Roselli Philosophy: „Smith Heimo Roselli refuses to build anything non-functional or unnecessary into his knives. The unessential is detrimental."
A Puukko is a small traditional Finnish belt-knife with a curving cutting edge, a flat spine, and a rounded wood handle. The traditional handle material is birch. The Puukko was developed for life in outdoor environments where hunting, fishing and woodworking are daily chores. In Finland, receiving a Puukko as a gift is considered an honor. - Розваги
I hate it when people judge them because they're not fancy or cool. Puukkos are good for any task, was it hunting, fishing, cutting branches, or anything!
Sawyer Cantrell the normal or UHC? I own the carpenters knife and have had no edge chipping, I can't speak for the UHC though
use my UHC carpenter everyday for everything...never chipped yet..
its.very different...sharpens pretty easy...but crazy tough...you can strop all day and never tell at all..ive got alot of different steels...and i pretty much only carry this knife...from their site = Optical equipment is unable to detect any grain boundaries in the steel, which enables excellent characteristics.
i can only assume thats why its not chippy...at least not for me
Eine gute und gut gesprochene Vorstellung, besten Dank🙂
Beautiful in their simplicity. Thanks for showing these Stefen.
Excellent review, best on Roselli knives that I have found. Thank you for posting it.
beautiful.. thanks for the intro to these simple yet elegant blades
I had to re temper the blade with a torch because the edge was way to brittle, but after doing that this knife became extraordinary. This handle fits my hand like a glove. Other than that small glitch this knife is remarkable. This knife is scary sharp, bravo.
Thank you for the review of 2 Roselli knives, I appreciate the information you provided on both the knives and sheaths.
Roselli raised prices during the COVID-19 emergency. It’s a shame!
An excellent, concise and informative video. Thank you very much!
I purchased the Spyderco Puukko a couple weeks back and I couldnt be happier with it. I love the simplicity of the Puukko design and the minimalistic approach. Great review as always. Keep up the great work.
Excellent, clear video. Thank you.
wow, amazing as ever stefan, keep up the excellent work my friend :)
It is a common stereotype in Sweden that all of our Finnish brothers carry knives at all times. While this is perhaps overstating the case one can not argue that they make very nice blades in the classical style. In fact, I believe their more flared handle design is slightly better than our own oval tradition.
A very nice video and a very clear explanation of what ultra HC means. I've come to expect this from you but it is still worth noting that you make some of the best blade reviews on YT.
Nice blades, excellent review Stefan.
Elegant simplicity--I like these knives very much. It is no wonder Puukkos are so popular in the Bushcraft community--a design based on outdoor use that has been refined for hundreds of years should obviously work well. Scandinavian products generally seem to be high quality, without necessarily costing a fortune. Thanks for sharing.
Love rosseli knives got one when i was 15 years old 26 years a go hands down best knife ever ! and i still love the knife.
I have the UHC Hunter and it's my favorite knife. I love it . Just purchased the carpenter blade I'll put my own handle on it
Another intersting and informative review. Danke.
You have an Exquisite Taste for knives, thanks for sharing.
A very good review. I have a number of knives, the hunting knife loos very interesting.
These are some great knives. I am getting the carpenter next, in the UHC most likely. Nice job on vid and product knowledge.
Just a quick note on the finish of the smooth wood handle-- it actually gets grippier when it's wet.
Really nice blades, these look very special indeed. That UHC steel is something else.
Thanks for another excellent review, Stefan. I, too, am drawn to simple elegance in knife design, as exemplified in many of the traditional knives you review.
Roselli raised prices during the COVID-19 emergency. It’s a shame!
PUUKKO Best knive ever!
Great video : P
Thank you, Jesse!
Thank you!
I'm quite happy to see such high quality, hand made cutlery is still present for a relatively low price. Such an extremely special steel like that of the Hunting Knife seems akin to those steels used in custom blades, at least in its lack of prominence. Quite frankly, the quality of the knives shown is something the world just doesn't see all that often anymore, and their beauty seems second to none, and for their price I'd say the quality exceeds what they go for.
roselli makes some of the best modern puukko knives.
With only some fine refinements that take nothing usefull from the
tradition or add anything useless to it.
