Hey all! Just wanted to clarify that brightness doesn't mean colour temperature and I should have made that clearer in the video! So when I am saying to avoid the 5000k light bulbs that is addressing the amount of cool, blue light from the bulb. I'm not saying you have to have warm and dim lighting - just the opposite! Add lots of different layers of lighting to create a bright, interesting space that is easy on the eyes and allows you to utilize your space effectively! 💡
So i like the pictures that youve shown but they are really fancy and it seems hard to visualize that for more of a lower middle class home. Is there any way you could try and find some simpler home with good lighting?
I’m an architect and I look at the CRI (color rendering index) if that info is on the bulb box. It tells you how “true” the color will be. Ninety or above is good. A 3000k bulb with a lower CRI will make things look worse than one with a higher CRI, especially in a kitchen. But in general I think your tips are excellent! I would add that a lot of light fixtures cast weird shadows and the manufacturers almost NEVER show that in their photos, so it’s something to watch out for.
The boob light! I didn't notice these lights on the ceiling until my daughter was born. As a breastfeeding newborn, whether these lights were on or off, she would stare at the boob light fixtures in peoples houses with this look of awe and wonder. It was very difficult not to crack up laughing because I didn't want to offend anyone but people usually figured out what she was reacting to. Newborns aren't subtle.
@@michellebowers8652 that is exactly right. That is why I like lighting by a company called Task lighting. Their “tunable” Tandem lighting is great for kitchen areas. High CRI with the ability to tune the color temperature
Nick it would be so awesome if the viewers could send pictures to you and you pick some and comment on what’s right and what could be improved on them!
I literally just went into my bedroom, took off the light cover and there's a switch where you can do 3000, 4000, and 5000... I switched it from 5000 aka hospital to 3000... aka normal bedroom. I thought the higher the number the brighter it was going to be! It looks way better now. Great advice, Nick!
I always thought of them as boob lights too!And they're so boring, especially in bedrooms. But I'm not sure what to put instead when it's a low-ceiling room.
Yes they’re the best especially for different moods! When I have a mad cleaning spree at 2am I need that bright daylight to help make sure its as tidy as can be, and then I swap to a warmer tone for everday living, or some of the fun ambaince lights for watching tv. Also apparently an ad but Im obsessed 😂
So timely. 🤣 My husband replaced all the lights in our gym with daylight bulbs and it looked like a laboratory. Not a great space for a relaxing yoga session. Lol
Sorry, I had to interrupt, I am SO thankful, that you always put the metric measurements as well, because usually when people say that they are that or that many feet, I have NO FRIKKIN IDEA what they are actually talking about! Thank you!!
The tip on swapping builder-grade lighting to something more fitting for our spaces is the best! My house was filled with the semi-rounded peculiar-looking light that you have pointed out in your videos. Pulling them down and adding lighting of my choosing has elevated my spaces and lifted my mood! Lighting is art!
For color temp it can be really really nice to get color changing bulbs for this! I have them throughout the house on timers that change the color temp throughout the day. So if I want the lights on in the morning it'll be nice and daylight bright and then in the evening it will be warm and cozy. Really the best way to go about it because warm lights can sometimes feel really weird in the middle of the day
I’m only 2 minutes into this video and have to say thank you for acknowledging that people often use too cool of a temperature for their lights! When I built my house the builder was telling me that most people go with 5000K and I was like NOOOOOOOO. I’m like a 2700 max kind of girl.
The higher color temperatures are typically more efficacious - meaning higher lumens per watt. Some new homes have to follow strict building codes which limit the amount of wattage that can be used for the general lighting. This why many new homes come with 5K lighting, especially the recessed lights.
I'm NEVER a fan of what "most people" buy, and any salesperson or tradie who uses that phrase with me doesn't get a sale. "most people" are not so bright... bada dum.
I personally prefer the higher kelvin light bulbs for my bedroom. I often times, especially during the winter, find myself dealing with symptoms of depression and the energizing, daylight feel of these bulbs helps with that. It also helps me when I need to work on assignments for my university courses, since my only workspace is in my bedroom. I do have a window that can be used as a source of natural light, but it doesn’t really reach to my desk and when the weather is not ideal it actually causes more darkness and depressive symptoms. I try to balance the energization out by keeping the high kelvin bulbs in the ceiling fan and the low kelvin bulbs in the lamp on my nightstand, this way I can just switch to the lamp at night when I want to relax and go to sleep.
