I think what's cool about Clovers is that they want to prop themselves up as a "core development team", meaning they want to make sure they get the creative decisions in the game making process, but lending themselves out to other people's IP, like Dimps.

    • @MrGonz801
      @MrGonz801 23 дні тому +12

For the uninitiated, Dimps made every handheld Sonic from Advanced 1 to Lost World (3DS), but they also made all of the DBZ Budokai games for Bandai Namco, the made Street Fighter 4, 5 and Street fighter X Tekken for Capcom, Freedom Wars for Sony.
They've been really prolific behind the scenes for decades

Platinum was doing very fine for themselves for a while as a "gun for hire", almost all the games they made were for IPs owned by other companies. More recently though Inaba, the current president, wanted to no longer rely on other bigger publishers and wanted Platinum to be able to self publish their own IPs, unfortunately his solution to get this to work was the same thing that clouds the judgement of many execs these days: "Games as a Service." If you are familiar with what kinds of people were big leaders at Platinum you'd know that this direction being forced upon them was not gonna fly, which is what lead Kamiya to leaving and very likely the same for the others that left. Also btw Clovers is completely independent and are not owned by Capcom.

From the sounds of it, it seems the CEO of Platinum was pushing for the company to go a "Games as a Service" route that Kamiya did not fw, so Kamiya broke off to create Clovers (and later the rest of the PlatSquad decided to jump). Good news-- Clovers looks to be just as indie as the original Platinum was, despite tagging with Capcom for Okami, so it's entirely possible that Clovers just ends up being "Platinum 2: the Platinuming".

@@nullthenightcat "If I continue working here, my artistic spirit will die." is what he summed up his feeling as.
The longer story is that Atsushi Inaba, the CEO, went for self-publishing because he didn't want to be reliant on freelance work for publishers anymore. That lead to the studio pivoting to focus more on projects that would help the confidence of investors, which means more live servicey stuff, less oneoff weird stuff. (and more stuff like Project G.G., intended to be an IP Platinum would wholly own, that Kamiya had apparently lost faith in as a project after ~3 years of development) Kamiya had always been comfortable in the past trying to be the creative balance to Platinum's business needs, but he had hit a breaking point and felt that balance had been lost, he and Inaba weren't able to work it out over 3 months of negotiation, so he left.
That is of course only his side of the story, but it does check out with what information we already have publically.

To add, Platinum got into a trap of developing for other publishers and IPs, Nier, Transformers, Star Fox. Even Bayonetta needed Nintendo's support to revive. The company pivoted in two ways, teaming up with Square for a live service, Babylon's Fall, and a personal big project. So it's not just that the games they make don't hit gangbusters sales, it's that despite going independent they haven't really had many opportunities to make original, independent titles. The closest three are Wonderful 101, Bayo 2, and Astral Chain. And all of that was on the back of Nintendo.
It's hard to tell if Kamiya liked or disliked the situation with Nintendo (up until Bayo 3). But if the problem doesn't stem from Kamiya himself, it's very likely that modern Capcom might be an even better fit. The fact that his team left with him despite the non-compete might be a good sign that he's not the key problem.

    Here's what happened with Platinum:
    1. Platinum higher-ups realize that they basically don't have any IP, which is traditionally the biggest asset of any media company. _Bayonetta_ is owned by Sega, _Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance_ is owned by Konami, _Nier: Automata_ owned by Square Enix, _Astral Chain_ is owned by Nintendo, leaving them with _The Wonderful 101_ as the company's sole franchise that isn't at the whim of another publisher.
    2. Platinum decides to pursue a publishing business to bolster the creation of new IP.
    3. Building a publishing arm is expensive, so Platinum secures a big investment from Tencent.
    4. Tencent starts cracking the whip, demanding a turn to live service games to get as fast a return on their investment as possible.
    5. When the new live service projects like _Babylon's Fall_ start failing, Platinum starts turning new single-player games into live services. This includes Hideki Kamiya's _Project G.G._ which he intended as the third game in a spiritual trilogy which included _Viewtiful Joe_ and _The Wonderful 101_ and the sudden move towards live service led Kamiya to leave Platinum and found CLOVERS.

It’s such a fantastic, different experience from Platinum, but it was not going to have the staying power of a traditional Bayonetta game.
Still, having Kamiya return to Capcom for an Okami sequel is such a dream come true! I was ecstatic and have been replaying Okami, still such a fantastic game. Imagining a new story in that universe, with updated mechanics, and 20 years of progress is amazing!

