Huh? We all loved this song in my music posse back in the day, a great deep cut, rarely heard on he radio. No bad songs on that album at all, wonder why someone would not like it?
Not popular doesn't equal "not good". I used to think Levee was boring and not good, but then the light went on and I started thinking it was their greatest work. Depends on where you are at in the moment. I disliked Trampled Under Foot for a long time to, and then one day I really watched it and was blown away. ua-cam.com/video/HGFITl5mFvs/v-deo.html&pp=ygUNemVwcGVsaW4gbGl2ZQ%3D%3D
The song was recorded in two takes. Mostly because Bonham could not do any more, it was so painful to play with four drumsticks. Jimmy Page was going for a sound he heard on a trip to Bombay. Robert is singing at the highest end of his vocal range to give it a fragility and sense of deep pain. John Paul Jones often doubles on his Jazz bass what Jimmy Page is playing but also a syncopated and melodic bass line. This song shows the high level of talent of each band member and as a band together.
Didn't know Bonzo had problems with this. But take after take, yeh, I could see that might cause problems with all that hardware in your hands. Michael Lee did a credible job of this song.
Essentially, all four limbs of John Bonham are doing different time sequences at the same time it's really freaking amazing.. the name of the song is due to the fact he's using two sticks in each hand. If you listen closely, you can hear them clacking together as he's playing.. I've seen guys on UA-cam tried to imitate this beat it doesn't look easy at all.. RIP John Bonham, one of the greatest drummers of all time
Another great deep cut, that was rarely on the radio but a unique, hard hitting rocker with deep lyrics and Robert Plant again using his vocals as another amazing instrument. Epic feel, they just make music that seems important, from supremely talented musicians in a band that is even greater than the sum of its parts. Amazing still, their stuff is so different from the throw away dreck that passes for much modern music. More Zeppelin! The last 2 cuts on this album will also blow your mind! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥
Only a recent subscriber to your channel Rosalie and have to say I'm now a big fan of your work as you go on this Led Zep journey. Your reactions are so refreshing and you articulate your thoughts so well. Love your facial expressions too as you get right into the music. Led Zep are the GOAT and their catalogue is vast and varied. Looking forward to rediscovering their music on this journey with you ❤
As a Real original Zep fan, and mega-fan of the time... just a toddler when my sister and i would mimic the sound of the Immigrant Song in the back seat of dad's car, these reviews by you have been Really pleasant to hear. First, it's very nice that you articulate the musical elements so accurately, yet naturally. Big thanks for that. Next, and Most Importantly is that you Really never heard Zeppelin. Holy cow that's (this) is priceless. I wouldn't have believed it if you didn't prove it beyond the shadow of a doubt with Whole Lotta Love (which i should comment on how the meaning of the sexuality you hear, was Really heard). So that's just flat-out unique and ads a Real blessing to your positive reviews here (for someone like me... i turned ALL my friends onto Zeppelin back in the day... teenagers pulling apart the instruments and virtuosity you only hear when you zero in) And lastly... this comes down to your ear and life experience: how grouding it is to hear you so accurately interpret the tonality, not just from Robert, but the melody and indeed, Themes. Now, Four Sticks, while classic early Zep, would for me only be middle of the pack.. But WHAT a pack. I can only think of two tunes among their 76 released that i might ever skip. So really, you won't believe what real Versatility has yet to greet you, whether you go backwards to their Most legendary stuff, or forward to the albums they flung off having really honed their teamwork. As any real Zep fan, i can't tell you what albums to pick up next... You could jump back to Zeppelin II and the most ROCK song Ever, even Heartbreaker. Or Zeppelin III and the astounding, life affirmation of Friends. You could just continue chronologically to Houses of The Holy, and hit such true fan favorites as Over The Hills and Far Away. I'm not sure you want to continue this journey with such depth and time however. Therefore i might suggest you skip ahead to the double album; Physical Graffiti... So many gems, and not under any specific Americana sound as you find sets a tone for the other albums. In My Time of Dying stands out as Seminal. It can never not be Classic... and it fits exactly the moniker that came to fit Zeppelin so well: Atomic Blues. Sorry to write so much, trust me, i was more than brief. 😉 Thanks so much for these ✌️ ☮️ 🕊
I'm a drummer. Four Sticks was always a palate cleanser, as you work your way through the album. To this day I still can't quote a lyric. ""It's cryin' time"? It sounds so good. There are no 'skip-over' songs when listening to Zep.