I came here to say the same, I'm new to Nick and binging. Jan 2021 I moved up from So.Nevada to Idaho and I found the winter gloom can be hard to take! I'm ready this year! A few weeks ago I went and bought all 75 or 100 watt daylight bulbs and now when the sun starts setting at 4 I pull my curtains and it's daytime until 8 again, then the big salt lamp goes on to mock that sunset glow until I'm ready for bed. I asked myself honestly if it looks like a hospital and I think the reason I *may* be pulling it off is because my wall paint is a blue/white/grey (SW Rock Candy) and my home is full of wood and plants?? I may volunteer to be roasted...
Specially if you live in a place that sunlight changes through the year, you have to add light layers. You cannot rely on only one point in the ceiling.
Fun fact! I loved Nick’a shirt he’s wearing so much in this video and older ones I immediately bought one when I found the same pattern one day at the mall!
Nick! I am so happy that I have found you and your thorough discussion of home decoration. I have spent days watching your videos, haven't gotten to the end of them, and I have learned so much. You cover everything I need to know. You answer each question I have been agonizing over for ages. I agree with every one of your suggestions. Talk about advice! Wow! I don't have words to express how thrilled I am with your knowledge and the fact that you willingly share it. It's as if you are right in my house answering each individual question and putting my mind at ease. Thank you over and over again!
THANK YOU. So many people forget how lighting is important and how it can make a huge difference in your space even if you don't have your dream decorated and renovated home. I can't stand white/blue light! That is honestly the first thing I notice when entering someone's house and I feel so unconfortable if the lighting is not warm.
Another advantage! I got rid of all the "one light in the center" and installed tiny recessed fixtures that focus on the wall. Reflected light is nicer than direct light. Immediately (and I had not realized this) the room suddenly looked much larger! Most of the "cans" are specifically directed to artwork or a reflective wall ... also the light itself does not "hit you in the face" when you enter the room. All of this was not planned ... but, I "got it my accident." Putting the recessed lights at the periphery of the room make small rooms look larger.
This is random but you are so comforting! I just moved and have been stressed about the lighting and finding comfortability in my new home. I’ve just been struggling… thank you 🙏🏾
When it comes to choosing the type/warmth of light for my rooms, I basically gave up :) To get around this, I bought a cheap Alexa Dot device and some super cheap color changing China knock off smart bulbs. I do love the results from this. I just plug in the bulbs and tinker with both the presets for 'warm light/soft white/daylight' until I find a brightness that works best for my space. More expensive than just grabbing an off the shelf bulb, but really worth it (for me anyways) to get the brightness, shade, and hue of the light exactly to my preference. All of this at a still very affordable price. And being able to dim said bulbs, or change to even more extreme colors for special occasions made this a great option for me. Just something you may wish to explore.
Fabulous video! Everything was spot on! I have 8 chandeliers in my home..wall sconces...pendant..pot light..small mini table lamps..you name it I got and it’s on a dimmer 🤩...lighting is so so important in a home for that warm and welcoming ambiance. If I see any LED blue lights in your house you can bet I bringing warm white bulbs to your house warming party!
They do make some nice ones, but you have to really hunt for them and they tend to be more expensive than your run-of-the-mill ceiling fans. I don't like to see the bulbs in my fans, and that automatically eliminates most of the fans that put out the most light. With some fans, you can change out a low wattage incandescent bulb with an LED that has a higher "equivalent" wattage that still uses fewer watts than the incandescents.
For things like that, I cruise Amazon for ideas, then if I find something I like, I try to find it locally to get a good look at it. Another option is to buy the main unit that you really like then have someone with an artistic flair make you new blades
I worked for a commercial lighting company and I wholeheartedly agree with all of your tips! Contrast, task, and ambient lighting can transform a space from boring to dramatic; from mousy to inviting. Thx!
For many ppl in the deaf community, bright lighting is important because signing needs to be seen. Romantic ambient light can be too dark to easily see hand gestures. Have you ever consulted with a deaf person to emphasize a beautiful space using lighting? If so, what tips can you offer?
