    I took an online hearing test, and then bought a fairly inexpensive pair of hearing aids. And honestly, for me, they were more frustrating than helpful. Friends and relatives very much recommended that I go to our local Beltone dealer for a full exam and fitting. I now wear Beltone Achieve hearing aids, and it stuns me how perfectly I hear now. The Audiologist is just a wizard in how he can tweak them perfectly. Surround sound, easy Bluetooth connectivity, a phone app, etc. Totally satisfied.

    I am going through the search now for hearing aids with some very specific needs. I appreciate what you’ve done to simplify how I need to approach it. I’ve listened to many of your video’s. Before beginning to listen to you I’ve tried at least 3 OTC hearing aids and also the EARGO which was okay but I could not get the device to stay in my canal despite cleaning my ear before each insert. Anyway, thank you and if we lived closer you’d have a customer. Best wishes.

    Thank you Dr. Cliff!! I attended a conference where you were speaking years ago and was hooked immediately! I often share your video's with my patient's at our non-profit Hearing clinic; we offer basic technology instruments to low income senior patients; your explanations are clear and understandable for the patient! This video in particular gives valuable verification of instrument levels and helps lend validation that they are receiving a good instrument with service that follows best practices. We THANK YOU for your honesty and superior knowledge!

Haven't really noticed a difference yet after 2 weeks..except for bluetooth options connected to phone. Still need to go back to Dr. These videos help me be better informed to ask Q of Dr. Thanks! 💕

    Thank you for your dedication and time I have hearing loss in the upper frequency range and work in a complex work environment. I have the Oticon Opn 3 bye and they restored language audibility. I have to agree with you on these features as I’ve watched and listened on my new ReSound aids that have both Bluetooth and recharge ability! I’m still learned the Smart 3D app and I’m not quite as up to speed as I was with my STARKEY Halo’s TruLink! Not sure which ReSound model COSTCO sells so I cannot verify with certainty that these are Lynx 3 or Lynx Quattro. And I’ve yet to customize the settings in a noisy restaurant yet so the jury’s still out. I do however still have issues listening to the radio in my convertible, so maybe sometime soon a new car with Bluetooth streaming! Keep up the great job you do of informing & educating the public on hearing features, benefits, cost and value! You Rock!

    I have just come across this channel here and you explain things very well for this simple mind here. I don’t have much hearing loss according to tests, however it always seems to be that if there is any kind of background noise that isn’t the person/object I’m trying to listen to, then I feel like I cannot hear a single thing. Hi Dr. Cliff, love your videos. A question I have is, whenever my audiologist changes settings to my hearing aids, he then puts me in the booth, with some sort of loop around my neck, and tells me to, and with hearing aids on, raise my hand when hearing the beep. Is this what you would call “Real hearing verification”?

    I found this video to be very helpful. It explained a lot, however it raised questions in my mind which, perhaps, you have previously answered and you or one of your followers can identify a URL with the answers.
    Is it possible to train a hearing aid via a program in the aid or in an accompanying cell phone rather than via repeated visits to a human audiologist in order to potentially reduce the cost of procuring and training the aid, 2) potentially apply real life sound environments, for example for noise reduction in the patient's house and working environment, and to adapt to changes in one's ears, and 3) to educate the user to better understand what the aid is doing for him or her. I know that a lot of people would screw this up, but some of us, given a good instruction manual, would maybe get it just right?

    Great job. Your videos have really helped me to understand the differences in hearing aids and in audiologist. I'm going to try and find someone that does REM here in the DFW area. Also, why are premium aids $8,000 or more?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  5 років тому +2

      Thanks Mr C. The cost for a clinic to acquire premium level aids can range between $2,000-$3,500 depending on the brand and size of the clinic. The amount they charge you includes the service you receive for a period of time. The ones that charge you $8k better provide you with top-notch care and for several years.

My specialist just went by what I said last time I was in there. I’m about to get new ones soon, so I will be making sure this service is done. Thank you
    And finally I have a question... Is there any type of connectivity technology that transmits the audio in surround sound from a device connected directly to the audio source? Eg; Watching a movie, have Dolby surround on, and have the ConnectLine transmit the data and my hearing aids are able to replicate that sound?

    Thanks Dr. Cliff. Thank you for good information. I was thinking about using the eargo. I loved the idea of the invisible with nothing hanging over my ear. I bough aids for 4K but lost one. Bought a replacement then lost it also. My problem was a habit I have of pushing my hair back over my ear. something i do without thinking. Also since the low er tones are what im missing. With these the amplification amplifies everything around me so trying to talk to one person or even to hear myself is impossible. Its just loud noise of everyone in room.. What would you suggest? i saw a doctor to be tested.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  5 років тому +2

      A low frequency hearing loss is the most difficult to treat. It requires closing off the ear canal to allow for low frequency gain. The Eargo is only an open fit and would not provide benefit in the LF range. There is a possibility that hearing devices may not work for you, but finding a good audiologist gives you a better shot!