The song "Four Sticks" by Led Zeppelin is named after the way drummer John Bonham played the song, with two sets of two drumsticks, or four sticks in total. The unique click-clack sound of the song was created by Bonham using an extra stick for each hand, which was then picked up by the microphones. The clattering of the sticks provided percussion to complement the song's twists and turns
That tension is created by the odd time signature (5/4). It's also what gives the song the sensation of "rolling along". Like Tarkus from Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP).
Battle of Evermore is the greatest song ever made. "Four Sticks" is titled because John Bonham played the drums with 2 sticks in each hand. Hence they named it "The Four Sticks." He played the drums with four sticks. (Sorry, I'm a Led Zeppelin historian.)
As I said Rosalie this album just keeps getting better as it goes. AND there's more to come - maybe the best 2 songs on the LP remain. Considering how great the first 6 songs have been, that is no small feat. This is arguably the greatest LP ever released.
This song was tough even for one of the Greatest drummers ever . During a break Stu (Ian Stewart) Rolling Stones keyboardist started playing a Little Richard song Bonzo appropriately played the drums , Robert & Jimmy chimed in . The song would become "Rock and Roll" P.s. one of the most appeared in Zeppelin music catalog as a guest
My understanding was, Bonham was getting frustrated trying to play it, he took a break & started beating out Little Richard’s Keep A Knocking. Jimmy picked up the guitar & started playing, & JPJ & Plant did. The tape was already rolling, so it recorded what became Rock & Roll, it was all done in about 15 minutes. They then went back to Four Sticks, & Bonham then got it on the first time. Only played live one to maybe a couple times, it was hard for Bonham to play with the 4 sticks.
Yea, Bonzo went out to a show while they were recording this album and saw a drummer playing with 4 sticks. He went right back to the studio after the show and within 24 hrs this song was written and recorded.
Great interpretation and insight into the possibilities of the meaning of this song and I suppose it depends on our own perspective though personal life experiences
One of my favorites. So Led Zeppelin. Lurching syncopated guitar riff, virtuoso drumming, syncopated arrhythmic vocals, orchestrated guitar parts and synthesizers in parts of the songs. Just them doing the Zep thing, but particularly well. Always loved this song, but admit never paid much attention to the lyrics. Nice reaction.
Before Led Zeppelin, Indian influence in contemporary western music was adding a sitar.. With Four Sticks, Zeppelin played a song heavily influenced by Indian music with rock instruments. Always the innovators. The Plant and Page collaboration on the 1990s took this further will Arab music as the foundation.
Growing up I had a very chaotic childhood due to a father who was an addict and alcoholic. So when it comes to songs no matter how great they are how great the band is when there's moments of chaoticness I kind of get funky. It's taking me many years to understand that of why there's certain songs from led Zeppelin or other artists, it made me feel uncomfortable and this is one of them. I appreciate the art and I do appreciate how it has me feeling different ways even though it's uncomfortable I do appreciate the fact that they're able to do it
It was when you mentioned the chaoticness early in the video is when I was able to put my finger on it and why I felt uncomfortable.. so thanks for being a part of that epiphany 😀
I like the song. I just assumed that it was about the chaotic schedules and keeping up with touring and recording schedules while juggling with their personal lives Good reaction
Listened to Live in Seattle 7/17/ 1973 bootleg earlier. Before Misty Mountain Hop he says, "this is about when you get out cigarette papers ..." It's not mystical...it's about getting "harassed by the man" for smoking weed. Trust me.
Another great reaction. Your very wise and have an ear for music. My question is.. Why would you start with their 4th album.!? Their first album is very bluesy plus you can track them from the beginning and how far they've come along. Either way you've chosen a great album. You can never go wrong starting with the first album all the way to 1979, In Through The Out Door, album. Thanks for keeping it real. Big fan.
