  • What's up skate fam??? Welcome to Deez Skates!
    In this episode I'm going to address a serious issue that a lot of people complain to me about. That issue is the fact that the Inline Skate Sizing system is BROKEN!
    I'm not picking on any one company. All the inline companies are guilty of this bad habit, but if you watch the whole video you will find out the one company that seems to be making an effort to do better!

      I’ve got sets of powerslide imperial 80s, imperial megacruiser, next, swell and kaze... all fit differently... I’m size uk 10, the imperials are 10-11 so are roomy... next are 9-10 so breaking in the plastic and liners can be saw and lengthy depending on how long you skate. Using a heat gun safely and carefully on the boot helps, put your skates on tight and heat up the pinch points and lean that part of your foot into it and repeat as necessary over a few weeks. Heat mould the liners a couple times and they’re almost perfect... kaze and swells are pretty much the same body with slight differences. Both are size uk 10, the swell was four hours of breaking in time, now they’re like slippers! Kaze have a taller cuff height feeling to me and feel a bit stiffer but still sweet...

      Thank you for this video, it is ridiculous that the size charts are length only and not the width, It makes it stupidly hard to find skates that I want to buy because I'm too scared they wont fit. The link sadly doesn't work for me but I had a look on the website and under 'Explore' then 'Skate gear guide' and scroll down about half way there is a 'width size chart' not the best but they do recommend some skates that go with the width. Hope this helps peeps that see this vid after me

      @itsmedansee I can relate…I got the Imperial LOLLIPOPS and they fit okay but the ankle bolt kept rubbing my ankle bone causing a sore. Then tried the Zetrablades because I heard they work for wider feet and I could hardly get one of them on…then got the FR FRX and again couldn’t even get my feet down in them even though I wear a ten/men’s 9 26.5 length. Still trying to find a comfy pair….

    Really great points here. This is an issue we've been trying to solve for years. Honestly, with the losses we make on returned skates and size-exchanges we could allocate a SUBSTANTIAL budget to trying to solve this. However, without the complete last/mould information being released by the manufacturer I can't think of a way to solve this. Unfortunately, the sketch at the beginning was all too familiar!

    Honestly the best way to improve sizing would just be if there were actual inline skate stores in more places so people could try a bunch on before buying them rather than having to worry about the intricacies of the sizing system. For other things like ski boots or running shoes (or even bikes) the standard advice is "don't order them online without trying them on, go to a store" but that's just not possible for inline skates because there aren't stores in most places.

    All valid points but the industry just isn't strong enough to make molds for every size & 1/2 size nor is it strong enough for someone to own & operate a physical brick n mortar shop. Single shell & to accommodate 4 sizes & dial it in with these neoprene dual fit liners. Sizing caters to the majority which seems to be folks with pixie feet & I'm not one of them. It's basically a liner-centric industry. Manufacturers give you a shell & leave it to you to figure out whether you need a slim liner or a plush liner to fill in the blank. Far from ideal but until the industry gets strong enough to where it was in the 90's where there was a mold for every size & 1/2 size, this is what we're tasked with.

Need more half sizes, need better liners, need more info on widths, on toe box, need information on how many mm a liner is going to break in. Need education on measuring feet on every shop website. Need the classification system you mentioned. Need advice on how snug a skate should feel and where. Need add ons available for skates to fit better like targeted insoles. Anything short is dishonest or lazy, and will turn people away from buying skates. Thank you for making this. Was just reading on reddit some people complaining about this exact topic. Other related issues:
    -There are very few locations for inline skate shops where you can try on in person
    -Every expert online tells you to get very tight skates, to the point where they hurt your feet. If so, how do you know if they fit properly?
    -For skates with liners, the liner can greatly affect the fit and feel
    -Skates don't seem to allow for various arch configurations. I have very high arches. Everyone loves Seba/FRs, but my high arches had the tops of my feet bulging through the laces on those skates (in not a good way)

  • @maloneycraig

    most ski boots now come in three different “volumes”, Low middle high, like hockey skates. But the problem is “volume” bundles together width in the toe box, width by the navicular, width in the arch, instep height etc. So you’re STILL expected to have the plastic shell physically altered by the boot fitter after you purchase. Not to mention everybody has a different profile by the toes.
    Feet are super diverse. I think the only answer is for inline skating inside to get serious like ski boots and have an expectation that the shop will physically alter the boot after purchase. But the problem is that inline skating is not as popular as skiing, so you can’t really have dedicated boot fitters. Unless the ski shops want to do it.