I have several friends who are hard of hearing or deaf, and whilst it's absolutely true you need good light to have a good time 😊 you can certainly do so with warmer K lights... You just need more brightness (or watts) or more lights, no need to go to clinical blue 6500K lights. People often confuse light colour with brightness, but those are two different things! Light is an amazingly complex thing 😁
I don't think this video is suggesting that rooms should be dimly lit in all instances. A room being "well lit" is subjective to the individual, their needs, and the purpose of the room. The tips he provides can apply to everyone, especially the tip of having multiple light sources for different purposes. I am photosensitive so I can follow his advice, but would select lighting options that make the room dimmer, like lamps with a thicker shade. Someone who needs the room brighter might choose lighting with thinner shades, multiple bulbs, or have overall more lighting in a room.
I have low vision and need to use bright white bulbs. But I don’t use them all over my apartment- I place them strategically in the areas that I need the most light. That way my entire apartment doesn’t look like a surgical suite. Luckily my vision allows for that LOL
@@sbettieross1490 I'm legally blind as well, my whole house looks like a surgical suite. I get terrible headaches from all the squinting with the warm lights. Do you get headaches from it?
I’m so glad you made this video. Lighting ( for me) is mood enhancing or shockingly cold. Every rental I lived in I took out the overhead lights, sometimes changed color or omitted. Makes a difference in my mood and helps me relax
Artist in traditional media here! I need to have strong daylight bulbs on my work area and to help photograph my stuff for social media. But then I do have nice 3000K mood lighting for winding down for sleep. Both is nice
Definitely to both of you! I find having very diffused lighting, such as globe lights, gives a very soft ethereal look as well. Harsh exposed bulbs can definitely give hospital vibes. Warm lights are nice on things like Christmas trees or reading lights though.
Nick, thank you for your videos. I have been flooded as well and I've been going through the whole process of redoing my flat with your videos. I have ZERO aesthetic sense and your videos seriously help me. Right now I am spending hours planning on lightning...aaaaand there is your video, next manual how to handle the messs I have no idea about. My English level does not provide vocabulary wide enough to show my gratitude. Big "Dziękuję!" from Poland.
YES. on the dimmers - is I have a vision deficiency - so I need *everything* on a dimmer switch. sometimes I am doing something where I need an airport runway to see (threading a needle - etc) but most of the time I want something softer. More lighting options are better than fewer.
So glad you made this video. I see so many ppl install daytime white bulbs in their house. Give off so a cold and bleak atmosphere. I prefer the soft warm light. More relaxing. Only place I’d prefer bright white lights is in bathrooms and laundry room. And garage
This is something my husband and I are *loving* in our new house. It's a 1968 ranch that had a lot of 90's builder grade "updates". We are slowly upgrading every light fixture in the place and it is so fun!
Happy that you are back in your own home. This is a timely video as I sit under horrible 4 foot fluorescent lights at the family cabin. There are two that light up the dining room and kitchen. Next year I will be doing an electrical upgrade, so I can add pots lights in the kitchen, better task lighting and replace the ceiling fixtures. For now, my only option is to replace the tube fixtures with something that has nicer light, but can still light up an 11x24 space. There is a huge window facing NE in the dining room, but it only gets direct light early in the morning the rest of the day it is indirect or reflected off the water.
Ahh you are just so amazing. I swear you are that one person, that everyone wants to be friends with. You have such a fun down to earth demeanor. It's definitely refreshing. I look forward to your videos everytime they come out! Maybe one day you could do a meet and greet. Even better decorate my new home with me even if it's only on zoom or something! 😊 much love to you! ✌🏽💛🤍
One thing to mention as well could be that you need around 6.500 k in lightbulbs if you have tropical plants in your home, especially in the wintertime ... not the most ambient light but way better than sitting in a purple living room!! XD
So important for plant people to keep in mind! You can just turn those bright lights off, or dim them, when you want to get cosy. Or have a timer that turns them on when you're at work.
my front windows from outside make me look like i'm growing "herbs" So glad I switch out the grow lights for nice bright white ones. Still blinds the neighbors but o well. I care more about my plants.
