@Arlo the "Berries" attack names are a reference to his favorite made up Magical Girl Anime. The Berry types are the names of the characters if that helps a little XD
and you can play a video game of his favorite anime and watch the opening on his TV in the apartment in No More Heroes 1 and 2
And everyone knows, if you’re not yelling the name of a signature attack when you pull it off, is it even a signature attack?
Just to add, most people who played the previous games don’t know this. It’s pretty hard to notice and never mentioned in dialogue (as far as I know).

Yeah the very first thing Travis does in the series is slap a “Bizarre Jerry/Jerry Force 5” poster on his wall and say “Moe” so I alway just assumed he was quoting that show

Never played a game in this franchise, but "the protagonist yells too many berry names" is the best criticism I've ever heard about a video game.
It makes sense if you've played the previous NMH games.

As a fan of the No More Heroes games, I have to say that Arlo nailed the spirit as "auteur energy". That's exactly the feeling of the game - it's an arty project hidden in a commercial piece; but in reality it's closer to Katamari Damashi in weirdness.
Except absolutely terrible. The amount of tedium is unbearable. It's a game straight from 2007 bit even more boring. There's some AMAZING moments and then a bunch of tedious boring crap in-between. The overworld is embarrassing.
And the performance is literally as bad as cyberpunk on last gen at launch.

No more heroes 3 has the exact same problems as the orginal games a decade+ earlier. It's a dated game. Like shenmue 3.
Puts a smile on my face to hear someone enjoying the game without playing the previous titles. Goes to show how fantastic Grasshopper is as a developer, even with the games short comings. Great review bro!
The suit is new, but he had a giant mech called Glastonberry in the second game but had it taken away because it was too big for public use lol
Not only that, but it also was decommissioned due to the dark matter in the mech severely deteriorating it.
I get the feeling the very specific goal, “Get a blue fuzz puppet to positively rate one of my games” has been an aspiration of Goichi Suda’s for a very long time.
No Mores Heroes is one of those franchises where you love it despite the flaws

I think that really goes for all games directed by SUDA51. They all have some HUGE flaws, yet they hold a special place among my all time favourite titles.

I read the title as "NWH" and thought Arlo crossed over into spider man

Almost every negative brought up by Arlo was something the people who followed the series learned to tolerate during the 1st and 2nd game.
Trust me Arlo we feel you, but the series is just so dang good and fun, it's totally worth it
Really? I played the first and I quite liked it, and accepted it for what it was at the time.
This is even worse than Game Freak not evolving Pokémon. Feels like nothing but a cheap product.

The only bad point is the performance on the overworld tbh, which is the same as nmh1.
Yeah for real guys, I love the series. Travis is funny and the combat system here is better too. I just started playing and enjoy it. But, ad I said the framerate thing has been there since NMH 1

We should feel lucky to have a dev like Suda 51 with a gaming brand on it's third installment. They make some of best weird action games out there, and that goes beyond "hey, weird Japanese stuff." Never leave us Suda 51.

No More Heroes 3 is to me a perfect fusion of all the previous entries and that's why I encourage you to play the first two games as well.
Travis Strikes Again is also great but it's way different than the rest and in a certain way now that I think about it, you may end up liking it the most. 🤔
I want to play this but I very much plan to do the first two games before getting to III. It’s nice that it’s good either way.
i blasted through no more heroes 1, 2 AND travis strikes again in anticipation for NMH3. knowing about the prior world and characters is a good call!
Also need to play Travis Strikes Again, as it apparently has a lot of plot significance.

Travis Strikes Again is arguably the most important game for you to play before 3
The gameplay is actually a lot more fun than the critics made it out to be, and the story is REALLY good! Travis's characterization in TSA is really genuine and nice, it's fun to see
I personally absolutely loved this game. I am a diehard SUDA51 fan and it was really cool hearing what you thought of it as someone who hasn't played any other SUDA51 games. And yes you should check NMH 1 and 2.
I think this vid just convinced me to give the series a shot, Arlo! Always thought it looked cool, but never pulled the trigger. Gonna start with the first game and make my way up! Hopefully the third will be cheaper by the time I get to it.

@@nicksmi56 idk what region your in but a few days ago I picked up tsa for £13 new and that includes the season pass in the physical version. The digital version is a little more expensive especially if you want the season pass with it
2 hours in myself, and this game pulls so much from Travis Strikes Again, it reminds me of the relationship between Twin Peaks: The Return and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Definitely don't sleep on TSA if you want to get all up in the guts of this franchise.

Just got the game and started playing it, And I'm glad to say that this game is sick af.
The visual and style make the gameplay feels so good it's incredible, I'm not far in yet but from a first glance, it looks like a massive step up from the first 3 games.
It's great hearing such an honest review outside of the fandom.
Also i had to watch the review twice because Badgirl's theme is such a distracting banger! Great review, subbed super fast.
So the reason why Travis shouts berries: from the beginning of the series Travis just names his moves after ice cream flavors. And he shouts them like an anime character. Why? Because he's an absolute dork! No other real reason that I can remember!

The moves are named after his favorite Anime Waifus that he watches on his TV and plays games of in No More Heroes 1 and 2 and yes you can actually watch the Opening of the fictional Anime and play an Arcade Game with those characters in NMH 1&2
Travis turns into the love child of a Kamen Rider and a Gundam. SOLD! Still need to finish up Travis Strikes Again though.

If anyone wants to catch up to the story, play 1 then travis strikes again. 2 is not directed by suda and is pretty much all but denounced by suda himself.
I loved NMH2 on the Wii! It's such a fun and silly game. The main character is enough for me to love it.