    Dude thank you so much for putting this together! I thought about doing something like this since I feel like I am always talking about skate widths on my reviews. Length is such a limiting unit of measure to purchase skate that you have not tried on. Imagine if that's how you had to buy pants, just on length not the waist dimensions. Props to you, the industry needs to be called out on this. I would love to see some sort of industry standard for size/shape ratings.

    I keep getting Rollerblade recommendation videos every few weeks.
    They spend so much money on "this year's boot color". "Attracting skiers". "PR Vans".
    But somehow they can't get out one guy, with one tape measure.
    Literally just scribble down the length, width and circumference of this year's boots and liners. It's not even a days worth of work.
    It would, no joke, increase sales significantly and save skate shops an arse-ton of money on returns.

    A lot of the people running the business are either clueless or lazy or a combination of those two. Is the sport so marginal that it's more like a side gig which isn't worth all the time and effort? They've had so many years to up their standards, yet you need an active, knowledgeable shop worker to test, measure and study the products so that customers can tell what's made of what material, how the sizing is, what they weigh etc. It doesn't help the situation that lots of shops skip this part and some shops look like they haven't updated their site since 2013. Some listings have absolutely zero information and the stock data isn't up to date. Maybe they don't know their own products because everything comes from some guy in China? I've been baffled for a long time watching this go on. Like, whats the deal - do they want to sell the stuff or not? Not everyone wants to spend a week on reddit to put together all the info to figure out what they're buying or swap the skates three times to find out they just aren't the right shape.
    TL;DR inline skate business is still in its infancy in 2023.
    Some of my own shopping/quality experiences:
    - Bought a pair of skates (Swells) and found out they tear the skin on the top of my malleolus on both ankles extremely quickly. Ankle footies made it tolerable but there wasn't really space for those so it felt akward and I had to send the skates back. It cost about 130€ to try skates (due to the visible wear on the wheels) and 20€ for the footies.
    - Bought two skates in the wrong size because the shop info was the typical shoe size and size up crap. No shops in my country were selling these models so there was no way to test 'em. About 700€ spent on these.
    (Wasn't allowed to cancel my order on the first pair because the factory had already made and sent the skates to the shop. This wasn't a custom model (Seba FR1) and the shop claimed to have this in stock when the order was placed.)
    - Bought a pair Powerslide skates for my sister but half of the bearings didn't spin because they were full of rust. To be fair, it was an open box product and I did get a refund to match the worth of new bearings.
    - Bought another pair of Swells because the price was low, close to the frames & wheels set on their own. Gave the boots away and kept the Megacruiser Pro frames. Both frames were right side frames and it was impossible to reach the bolts on the left while wearing the skates. Hubs on the 125mm wheels were too loose and the bearings kept clicking in and out so you got anywhere from 1-3 clicks during every push. The assymetric Seba 310 frame turned out to be more rigid so this one ended up collecting dust on the shelf.
    So, spending roughly 1100€ on the higher tier stuff (not counting the vast amount wheels, bearings, tools etc.) got me 6 years of skating with the wrong size skates and I'm still in the hunt for the "dream setup".

    I’ve blown so much money because of this. My feet are wider than wide, it would have been much more useful to have the skate shop say “maybe consider doing something else, there aren’t any affordable inlines that will fit you”, but instead I got the exact line you joked about and they sold me a size up. Lately I’ve been skateboarding much more since my feet don’t hurt at all, would have been nice to have the shop steer me in that direction, especially since they sell those too.

Next I bought full carbon Wizard skates for $1200 in 41 and they felt like tanks. • @Thomas_de_Meijer

    I think the difference is most inline skates are injection molded, so manufacturers are locked in to providing a limited range, compared to carbon. Also, a lot of inline companies were and are quite amateur. No excuse for Roces though!

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  2 роки тому +3

      That is true. I just think there could be more transparency. It should be easier to disclose the dimensions because they are pre made injection molds. Many carbon skates are the same. For the longest time, it was impossible to find out the difference between the HC Evo and the Tau.. which are both expensive carbon slalom boots. You will still be hard pressed to find that info about any of the Seba Carbon skates or the FR Spin for example.

    Most shops error on the side of too big when helping beginner skater pick skates. A smaller uncomfortable skate is more likely be returned. Both length and width are important, but my opinion volume of the skate a better indication of fit. Plastic injection shells generally have 10 mm of extra length on the inside compared to the mondo size of skate. Because of the cost of plastic injection molds, manufacturers use same shell for two full sizes. Having a liner that can fill the volume is what makes for a better fit.