I hope you continue reacting to Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant has come up with some of the greatest lyrics ever. One song in particular that comes to mind is Ten Year Gone. It was going to be an instrumental but after listening to it, Robert wrote some great lyrics.
"Something different" in each new song was quite quintessential during the inventing of the genre "hard rock", I think. Relatively new to me: the origin of the guy, shown on the cover. Of West England Aufgenommen von Ernest Howard Farmer, erster Direktor der Schule an der Regent Street Polytechnic If Mr. Long had ever known that he would be on the cover of one of the most iconic rock albums, so many decades later....
The Rain Song. Not sure if are really.😊 Insanely good and astoundingly beautiful. What is the he mystery of the quotient? Maybe a little rain. You will get to this song and listen like you have listened like never before. At least you be so glad to have heard.
You could use this track in any number of movies. It has that drama thing going on. The band's versatility is on full display here, they never stopped innovating. Robert's vocals were surreal. This must have been shortly before his surgery because he was in top form.
Great video! Thank you! This song especially has an element of chaos. Yes, there is turmoil because that's what makes it special. It's that uneasy feeling you can get which is what makes it unique. Take a deeper dive into Led Zeppelin with the double album Physical Graffiti......take about a range of music! John Bonham would use four sticks at times....or no sticks at all.
This is actually my favorite Zep album IIII ,,,, the first time I heard it was in 1979, I was 14 ,, we played this album endlessly,, and at that time album was 7 years old and still a huge hit.. what makes them the greatest band of all time ,, is the music is on the charts for decades..✌️
I'm looking forward to your reaction to "When the Levee Breaks". _THE_ most bad ass drumbeat 🥁 in any song, ever. Only Zeppelin can make a harmonica sound bad ass too.
I can't remember which band member, John Paul Jones perhaps, stated that they rarely performed this on stage because it was too hard to play. I read this 202 years ago so I forget exactly what they said about it
The Next song on the list is "Going to California" Highly recommend live ua-cam.com/video/nhVfuacsLDw/v-deo.html This will show you their soft side. One of there top 10
I listened to this back in the 70s, and was a drummer, but when you mentioned the chaos I realized that some of this is in 5/8 and some on 6/8 time signature while taping along in half time 'cause it doesn't work!
Also during the recording John got frustrated and then they just came up with rock n roll hence the monster drum intro and recorded the song in 14mins 🤯
The lyrics of this song were/are a warning. In my view Robert was singing about how this “woman” is not being so charitable is him speaking how society/government/countries instead of working together, wage war. Basically,..”Attention,..Learn to wise up and unite or face the dire consequences of the warmongers.” And yet here we are. ❤
Many albums back then had filler songs, (to fill up the required minutes on an album usually 20 to 25 minutes a side) and I believe this was one. I knew what the song was going to sound like from the title. John Bonham holding two sticks in each hand.
This is NOT a filler song in any way! It was important to them so despite how much of a challenge it was they persevered and Bonham was determined to get it right. Came back to it with the idea of 4 drumsticks and it finally worked. They didn't include it in their live performances because it was too hard to get it right. But NOT A FILLER. A filler is a lesser song that they could feel indifferent to.
Great analysis maybe the next full Album should be Pink Floyd they are not only a great collection of songs but a whole concept album each song a chapter in the story and fantastic lyrics to boot Dark side of the moon, wish you were here, Animals or the Wall
4 stick drumming comes - as far as i know - from the Marimba, but they use not normal drum sticks. In western Rock and Jazz only a few drummers using this technique i think. John Bonham, Steve Gadd and Billy Cobham for an example. This is for the big boys, not the rookies... 😉
Don't know the song that well, but seems to start in 5/4 (but throws extra bars of different time sigs), and swaps to 3/4. I imagine that ramps up the chaos
I don't know what the technical terms are (I'm not Rick Beato), but there is so much discordancy in the chord structures in this song. It throws you off balance. It has a menacing presence to it.
The lyrics of this song are the opposite of Stairway. The guy wants to break up with his girlfriend and go his own way. However, it is a downward spiral. Almost a trip to the River Styx. You are spot on with your analysis.
I remember my dad buying this album for me at K Mart, since it did not have long haired rockers on the album, he thought it was safe for me to listen to. Hmmm, this old man carrying a bunch of sticks on his back? Cool with me. Haa.
