    I can testify that I'm a living example of someone who had a bad time with my birth name. Went for 14 months without a job and barely any interviews (even though I had a 1st Hons BA) and when I changed my name so that it was fully English and Christian (and excluded race from my resume), my hit rate for interviews magically went up.

    I like the implicit bias experiment. As mentioned, it is impossible to get rid of it but that makes it even more important for us to be aware of it so that when we are going to make important decisions, we take extra effort to circumvent it.
    For example if you are interviewing two candidates for a particular role, you could write down the strengths and areas of concerns for each candidate. Then base your discussions on these traits that are written down to take the attention away from impressions made while reminding yourself to only focus on what is written down.

    coming to the conclusion, through these research and tests, that it is racism is overly simplistic and i think, lazy. Perception is caused by various factors, one being the repetitive traits of a particular race for example. Those traits then become stereotypes which could then determine a race’s employability for that matter. In order to break that, the race in question should break those stereotypes. I’m indian, but i learnt at a young age to break away and form my own identity that would fall less within the stereotypes of my race. The result is that I actually command that’s respectable to my experience and value.

    the answer is actually in Islam.

    you will never find a practicing Muslim, a racist.
    { Note: not Muslim by name, but by practice. Islam categorically condemns racism.}
    People who are racist tend NOT to have a religion. or if they do have a religion, that religion of theirs does not condemn racism.
    Singapore still has racism. But its subtle - but still, dangerous. Its the reason why people of different race have superficial relationship when they interact with those of different race.

Nobody dares to critique those who profit off exploitation, war, speculation... in short structural or systemic problems with our political-economy. But we are more than willing to individualize crime, to point at the "soul" - as inborn/innate and blame individuals who fight amongst themselves over race, religion, language, etc. The real divide and cause of societal ills such as crime, is NOT petty anomic violence nor "unsound morals" but the violence that is done by the system against the people who fight hard to play by its rules because there is NO imaginable alternative to be excluded from an unjust system that presents itself as "fair" and "meritocratic". Majority of the companies operating in Singapore and contributing to the country's workforce are owned by local Singaporean Chinese. This is the issue being highlighted by Mr Janil in the video. The local Singaporean Chinese companies consist of many Chinese people holding important position. If it is true, then Singaporeans of other races such as the Malays and Indians should highlight this matter to TAFEP for further inquiry and actions taken against these companies.
      For MNC, those companies are mostly American or British owned. But their top positions are held by Indians, African American or other Asian ethnicity. At least they are not as bias as our local Singaporean companies who only prefer to hire Chinese for their management positions.

Meaning upon their first conviction, they will no longer have voting rights, no welfare support from the Government or any communities, no subsidies, not authorized to obtain an international passport, ineligible to purchase a property in Singapore.
      If they repeated the same offence again and get second conviction, then their Singaporean status should be revoked and consider stateless. Just because there are more police reports/investigations, it doesnt necessarily follow that racism has increased. It could be other confounding factors like increased awareness, decreased tolerance towards racism, increased frivolity of complaints etc. Alternative reasons are myriad. To therefore assert that there's a cause & effect relation between increased police activity and increased racism is an overly simplistic non-sequitur.
    The studies mentioned/carried out in this video:
    171 chinese subjects (majority race) : salary discrepancy $100
    15 sporean subjects (assorted races) : salary discrepancy >$200
    All it suggests is that the non-chinese races may be even more prejudiced against their own kind
    Lol 😂 what sort of pseudo science experiment is this?

    would a Person of X race be also racist be against Their own X race? Eg if the person hiring is of X race and the candidates are X, Y & Z race and their qualifications are all the same , who would the hirer of X race choose? X, Y or Z

      As a Chinese Singaporean myself who owns a recruitment agency outsourcing manpower to local companies, I would say that even if you are an Indian or a Malay candidate who spoke fluently in Mandarin or other Chinese dialects, the interviewers would gave excuses saying that the Chinese elderly or customers would prefer to liaise / communicate with a person coming from the same race. They just wanted to hire a Chinese looking person that matches the race description in their NRIC. In this current generation, there are many minorities in Singapore who spoke better Mandarin than some of our own Chinese people. We have seen the increase of Indians professionals who used Mandarin as their primary language at seminars, business conferences and university lectures. The issues here now is that the "Mandarin language requirement" used by Singaporean Chinese employers is just similar to a cloaking entity design to hide their actual racism behind it.

      Make it a mandatory law for every single companies in Singapore to have an interview panel consisting of 3 different races interviewers. This is to prevent favoritism, racism or racial profiling. Chinese interviewer either hired a Malay or Indian candidate, Malay interviewer hired Chinese or Indian candidate, and Indian interviewer hired Malay or Chinese candidate.
      This is done in the UK by a manpower and consulting company named PwC. There is no such thing as same race must hire same race. If we don't prevent such practice from taking place in every job interviews, then the we are only enabling the interviewers / employers to disrespect minorities even if they have similar or even better qualifications than the Chinese candidates.

    Is it a bias if their actions support the fact? People judge someone by their actions. Like in the US, (just an example), if crime statistics weren't dominated by black people, would people think black people are prone to commit crimes?

      @nematoadss 2 роки тому +1

      Think about it... If someone doesn't get hired, they would be more predisposed to crime. It becomes a vicious cycle. Those who get out of the cycle despite their lower starting point (due to the non-hiring, generations get affected again and again due to lack of opportunities, low education) would definitely not be predisposed to crime.

    Before we even want to discuss and argue about discrimination, racism. Please consider removing the ban on the unvaccinated from public libraries, cinemas/theatres, gyms, shopping malls,etc.