  • @GOLDCOASTROLLOUT
    @GOLDCOASTROLLOUT 2 роки тому +3

    This sizing issue is such a problem, so many people I know have had to return skates. A piece of advice I give is that ill-sized skates are never going to get better, you will never break them in, if they hurt from the get-go the only improvement will be if your foot changes shape! It's very weird how width is not a consideration given how many people have this very issue.
    A problem with inline & roller skates which I guess is a problem with shoes and clothing too but, focusing on skates is this... The use of different sizing standards even just for length. Size 9, is that US men's US women's or UK men's, how does that relate to boots sold under Euro sizes or whether they are sold according to a centimetre length, then there are manufacturers who invent their own sizing standard, so you are then having to try and translate that to a conventional sizing, it makes buying skates over the internet so difficult, because you'll just be on a website where you are just showing maybe a drop-down list of sizes without knowing for certain what standard that size 9 and the list is referring to unless you then go and do research somewhere, usually it means you have to phone the shop to be sure. And even your skate shop will have difficulty because if you ring up saying you are a US men's such-and-such, and this skate you're enquiring about is sold according to UK sizing, well they are having to try and translate between two standards and something can get lost in the translation, regardless of whether that particular manufacturer oversizes for that measurement as every manufacturer's "last" is different in how it accommodates a length, just like a woman's size 10 dress will vary according to any manufacturer and how they interpret size 10 in their cut.
    Finally there is that other bug bear of manufacturers putting out different sizes where the boot is the identical length between two sizes but the inside liner is thicker or thinner.
    I remember the time I sent outlines of my feet with millimetre measurements to a skate shop, and the skates I got did fit fine. But in the slalom skating that I do, I like a very snug fit so the boot becomes an extension of the foot, and when I got my next skates I tried going a half size smaller and found that to be the perfect size for me. In other words the professionals in a shop with a great reputation couldn't get it right even with an outline of my feet and millimetre measurements. So what I'm saying is you unfortunately even today in 2022 have to go and physically try that brand of skates on, and that model, in that size. Ideally when you find the perfect size and model you should just consider sticking to that whenever you buy subsequent skates, unless you go through the same bs again and physically try on a different brand and model and size.

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  2 роки тому +2

      Well said! I find the best method for me when picking size is to try and stick to standard EU sizes, or Mondo if available, but of course that only really works if you already know the model you want is shaped well for your foot. I agree. Once I find a model that works well for me, I try to stick with it to avoid the headache and wasted money. Heat molding can help a bit.. but it can never make medium width skates for a wide foot properly or vice versa. It's only good if you already have the correct size and shape and need adjustment.

    I have a fairly new pair of Bauer Vapor hockey skates and went to the UK's biggest ice and inline skating store - they have one of the Bauer "Volumental" 3D Scan machines to get a 3D model of your foot and give you sizing info for Bauer ice skates. They also helped me find a pair of Mission inlines using the same scan; I figured Mission, also being Bauer, would kinda work similarly but, yeah, would be scared to branch out into other models and go for urban skates given the sizing dramas. I have pretty wide feet but even my scan got confused, recommending a EE (wide) on the old Bauer fit system and Fit 2 (mid) on the new fit system. Pretty fascinating to see all the info from the machine. Dunno if inline skate companies could start doing similar with actual foot scanning.

    Wide feet go for Seba/FR or rb cruiser . Small feet/average? go for powerslide / rollerblade twister. Always go true to size or downsize NEVER upsize. If you have to upsize...it means the skate is just not the right skate for you.

      Solid input. I find this to be generally true myself. Though I will say one of the skaters in this video skated a set of Twisters with pain for a couple of years before discovering that the PS HC Evo was a perfect fit. So general charts are never perfect.

    Just bought some new skates , it’s got a hard boot. They’re not wide enough for my feet now the customer support isn’t responding to my emails so I can exchange them. I really wish all companies could just make a wide skate and you just buy a liner based on your foot.

    inside ankle killed me when i first got flying eagle f6... $200. I ended up buying these footies that have like a gel cushion to remedy. Honestly i can't even tie my rollerblades tight... as soon as i put them on they are as snug as can be. I ordered acording to their sizing chart and that's what I ended up with. Still blade with them but having a width parameter would have saved me weeks of recovery from the blisters. Now my ankles have callouses and they're manly ankles. that's all i got to say about that.