Thank you for this video - I recently moved and using lighting to create rooms within rooms is next on my list. I have a couple of big statement plants so will be using plant friendly spotlights with timers on them. Also there is a stunning inherited antique chandelier (19th century majolica, w full chrystals) that while not providing enough light needs to be lit up as a focal point in the otherwise Scandi-boho kitchen/dining room. I’m considering adding a small, narrow beam spotlight just to enhance the majolica enamels, and keep the rest of the room muted and clean lined. And I have a yearning for Ikea’s everdal floor+tablelamps, w bluetooth dimmers, to add to a sleek calm look
Agree 100% on using light fixtures as part of the decor not just a source of light. I can’t say how many people (friends/family) I’ve had in my home that comment on my light fixtures and how interesting that they are. When I’m re-doing a room I spend just as much time thinking about the type of lighting/fixtures I want as I do the furniture and rest of the decor.
Point #1 is really important! I'm a professional electrician and during my apprenticeship I did a whole semester of lighting design. I still managed to mess up when selecting fixtures! I bought a bunch of puck lights with 5 selectable color temps and they worked out great, but I didn't even check the color temp or color rendering index (CRI) rating of my LED statement fixtures 😕. I went with a deep plum purple paint color in my dining room, and 2500-2700K would be great but my 3200K fixture made it look like a very purple horror-movie torture dungeon
I'm obsessed with the GE reveal bulbs. They are soft white but don't make rooms look yellow. When they are dimmers I feel like they are the perfect balance between being able to see and have bright light, but being cozy at night.
Smart lights allow me to change the temperature and the brightness. Which means it can look like a hospital while I’m cleaning my home, and then a soft warm light in the evening. The flexibility to change is awesome.
DIMMING! Our livingroom had NO ceiling lights. During our remodel, we vaulted our ceiling. We also put in two sets of recessed lighting. Some are dimmable. LOVE LOVE!
I am a photographer and lighting is so important. My husband was lighting designer at Corcoran Art Gallery and won awards for his lighting. He has helped me so much that I have had photos in an international presentation in Morocco. Heaven forbid I come home with the wrong light even for outside lighting. I pay attention because that 48 miles round trip for a light bulb is not fun if I have to make a second trip.
You gave the boob light as an example of what not to do but I find they are often used because the ceiling is low and they are a good option that stays out of the way. The example you provided as replacements were things to hang over tables and stuff. Would love to see some flush lighting examples you’d recommend!
You’re sooo right, I’m a lighting expert for the past 12 years and that’s what we see often… I always make add recessed lights, wall sconce, floor lamps, under cabinets etc, just to make it look good! An other very big mistakes, peoples are choosing fixture too small for the room. The only thing I don’t agree it’s on cheap lighting, cheap lighting really look cheap a tho… you need a minimum of quality…
I live in an older house with small windows and I am basically blind as a bat soooo....I probably blind people with my lighting but I can see so that's all that matters.
We moved into our new home and the lighting was so dim and yellow you couldn't appreciate any of the colors or even see some areas that really needed improvement. We replaced all fixtures with more modern fixtures and put in 60-100w daylight bulbs which brightened up the whole place. I do think the kind of lighting you get makes a difference. For example, exposed bulbs vs the bulbs being behind a nice shade that diffuses and softenss the bright light. I did put a warmer-toned light bulb in the lamps on our entryway table for a cozier light when I want it.
Color temperature is a very objective choice. So, the color you choose is the one you like. There is no wrong color choice except those made without actually caring or understanding color temperature. Soft or low color temperatures may look warm, but can also give the impression of old and dingy painted spaces in some applications.
This! I'm here a year after you and I totally agree. Everyone may be leaving grey and going back to beige but that's why I chose a very quiet blue white wall. I think I can still bring in warm with chocolate browns & brass and avoid the dinge?? I have to let him roast me...
I swear Nick has been following my search history. I have been needing guidance in this area amd have been searching the internet in vain until this video. Thank you!
Thank you for your channel, I really appreciate your professional opinion. It matters, especially when trying to create a warm and comfy home for you and/or selling your home and addressing the 80% of the population out there.
