Now that I'm in my mid 40s a definitely couldn't imagine going back to these CRT TVs regardless of what some hipster kid in his early twenties is trying to tech lecture me on retro buying one. Depends on the head set. Quest 2 has motion retina clarity, with it's sub 1ms motion persistence. The best a PSVR2 can do is 2ms(Not headmovent blur-free, but close) when you plunk the VR brightness slider down to '0'...But then you've got a super bleak dim image. The PSVR2 drives me crazy with it's frenel lenses and the fact that it's OLED display trades motion clarity for brightness. :P

However, you're right, it's still a risk business wise but they can pull it off. Also, that's going to be only gamer exclusive. Because I imagine they won't be making 65 inch crt to replace an OLED lol. But if Sony somehow advertised it good enough they can sell it.

To be clear, this TV can only display 1080i/540p signals. Any signal that is not 1080i/540p will either be upscaled or downscaled to fit the image. The only kind-of exception is 480p, which is close enough to 540p for the TV to display natively with a little zooming.

As someone who grew up with nothing but non HDMI CRTs until 2014 I will say that no matter how well calibrated it is, a camera cannot do a CRT justice. It’s just so different in person.
Honestly I hope someone starts recycling old CRTs that are on their last leg/broken into smaller(maybe 10-20 inches) 4;3 and 16;9 HDMI CRTs for people who like the low response times or are enthusiasts.

This is actually super cool, and I liked that Rich explained what some of this technology actually is like, how it works, and what the experience plays like. I didn’t know much about CRT, I had heard about it, but didn’t really know the ins and outs. It looks pretty neat and would be a cool vintage TV. I enjoyed seeing some of the games on this and the review. They look pretty cool. Also, happy to see Carlos the chicken 🐓.

My first HDTV was Samsung 37" (I believe) flat screen CRT (not a flat panel, but a flat faced CRT), 4:3 set that I got right not too longer after the OG Xbox came out. It displayed 1080i and 720p. Component (and lower) inputs. It looked amazing but weighed a TON. I don't recall what I paid for it, but it wasn't cheap. Flat panel TVs were just coming on the market but were far, far more expensive for less impressive specs (IIRC). I loved this TV - it was a huge upgrade from my ~27" Panasonic that I'd bought some years earlier college. A few years later when I was moving to a small apartment in NYC, I decided to get a flat panel. I sold the CRT set to a neighbor right and was glad I did (did I mention it weighed a ton?). I ended up with a Samsung 37" 1080p panel that I still have in our guest bedroom.

Great Video. The TLDR for CRTs for modern game systems is 16:10 for PC with 24" (20" in 4:3 with supported games) or a TV CRT of at least 24 inches is needed IF your game preference has long distance combat or seeing things far away.
I own 20"- 4:3 1920x1440p which is really sharp but of course not the same as a flat 1440p screen and the problem here is that most games support 16:9/ and 10, 21:9 and wider but no 4:3 even when it is strait a horizontally smaller window with UI being calculated by percentage (when devs arent lazy) and menus 16:9 with black bars on top and bottom. You can barely see enemies in Call of Duty BR, Stalker Anomaly is harder due to every UI being squished to be properly sized in 16:9 due to being an old game and so on. If you get a game with proper 4:3 support the scale can look true to life as tested in Phasmophobia 4:3 vs VR but here the game isnt properly scalled so that the journal and white boards just hurt same as camera.
If you own a DLSS 2.0 capable card just dont care about CRTs when money is a concern. Quirks can happen like strange flickering or light / synchronization shift due to aging parts. If you pay more than 500€ it is really questionable. 300€ for a PC monitor or one-and-only retro TV maybe. In certain parts of EU you get free 16:9 and 4:3 sets and sometimes cheap professional sets. The true problem is how much space do you loose if you really only get a 4:3 TV and what disadvantages outweigh the positives.

And when I tested it out with Kirby and the forgotten land, the response time is incredible and the colors are vibrant, even though the VGA to RGBs converter I'm using isn't of the highest quality. Both of those games supported 16:9 aspect ratio using component connection. Correction on input lag: it depends on resolution.
These TV's skip image processing for 1080i signals, since that's their native scan rate, so you get zero lag.
If you use any other resolution, like 720p, 480p, and especially 480i, then you will have 2-4 frames of lag. Because all those resolutions will be converter to 1080i (or centered into 540p and stretched, in the case of 480p)
