Mia Morris / music vlog #28 “this is spinal mia” - live rock shows in Nashville TN -

  • I got a call about doing a series of shows at a club that I love in downtown Nashville called 3rd & Lindsley. The first show I ever saw at that venue was Scott Mulvahill, (awesome night) and I was quick to say yes even though there would only be a couple of weeks to put a band together and rehearse for the show. I would be opening up for a roots rock band that had some success back in the 90’s called Bonepony that now lives in Nashville. Actually, after meeting the band, I found out that the guitar player went to the same high school that I’m currently in - Go Bruins!
Luckily, I only had to call a few players I knew to put together my 3-piece. For these 4 shows, I had Sam Hunter on guitar and Ysa Fernandez on bass. If you pay really close attention to my vlogs, you can actually see both of them in episodes from years past where we’ve all been hired to play for other artists at various shows. Both Ysa and Sam are artists and multi instrumentalists as well and were kind enough to learn my songs and spend the month with me doing a set every Tuesday night. In addition to being an artists and producer, Sam spends a lot of his time working as a session player and has toured with some pretty famous artists thus far in his career.
After looking through some of the footage from the first couple of shows, I decided this vlog might be a good time to give a nod to one of the most iconic mocumentaries of all time, This is Spinal Tap. If you’re around a few musicians for much time at all, you will begin to memorize some of the many quotable lines from this timeless movie about the life cycle of a rock star. It’s funny, entertaining, sad and unfortunately, accurate at times. If you haven’t yet seen it, I recommend it.
I’m 16 years old and I want to be a music professional when I grow up. I try to play lots of instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend a lot of my time writing and recording. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 5 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing music, keep loving it and keep getting better.

You rocked that stage girl. It was easy to tell, that you got more comfortable each show. I'm glad I could make it to all four shows. Oh, and since I got a front row table, I don't mind you missing the sticks. :) Thanks for making sure one of them came my way, and for the signature and photo. Keep on Rockin' Mia!

Four of the best nights ever! Sooo fun! And you were amazing, especially for your first time fronting your own band. You are a natural born performer. You could definitely be in musical theater, movies, TV, etc. I mentioned a SAG card a long time ago and still think you'll need one at some point.
Sam and Ysa were also so good. True professionals. I think Sam might get more work now that he can play megaphone. 😁 I follow both now on IG and YT. They are very talented musicians.
Glad you put in a snippet of Only When It Rains. Love that chorus. It comes in so strong. Hope you record and release it sometime. Cat Fight was also a blast! And that encore .. Fa La La La Funny! We asked for it and we got it. 😱😂😂
I knew I would get carried away on this Vlog. I just really loved being at those shows, and it's not lost on me how fortunate I was to be able to attend. My road trips just don't feel as long now. 😎
I'll close this verbose ramble with this fun fact: Scott Mulvahill was also my first 3rd and Lindsley show. It was just after they opened from shutdown last October. Maybe you can open for him sometime!! That would be cool. I've seen Scott play 8 times now. Thank you for the introduction.
Great Vlog Mia! Looking forward to more and more of everything you present to us. Have a wonderful weekend Neighbor! 😁🤘💕😎

MIa, I got to say I really enjoy all your music, and your vlogs just as much. Seeing you onstage is kind of bitter sweet, knowing the likelyhood of me seeing you play live is not high, but the vlog, and others, such only makes me what to porve myself wrong.
Regardless, your videos, and streming your music sure is plenty to go on with.
These behind the scenes moments, be they scripted or not, are so entertaining. You are your dad would make a great comedy duo, though please don't give up your evening job. In fact the sooner music is your full time job the better for all.
Don't get me wrong, your education is still very importnat, and a must for sure. But you don't need to hear that from me.
Thanks so much for all you put into your music, this channel, and other social media, and the time you give to your fans too. Replies are never expected, and I am greatful for the times you can, and do comment. It will become harder and harder to do so as your fanbase keeps growning, and you get more and more gig opertunities. They will come, and I am sure the day will come where some other artists will me over the moon to be opening for you!
Thanks Mia, and to your team too.... Have a great weekend.

