I will tell you this... I have a 10 year old Easter Hermanns Tortoise and he is seriously mind boggling HILARIOUS! I got him when he was 3 years old, and it took awhile for me to realize just how friendly, sometimes clingy, often times tired in the winter, his need to only poop or pee in water (Or they will pee DIRECTLY on you), his bizarre diet (oh yes, they are picky little rascals who would rather starve then eat something they deem gross). LOL. Now this was after having a Box Turtle for 20 years (He died in my arms...) Anyway, they are great for beginners.
Who is the easiest for first timers... I got confused by your awesome experience. Who is for beginners...Box turtles or Easter Hermanns Tortoise? Thank you so much.
We just adopted a captive bred Hermanns Tortoise. He's the sweetest little nugget ever. We have watched almost every one of your videos and they have been the single best guide we could have asked for. We do have one question, that isn't answered in any of our books or on any of your videos: Is it normal for him to bury himself at night? He has a hallowed out half log hutch to burrow into, and sometimes he does, but twice now we thought the kids had taken him out and instead he'd buried himself in one spot or another.
This is probably an odd question, but is there a good type of large tortoise for a retirement home? At this retirement home that my mother works at and that I volunteer at there are a lot of box turtles that live out in the court yards, but the residents don't always get to see them, so once I suggested the idea to the lady that's in charge of flora and fauna out there she asked me to make a list of what kind of tortoises would be best. I can really only think of yellow footed and sulcata, but is there any other that you could suggest or know anyone that can't take care of a tortoise that could be adopted?
Sulcata, Aldabra, Leopard Tortoises are about the size of a basketball. Aldabras can be expensive but yeah, there aren't many I can think of... look up a list
Albino Tortoise I hope so too, we're going to soon have our annual "Running of the turtles" party out there in a couple of weeks, so we do some stuff out there already.
thank you for shipping the Red Foot tortoise to clint. Yesterday when my daughter opened the box she saw that the tortoise had watery eyes. P.S. my daughter is a fan of yours and noticed that the tortoise is a girl right?
Oh these are just beautiful 💚 🐢 Thank you for mentioning to not buy imported animals, not only the animals have very low chance of surviving in captivity but also by buying these animals we support poaching and extinction of these species in their natural habitat which is so sad.. I would love to see these tiny species in their natural habitat though :) 🐢
Great video. What breed would you recomend for someone living in the northeast? It seems like these guys like a warmer environment. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Great video thanks for the tips. Quick question, what do you think would be the best option for a young kids first pet at small Tortoise like the ones in this video or a small turtle? And what would be some turtle recommendations? Thanks so much and keep up the good work!!
+JoeDaddy40 May get boring. I take care of my schools Russian tort who came from some little kid who got bored of it and gave it to the school. (It came in fairly bad shape...)
Can you please do a short video on how to set up an enclosure for baby tortoises? By the way, I love your channel so much. Stayed up till 2 a.m to watch it. *****
I just got 4 Greek Golden (spurred thigh) tortoises, and I am crazy about them! Shelly, Sheldon, Little Sheila, and Shorty. Shelly is shy, Sheldon is super outgoing and curious, and Little Sheila and Shorty mostly just want to eat. I live in central Israel, and they are super happy here.
It is awesome when UA-cam recommends a video that truly speaks out to me personally. I am considering on getting either a turtle or tortoise. I am working really hard to set-up an outdoors enclosure for my future turtle/tortoise son. Therefore, this video came up on my recommendation just in epic time. 😎👍 Yeah, my budget for a turtle or tortoise is small unfortunately. 😥I could $30 to $80, but no higher than that. I have a nice enclosure, that is in the works of being enriched and I live in South Florida so one will live happily.
thanks, bro, I love the star tortoise, they got great personality, I got 2 yr star male, just one week back got 2 baby star 3 months old, great experience 👍
Because importing tortoises is a lot more difficult and we don't have as many breeders as the states. There are two that work with multiple breeders across Canada: c&c tortoises and slow&steadytortoises. P.s. I'm getting a Greek tortoise soon. 😁
Hi Kenan, I'm thinking of getting either a marginated or Hermann's tortoise for my enclosed outdoor atrium at my house (10 ft x 10 ft) with plenty of vegetation as well open space for sunlight. My question though is in regards to when you say that it's okay to keep these tortoises outside during the colder months as they will hibernate, how long is a short time? I live in the southeast as well in Charleston, S.C. so while it doesn't normally get below freezing in the winter here, it does happen from time to time. I wanted to make sure if it's okay in this part of the southeast to have a hibernating tortoise outdoors before I buy one ,as the last thing I would ever want to do is harm or kill a tortoise!
