- I always wanted to get a Puukko and I was in a perfect country to get one for myself. Those knives were all beautiful and I had a hard time to pick one. However, I couldn’t be happier choosing this beautiful Puukko :)
The store was Kärkkäinen in Oulu.

LOL "I hope I don't seem crazy" :D
Trust me, in Finland you will never seem crazy for admiring knifes. This was very fun to watch.
Hi Jeffthermite! It's good to know that I wasn't a crazy one.lol
Thank you for watching :)
I’m jealous. That was a great store and a wonderful selection of knives. Thank you for sharing.
I'd be broke 20 minutes after being in that store.
Hue Janus! I totally understand!lol
My wife wouldn't even let me go into that shop... ;-)
Lol,me too,so many an the beautiful craftsmanship.
The first knife's price tag was 16 euros, which is like $17. That's pretty cheap...
Me too, and i am from finland and have plenty of those knifes already. You can never have enough of them haha
I would be like a kid in a sweet shop,so many beautiful knives.
Hi Leslie! I totally was like a kid excited too much at the knife shop!lol They were beautiful well made knives.
I love your videos. The Finnish puukko is a tool, but also a handmade artwork. Knive like objects have been used since the Stone Age. The oldest tool in Finland that looked like a puukko was found in Rovaniemi and it is about 2400 - 2700 years old, but the shape of the hand fit, wooden handle Finnish puukko that we know today, was developed in the Middle Ages, in 1300s. It hasn't changed a lot from those days, because it was and still is perfect for its purpose.
jorluo Hi jorluo! Thank you for watching my videos! Wow, that’s amazing to know that old history about Puukko. It’s fascinating. I love using my Puukko which is small but gets the job done :)
@@uemaisadventure Thanks for your answer. Your puukko is beautiful. I'm looking forward to your next video.
Speaking about history, there are two amazing books written by Anssi Ruusuvuori: Puukon historia, parts 1 and 2 (History of the Puukko). Both over 700 pages full of great pictures of puukkos and sheaths and puukko belts. I would like to buy them but they are quite expensive. I could spend hours and hours watching those thousands of pictures. I know you would also love those books.
If you go to UA-cam (well... heh, you're now in UA-cam) and write: Puukon historia book, there is a video by James Parus who is introducing those books in english. Just look at those pictures. Sorry, I'm drooling :)
👌👊👍🤝🔪