    Cliff, I wonder if you could give me some advice. I have Audeo B 90 Direct hearing aids and I carry a concealed firearm. At the range, I obviously remove the hearing aids and use ear plugs. But what will happen to my hearing aids if I am forced to fire my 9MM weapon in self defense (no time to turn off or remove hearing aids)? Will they be destroyed? Or will they be able to deal with the extremely loud report?

    Hi, Dr. Cliff. I went in for a free check on the advice of a friend a couple of years ago, and the audiologist found me a couple of donors because I couldn't afford new ones. She set them up for me and they were okay, but on another visit she did the REM. The difference was amazing.
    They are Oticon Ino RITEs and as far as I can tell they're about ten years old.
    My friend's dad died a couple months ago and he gave me his old aids, which are Phonak Q70 312s. They are quite a bit newer, and I have to talk to my audiologist to see if she thinks I should use them and get her to set them up for me. Couldn't help sticking them in the way they are and going for a drive. With the Oticons I couldn't hear the radio with the window down. With these, I can!
    Do you think I should give back the Oticons and go with these?

    Doctor Cliff, My Insurance (MediCal) will only cover basic models . I need an ITE model as I wear oxygen as well as eyeglasses which both need to come off and on several times a day. My hearing loss is pretty flat at about -50db in the low frequencies to -60 above 4k. The audiologist (Audiologist is at University medical center and does REM) suggested either the Phonak VirtoV50 or the Opticon Alta. Both models will have a telecoil and I plan on buying an external streamer out of pocket. Which model do you think would work best for me?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  6 років тому +1

      The use of Audiogram Direct does not replace the need for REM. The intent of in-situ audiometry is to provide audiometric testing through a hearing device (ie. Thresholds). This is not intended to be used to provide a verified fitting which is what REM is designed for.

    • @jeanieparker
      @jeanieparker 5 років тому

      I would personally ask how much they charge for follow up appointments or adjustments. You will be looking for a company that offers an unlimited number, at no cost. This is called cost bundling. You might pay a bit more for your device, but unlimited follow ups and adjustments means that they are willing to work with you until you can get it set up just right for you. Also ask about warranty on devices, and if they charge you to send if off for servicing. In addition, the cost of consumables. Ask about the cost of batteries, domes and other consumables for your device. Then you know the ongoing costs. Best of luck. I hope that you have acted on your hearing loss, it is so important. Best of Luck.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  6 років тому +1

      Hi Marilyn. It really boils down to how complex your listening environments are and how important it is for you to hear in those environments. If you don't want to leave any benefit on the table, then you need to consider the top tier. If you are not in complex environments often, or it isn't critical that you hear your best in those environments, then you can get away with lower tiers of technology. A comprehensive review of your lifestyle should be considered to ensure you are recommended the correct level.

My audiologist thinks she can help the tinnitus with a masking sound and also amp up the loss of the high frequency pitch. Hi Casey, I presume you would be able to adjust the PA system better without using hearing aids. Can you tell me what is meant by "Frequency adjustment"? One franchise is wanting to charge more for a larger number of "frequency adjustments". The numbers of "frequency adjustment" go from 16 to 48. The difference in cost from 24 "Frequency adjustments" to 48 is approx. $1000. Another franchise is not explaining what that means when I ask (kind of evasive, in a way), and says they simply sell the best unit they have that is adjustable. No effort to sell me different levels at different prices, which I think I like better. But I can't find what "frequency adjustments" means in terms of those numbers I was given, to know if this is something I should consider. I have put off making a decision on my hearing center choice for a week, because I am frustrated about this. Any help?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому +1

      When talking about 24 and 48 adjustments, they are really talking about channels. Anything past 15 and the benefit for the cost diminishes quickly. However, there are also more adjustment handles with devices that have more channels. This allows for better customization to your prescriptive targets if they do REMs. If cost is a main concern, you could likely drop down a level on technology, but if you want to ensure max hearung benefit, the higher tech will ensure you get it.

    • @pyenme

      @@DrCliffAuD Thank you so much for your quick response!! I have made an appointment for the provider who did NOT offer more "frequency adjustments", based on your information. I’m looking for information on how long should you expect a hearing aid to last. If it cost me $5000 for the product and it only last 7 years, then I’m not interested in that product.

    I may say that I had more than once a patient that went from premium to basic technology! This can happen with very elderly patients that have moderate/ severe hearing loss and severe difficulties in background noise. Even the premium noise reduction features are not enough so they see more value in a "basic" rather than a "premium" hearing aid and describe them as "it's the same"! And as you always say doing REMs is extremely important.