Hi, Nick! We needed to change on of our small, bathroom hallway lights. I took hours searching the web and settled for a little light, little price make due. When we renovate and change out all the brushed nickel hardware, all the lighting can be changed, too. Sometimes it’s necessary to ‘punt’ !
i feel like the lighting layers is missing the "i need to see shit"-lighting. it gets dark at 4:30 in the afternoon in winter where i live and if i clean after work or i'm looking for something, it's going to be dark. i guess it falls under task lighting but sometimes the task requires the whole room to be bright
I now live in Portugal and when you move into a new place, owned or rented you have to bring your own light fixtures 🤷🤷🤷🤷. We didn't know so we were literally in the dark for a few days 🤦. The only lights left behind are the recess lights in the ceiling. I totally agree that you need multiple lighting sources, I am currently working on that for our bedrooms. Great tips, thanks ☺️👍
I have lamps that have two light bulb sockets and switch between daylight (during the day) and warmer lights as the sun goes down. Because my house is shaded and doesn't get a lot of natural light, the daylight bulbs keep me energized throughout the day.
My husband and I are purchasing our first home soon, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel! I was going to start saving some of your videos to a list, but then I realized I would end up saving all of your videos, so I may as well just bookmark your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and opinions with us!
Hi Nick, we have a problem living in Spain. I had a beautiful light over my dining table ,but unfortunately it is so hot 🥵 in the summer months so we have been reduced to using a stand fan which are noisy and keep giving an intermittent blast of air when moving. Today we replaced the light fitting with an overhead fan which is quiet 🤫 and on a low setting will stop us all from roasting or being blown away. It does look ok 👍, and it will do the job. We have air conditioning in the lounge and main bedroom but we wouldn’t be able to have it every place. It would be too expensive and also I don’t think we would have the electric power as we’re always getting power cuts when the heat hits. It’s not what we would have wanted but at least we and our family and friends will feel more comfortable. Good ideas 💡 about light that you’ve discussed. Thank you as always. X
Love this video, I am a renter and I HATE the light fixtures here... I wanna change them but I'm wondering if it's even worth the money :/. ALSO, random but love the editing of this video
@@911nmg I'd also say not only how long you're staying there but also how far are you going to move next time. If you're gonna move quite far and it'd take up too much space in your car/luggage then don't. Another option is you can sell them before you move but that is often very tricky and you'll need to probably go down in price by at least half to be able to sell quick.
Omg the lighting fixture in the thumbnail was the exact same one I saw in a home during house hunting and I told my husband it would have to go and he asked me why...thank you for perfect timing
Great video, Nick, you've explained a lot of issues regarding lighting that were seriously doing my head in. I've been struggling for years to get the ambiance just right and never could find out what I'm doing wrong. Do you have any tips regarding the size of ceiling light in relation to the size of the room? I've never been able to figure it out, always picking lamps too large or too small. Thanks in advance.
So true about the builder grade fixture. The boob light fixture. I have it in every room of my house. Currently in the process of changing to more modern fixture. Already changed 5 fixtures. Got 6 more to go
Nick, I know I'm a little late to the mark, I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear that you were flooded out of your apt. You SO do NOT deserve that!!! I'm glad you're home again and wish you THE BEST (of everything). I love this channel and all it's content and your delivery is fabulous. THANK YOU!
This is brilliant. I’ve shared so many of your videos with friends/family now and I’m sure I’ve offended all of them but I don’t care, they need to listen to you. 😂
So glad I'm not the only one calling them boob lights. Our old rental had them, including a nipple. My husband couldn't be bothered changing them because we lived there only short term, though short term turned to two years. We just moved and our new rental has no lights yet, well just wiring and a light bulb coming from the ceiling. So it is time to finally buy some lights. Definitely taking your tips to heart. I made some notes. Love from the Netherlands.
Another amazing video! Forgot to mention a few weeks back that I picked up a few things from your H &M video. Thanks again for those great suggestions. And what the heck, you’re at 174k? Yowzers! And how great, you’re back home!
Oh awesome! What did you get form H&M? Yes 174k is crazy! I'm trying not to think about it because then I think of how many people watch these! haha Ignorance is bliss sometimes.
@Nick Lewis I bet it’s a tad surreal having perfect strangers watch you! Picked up that great laundry basket, wood planter I’m using to hold pens, scissors, and note pads, charcoal kitty ears felt basket, and small candle. Love everything and for the price, totally amazing!
