  • How Much Moisture is in Your Hearing Aids? | Redux Dehydration. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions talks about the importance of keeping your hearing aids as dry as possible by taking your hearing aids to a hearing care professional who uses the Redux Professional Hearing Aid Dehydration System to dehydrate and measure the amount of moisture removed from your hearing aids.

    What a great video! Having worn hearing aids for decades, I try my best to avoid anything that might introduce moisture to them. I don’t wear them when working outside, exercising, etc. and I put them in a dryer every night. Sometimes I’ll run the dryer twice if I don’t need them right away the next day. But you can bet I’m going to be asking my audiologist about this PRONTO!

      At-home dehydration is important. The question becomes, how effective is your system at actually getting ALL of the moisture out?

    I asked my Audiologist if they had heard about this device, and mentioned your channel. She lit up and told me she had met you at a seminar in AZ. We both agree: Great practice!

    Thanks for this video! This video actually talks about an issue I have had in the past with all of my hearing aids...I am younger than the average hearing aid wearer (30) and quite active and have had several issues in the past due to my sweating. I know CIC/IIC would probably be my the best option usually but I have a moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears. Do you have any suggestions for newer hearing aids (BTE or in ear versions) that should work good with sweat based on what you have seen? The Audiologists I have used within the past 10yrs have all told me "oh this hearing aid is perfect it is water-resistant" but they really didn't seem to be.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      Most hearing aids are getting into the IP68 range which theoretically good enough to handle submersion into water. However, I have noticed that even these hearing aids are subject to moisture issues. Your best bet is to ensure you have an IP68 hearing aid and dehydrate those suckers every single day and after significant moisture exposure.

      Doctor Cliff, AuD thanks for such a quick response! I have used a hearing aid dehumidifier for a while but may look into a better option to use at home since I have definitely experienced the microphone drift you mentioned in the video. Going to try and find someone near me with the Redux system to try that out as well. Thanks again!

      Hello JC , my son 2 year old is diagnosed to have moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears . Most doctors suggested not to go for cochlear implant as he can develop speech with hearing aids .
      I just wanted to ask how is it with hearing aids ? Do u ever feel like going for an implant and how is ur speech ( in assuming u have HL since infancy ) thanks in advance JC .., ur reply will be helpful for us .

    I use the Zephyr dryer daily but wonder if Redux has any plans to make compact dehydrators for consumers to use at home between audiology visits.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      Not sure, they've been doing dehydrators for cell phones for several years, now just getting into the hearing aid dehydration area. Not sure units like these, even if they were smaller, would be cost effective for most consumers.

  • @spydercrabb1990

    The Redux appears to be the perfect solution for removing moisture but what about other substances that were contained within the water (such as sodium in sweat, which itself can be quite corrosive)? Not saying it should deter anyone from having moisture removed because it obviously has an extremely adverse effect on hearing aids (I am younger and have had my fair share of issues thanks to sweat) but is there a way to more thoroughly clean the hearing aids of ALL substances that could have been carried in with the water?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      Great question. Redux actually recommends in some cases that an ultrasonic bath with distilled water may be recommended in cases where the sound quality post exposure to sweat has been negatively impacted following a dehydration cycle. I haven't independently tested this yet, but will likely see if I can conduct some experiments in the future.

    Very informative as always Cliff! And I'm now convinced this was the cause of my microphone failure on my last set of STARKEYS! It's really a problem this time of the year with temperatures in the mid 90's and humidity near 100%! Not sure how to protect them in early season bowhunting, but perhaps just not wearing them on scouting missions and until I settle down on stand, leave them in their case.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      I really wanted to spread the word about dehydration this summer. This time of year is really tough on hearing aids, particularly in your neck of the woods!

  • @inesucrvenom
    @inesucrvenom 4 роки тому

    I hoped you'll share some example numbers what is the amount of moisture you found in aids that were just regularly worn, not being drowned in a cup or something. Ballpark?
    Also, based on ballpark, what you would say should be minimal frequency of visits to do deep dehumidification? Like twice a year or often, on average.
    Real numbers depend on climate, wearer and habits and lifestyle, of course, but I expect you did got some rule of thumb guides out of those months using redux?

    In refrigeration systems it is very important to dehydrate the interior of the system. We strive for less than 1,000 microns, which should assure complete moisture removal.

      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      What are the negative consequences if you don't with refrigeration systems?

    If the hearing aid is powered up,doesn’t the moisture short out the electronics and if it does how does the ReDux restore the hearing aid?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      Time is of the essence Laura. Once corrosion sets in, nothing can be done. This is why placing a wet hearing aid inside of a consumer dryer is risky compared to getting all the moisture out ASAP.

    • @lauraleekeating5355
      @lauraleekeating5355 4 роки тому

      Doctor Cliff, AuD I understand that it is important to remove moisture,but if the circuits get wet doesn’t short out the hearing aids?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      Not immediately usually. Just like when you drop a cell phone into water and it works for a day and the next day it is dead. That is because it constantly had the circuit running when it was wet. If moisture was removed immediately then the damage would be limited.

    • @lauraleekeating5355
      @lauraleekeating5355 4 роки тому

      I’m sorry to debate this issue but I am trying to convince my Beltone hearing specialists that the ReDux works.
      In your video you said that the hearing aid was restored to it’s original prescription without any electronic.is that the case?

    • @lauraleekeating5355
      @lauraleekeating5355 4 роки тому

      The Beltone hearing specialist insists that the hearing aid electronics would be damaged from the moisture and can not be made to work by using the ReDux.

    I am not sure if you can share, how significant of an investment would this be for a hearing care provider? It seems like it would be a great addition to any clinic. Personally, I would LOVE a consumer version of this...that could also be used for other household devices as well.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому +1

      I would say that it is affordable from a clinic perspective, but not cheap by any means. Personally, I believe the expense is well worth it considering it allows me to better service my patient's hearing aids. Not sure if/when we would get a consumer version of the Redux though.

      @@DrCliffAuD Do you actually have a Redux at your practice?? I have an Oticon OPN1 that is emitting 8 beeps 4 times in succession, indicating a mic issue. Possibly moisture.
      I wonder if it could be more moisture than my DryLux can remove.
      Do you accept mail in repairs??

    Looks like the only place that has Redux in my area is Verizon Wireless. I wonder if they'd do hearing aids? I'd love to see a home version of this if it's significantly better than dry aid type kits. Then maybe I could wear my hearing aid when I run, to hear the cars before they try to hit me. I sweat way too much to do it now though.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      I'm sure that the Verizon store would dehydrate your aids if you asked. I presume that you will eventually have some providers in your area who get the Redux system.

    Watching your latest, I had a quick notion. Riffing off your reaction to my particular circumstance with the Hearphones…and *your* notion that the first thing you'd do in my case is to take a REM *through* the Hearphones, in order to get results that are not just clinically accurate, but based on my perceptions and preferences…maybe THAT's the video idea. Your assertion that hearing aids could be programmed to my preference if I was *willing* to accept some degrees of occlusion effect (and I am!!!) changes the topic focus from "Some hearing loss sufferers want the wider bandwidth of a PSAP experience" to (and I'm paraphrasing your own point) "Some providers [even responsible ones] need to get more involved in solving the patient's problem with the patient's preferences and perceptions as a base"-particularly if there's significant prior, idiosyncratic experience that traditionally taken REM and fitting won't address as comprehensively. Since you HAVE that unique insight…I'd say share it.

      The Redux's purpose is to perform dehydration. Disinfecting hearing aids is done prior to dehydration.