    My dad needs hearing aids and we know nothing about hearing aids. I want a premium hearing aid for him but done know what would be the beginning price range of the premium vs mid grade. Where does “premium” price range start? I’m looking at 2,000.00$ as a price range but need to know if that’s mid or premium spectrum

      That is typically in the low tier range. However, I would focus on finding a provider who follows Best Practices before trying to find the best hearing aid.

      Hi LaVon. Hear.com does a lot of online advertising and gives exclusivity to hearing clinics in a particular zip code. It is on a first come first serve basis. The downside to this is that there is no vetting process to ensure that a particular practice provides high quality care. Hear.com is basically just a lead generator for clinics in their network.

      sam thompson, a hearing aid will work good for you if you have decent Word Recognition Scores and the hearing aids are programmed correctly using Real Ear Measurement. Otherwise they likely won't help much.

      @DrCliffAuD  5 років тому

      The lower the tech level, the less wind reduction capability they have. However, this is also a style issue. Devices behind the ear are more susceptible to wind that ones that go in your ear canal.

      Shadow Banned-I use a behind the ear aid and recently got a higher technology aid. It definitely is better in the wind than the more basic aid. I have never used an in the ear model so I can’t make that comparison. Hope this helps!! Good luck to you!!

      Simply got to ask Ruten45. Many providers do not provide it standard, but will do it if you demand it and they have the equipment. If they don't have the equipment, pay someone who does to adjust the devices.

      The microphones are directional. They are designed to prioritize sounds originating in front of you. If you are not experiencing that, your aids are setup incorrectly.

    Thank you for the information. But I have to ask: Why so expensive?? The technology of hearing aids is no more sophisticated than a smartphone. The components are not more expensive. Still it is much more expensive. Why? maybe hearing-aid companies find a way to get rich on the aging population?

    Mostly, it's about closing the deal. When your prescription indicates low to moderate hearing loss and you're on the fence, as to whether you want a device or not, your Audiologist becomes a salesman. The devices, which were best for you, a moment ago, are no longer emphasized and the cheaper units are pulled out of the bottom drawer. You are downgraded from an 18 channel, $5,000 unit to a 6 channel $2,200 unit, for the sake of the transaction.

    What about all the hearing aids on the market today that DO NO require you to spend thousands of dollars. There are dozens of them on the market that cost only a couple of hundred dollars. Facebook is full of their advertisements. They all look relatively the same. They will fit inside your ear canal and are not noticeable for the most part. All the ones I've seen even come with a guarantee. If they don't work for you then you can send them back for a refund. Nano is one of many for example. Have you tested any of these hearing aids? From what I know, Congress made it possible to get these hearing aids so consumers wouldn't have to spend thousands of dollars for them. I personally have spend around $6000 on a pair of hearing aids from an audiologist I went to and despite all the testing and going back for adjustments countless times, I'm not much better off than I was before I purchased them. I have moderate to severe hearing loss. This is what I've learned while using hearing aids: Being able to hear in a noisy environment will be difficult at best, no matter how many settings you have. There are going to be situations where you won't be able to understand what someone is saying to you. You'll hear them but not understand what is being said, big difference. I could go on but the point I'm making is that if you have moderate to severe hearing loss like me, you are NOT going to hear like you did before your hearing loss, period. I don't care what you audiologist says. Remember they are in business to sell you a hearing aid.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 роки тому

      Hey Darrell. Thanks for your questions and comments. I do have a few videos about Nano's hearing aids and marketing tactics. Here are the links: ua-cam.com/video/pk6bVHpeXk8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ZoV2j5E8cVU/v-deo.html . Check out Nano's Better Business Bureau (BBB) page and you will see that they do everything in their power NOT to refund your money when their devices either don't work for you or don't work at all. I can say based off of testing that you will not get benefit with Nano devices if you truly have a Moderate to Severe Sensorineural hearing loss.
      In regards to your performance with hearing aids, performance outcomes are almost always predictable no matter what the hearing loss. It all depends on if your hearing loss was measured correctly, the right devices were selected, and if those devices have been programmed correctly to your hearing loss prescription following best practices.
      The OTC hearing aid act has not gone into effect yet. There is technically no such thing as an OTC hearing aid until the FDA defines this category of devices later this year. You can buy these cheap amplifiers and other hearing aids all you want with little to no regulation which is why I believe Nano is still in business.

    This may sound crazy but I am in my mid 30's and I really missed hearing aides from ages 2001 through 2009 and I NOT IMPRESS WITH ANY NEW TECHNOLOGY HEARING AIDES!!!!! IT'S GETTING WORSE THAN THEY ARE AND THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!They cause vertigo, upset stomachs, massive headaches and confusion. They are SO awful and sounds are NOT normal or clear as it has been years ago. Just sad because they can not make the hearing aides that suits me for my profound deafness. Cochlea Implant is also a joke and from all the experiences from few friends of mine had to give up on those also.