This video should be in the billions everyone needs to see this, …it’s amazing how you some this up Dimmers I think I rely too much on dimmers and I’m not separating lighting between task and and ambient to accent Something should be said about creating shadows to accent a room through spotlights. your video Assembles so much that it’s hard to be critical of what you have done.
Thanks! Wow, I was looking for just this video about a month ago! I finally gave up, but this one wasn't too late since I procrastinate on a lot of stuff and hadn't done anything yet about my awful lighting. I think the biggest mistake I made was thinking "daylight" meant "natural" meant "good". I see some bulb buying in my future as a first step.
Hi Nick. Could you please make a video about design tricks and tips for small houses/apartments? Or tops mistakes when designing for small spaces? Thanks! Your videos are super helpful and funny as always
People would always look at me like I'm crazy whenever I complained about the lights being too cold and unwelcoming. I never understood how it didn't bother others, and I thought I was alone in my dislike of cold lights in a home setting. Now I feel so validated!
There are FOUR types of lighting. Ambient, task, accent, and sparkle. Sparkle examples are chandeliers and Christmas lights. Sometimes if you have enough of sparkle it could be your ambient lighting, for example, white Christmas lights in an arch to illuminate a walkway.
thank you!! I tell all my friends and family that lighting in the home needs to be WARM and INVITING, but they don’t listen because they think I’m snobby and particular :/ whether they’re right or not is irrelevant.
I was sitting in my office wondering why I don’t like being in here and it’s because of the wrong bulbs in a single stupid boob light. Thank you for making this so easy to understand so I can fix the problem!
Here’s another one...having a ceiling fixture in a spot where you don’t have a tall enough ladder to change the bulb. Current reality in my builder grade home. Why would they make it like that, why, WHY?
You're SO right. I live in a townhouse and I have *2* large pendent lights that would require a 15 foot ladder to replace to bulbs. They look nice decor-wise but I dread the day when I have to replace those bulbs.
For months I’ve been trying to decide on a pendant light or smaller chandelier for my living room and it’s become some kind of phycological experiment to torture me because I just can’t pull the trigger and decide on just one out of the millions of options
Maren, if you will look up a lighting chart of the size light you need and how bright it needs to be for the space of your living room. Literally measure that area, a chart will tell you what you need. Decide what you are wanting from that light fixture. Soft lower light with a pendant or more over all light from a chandelier. What color metal? Usually they say to stay with one dominant metal and two lesser in a room. Are you wanting to make a statement or not? So you need to know your style of your room. Contemporary, transitional, etc. What price point? If you will write those down and find a reputable online lighting company or several... then get into the filter and it will ask colors, price, size and more. Put those in and you will come out with a 200 not 2,000. I promise it will help. It should be exciting for you not overwhelming. Good luck!
Dimmers are so great for setting the mood and atmosphere of a space. Having the ability to easily change the lighting between watching a movie or chatting with friends just makes your guests more comfortable. It's likely subconscious but everyone will appreciate it.
Sadly, LEDs don't "dim to warm" like incandescents do. I use LEDs for general lighting but incandescents for others such as table lamps, under cabinet lighting, and chandeliers. (Some dim to warm LEDs are available, but they can be wildly expensive and may require a particular type of control system.)

@@BradThePitts Good point!
I'm NEVER a fan of what "most people" buy, and any salesperson or tradie who uses that phrase with me doesn't get a sale. "most people" are not so bright... bada dum.
Cooler temperature lights tend to give me headaches. They’re only good for plants.
This shirt was from Frank & Oak if that helps! I actually get a lot of things from there.
I love how it matches his Mid Century Modern style.
Great point on not blinding your guests! Poorly-angled lights can trigger migraines and other headaches. Be kind, don't blind. :-)
This video was so important for me to watch! Most of my life I never felt like I could make my living space a cozy space, and now I know why!
It's so overlooked and so important!
I really want to get a ceiling light fan, but so far they all look so ugly. Can you make a video of ceiling fans that you like/recommend? Thanks!
The struggle is so real!
I have not, but thanks so much for educating me on that, it makes sense!
I actually really like daylight bulbs. I like my furniture/art to be the color I chose instead of having a warm light distort it.