Yeah, I loved that game too, and, though sales can be unclear, especially since Digital is not really tracked, I would be VERY surprised if Bayonetta Origins was above 500,000, total, between physical and digital. (Physical only, Bayonetta 1 and 2 are supposedly around 1.2 million on the Switch, but I would honestly say there's likely at least 800,000 units of digital sales (it's Bayonetta, I can absolutely understand people not wanting to proudly display the physical box on their shelf) for those games, on the Switch alone, and another 500,000 digital sales for Bayonetta 3. Total sales: 10.1-10.2 million.)

Some other series that got high results of people wanting back are Megaman, Dino Crisis, & Ace Attorney. (Also, Resident Evil & Devil May Cry but I feel like they will obviously get new entries)

It's very similar to why Mikami left Tango - he didn't like the fact that he didn't have creative control and freedom over what was being made. Kamiya has also publicly shared these kind of sentiments multiple times over the years, how he'll direct a game and they'll pull him away from the position of director for subsequent sequels, the overbearing demand for having to create products that the parent company wants to pursue vs. what the actual developers want to pursue, etc. Also, Capcom doesn't own CLOVERS, they're simply the publisher / partner and own the Okami I.P., CLOVERS being the developer. It'd be the same with Viewtiful Joe if that were to happen next, too, but theoretically they can just go and just do something with somebody else after the Okami sequel.
I'm not sure that I find anything weird about it - if anything, the fact that several elite members of Platinum willingly followed Kamiya to his new studio tells me everything I need to know. These guys want to make what they want to make, and don't want all of this unnecessary, corporate interference meddling with their creative decisions and freedom, and you know what? Good for them. I think this is pretty exciting and I'd love to see more OG devs get together and do this kind of thing more.

This whole situation with PGames is a lot....LOT deeper than you think. It's been a thing for far longer. Litearlly the Wonderful 101 kickstarter seems to be around the time it started to go bad, because backs of that Kickstarter, 4 years later, STILL do not have most of their items and it's basically due to the fact PG has been screwing around, and being extremely difficult with people. They bought rights to a game while the Kickstarter items were still being done, meaning they need to be reprinted because "Nintendo" isn't a licence holder anymore. This ties in seemingly with Kamiya aparently being pretty pissed off about "Project GG" which was his ultraman game to finish out his Tokusatsu/Japanese hero game set. That was cancelled and that was the last straw and he left. It's really REALLY messy. A lot of internal projects in PGames seem to be dead, and a lot of people think it was along time coming. Including the PG work done for FF16 (they did all the Titan Lost fight, that's why Ifrit does the red hot kick in game)

Iirc, it sorta went around that a big part of why Clover didn't do well was that certain people in Capcom (*cough* Inafune *cough*) wanted a push for western developed games, as stuff like CoD and Halo had taken off. This prompted aaid people to interfere with non-western lead or targeting projects
This is likely the reason why Clovers games were not marketed well
When Platinum started, the head of the company was well known for striking deals with big publishers and properties, and thats how games like Bayonetta and Transformers Devastation happened. However, he was kicked out by the board right when the games as a service craze started happening. Current president Atsushi Inaba has been steadfast in the service game persuit, even after several of them have failed and Platinum bleeds talent due to projects not being greenlit or panning out
This is almost assuredly the reason why Kamiya left, as nothing he was slated to direct at Platinum had seen the light of day in like a decade. No one knows what happened to his Ultraman tribute game
So it has sorta been bad luck. Platinum got rheir big break with Nier: Automata, but they started putting themselves in the gas chamber immediately afterwards. Hopefully whoever Clovers is working with at Capcom has their head screwed on tight

Well, luckily, Clovers is an independent studio, so even if Capcom went south again, it won't drag them down.

Oh for sure, but there's still that worry for the Okami sequel

not all the staff at platnium went to clovers either, its koyama and kamiya heading it with a team from plat (not all). tinari (bayo origins) is now in finland for work, taura (astral chain) left (we don't know where) may be square related. there Kenji Saito (Metal Gear Rising), and Masaki Yamanaka (Anarchy Reign) may also be gone. i don't know about sales being all as most games broke a million copies, but inabas push/ decisions may have a hand in it. i'm sure we will hear more soon.

Not surprised that Tencent destroyed Platinum basically.

Once upon a time I nearly cosplayed Viewtiful Joe. I didn't because the man making my helmet scammed me out of my money and used the helmet as a base for a more popular cosplayer. Needless to say though I am so stoked at the potential for a new one and honestly I'm over the moons with hype for Okami 2 I adored the first one and okamiden

New Viewtiful Joe is something I’ve always assumed could happen but hasn’t. Lordy loo will I take one of those.

Maybe the developers just follow Kamiya around like a God

I would love a new Viewtiful Joe. Though I'd also be happy with a remake or even a remaster compilation of the first 2 games. If I saw "Viewtiful Joe 1 + 2 Remaster" in an announcement from Capcom I would be ecstatic!