Hello, thank you for having shared this moment. To spend time in a knives shop to choose a knive is so nice for people who like these tools, especialy when it's in the country where typical knives are made. I would love to go in Norway, Finland and Japan, just to do knive shopping. It's so cute to see the plaisir you feel in there.
Thank you for taking the time to record and upload your experience!
I've always wondered what the retail experience was like in Finland/Lapland when shopping for such tradition items as puukos and kuksas - and there they were, just hanging on shelves waiting to be bought. 😄
I remember when I went to Finland my family had to drag me out of such a shop after I spent over 250€ on two knives and was looking at a 3rd knife and an axe (I got a pukko & a Leuku btw)
Shopping never ends in Finland. You’d need someone to stop you.lol
The variety is amazing , enjoyed the process of illumination thanks for sharing and congrats!!
Hi Nathan! It was overwhelming but so much fun at the same time choosing a knife for myself. Thank you for watching the video :)
Thank you for visiting finland I'm greatfull
It’s definitely one of my favorite places.
I love this girl know knives and has a great deal of taste 💕
Wow what an amazing store. Never been to a sportsman store like that I am jealous but happy to see you enjoy!
It was a paradise :)
That's shop was awesome!!!
coop cooper I agree!!! :)
If I was brought into this store- I’d never see any more of the county!
That is a quite typical Hardware-store, 13 on a dozen .......................
If you ever get a puukko as a gift from a finnish person, you'll know you are their good friend and that they respect you.
Oscar Gold Hi Oscar! That’s interesting! It shows the value of Puukko to Finnish people.
Part of the tradition is, if you receive a knife as a gift, you must give a coin in return (any coin will do). This is so that the knife does not "cut" the friendship. A very old tradition.
Yes, never gift a knife, always sell very cheap
camping buddy that’s a French tradition not Finnish
That’s what I was told when I bought my laguiole at any rate.
Fun fact.
That shop isn't even a knife shop.
It's just a shop that has a lot of different things.
Well there are guns behind the counter, those aren't knives...
Fun fact: the workers just wanted her to leave.
Looks kinda like a Finnish Cabela's
WOW looks like a treasure trove of a shop! Thanks for showing!
It was! Thank you for watching :)
Thank you Madame for sharing, it's my dream shop, i think that i would have taken all my economies to go there. Japan and Finland, 2 countries of blades tradition.👍🤗
Really cool vid! Thanks for sharing.
Wow look at all those cool things
This reminds me of the time i was in Norway. I ask the store keeper what is a great item to buy made in Norway. And he said HELLE knives. I ended up buying two. Take Care!
Living the dream
Great knifes
Very nice store. Wish I could go shopping in one like this
Here in Finland it is also a measure of wo/manhood to make a Puukko by your self. From beginning. Blade, handle and leather holster. Thera are classes in community college to learn to make your own. If you ask, almost everyone here has an own personal Puukko.
Mauri Kuisma wow! That’s cool. Never know about that.
That's cool!
Such a cherished tradition that is! What a treasure: your own self- made knife!
Yes in finland we make own puukkos in school metal work i have not yet but i will
I have old marttiini finland 508
I find that, when faced with 2 or 3 options that seem just right, it’s often best to get all 3. Or 2. Just in case. You have to factor in the mood you were in at the time. And really, you just can’t have too many knives. (Of course I don’t know what these things will set you back) Thanks for posting. Cool vid.
I do the same when reading the menu at a new restaurant
Only place to buy real "puukko" is in Finland. I'm happy to hear that we could contribute this word for the global vocabulary!
Wowowowowowow!!!! That‘s my shop! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Martin H whats the name of your shop? What city?
I bought my "puukko" in Kiuna, sweden. made by Per-ola Jönestal, google his work! not the fanciest of his works (paid like 183 eur, which is crazy for what i got) but incredibly beautiful, half horn knife. has been with me for 6 years now from 35 plus celsius in swedish lapland to negative 26 with 24m/s winds. I love it! I love that when you find a knife that fits you and your hand you're sort of bonded with it! nice shopping!
also the Karesuando you bought named "Giron" means Ptarmigan in Sami!
This was really interesting to see. I was feeling almost giddy with excitement to watch you try and feel them through. Personally I feel like that is the way you should pick puukko.
I was curious to see what you would pick, and I was slightly surprised about the one you got. Then I realised you might have smaller hands than I do, so you might end up with that one.
Glad you made a good decision an got to choose the one thst you liked, can't wait to see you test it out in a video.
Hi Kenny! I'm very happy with choosing the knife. It's been my go to knife. Thank you for watching :)
@@uemaisadventure ,how can I find the stainless version, do I need to type it in,I mean either is fine.ive just never used this site before
Kenny Wheelus I’ve never used the website either so I’m not sure. Maybe you can go to the manufacture’s website if you want a specific model.
Old general rule when choosing a general purpose puukko is that the blade is as long as your palm is wide. That's the reason why so many traditional puukkos have about 100mm blade since that is pretty much avarage of mans palm width. I have found that it has the advantage of having as long blade that you can have and still have control for finer tasks especially when you hold that knife with the spine of the blade resting on your palm or more precisely on your fingers.
It's good to know when I choose one next time! Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
Good answer. If you want to chop stuff that's another tool. About 4 inches is fine for just about everything. And these guys have a perfect edge and will keep it, with a little attention.
Puukko is No.1 for me!!!!
That shop looks awesome! The ones in my area have gas station trash knives everywhere
Someone savy could get a big following by visiting knifeshops around the world. Nice work. Maybe you'll inspire someone. 👍
guys could learn so much from your knife shopping, going for the one that fits the best and not the coolest and most macho.
Seeing those Roselli hatchets hanging on the rack makes my mouth watery.
The puukko is very versatile tool and the finnish are used to have scandi grind because its usefull in every task that you might encounter in the woods, but its not the best suited tool for many tasks. Ive grown upp with scandi grinded puukko but now I prefer a full flat grind and a knife with a little bit "belly"....any how congrats to a beautifull knife !
Tools for the right job. But these are just a thing of..beauty. keep a rough tool for heavy work but if you want a beautiful knife to do a perfect job,..hell I have home made knives, made out of saw blades, that work every day. But..
Many great knives the Swedish karensando's are wonderful one of my favorite knives Ive made was with a Karensando blade . The UHC rossile knives I hear wonderful things about, UHC Rossile Hunter should be in my mailbox very shortly. I'm not sure cuz I didn't see the whole video but I didn't notice any Jarvenpaa or Mountain jewel knives great knives from Finland
Holly molly, i'll end up spend my life saving if i ever go to that store
Good choice. By the way, gīron means ptarmigan, a type of grouse, in Northern Sami.
Hi! Thank you for watching my video and the information! I like the knife even more now knowing the meaning of the name. Thank you🙏🏼
Lovely knives!👍🔪💖
They really were!
Hello from Czech Republic, Nice shop.
Knife salesmen reeeeally LOVE when people touch the blades with their bare fingers.
Thank the Finn's for my Jaakaripuukko. I trust the Finn's over all others when I need a knife.
Sheeesh here in the states you're lucky to find any store with quality knives to choose from. We have Sportsman Warehouse in my area which has the best selection but almost no Scandinavian knives.
The market is here but it's ignored ... In Oregon we have tons of hunters and fishing and a store like this would do well .
There are some, but they are marketed very poorly. Rapala imports marttiini knives as fishing knives. Fiskars knives are common as well. My best finds are usually in the used bins at flea markets or at estate sales. 10 minutes of polishing and another 10 of sharpening and I have a VERY good knife. 👍
@@DamonKirry totally agree.. I found one of my favorite little blades that way . She got rehandled and a new sheath.