Thank you for such a kind and supportive comment. The one thing that was scripted in this one was we had decided to to something with our shows and spinal tap so, I made sure I filmed that trip in through the back door on the 4th week. I could picture the ST scene perfectly when I was doing it and it was a challenge to keep a straight face. The mask came in handy..

The turnout was light but actually got better each week. Everyone there was completely supportive and the audience was pretty much full of folks that knew most of the songs but by the 3rd week, something interesting happened. The folks that came out for the headliner started to really get into it as well and we even had some folks that had heard, Gone My Way on the radio that week :) I got just a tiny glimpse of what it could be like to turn a random audience into music fans and it was a complete RUSH!

I saw "This Is Spinal Tap" shortly after it came out in 1984. Anyone who's been around musicians knows how fine of a line there is between fact and fiction. The way you weaved together your facts and their fiction was delightful. When you held up your band-aids, I heard a cymbal crash, and then someone screamed "I got blisters on my fingers." Based on your last Instagram post, I have a feeling we may be about to hear "Only When It Rains" pretty soon. I only wish I could hear you play a live set, and dance my tush off. Someday. Have a great weekend. Stay safe.

New song idea for Mia "My Wimpy Fingers"!
My wimpy fingers bleed and crack,
but when I play I just attack.
So, now I've got the band-aids on,
and finally I can sing my song.
And yet I play with painful hands,
the things I do to please my fans.
And still I play another gig,
wondering when I'll make it big.
My family helps me left and right,
Our family bond is super tight.
Now Mom's making a tasty treat,
and after all a girls gotta eat.
Okay, not my best but there you go. Lol. Hope you like it.

Hi Mia, nice VLOG filled with Lots of laughs as usual. Wow your live sound is impressive. The group is really tight. "Cuz I Like It" appears to be an ideal song for live performances to get the party started. I wish I could drive down to see a show, but the 1400 mile drive from my home is a bit much... 😉How come I don't know "Only when it Rains"? What song is that from? BTW, direct your drumsticks more to the back when throwing them in the air. You have room to move back a bit to catch them, otherwise falling forward over your drums would be a disaster... 😋Take care. :-)

    Mia,
I give you credit for drumming and singing at the same time in concert. That's not an easy thing to do considering how active your body is drumming. I understand what you meant by practicing your breathing. Back in 1999 I went to a Journey concert, at Wolf Trap in Virginia, and the drummer gave the lead singer, Steve Augeri, a quick break and sang Keep on Runnin' while drumming the song and at first my friend and I had no idea it was the drummer singing because his voice was perfect with no fluctuations during the song.

    • @miamorrismusic
      @miamorrismusic  3 роки тому +1

I think it's a lot like a singer running around the stage but I'm starting to figure out the spots where I need to conserve and keep my breathing the priority. Fun stuff, regardless.

    • @thereturningshadow
      @thereturningshadow 3 роки тому

@@miamorrismusic True, but a singer can stop moving and stand in one spot to catch their breath or stop singing during parts of the song. Drumming and singing at the same time takes up more energy and is more strenuous. So in my eyes you are doing the harder job because you can't stop drumming even when you stop singing. Take the credit you deserve.

good catch. I use those only because I've got that headset mic and they have pretty large patters where the pick up sound. I've had to go with lower volume cymbals to get enough control over the mix out front. The cymbals have mics on them or you wouldn't hear much but the balance is actually about right with these in small clubs. I've got one set that puts out a little more volume that will probably be better on outdoor stages or big rooms but I don't see my regular, "studio" cymbals ever working while I'm singing. I like to hit my drums too hard for that :)

Get a basketball. In any position practice shooting it straight up so that it will come straight back down. You'll never lose a drum stick again. That's the rumour!

The interjection with the movie clips was fantastic. I really like those leather pants or maybe synthetic, is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho? You hit the notes at the end good breath control. Remind your keyboard player a mask will do zip to keep out anything 1/10th the size of the holes except deprive her of needed oxygen and recycle useless carbon dioxide.
