  • 1974 Chevrolet Chevelle vs 1957 Ford Custom 300 Supercharged (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race)
TWO AWESOME CARS! Both VERY unique. First, we have a 1974 Chevrolet Chevelle 454... yes, a 454. Sure it only has a 8.25:1 compression ratio, but 270 net horsepower isn't anything to laugh at. 1974 was a strange year for the Chevelle. The super sport package was gone, and if you wanted anything with moderate performance you had to get the Laguna S3... no thanks. I really like this Chevelle and its simplicity. I believe the owner had stated it started life as a straight-6 car and he installed a factory correct 454 for that year. I think it's super cool. That generation of Chevrolet Chevelle is really starting to grow on me. It's opponent is just as strange. We have a 1957 Ford Custom 300 supercharged. It's not a Ford Fairlane, it's a Custom 300. And yes, you read that correctly. It has a supercharger. You could get that supercharger on any Ford that year with a 312ci V8. There were even a few placed into 4 door sedans, and even fewer into Rancheros! Not a ton of boost from that supercharger, around 4.5 - 6 PSI, but still VERY cool. I suspect the biggest limiting factor to the Ford is the transmission. The Ford-O-Matic was okay, but not the greatest for performance. Either way, I'm excited to watch this match-up!
Remember, both of these cars participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, so check them out on fb. Their rules are listed below:
For 1955 to 1979 musclecars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles.

Any convertible running faster then 13.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.

All Engines - 1.5 extra points allowed over advertised.
The camshaft must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed for the type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). Roller cams NOT allowed.
The valve train must be factory stock for the year, make, and horsepower claimed.
The ignition system must be stock, including the distributor, cap, coil, and wires. Points may be replaced with any electronic conversion that fits under the stock distributor cap.
The carburetor must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Jetting and metering changes are permitted. THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY MUST BE IN PLACE AND FUNCTIONAL!
Cast-iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. Internal modifications to the exhaust manifolds are NOT allowed. Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that came with headers delivered in the trunk. Pipes must be routed as they were originally for the year, make, model, and engine combination. Mufflers must be stock looking in design, that is, oval in shape. Reproduction tires or radial tires only. You are allowed to run tires one size over stock.

There was also a gray and white 4 door Fairlane 500 built in 57 with the Supercharged 312. Only 4 door produced with the F-Code option. Really cool story behind that car. It was ordered new by a North Carolina moonshiner and paid for in full in cash at the time it was ordered. But the guy got arrested before he could ever take delivery of the car so it was sold to someone else who later had the Supercharger removed because it guzzled gas so bad. But miraculously the guy kept both the Supercharger and the car for many years until it was sold to a new owner and restored

Surprising how well that Chevelle leaves with that tall rear gear. But may be somewhat decieving too as that Ford trans is definitely holding it back off the line. It sure pulls on the top end to achieve basically the same MPH as the Chevy in each race.

Yes, I noticed the trap speeds as well. I think the Ford would have overtaken the Chevelle if it had a longer run. Agreed also that the Ford driver just couldn't bring it off the line as quickly as the Chevelle driver, but I think some of that is poor reaction times more so than design shortcomings. Either way (Chevelle or Ford) it was fun to watch this older iron going at it! Even though I lean toward GM products, I would have LOVED to have seen this match up with the Ford having a driver that was as capable of a good leave as the Chevelle had. I remember an old timer talking about these Ford-O-Matics. They were not handy for how they worked manually. In Drive they started in second and went to third. If you shifted manually into low, they started in first and when you shifted to drive they went straight to third. And old timer told me that the trick was to start it in first until it was time to shift. Then shift to drive and immediately back into low again. At that point it would shift to 2nd. Then when it was time to shift again, you could shift back up to drive again, thereby using all three gears. I've never been in a situation where I could test that out myself, but maybe someone on here has heard of this or tried it.

It was just a couple years after emissions requirements and equipement were mandated and gas went from high octane leaded to low octane unleaded. Compression ratios dropped significantly and ignition pulled back to deal with the new fuel, early catalytic converters were choaking the exhaust, and just to make some torque they used small port heads with small valves and damn near perfectly round cam lobes. But it also seems worse than it is since that's a net hp rating which will be automaticly lower than the gross hp rating used in the 60s and earlier.

Ford Y block is a bit of a strange little engine, most common problem was improper oiling to the rocker arms. On trans: there was a Borg Warner 3 speed manual w/ overdrive. My dad had one w/ 292 2 bbl.motor. Their auto trans were a cast iron main body unit that wasn't very efficient & they had 2 speed 3 speed units. Fordomatic & cruiseomatics. The Y block V-8 was discontinued in 62 & dumped in favor of the 289-302 engines. Transmissions morphed into the C-4 & C-6 units that could better compete w/ Chrysler's lightweight all aluminum case 904 & 727 torqueflites.

The transmission was probably it's greatest negative difference between the two but then the carbs and everything else were all old school. I'm really pleased at how close the old girl came to whippin up on that Bowtie. How about two cars that would be a closer match, say the 57 fuel injected Bel-Air and the little Ford we have right now in the video. Now that would be apples to apples instead of a 454 cu. in. monster motor, even though it's been clipped it is still a lot of engine and a much better tranny to boot.
