of the ulna and specifically it is the olecranon or the elbow bursa. what im really going to ask is that should can i just have it under my own observation before consulting a doctor? the pain is bearable and only little annoying, and also i cant lift heavy things with my right arm. hope you reply doctor. thank you so much for your videos.

My radial head excision is done. 3 weeks ago . Still My arm and hand movement isn't working perfect . Also my arm is still looking not straight in elbow ... May I know my hand and arm will be perfect after some time ....?

hi aryun, I had a surgery 3 days after my comment cause my mrt showed 2 broken parts of the radialhead, it was a Mason 3 fracture. The operation (2 hours) went fine, I have 4 2mm screws in it, the operation thread's have been pulled after 2 weeks, I have a cast that I take off since week 3 post op for physiotherapy and for mobility exercises at home and it gets better now from day to day but iam not fully recovered, Mobility is at 70%, strength probably at 20% and yes the physio is painful, and I still feel the screws but I accepted the pain as a temporary friend. @nabilebraheim doctor, last night at a basketball practice, while running, i stumbled and naturally i reached out my right hand to gain control of the fall. but as it turned out, i was unable to continue playing because my right elbow hurts like hell. im hoping it's just sprain, not a fracture or dislocation. doctor, i can bend and straighten my elbow but it is with bearable pain. as i've also watched your other video regarding the anatomy of the elbow - to be continued next comment

i was at hospital last week and was told i had a radial injury to my elbow but i also have pain in my wrist, it's sometimes painful to even hold a cup, they also said to just keep it in a sling for 4-6 weeks is this normal or should i go to my doctor?
My Dr put me in a splint for 2 weeks and the rest of month I worked on my Range of Motion. I can do things now. Not straight. Wrist hurts and arm bones hurt. I am greatful I can groom myself now.
I had a radial head fracture on my left elbow (Dg: fractura capituli radii multirfagmentaris). The surgery was performed is: Arthrotomia cubiti sin et extripatio fragmenti. I was wandering, is it normal that they just extripated those fragments without putting any prothesis in the place where the radial head was before? I was told that's absolutly normal and that my elbow and arm could bi completly functional even without radial head.
I think mine is type 2 but not sure. Doctor didn't let me see my xray 😞 Now it has been almost 3 weeks now. I can't fully straighten my elbow. Just a little bit to go. I can't rotate my wrist like I use too. But still practicing. Next Monday on 22nd June is the day I visit my doctor. Really scared 😨 hope everything goes well

@@oblivion73eg Mrt showed that I have a Mason 3 fracture, so I had a surgery ( 4 screws) . I started physio therapy this week and I make progress but iam just at 70% of my mobility at the moment.
Had a type 3 April this year, the last week had to remove the prosthetic due to because it was coming out of the bone were it was inserted... .Now i have nothing suporting my arm...any thoughts?

I think my left arm had a type 2 elbow fracture 2 years ago but I didn't went to the physician but now it hurts a little on elbow and wrist of the left arm when I do push ups
I think the crack(in the lower bone of the elbow) is filled by the fat&meat that's why it hurts

sir, my radial head has been fractured in to tiny pices which cant b drilled so docter had removed my radial head and surgery has done withot puting rod so now m not getting momemt in my hand,,,,,,, since 2 weeks m visiting psychotherapist i got little moment so can u give me any sujjestion that i can recover and get ma hand a complite moment soon as possible

I had a radial head fracture 3 1/2 mths ago and surgery consisted of internal fixation of a plate. I have been doing PT and the extension of my arm is not getting easier or much better. What can I do or what can the docs do as another procedure to fix this problem. This problem is affecting my life way to much and I need to be able to extend my arm Pls help

Hi, thanks for your videos, they explain more than the doctors i have seen! I broke my radial head, type 1, 4 weeks ago, i now have full motion and can pull/lift with no problems also, but when i push down on something e.g a table or bike handlebars the fracture slips and all the muscles in my forearm go very tight and feel like they will tear. I told the fracture doctor this yesterday,he just said it will sort itself out & discharged me? Is this normal? He did not re xray to check progress.

@@foody4385 I didn't have a cast i was given nothing at all, doc told me that if you use a cast once it is healed i can lose full motion and may never be able to straighten it fully again, due to it healing bent right on a joint, instead he said straighten it out every day as best i can by pulling on it with my other arm gently, even if it hurts, as this will allow full range of motion when healed, and he was right, i can fully straighten no issues, it's like it was never broken. I was of course sceptical at first, and had to be really careful with it. Advice i would give is that once you think its healed and cast is gone, be careful as it can take many months to fully heal even if you think it is. I broke mine by going over handle bars and also dislocated shoulder on other arm at same time, so good job i didn't get a cast or id lose the ability to use either arm.....shoulder still not right, dislocates randomly even all these years later every so often. Mine was type 1 fracture, which i think means no displacement, but i'm pretty sure i displaced it myself as i coud literaly move the bone about by squeezing arm near elbow at one point. If yours already had displacement, which is type 2 i think, may explain why they gave you a cast. Also pulling on it with my other arm, which had a dislocated shoulder, caused it to dislocate again once lol, had to keep that arm pretty bent in a loose sling which i could remove, to pull on the other and make it straight haha. It was a tough few weeks for sure.

I cracked my radial head recently, and it’s gonna be a few more weeks before it heals. Even then on future xrays it’ll show up on the pictures even if it’s healed. I get sore, random moments of soreness especially during mornings when I first wake up but I’ve been healing well. I just have to do daily exercises for the arm, light exercise. Not to mention I also broke my two adult teeth in the front but I got them fixed. It’s like they were never broken. Unfortunately I can’t have hard (or extremely hard foods like apples and carrots) unless they’re cut up, or in the carrots case, cooked. No more corn on the cob either but cut corn is fine. This is forever, but it’s better than having hurtful teeth on a soft food diet. The cause of injury? I fell down the stairs at school. I have bruises all over my legs, my knees still hurt to kneel on. But to be fair, in my own words, “it could be a lot worse, and I just have to keep happy spirits.”

@@foody4385 unsure! I haven’t had an X-ray in a long time. Otherwise, healing went perfectly, and I only have occasional soreness in the areas that I fractured.
She has not recieved the actual xrays in email yet.

I'm 60, broke my radial head, type 2. I'm going thru physical therapy. Getting the arm straight is making progress, but moving the hand to the mouth is painful and not progressing very fast. My P t told me on the next visit I should take a pain pill..it's not going to be pleasant! I know I gotta push thru the pain. lamaze breathing like when I birthed my children 36 years ago is going to call me and in handy. Anyone have a good pain pill that's not addictive and I can drive myself?!

@@foody4385 thanks for asking! I'm much much better. It's been 4 months now since my surgery. My hand and finger movements are back to normal, sometimes tight in the mornings. My extension is almost there, in about an inch from totally straight. The flexion is much better too. Its tight most mornings and sometimes have to ice it to get to move more freely. I can easily get my hand to my mouth, eyes first thing. By the end of day, my last stretches are the best progress. I'm about 2 inches from being able to touch my shoulder! My shoulder has been having to heal and get strong along the way too because it compensated so much for the arm while in a cast. I've had to use a heated rice bag, Icy hot and a massage gun for my shoulder more than my elbow. I've had to keep taking Motrin/ Advil throughout. Good music while doing my stretches and strength building helps alot....my glass of wine or 2 at night before my last stretches helps to relax as well!!

@@foody4385 I had more than minimal displacement, and had have 2 pins. The scar tissue from the surgery had been an issue, but it's much better.