Thanks for watching, Mark!
Thanks for stopping by, Dan!
Danke fürs Reinschauen, Stephan!
Das Carpenter finde ich wunderschön!
Sehr schöne Messer hast du dir da rausgesucht....war sehr unterhaltsam.....danke,wieder mal! :-)
Ciao
Stephan
Good review.👍
Glad you liked it.
Thank you for your kind words, Herr Feldwebel!
thanks for the review! i really want one. They look beautiful and elegant and simple.
Hey but quick carving tip, you're 'sweeping' your strokes. try and to aim the blade and push it straight in that direction. if you want to do 'scallop' cuts then use the curved part of the blade. still you'll want to do a much more shallow sweep. This is for carving economy as well as keeping your knife edge from rounding over time or even getting small chips in it.
keep it up!!!
I couldn't agree more with your comment. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful knives! I will buy one or maybe more.....😉
Thanks for stopping by, Keelen! I can't wait to watch your review on the Spyderco Puukko.
Roselli raised prices during the COVID-19 emergency. It’s a shame!
Great, comprehensive, well presented review.....thankyou. BTW Do you have any idea what the method for fixing the blade to the handle is? I never heard of anyone having a problem with the blades on these knives 'getting loose', i guess its just a little counter-intuitive if you're accustomed to full tang designs. That said the puukko design has been giving good service to outdoorsmen for a very long time and I guess the scandinavians know a thing or two by now whe it comes to building them right
Nice
I own the carpenters Knife with UHC steel since 6 years. It was a present from my finnsich Grandmother. I can say, that it has very great cutting abilities. The blade can be brought to an extreme level of sharpness and contains the sharpness very long. I have used it the first 2 years as a knife for every purpose. The last 4 years i have only been using it for wood works. It is the best knife for wood works i've ever had (I've had a lot good Knifes). Only the sheath is not good, because after a few years it didn't hold the knife very good anymore.
Just but a little Firesteel (or a piece of fatwood) behind the stitching on the backside of the sheath, so the knife shhould be thight again.
Greetings from Tirol
Can we use firesteel with the edge?
because of the great amount of carbon in the blade.. does this make them brittle?
Thanks for watching!
was that a maxpedition falcon 2 that i spotted?
I'm an old italian hiker and hunter and own a Roselli Carpenter knife from over 50 years. I used it for skinning, making meals carving wood etc. and it never failed me. Today in Italy the only problem is its price: about 150,00 euro. How can this be justified? The steel is worth 5,00 euro maximum and being myself an amateur knifemaker it takes to me about 3 hours to build one sheath enclosed starting from scratch; if properly tooled I could do one in about one hour . Taking into account that in Italy a knifemaker in a Factory costs about 15,00 euro per hour the total cost handmade, leather of the sheath included, is a naximum of 25,00 euros. Besides the quality of manufacturing declined in the years: my own very old Carpenter has a FLAT EDGE perfect for the task of slicing but difficult to grind in my personal experience, while the new ones have SCANDI EDEGE, easier to manufacture but much less efficient in the field. So with less quality of the product and more ease to manufacture, where the 150,00 euros come from!
The sheaths are not cheap. Or cheaply made. Pictures do not do justice. I kinda thought the same way til I bought a couple sometime ago. Very pleased.
Hmm where do I know the music at 5:20 from?
how are the knife laws in germany? can you carry fixed blades and folders? i remember laws were pretty prohibitive in Ireland and England last i visited...
It's my pleasure.
I know this is old, but wonderful review!
Thank you!
In finnish stabbing someone is called puukottaa. So the puukko knives have quite a big influence on finnish people and the language.
I have the carpenter in UHC -i would probably get regular high carbon instead - still a great knife, but ease of dhsrpening is a major concern
At least here in Finland, the notion is that the guard serves no valid purpose. The closer to the blade you can get your hand, the more power and more precision you have in the cut. Very fine work is done between the edge and the thumb and a guard would only get in the way.
Puukkos are some with sticktang or halftang.
Vielen Dank fürs Reinschauen, Tito! - Ich lasse mich bei meinen Videos immer davon leiten, was ich selbst gern über die Messer erfahren würde.