Artist in traditional media here! I need to have strong daylight bulbs on my work area and to help photograph my stuff for social media. But then I do have nice 3000K mood lighting for winding down for sleep. Both is nice
Exactly! I like things in my home to be look clear and crisp. I’ve definitely hated that yellow light glow on crisp white art work.
Definitely to both of you! I find having very diffused lighting, such as globe lights, gives a very soft ethereal look as well. Harsh exposed bulbs can definitely give hospital vibes. Warm lights are nice on things like Christmas trees or reading lights though.
Yes in the end it is personal preference! I would still recommend proceeding with caution with anything in the 5000k area!
@@Nick_Lewis definitely, 4000k is my sweet spot! Lumen make a big difference too, like too bright plus being daylight is going to blind people lol
And garage
Hi Nick! 🙋🏻♀️
I’m renovating my home now and this info is going to be put to use this week. Thank you!!
Its completely awesome to watch a video from someone I'm getting design tips from and find a comment from the person I watch for ukelele lessons
I'm building a house so this is sooooo helpful:)
This is something my husband and I are *loving* in our new house. It's a 1968 ranch that had a lot of 90's builder grade "updates". We are slowly upgrading every light fixture in the place and it is so fun!
Back in your apartment means we NEED a HOME TOUR!!!!!! sorry for all the exclamations but they are fully necessary lmao
I just changed over all my daylight lightbulbs in my bedroom to warm white and omg it made such a big difference! Great video!
My spouse needed this video btw. She’s great at flooding with the one awful light that comes standard. Ceiling fans should NOT have lights.
And just say no to hospital lighting!
Sorry I must disagree.
🤣🤣🤣she is Me and I am her 🤣🤣🤣
Just say no to ceiling fans!
I hate ceiling fans in general. Currently building and caved to my husband wanting one in the bedroom. I agreed but definitely eliminated the light!
LOL I was literally looking at my ' boob light' in my new apartment and thinking immediately that I gotta change it 🤣! Thanks for the tips!
Haha same here.
I like them. They look good on a hallway.
Wow I had no idea! Thanks for mentioning that. We just bought 3 tropical plants for the bathroom.
Most houseplants grow just fine at 4000K which is much more pleasant for human eyes.
my front windows from outside make me look like i'm growing "herbs" So glad I switch out the grow lights for nice bright white ones. Still blinds the neighbors but o well. I care more about my plants.
My boyfriend and I just painted our living room lavender. Is it really that hated of a color? I thought it was quite pretty and it settles my eyes.
It’s all about lighting for me. It creates the whole ambiance of the room, makes all the difference in the world.
Just installed a bunched of smart globes and can’t recommend them highly enough. They have completely changed the atmosphere of my house.
Great video! 5000k in the AirB&B was probably for cleaning purposes - or blinding the guests.
or good lighting for the hidden cameras!!
😳
This is the first time I have heard someone talk about lighten. I learned so much. Thank you
Great video! I don’t think there are many lighting videos on UA-cam. I do love a good daylight bulb though, especially in the kitchen
See Lisa Holt's channel.
This video came at the exact right time! I just moved into a new apartment and most of the light fixtures are not doing the place justice!
You gave the boob light as an example of what not to do but I find they are often used because the ceiling is low and they are a good option that stays out of the way. The example you provided as replacements were things to hang over tables and stuff. Would love to see some flush lighting examples you’d recommend!
Right. Boob fixtures are often in entries or hallways where doors swing open. I have 12” clearance and need to find a nice replacement.
“Blinding your guests: Allow me to explain. First of all, don’t blind your guests”
Oh man his dry humour kills me every time! 🤣🤣🤣
Lighting in a space is Everything! Changes the entire mood and atmosphere of a space.
Thank you!
Blue lights are good for home offices because they keep you alert, so don't throw them out just put them in the lamp you have on your working desk :)
Thank you for your channel, I really appreciate your professional opinion. It matters, especially when trying to create a warm and comfy home for you and/or selling your home and addressing the 80% of the population out there.
Changing out lighting is usually one of the first things I do, along with painting, whenever I move to a new house.