When this game was announced I was curious. I was curious about the series as a whole for quite a while but never had the chance to play them. When the first two games were released on Switch as digital, I knew the time had come for me to jump into the series. So now I have all 3 games on my Switch, ready to be played and looking forward to it.

Oh boy, you've got a LOT to learn about the No More Heroes series.
The more you learn, the better the experience is going to be for you.
And yes, you should play the previous games there is a LOT of story you're missing out on.

I agree with Arlo. Never played these games, but they always struck me as something that the developers really loved to make. You can tell they had a lot of fun with it, and that makes me happy.
Don't worry Arlo, I've played both main series games and still had plenty to be confused about; for example: why is Bishop the video store dude alive? Brother was very, VERY dead in NMH 2. Anyway glad you enjoyed. 1 and 2 are very much worth playing! Travis Strikes Again I didn't play much of but I do think it has some cool concepts in there.

I'm amazed at how chaotic and random the presentation of this game is but it all feels so cohesive and well put together. But I'm a big fan of No more heroes one and two so maybe I'm biased
.... the prior comment was written after playing the first battle. It was epic. after the first battle then you feel how unfinished the world is. The boss battles are amazing, the dialogue is great, but the open world feels unfinished and dead. And there are no 'levels' that you play through to get to the boss at the end like the original game. I miss that. I'd kill for a NMH in the style of a Yakuza game.

Fell in love with the series back when I played the first one on the wii. It recieved no fanfare and absolutely nobody was talking about it, but when I saw Suta 51s name on the box, that was good enough for me. Rented it from the ye oldie Blockbuster, took it home, played it, and I loved it from Travis' first spoken line in the game... which was him yelling "Fuck head!" after decapitating a body guard. Good times.

SUDA51 is a VG auteur like Kojima but without the pretension. The first NMH is easily one of my favorite games of all time.
Whereas Kojima's just kind of an asshole high on his own reputation, SUDA really does just do what he likes and doesn't seem to care about selling tons of copies. He seems like the kind of creator who's just happy so long as he's making what he wants to make.

So pumped 3 is finally out! Just beat the first boss, 2 hours flew by! If you haven't played this series yet you should get them all (Travis Strikes Again also, although a little repetitive).
He named his beam katana Blood Berry based off of his favorite anime, Pure White Lover Bizarre Jelly, which is apparently a fictional anime in the No More Heroes universe. It stars 3 scantily clad school girls fighting giant monsters in mechs....and the name of the characters are Strawberry, Blueberry, and Cranberry.
Hence, why he yells their names out as he finishes off people with the blood berry...Yeah, its weird but on brand since there's a lot of references about him being an otaku.
Nice to see Arlo try something outside his comfort zone.

The art style(s) of this game looks amazing. I probably still won't play it but I'm kind of sensitive to over the top flashing lights, movement so playing a whole game with it would be too much.

the reason Travis calls out his attacks is because he's a massive, massive anime nerd. Not only are his attacks the names of characters from his fave anime (which doesn't really exist btw), but he's also trying to emualte anime heroes who call out their attacks to emphasise the OOMPH (its also used to audibly tell the player when they're finishing a combo and doing big damage)

NMH3 made me stop playing board games for the first time in almost a year. The intro of the game was really something else. I have, so far, enjoyed it very, very much so far!
It sounds like the first No More Heroes. I LOVED THE FIRST NO MORE HEROES.
Thanks Arlo, I was gonna pass this one because the second game was sad, but now I am all into buying the game.
Recently I've been playing a lot of games that just don't run well on the Switch but are still pure fun. Makes me nostalgic for the GameCube era, where it felt gameplay was almost always prioritized as the game itself was never going to look utterly fantastic or anything.

If you like this all the way through, I really recommend the first one; a lot of things you're saying about 3 apply there, too. I'm currently going back and playing 2, and digging it so far, so playing that would be a good choice, too.

The chapter intros and credits are based on the old style of ultraman, even some items are named after ultraman characters.

If you liked NMH3 then you should check out the other two games Arlo, they both have colorful casts of characters to fight and interact with and have a genuinely nice feel and aesthetic to them.

Mad respect to Arlo for giving the game a fair go even though he wasn't interested and it's not in his wheelhouse. He found stuff to appreciate even as someone that's not into No More Heroes. Whereas the dummies at IGN and Gamespot gave it scores lower than some actually terrible games just for being a No More Heroes game. But I guess that's why we love Arlo and no one loves IGN.
If you enjoyed this game go back and play the first. The first game was so much fun. It’s everything you described this one as applies there too. The tournament has so many twists and turns especially the final two bosses.
The first two games are good. I haven't played Travis Strikes Again, but I read that it appeals more to hardcore fans and is just as essential to the story of NMH3.

It IS the most popular folk album of all time currently, but I fail to see how it has "redefined" the genre since. Today's folk still is more influenced by Pink Moon and even Mark Fry than ITAOTS.

So I just watched a video talking about the game awards 2019 and there was a trailer for this game in it and the trailer completely baffled me so I looked it up only to find a crap ton of reviews from just 4 hours ago.
U gota go back and play NMH 1 and 2 on Switch then too. And Travis Striked Again, No More Heroes is also very awesome and fun.

Honestly this isn't my type of game... but it looks nice. I hope the game is faithful to the fans of NMH1 and NMH2 while being open to newcomers to the series.
I like the game so far, but honestly I am a little bummed out by the customization. The first game there were a bunch of jackets, shirts, pants, gloves, and sunglasses.
Maybe it’s affecting me more than others because in the first (and for what I played of the second) game I would COMPLETELY change up my look each big fight. It was a little thing, but it was fun.
(Also if it gets unlocked later in the game never mind this comment)
