First heard this in Ireland in 1981. Never forgot the sound of it. (My mom was a Frank O'Connor fanatic.) But so many great artists contributed to this masterpiece, starting with whoever first wrote it in Irish so long ago...mind-boggling!
This classic record must be reissued. I had it the 80's but I lost it on one of my many moves. I think on the album it goes straight into an incredible cover of Jon Martyn's "John the Baptist" after 'I am stretched'... . This is my favourite Irish album of all time.
Bought this album in 1980. All early Scullion stuff is classic. long lost & would love to get another copy but can't find this or White side, etc anywhere..
then it goes straight into a fabulous version of the late great John Martyn's "John the Baptist". Its criminal that Scullions 1st three albums (all classics) are not available, when so much crap is still out there being sold.

Dead Can Dance brought me here and I did not regret it.

Its that closing fiddle solo that blows everybody else's versions out of the water. Heart-rending!

I still have my signed copy by all four after a gig in Galway late 1979.
Mine is a musicassette and I agree its quite unique in its performance and production …top top class
Love this album, still have the original vinyl
This goes straight into "John the Baptist" if I remember rightly.. what an album !
Now this is a gem to unearth!
Sinéad did a good job on this one also.. Thanks for uploading this, good to learn Irish folk.
This and Dead Can Dances versions are gorgeous!
In my Sinead playlist with her album version and a remix. Thanks for the upload!
G.K. Chesterton - 'The great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad, For all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad.'
what on earth was GKC on about? The Irish might be mad, but they've more joyful songs than sad and I've never heard of a happy war.
@@BarryHawk It's a famous paradox even for it's time.

Me too Che. A great, great album, full of marvels like this tune. Translated from the Irish by Frank O'Connor.

Yeah it does go into John the Baptist❤
Always thought this was a Sinead song but it's a 17th century poem. By anonymous.
Listen to the one of Dead Can Dance :)
Shivering at some times but excellent interpretation though.
Check out Abney Park's version of the song too - great band.
Bit scratchy at the start but i think it's otherwise ok.
The scratches add to it I think, Thanks for uploading this! :)
Its perfect!
I like it