Hi, Nick! We needed to change on of our small,
bathroom hallway lights. I took hours searching the web and settled for a little light, little price make due. When we renovate and change out all the brushed nickel hardware, all the lighting can be changed, too. Sometimes it’s necessary to ‘punt’ !
love your tips, also i am 5'2" so obviously i expect fully customized-to-my-height spotlights when I come visit you. 🤣 YOU'RE SO TALL! 😍
You can hold me to that!
This couldn’t be a more needed instructional video. Not many people put a lot of thought into lighting
i feel like the lighting layers is missing the "i need to see shit"-lighting. it gets dark at 4:30 in the afternoon in winter where i live and if i clean after work or i'm looking for something, it's going to be dark. i guess it falls under task lighting but sometimes the task requires the whole room to be bright
I call it "cleaning lighting". A lighting that looks like some military search light. That I only use when cleaning in december.
Same here! :)
This is so smart!
Please do a video for how renters can make there place feel more personal without paint.
Welcome back home! Dimmer totally worth it. I live in apt, got kit off Amazon and I feel so much better. Thanks for the video!
Depends on how long you'll be staying, if you choose something neutral you can take it everywhere you move
Got 6 more to go
This is the video I have been waiting for! We're just about to move into another rental and I really want to upgrade the lighting! Thank you 😊
Nick, I know I'm a little late to the mark, I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear that you were flooded out of your apt.
lol If you think you've offended friends and family, imagine what my friends and family think! They all think these videos are about them...
This video should be in the billions everyone needs to see this, …it’s amazing how you some this up
Dimmers I think I rely too much on dimmers and I’m not separating lighting between task and and ambient to accent
Something should be said about creating shadows to accent a room through spotlights. your video Assembles so much that it’s hard to be critical of what you have done.
A video on outdoor solar light placement would be awesome! :)
Would love to see this.
The sass, haha. Also, I love that you are using videos now not just still images. Very fun!
Hi Nick. Could you please make a video about design tricks and tips for small houses/apartments? Or tops mistakes when designing for small spaces? Thanks! Your videos are super helpful and funny as always
I’m always so excited for your videos every Saturday! Can you do one of window treatment for different rooms/types of windows?
Yes to all of this! Love the Saturday AM videos, and I would also like to see a video on window treatments lol
Yup I need to do one on window treatments soon!
Sometimes if you have enough of sparkle it could be your ambient lighting, for example, white Christmas lights in an arch to illuminate a walkway.
thank you!! I tell all my friends and family that lighting in the home needs to be WARM and INVITING, but they don’t listen because they think I’m snobby and particular :/
whether they’re right or not is irrelevant.
"Don't blind your guests, seems obvious but..." 😂
but... I've been blinded many times!
Ugh I got these fabulous lights from Amazon and they are like bright orbs on sticks
I was sitting in my office wondering why I don’t like being in here and it’s because of the wrong bulbs in a single stupid boob light. Thank you for making this so easy to understand so I can fix the problem!
Hey nick! What kind of bulbs belong in a kitchen?
Personally I like 3000K for ambiance/cooking, and 5000K for cleaning
I use 4000 personally but they're on a dimmer :)
he doesn't have as many subscribers as he deserves .. soo much good advice in all his vids.
Here’s another one...having a ceiling fixture in a spot where you don’t have a tall enough ladder to change the bulb. Current reality in my builder grade home. Why would they make it like that, why, WHY?
change the bulb for a good quality LED one and you should be fine for 15 years :)
You're SO right. I live in a townhouse and I have *2* large pendent lights that would require a 15 foot ladder to replace to bulbs. They look nice decor-wise but I dread the day when I have to replace those bulbs.
Loved your video except the boxed in look. I would never remember which unit had what in it. But I agree with most of what you say. Thanks Nick. Xx
I use cool bulbs for my living room and office and won't go back. I literally felt my mood lift as soon as I turned them on.
My husband is the same
It’s so weird and personal I think too. Cool lights give me an anxious feeling.
Welcome back home, Nick! I hope you never have to experience flooding again.
Excellent description of layering lights. You explain things very well!
For months I’ve been trying to decide on a pendant light or smaller chandelier for my living room and it’s become some kind of phycological experiment to torture me because I just can’t pull the trigger and decide on just one out of the millions of options
It's almost like they are too many options in lighting!
Good luck!
😩 Same! I’m building and it’s been torture picking lighting...
