SALTY & GRAHAM CAHILL | ABALONE MISSION

  • When the season is open here in WA all hell breaks loose along the Metro coast for the literally 1hr each weekend over 5 weekends. This is the only time Abalone license holders can get in the water and collect their bag worth. People die every season, some even try and buy licenses for their new born children and dogs alike just to get their hands on some fresh Abs. Head a little South though where the coastline is far more dangerous but you have the reefs to yourself.

Yes, once you've got your "eye" in ... boom, they're every where lol. Love it guys, thanks for the vid. They're a snail, a sea snail, hunter many back in New Zealand. I know it sounds silly but depending on the location back home (and if I'm alone) I'll wear a push bike helmet. In case I get knocked off my feet and driven into the rocks, head first. I don't bother if I'm out with a mate.

I used to dive for Abalone near Balcombe beach Port Philip Bay as a kid (for ever ago). I think I still have the Abalone bar in the shed, must be 55 years old now..
P.S. there were no licences or limits back then, mind you the water I dived in was about 15 feet deep and it was all hold the breath stuff.

Probably best not to use a paint scraper unless your 100% on taking it abalone are haemophiliacs so if you cut it and its undersize etc its gonna die, they have special plastic abalone knifes.