I've always felt that Plant's vocal sounds speeded up on this song. Almost as if the backing track was played back at a slower speed when he laid down the vocals (maybe because it allows him to sing in a lower key), and the completed mix was done at the proper speed. His vocals have a bit of that "chipmunk" sound, and it's always put me off. Lisen to the version on the Page/Plant "Unledded" album and it sounds better in the proper key.
A lot of people don’t like this song, but I think it’s brilliant!
Today I like, I learned
Huh? We all loved this song in my music posse back in the day, a great deep cut, rarely heard on he radio. No bad songs on that album at all, wonder why someone would not like it?
A lot? Like who? Gimme names, I’ll take care of it.
Supongo que debe ser porque es algo monótona, pero a mi me gusta!

Bonzo playing with four drumsticks ❤
Bonzo could play anything with any number of sticks - 2, 4 or even none!
This was groundbreaking at the time, and only Jason has been able to replicate his fathers drumming in this manner
THE greatest band in history bar none . Their will never be another Zepp . May the airship fly forever .
The reason it's called 4 sticks
Is because John Bonham is using 4 drum sticks which gives the drums a unique sound
Wait until you get to the last song on the album, "When the Levee Breaks." It's another masterpiece.
Thats why they were my #1 band for over 50 yrs Rosalie. Such brilliance. No one artist stood out all the time. All equally on same playing field
I love this song. It just kicks.
GOATS….PERIOD!😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Nail on the head, young Lady! Don’t know why fans don’t like this one…it’s epic!
Essentially, all four limbs of John Bonham are doing different time sequences at the same time it's really freaking amazing.. the name of the song is due to the fact he's using two sticks in each hand. My favorite plant vocal effort, the chaos, torment, he envokes it's beautiful anger, hence the red color

THE GREATEST BAND EVER HANDS DOWN !!!!!❤😊
When you get to the first album from Rush you'll hear a lot of Zeppelin influence.
Page said they struggled with it to begin with then went right into Rock and Roll.
So glad you're loving this album like i always have!

I love your break down!!
The joys of 5/8 and 6/8 time signatures mixed together.
A very beautiful and interesting interpretation of the lyrics.
Crazy unique song! Love zep!

Going to California is the next song will surprise you. Waiting!!!!!!
I love this song. What's not to love. As always with LZ it's instantly memorable.
You should do a listen through the first 2 Led Zeppelin albums as well! You won't be disappointed!
Trippin Dude!!🤘🏾😎🤘🏾
For me, the greatest track music of Led Zep! in terms
I appreciate the art and I do appreciate how it has me feeling different ways even though it's uncomfortable I do appreciate the fact that they're able to do it
Chaoticness triggers me but I'm learning how to deal with the triggers now that I'm at the age of 53 and figuring a few things out
It was when you mentioned the chaoticness early in the video is when I was able to put my finger on it and why I felt uncomfortable.. so thanks for being a part of that epiphany 😀
The clacking you hear in the percussion is the pairs of drumsticks hitting each other as he plays the drums.
I like the song. I just assumed that it was about the chaotic schedules and keeping up with touring and recording schedules while juggling with their personal lives Good reaction
Listened to Live in Seattle 7/17/ 1973 bootleg earlier.
Before Misty Mountain Hop he says, "this is about when you get out cigarette papers ..."
It's not mystical...it's about getting "harassed by the man" for smoking weed.
Big fan.
The song Rock and Roll was born here. While recording this Bonzo started playing the beginning of a Little Richard song. This relieved the tension.
I hope you continue reacting to Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant has come up with some of the greatest lyrics ever. One song in particular that comes to mind is Ten Year Gone. It was going to be an instrumental but after listening to it, Robert wrote some great lyrics.
They were always pushing things further, yet playing with other genres at the most surprising times
Trippin Dude!!!
"Something different" in each new song was quite quintessential during the inventing of the genre "hard rock", I think.