You say ultra high carbon steel . Is this YT or what type ? Ide like to know the name the steel is sold by. RC 64 is very good for a carbon steel. I wonder if this steel is sold in north america and where if you dont mind saying . thanks nice video kellyw
Hellgap50 I'm sure you have lost interest or found the answer yourself by now. But he makes the steel himself and I don't believe he sells it (except in knife blanks)
Yes, but these knives are from Finland. ;-)
Love Roselli knives, but those sheathes looks pretty bad. I more like Finnish traditional sheath or something more like a hunting / bushcraft style. Unfortunately I don't have any of Roselli knives, because they are pretty expensive and hard to get. My dream is two Roselli knives:R120 Grandfather´s knife and R130 Grandmother´s knife and maybe the bearclaw too. They are my all time favorite knives and I hope to get one of them some great day! Thank you Stefan for great video and great knives!
Like your videos a lot. Pro stuff. Heimo Roselli's blanks are my favourite knive making basic elements. You can peek my videos and puukko's here in youtube.
Рукоятки не особо... А вот сталь ультра интересно попробовать....
"... Once the edge is totally dull, you're screwed..." LOL
Car. Bon a petit. You now may it.
Look at my video of a knife for Scandinavian conditions. Making a knife, whittler.
No, it was the Sitka.
Scandi grinds are some of the easiest to install on a blank... Stick tangs are likewise very easy to fix into a wood handle.. What im trying to say here is that these knives are very simple in design, construction, and execution .. Even a novice can assemble a rat tail Mora, Lauri , or Kellam Blank into birch or Micarta block and then shape the handle.. "The Unessential is Detrimental" well i will add that "Tradiionally" these very basic plain Jane Puukko knives were "INEXPENSIVE" ... That knife just isnt handsome enough to warrant paying ten times the price of a Mora Companion ... I mean if "Functionality" is the aesthetic we are going for then a Mora is all we need here... For what these Roselli knives go for they should incorporate thicker blade stock , higher scandi grinds going halfway up the blade in order to maintain a 9dps zero scandi angle, and maybe a bit more attactive handle material .. If you compare this to the look of the old Finnish Hackman Tapio knives or the new Spyderco Puukko it comes in a distant second... And both of those are still "Simple" looking knives..
I love the traditional materials used in the Roselli and I personally despise plastic and other BS materials found in so-called "modern knives". They re usually butt ugly and underperform. I also much prefer the simple lines and proven design of the Roselli. You can have the "modern" BS many other knives and the materials they use, including their steels.
Hmmm. Carpenter or hunter ?
Actually the definition of puukko is nowhere that strict. Despite what some knife "experts" mights say, since people like that want to categorize things. A puukko is actually any general purpose knife, that could reasonably be used for woodwork or closely resembles a knife like that. The word roughly translates as "woodtool". It doesn't even have to be a Finnish knife to be a puukko.
Even a seax is called väkipuukko = "powerknife". And for example, where I'm from, people call the totally tang-less carpet knives mattopuukko.
The generic word for a knife in Finnish is veitsi. That's used for knifes like butter-knives, kitchen knives, hunting knifes etc. But even if you said:"I need a puukko", someone could hand you a bread knife for example.
on the sharpmaker? dear god, no. you'd put a secondary bevel on that, and with these you would not want that
The Laws of physics apply to everybody or they don't apply at all
it's pretty much the notion here in Norway as well. it's useless, so the only person that would use one, is someone that doesn't know how to use a knife. that's at least how the traditionalists feel.
I once did a video on this topic: watch?v=ize2KmNvWZQ
That UHC steel is useless! If you hit a bone, you get chips in the edge, and after one deer you get serrated edge what isn't sharp and you cant get rid of serrations just by sharpening on stone! So to me this hunter now is a wall hanger! Carpenter is great knife, really recommend to anyone who wants to have a good medium sized knife for cooking, bushcrafting, any camp job.... of course its not good for splitting some logs, but for those you better have some large and heavy leuku! Any way great review!
get a work sharp sharpener... and the sharpening will be a piece of cake!!!
Thank you!
Thank you!
