At 33:31 right as you're wondering how to connect the paths, people off to the left are doing the exact thing you're wondering about so it's already connected at some points it seems
It looks like the path needs to match the road height.
Yeah, as long as the path is right up against the road, a connection is automatic. Not sure how Biffa missed the people crossing over right in front of him as he talked about it 😂
Just make paralel nods on path and road and set them on same hights
yes
@@squallloire The person he was looking at even walked over there, and crossed on to the path.
A pedestrian bridge across the canal between the station and the new development would encourage transit use and add the additional node to get on and off the path on both sides. Plus, there were quite a few of these in the google earth flyover.
Yes! And if I was living there, I would be annoyed if the city didn't put one!
I love the new area. It would be great to have a footbridge over to the train station to connect the new and old areas. I imagine the area is one of those urban regeneration projects where the developers had to pay for area improvements and chose a horrid modern bridge to “ease congestion”
I agree! Supposing the train station was operational when the mill was still an industrial area the workers would have needed a bridge. If biffa decides to put a modern one in you'd be able to chuck it up to a renovation.
Agree! It desperately needs that footbridge to the train station.
A pedestrian bridge would be great.
Agreed, I came here to say the same thing. Maybe a tunnel if a bridge is too intrusive
Hey Biffa, I think it would totally make sense to put a lock (if such an asset exists) as a transition from the canal to the downhill river bed !
And some narrowboats
If biffa was going to make a lock he must have look at Fort Augustus in Scotland which is build around a couple locks.
Or an old water mill that has the side wheel
Yes, this.
(And also, as I lived in Ancoats, cobble streets! Ancoats is cobbled (trust me, the sleepless nights when I first moved, especially when Sankey's existed which was a super popular nightclub with lots of taxis back and forth, the brr-rrr-rrr-rrr of tyres against cobbles is etched into the deepest realms of my memories, and nightmares).
Beautiful build, Biffa! I actually have this in my CWC set, too and was playing with it the other day. It's going to be interesting to see how different our builds are!
Regarding the paths, could you add a crossing in Node Controller? Not sure if that would work or not.
Using the standard path should work
It is the only path that connects to other paths on its side
I thought this asset pack would make a good prison complex.
@@IkLms11 I think that was Flabaliki? 🤔
@@Thumper770 There are Victorian prisons like this made out of granite. Putting these assets in granite grey would be perfect!
@@edwardmiessner6502 I just thought they resembled some of the prisons here in the states like Sing Sing and Attica.
Back when these mills were built the owners often built small areas for their workers to live. Often rows of streets of streets with identical houses. And some awesome sons of guns actually built parks for their workers. Looking at you Rowntree in York! Could be an authentic inclusion behind the mill perhaps?
...And a few pubs for union meetings thrown in. Not built by the employer of course :D
Exactly what I was thinking. The terraces in Blightea were clearly built to serve a large mill or pit on the site that is now The Wave. Kettling now has the mill, so it now needs some terraces for the workers. Make sure to leave some gaps where slum clearance was started by the council, before campaigners & locals got together to stop it.
Small suggestion: You could rename Upper Teahampton Hub to Upper Teahampton Parkway. Seems like a parkway / park and ride station based on its position and bus links.
As this is a converted factory, wouldn’t it make loads of sense to have loads and loads of terraced housing around it. Which would have been where all the factory workers lived? Otherwise it just looks like those holdings have been purposely built. Love the channel, keep up the good work!
This looks absolutely GORGEOUS !! So excited to see what’s gonna happen next.
Biffa was talking about adding a University a few episodes ago and has been looking for a spot to place it and a few mods to make it more British … but I believe this would be the perfect place to add the university… because it is more built up and industrial and I think it would look awesome there …
You could even call it Kettling UniversiTea
I agree! also, this build really reminds me of the University of Sheffield, kinda the same vibes.
Yes. If you'd build the university in somewhat the same style that would look cool
I think this should be called "Kettling Square", and a pedestrian foot bridge over the canal from the new square to the train station would be a nice touch :)
The new area kinda looks like the naturally generated factories.
There is a restored version on the workshop that is very good for tourism. I quite like that building though it rarely fits in with anything I build because it is so big.
Snozzberries taste like snozzberries?
@@tbwrench The restored version could be used to construct a history of industry museum!
Love how the assets blended in with each other. You’re probably going to need a lot more parking as all the internal roads have no parking so some cims will have to park miles away. A footbridge across the canal would look awesome too
Manchester is a great city to reference, especially when it comes to mixing old and new architecture for the UK. There are so many mills in my hometown and great to see you using them, certainly not something that ever occurred to me when playing cities
as long as the path is right next to the road with nothing separating including height differences it will be fine, so you do have to adjust the height of the path to the height of the road.
In my old home town of Sleaford is a building that looked very similar to the industrial buildings you've been placing, it was called Bass Maltings, so maybe the area could be called Blighty Maltings
Or "The Maltings"?
Malt is also a hot beverage ie ovaltine
What an awesome build this was. I have a tip for the great Biffa, whenever I build a large residential block I add a temporary transit line to that block (usually bus as its easier) from any intercity terminal/station to the location. I believe it helps a lot with the incoming citizens.
Disaster Response Unit could go bay the transport hub since that has a more modern look.
There's a bunch of invisible paths. They work great for placing trails and that in park areas. I think that's what you're looking for.
I'm glad you liked the mills I mentioned in a comment on your last video. I'm afraid the comment I made got zapped by UA-cam because of the URL link to the Steam workshop.