Relatively new to me: the origin of the guy, shown on the cover. I did translate the information to german:
Lot Long, Strohdachdecker aus Mere nahe Salisbury
Fotografie aus 1892 erkannt von Brian Edwards / Uni. Of West England
Aufgenommen von Ernest Howard Farmer, erster Direktor der
Schule an der Regent Street Polytechnic
If Mr. Long had ever known that he would be on the cover of one of the most iconic rock albums, so many decades later....
They have an EP called House's of the Holy...... its 1 of a 2 disc set but u can buy it solo, u should do a video for each song on the EP
Please do the other two songs soon. the last song will convince you, this is the greatest album of all time!!!!
The fun of art, the art of fun.
Respect, but I just love the raw power of I.
The GODS of rock. Period!
I'm looking forward to your reaction to "When the Levee Breaks". _THE_ most bad ass drumbeat 🥁 in any song, ever. Only Zeppelin can make a harmonica sound bad ass too.
theres a great version with orchestra Plant and Paige album
Page
You need to listen to the live version from page plant no quarter from 1994 / this is Zeppelin doing prog work insane !!!!
I think l if you're looking for diversity in a Led Zeppelin album then, in my opinion, nothing beats Led Zeppelin III.
I can't remember which band member, John Paul Jones perhaps, stated that they rarely performed this on stage because it was too hard to play. I read this 202 years ago so I forget exactly what they said about it
My favorite reactor.
Bonham playin that African beat, love it, makes me feel its about to get down.
Yeah, a Little Richard song actually
Indian beat I believe. But I could be wrong
Robert's free form at the end is pretty sublime really. This song is sadly underappreciated
The Next song on the list is "Going to California" Highly recommend live ua-cam.com/video/nhVfuacsLDw/v-deo.html
This will show you their soft side. One of there top 10
Underrated track but I think it's superb
Robert sounds like he is in Pain at the end!!!
Intense instrumentation. Emotional vocals.
The Mighty Zeppelin
I listened to this back in the 70s, and was a drummer, but when you mentioned the chaos I realized that some of this is in 5/8 and some on 6/8 time signature while taping along in half time 'cause it doesn't work!
I enjoy and appreciate your reactions so much but I do wonder why you are “starting” with IV? What about 1, 2 and 3?
The BEAST was using four drumsticks on this.
Also during the recording John got frustrated and then they just came up with rock n roll hence the monster drum intro and recorded the song in 14mins 🤯
Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple the holy triad of rock music🤘
Very smart woman, Rosalie.
There is a lot of JPJ influence in this... listen to his song "Thunderthief" from 2001. A lot of this harshnesswith the Bass in "4 sticks"...
The lyrics of this song were/are a warning.
In my view Robert was singing about how this “woman” is not being so charitable is him speaking how society/government/countries instead of working together, wage war.
Basically,..”Attention,..Learn to wise up and unite or face the dire consequences of the warmongers.”
And yet here we are. ❤

The riff has a brief quarter tone in it which is not normally used in western music. It's darker sounding to our ears.
Also, the synth has a dark harmonic added.
4 stick drumming comes - as far as i know - from the Marimba, but they use not normal drum sticks. In western Rock and Jazz only a few drummers using this technique i think. John Bonham, Steve Gadd and Billy Cobham for an example. This is for the big boys, not the rookies... 😉
❤❤who can’t love Led Zeppelin 👍👍👍👍😢
Don't know the song that well, but seems to start in 5/4 (but throws extra bars of different time sigs), and swaps to 3/4. I imagine that ramps up the chaos
I think that chaotic feeling is because the riff/verse is in 5/4
Bonus point for your patience
How about some Deep Purple. Would love to hear your response on the singer.
They only perform this once or twice live. Mostly because it shred Robert voice . Well worth a listen , incredible. I think live in Germany
Bonzo is playing crazy like because he is using four sticks
Odd time signature
Antonetta Shore
Pretty good band
Understatement of the CENTURY 😂😂😂😂
I don't know what the technical terms are (I'm not Rick Beato), but there is so much discordancy in the chord structures in this song. It throws you off balance. It has a menacing presence to it.
The lyrics of this song are the opposite of Stairway. The guy wants to break up with his girlfriend and go his own way. However, it is a downward spiral. Almost a trip to the River Styx. You are spot on with your analysis.
👍👍❤️👍👍