Excelent knives

Kiitos, että jaoit tämän
Just curious because I don’t think you mentioned it and I did try to freeze a couple frames to try and figure it out, but what model did you buy? I have been looking at a few models and I think the one you bought might work for me as well. New sub here so I’ll have to watch a lot more of your videos! I have a pretty good collection of hand made custom knives so these are totally awesome! 😁
I think it's Karesuando Winter Giron or just Karesuando Giron, Karesuando is a Swedish manufacturer. 👍
I probably empty my pocket and get out of the door with a luggage full of knives . I will remember if I ever go to Finland, I will definitely pay a visit 👍
Everyone should carry a few of these.

YOU GUYS should transport the store to Kitchener
SO MUCH WANT!
I know! It was overwhelming!
Cool shop and video ! Which wood is at the handle of the knife that you buy ?
Hi UNA workshop! It’s birch burl :)
@@uemaisadventure I would correct you a little bit if you don´t mind. That is curly birch what you have as handle on that puukko. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curly_birch
You find better pictures from Google if you use "visakoivu" as search word.
It has gone few months now when you bought that puukko. Have you tried that yet and what do think abot it? If you go back to 60th or 70th the one thing what was essential to Finnish people when they went out to wilderness was puukko. That was our universal tool on forest for food, shelter and normal life. That has been also the last weapon on war time. From that era when Finland was part of Sweden and all the way to WW 2. Puukko is something where Finnish people have faith in when it goes tight. I hope that I could tell to you why we have so high trust on puukko. I personly admire Japanese blacksmiths skills and all those different edged weapons what they make. I hope that your puukko serve you well and you find it helpfull. Greetings from Finland.
I wish I could wander around that store. But like others have said, I would also go broke!
Hello,
Please could you tell me the name of the shop where you bought the puukko in this video.
I will be travelling to Finland soon, and I want to visit it. Thank you.