I am deciding between a lizard or a tortoise. If I get the tortoise I live in a hot place in the summer(Ky) but in the winter it can get cold. Can you keep them in the house during the winter and just let them roam around the house?
Dude you are awesome I love you passion for reptiles and you have inspired me to get a baby red eared slider but I need to convince my dad. But I love your work dude
Great, informative video! Ive been thinking about getting a small tortoise and this was very helpful. do they really need a 8X4 enclosure for one i they are in the small side? when do they reach their maximum size? for now i wanted to do about size of aquarium, approximate size of ones shown in our baby tortoise care vid. (i know actual aquarium not great, will prob build one).
We live in Seattle and my sister wants to get a hermann's tortoise. You mentioned how they do in various places on the East Coast, but how would they do in our mild climate? Maybe they could only be outside in summer?
Is there a tortoise that could be a mostly inside tortoise? I live in the central thumb of Michigan, so it gets really cold in the winter, but the house temp ranges from 70 to 80 degrees roughly.
How did you come up with Kamp Kenan? Please answer would love to know.. maybe you can do a video about how you started your rescuing animals and the Kamp Kenan?
I just rescued a homes hingeback tortoise from someone who was keeping her in about an inch and a half of water without a heat lamp or a UVB. I bought it off of the person for $15 because I told him that I might be spending hundreds on vet bills. Do you have any experience with hingebacks?
can you give more care and fact information on the black/brown burmese tortoise please ! I have one coming and am overwhelmed by not knowing as much as i what about basic overall care especially about lighting !
I’ve owned my turtles that where rescues for 6 years!!! It’s my dream to own a tortoise one day I’ve wanted one since I was a little girl!! Lol I even have my porch my WHOLE PORCH set up for one with the natural sun light😂😂😂 lol I’ll own one one day
I live in Texas. Can you recommend a place I could get a Hermanns tortoise. I have always loved these animals but never knew I could have one as a pet.
My hermanns tortoise has lost its upper beak when it was just a 4 cm baby, now its around 7cm and it can't chew on dry tortoise pellets, do you think i should take my hermanns to a vet? (Sorry for bad english)
Our videos are spoof 1-3 minute videos on The Tortoise Network. Kamp Kenan's videos have the best information on care you will find anywhere .I have learned so much from his videos and as A fellow Bmxer he seems like A cool dude lol.100% recommend his stuff.
+Kamp Kenan Your videos are well worth the endorsement. I met you briefly at the Orlando Repticon A few weeks back.Your videos helped me A lot and I am still learning.

What would you recommend me? I also want one that doesn't have too complicated of a diet, meaning one that could live mostly off store bought pellet food if possible
Good afternoon. My son is extremely interested in tortoises and really wants one as a pet. We are in Central Florida and would love to purchase one from you. A smaller breed is best for us! Can we please have a price list for your tortoises. Thank you !
i have 3 Hermanns tortoises.one is 5 and is pretty small, one is one is 8 and is probably around average size and one is 11 and she is huuuuge!!! weighs a ton lol around 2.5kg. love her to bits but a nightmare to transport with the other two haha
I’m looking into tortoise as a new friend/pet. Lookin for a species that I can take outside and let roam a fenced in yard. I live in Indiana so don’t want one too awfully big but do want a tortoise that get’s pretty big.
hello, what is the rubber made tub for? Will any of those three tortoise be happy living in there? Please let me know. I would love to have tortoise join my family
hi kenan, im 15 and have wanted to get into the reptile hobby, i would like to start out with a tortoise due to the fact that my mom is scared or lizards and snakes and won't let me get one, i live in Arizona and would like you help on choosing a good beginner tortoise.
Sorry, I would try to help but I only really know about lizards. If you want a lizard I recommend a leopard gecko. They stay relatively small (max 8-10 inches) and aren't scaly. They are also cute and super easy to care for. Just do your research.
Roxanne Santori Just saw one of those tortoises in a store. Fell in love.