      @@Quartered_Rodent huge improvement. New liner is allot stiffer and I feel stuffier in my skate. I tried footies like yours and they didnt really work, the liner was the only permanent solution.
      Alternatively, try doing a bit more raise in your sole or heel. THe shock absorbers in my liners lifted my heels a little more than the last ones and that seemed to marry the front of my ankle and shin with the tongue more more ergonomically.

    This is a good take on a popular issue within this industry. I hope it makes a change to the approach of shop owners and manufacturers.
    For example, I bought the Powerslide Next, but despite being "within range" ( my 256 vs the shells 256-261 listing), the extra 5cm is very problematic for me. I have a narrow foot with an high arch, thus the skate has serious pressure points near the ankle and my foot slops around the boot. How can a shell/liner appropriately fit a 5cm difference?
    I got the Evo's to eliminate that issue. I like PS as a brand and see their longevity, and their PDFs actually are helpful once you can find them.

    Preach! Since you did the video, Standard has done a decent job at sizing by releasing printouts of the footbed to get an idea. Though I really wish we had something more like what you showed with quads. I give Powerslide credit for giving attention to this issue, but it's negated by how subjective they approach it. All their marketing copy is identical, every product they make it the best thing ever and fits everyone with maybe a small difference in a dimension or two. I want something objective.

    I just got hosed buying a skate based on my foot length that I discovered after skating in too long to return don't fit me. Way too many pressure points. Now I've got to sell them at a huge discount because they're used even though they're basically brand new without a scratch on them. Not pleased. I have the same thoughts about sizing in the inline skate industry. You almost always have to buy online and it's a total crap shoot. Lots of time and money gets wasted through this chaos.

    Thanks for this video. There is no sizing system because skaters don't care. Not only skates but virtually all footwear accommodate a very small percentage of foot shapes. I have been looking for a set of skates and am very disappointed at the lack of engineering progress. Artwork collaborations, Fashion, New pastel anatomical colors. No changes in fit or function. It is embarrassing. I believe I have proven that consumers of inline and roller skates are a subspecies easily herded to feed from a rusty trough. I have not found a skate shop that responds to email. Nobody in the skate world knows how to measure or understand dimensions. The lowest rung in sports and outdoor activity, skaters. Why bother?

    Then I wanted to try out aggressive skating so I got a CJ2 inline skate which has to be a bit bigger so I got with for US10.5.
    I tried both of them in a store so everything has no problem.
    After that, I decided to try an FR UFR Street AP Inline Skate Boot so I ordered online with size US10.5.
    I picked it up from the store and tried it at home, only to find out it was so tight that feels like I'm putting on a US9.5 boot 😅
    Called the store to exchange for a bigger size and turned out I need one with size US11.5 to feel better for my toes to fit in comfortably. 🙃

      I can't recommend sizing for your feet specifically, but from my experience as someone with a medium ball and slightly narrow heel, I find FR Skates and Seba to be quite wide on me. I can still wear them, but the models I own are definitely for a leisurely trail skate and I can't get the same performance I get from my Powerslide HC Evos because the Sebas are not snug enough on me. I would look at forums and search around the web to see what people who have wide feet prefer. Hope that helps. Thanks for the support!

    Apart from those 2 i rarely look at other skates. Still bot a pair of roces but my m12's are 22 years old now so those don't really count lol.

      TBH, this sounds more like a symptom of not loosening the laces properly before removal. If a skate fits correctly, you should be significantly loosening the laces at least 50% of the way down. If not more. This is a standard expectation for every type of skate I’ve ever used.

    • @LadyBovine
      @LadyBovine 11 місяців тому +1

      You probably could. They're really all different. Most powerslides and FRs dont fit my feet at all (although they're supposedly narrow and wide fit, respectively), and are pain factories, whereas fila hardboots I've tried, rollerblade fusions/blanks (wide) and even classic rollerblade twisters (considered narrow) fit my foot shape really well. Foot shape is so important with hard shell skates, but you can actually be properly comfortable in a snug fitting skate if it's shaped right.

The best advice I could give is to find some rollerblading/inline skating groups on Facebook like “Rollerblading Rollerblading” or “Big Wheel Blading” and ask around in the group. People who skate a lot will have at least an idea of how to get you to the right brand based on information you share about your feet and what you typically wear. If you’re in the states, you can buy from inline warehouse and get free return shipping. That will help you get the right size without paying a ton in shipping if they don’t fit the first try.