Guillermo
I want to visit this store.
nice! what was the name of the knife you chose in the end, do you know? I can't quite catch it from the video. I am looking for something similar.
Hi snusmumriken232! It’s called “Giron“ from Karesuando. They have beautiful knives :)
@@uemaisadventure cool! thanks for the reply.
I want a store that sells that selection of Scandinavian knifes in USA. I prefer to hold a knife in my hand before I buy as apposed to the Amazon way.
I always "feel" the puukko Before I buy one, if it doesn`t "feel right" it`s not good (for me). Ralf Finland ......................
Yeah I feel you b there, that'd be great, I wished smokey mountain knife works was closer to me here, but it's in Sevierville Tennessee, I like holding knives before I buy to check for hot spots an see if it's for me or not.

Puukos are great. They seemed helpful. You don't get that kind of selection of puukos in the States.
Just a thought. If any ladies thought this was painful, watching her choose a knife, well that's what it is like going shoe shopping with the wife
Hi Howard! Yes, they are. It was overwhelming to see that many puukos! I loved it tho :)
I totally understand what you are saying. lol
UEMAI's Adventure where was this store? What store was it as I’m going to Finland aswell
Why would any women who don't like knives click on this lol. Just a thought, maybe going shopping with the missus would be less painful if you made a effort to interact and learn about things she enjoys rather than dismissing it outright ;)
UEMAI's Adventure - what model of knife did you buy?
It’s called Giron.

Puukko is best knife in the world.
Hi Kari! I believe it!
Excelente dónde puedo adquirirlos en argentina
Mora knives of Finland are very sharp, shiny and very light & seems they have the same shape on all of their blades!
Mora is swedish company/town, good user knives but imo lack "authentic" feel to them because of the plastic etc..
@@BasedForever0 don't talk shit boi!! Mora knives have a excellent quality/price ratio, one of the best! How ever a Finnish puukko typically made out of 80crV2 (Laurin metalli) with nice birch or leather handle is a better and nicer knife/puukko. But usually a lot more expensive, a knife you wouldn't want to take to a construction site. And puukko/scandi style knife most likely originates from Finland but it's such an old invention it's hard to pinpoint where it truly comes from and what influences it had to evolve into it's current form.
@@Oozy9Millimeetah Found the swede. Moras absolutely suck, you can't even sharpen them properly after they have worn out. The fact is that they are a COPY!
And what the hell do you know what metal Puukkos are made from? Did you even know that they centuries if not millennias old Finno-Ugric design. They are not a "brand" or anything with a set type of steel.
"But usually a lot morre expensive, a knife you wouldn't want to take to a construction site."
First of all, if the Puukko is made properly then you can take them to a construction site. If it breaks or gets damages then the problem is with the user, not the Puukko.
"And puukko/scandi style knife most likely originates from Finland but it's such an old invention it's hard to pinpoint where it truly comes from and what influences it had to evolve into it's current form."
That is completely, naive bullshit. Most Finno-Ugric peoples have Puukko knives and Puukko-style knives. So we can say for a fact that it is a Finno-Ugric design and always have been. Before that cheap shit copycat called "Mora" the only similar knives the Scanditrash had was the Seax and it is far from a proper Puukko.
@@BasedForever0 you should take a look what most puukko's looked like pre-factory mass manufacturing era looked like, the current look of puukko formed in the 1920's when Marttiini started to make puukko's on a "industrial" scale, prior to that most puukko's where rather primitive looking, Finno-ugric people's like other Eurasian people have very little of written down history and culture, they say that puukko has had it current form since the 1300's but there is not quite much evidence to back that up. I bet your "authority" on puukko's come just from being from Finland and you couldn't get a hair shaving edge on your puukko if your life depended on it, i can put a hair whittling edge on a puukko and Mora, doesn't matter if it's stainless or carbon steel.
Do they have an online store... I could spend so much there...
I'm not sure but It was Kärkkäinen in Oulu.
America has precisely *fuck-all* stores like this, and yet we absolutely need them.
The finnish puukko's are the best
They are pretty amazing!
The long bladed knifes are for sticking a man into a wall while you get the axe
