You can raw glaze with dipping glazes. Simon Leach does it all the time. You may need to adjust the glaze to increase shrinkage eg with bentonite and test your glazes but it is entirely possible as long as it is done in two stages allowing them to dry in between. A LOT quicker, no streaks, more even and less risky than painting on 2+ glaze coats. Check out the numerous videos from Simon on the subject.

We have been raw glazing in a gas kiln for over a year now. Some crazing seems to occur on really smooth clay bodies and some glazes just don't like it at all. But over all, we like the results !

Hi Jane!! I have been hand building and raw glazing in my apartment during lockdown. I've made sure the glazes and clay are compatible and dried my pieces for weeks before adding under glazes and then again before putting clear glazes on.
I'm now set to take my pieces to a kiln but finding issues finding one that will take raw glazed pieces. Do you have any advice for finding a kiln or how to talk to the technicians?
Thanks so much in advance - I love your videos btw, they're so helpful and easy to watch ❤️

ANY kiln will take raw glazed stuff it wont make any difference to the kiln - so choose whichever kiln you like 😍

Hi Lauren, I have been doing the same but using stroke and coat brand which is underglaze + glaze at once! One firing and it’s done 😊 no problem with firing service so far. I would like to move to underglaze and glaze from Amaco but I’m not sure I can do both on my green ware… may I ask which brand are you using ?

Hi, question, if I wanted a non glossy finish would I just apply one coat of brushing glaze? I am working on a series of masks and the last one turned out too reflective. I've just put video about it, if you are interested, Cheers

You are awesome Jane, thank you!
I would like to ask you, can I apply underglaze on bone dry clay? Or it is safer to apply it on lather hard clay.
Thank you in advance for your help!😊

If the clay is bone dry it might crack it depending on the thickness… better to apply to leather hard. 👍🏼

Hi Jane do you mix your own transparent glaze or buy a specific one? I want to try raw glazing with a non leaded glaze.

You can raw glaze using any brush on glaze and layer up different glazes too - as long as they all melt at around the same temp you can play with this!

Do you need to fire the raw glazed pots separately from other green ware or can you fire it together? Also this may be silly but can you do this with cone 6 clay and glaze?

I am confused about the inside glazing or slip application. Do you just use glaze or do you use slip & glaze on the interior?

You can raw glaze to any temp - determined by the melting point of the glaze... try it! 👍🏼

I use two different clays mainly - a standard Potclays terracotta and also a basic buff clay. 😁