As I said, they're similar to the ones found across the pond. Samuel Slater came from England and took the idea for the first mills like this in America which was built in Slatersville, Rhode Island which isn't far from where these are located in Providence. Today, most of the mills are used for light manufacturing, loft apartments, condos, and fancy shops. The original 1803 mill by John and Samuel Slater is now housing and looks similar to the greyish mills you used.
The streets are angled on those mill buildings because there were once railway lines servicing the various mills and brought goods in and out of the mill yards. In Lowell and Lawrence, the railroad ran parallel to the power canals. Today, outside of the branch in Lowell, the lines are abandoned since there's no longer any business in the mills.
Lowell Massachusetts, another one of the planned mill cities in the region, has an extensive power canal system and there's a national park associated with the mill operations, housing, and even a working spinning mill to show how the operation worked. To visit the exhibits, a former railroad branch is now operated by a vintage trolley system. This small branch has become a regular tram route within the city for the residents which now serves not only the downtown area but also University of Massachusetts, Lowell, the ballpark and an arena.
33:33 as you're contemplating how the people can get to the path, they're doing so on the left of the screen. Looks like the path and street just need to be a pixel or 2 closer.
Also, can I suggest a path across the river between the new mill complex and the train station?
it rather seems to be a hight thing because when the hight of the path and the street match they just cross over onto the path
This is a great new area! Please give them a pedestrian/bike bridge to get over to the train station - it would be cool if it actually started from inside the area, and went over the road too!
Actually, I think the pedestrians can walk across that barrier from sidewalk to path if they're the same height - at 32:53 if you look next to the red car parked on the road you can see them doing it :) Something else you could do is maybe create some pedestrians bridges across the river from the mill to the town area? Gives access to shops and the train station. And I can just see river barges going up and down that canal..
This looks ace! has a proper northern feel to it! Depending on the location of the mill (many will have been knocked down in the city centres), terraced houses will be surrounding it which will have served the workers. A wharf off the river is also a cool idea.
lmao i didn't expect you to start off this episode with an aerial view of my old youth group's building! first time ive ever heard anyone describe ancoats as brilliant haha. honestly manchester's architecture is very cool we've got loads of old converted mills and factories along the canals that run in & out of town.
love the way this city's coming along, it's looking really nice
Love the new residential area, reminds me of some of those Terrance Houses in Scotland
Funny you say that, I thought barlinnie or peterhead jails for the 3rd block he built
Hey Biffa! I’m 100% sure there’s an invisible path for people to walk along with, and you can even pick up invisible spots of interest if you have custom assets that don’t actually really interact with people. Looks great! Love it!
There is an invisible path. FewCandy has used them in her city builds
@33:26 on the left of the frame you'll see people joining the path. Far as I'm aware, it's just got to be close like that and they'll walk to it and use it 😁 also I've not seen a typical NCP multistorey yet 👀
It’s always nice to learn a new technique. I’ve used RICO to convert unique buildings into functional ones. E.g. the shopping mall into a high density commercial but hadn’t thought of swapping industrial to homes. Thanks for the tip.
This area is almost perfect! Just needs an iconic stadium 🏟 in it! The emirates stadium or white hart lane (if you can find them) would be perfect as they are next to residential irl .
The factory build is my favorite in this city, so far. I like those old, repurposed factory complexes in real life, so seeing it in-game is awesome. I hadn't thought of trying to build one.
Love a Roman section on this map, lots of old straight roads with a modern town/city built around it
Damn, what an epic build! I think East Kettling needs some more of the mill sized buildings. The little commercial block near the station isn't enough, definitely not for the size of the station. You'd imagine some pretty fancy buildings along the waterside as it was probably a pretty wealthy town. Could also imagine some sort of docks area where the mills would transport all their products through.
It´s got to be appreciated that one of the first trucks delivering goods to the new factory residental area actually was a tea truck 🤩😊
Fabulous build, Biffa! These kinds of buildings can be seen IRL on the US East Coast all the way from Portland Maine and Concord New Hampshire all the way down to Baltimore and Annapolis Maryland. One tip, though: the houses with the multiple chimneys, dormers, and/or shutters were originally built as residential housing specifically attached posh single family homes. You might want to move the smokestack and the industrial bridge to the more appropriate buildings, the ones without shutters. And your locating residences right next to industrial buildings is genius! 👌 This happened quite a lot during the industrial revolution in the US as residential neighborhoods declined and gradually became industrial, I assume it happened in the UK too.
Used to live near Ancoats. An area like this needs an old victorian style pub. Built for the mill workers back in the day, but now filled with hipsters paying a fortune to eat off a chopping board. A micro-brewery serving the local Blighty brew
Hello Biffa!
I suggest building a pedestrian bridge from the old market station to the mill to connect both sides of the river. Maybe it also connects the path to the road.
0:30 third episode without fix the ped path under the bridge, and counting 😂
Good morning Biffa!
I dont think the path was supposed to go under the bridge but rather go up to it.
@@lejardine you could even see the "blue hell" on the side of the path.
With all your decor there, that's a damn sight posher than Ancoats.
Love the tractors parked in the street - you get a lot of those in Manchester!
(it's a lovely build, I'm not criticising)
maybe you could do a little retirement community with bungalows and cottages up the river called Kettling on the Wold named after the bigger Kettlings?
Also perhaps a bridge across the Woald opposite the station as there's only 1 Bridge to cross the river atm?
I think the awkward triangular piece at the end of your first car park would be perfect for a statue of someone to do with Blightea's industrial revolution, not sure if any such assets exist but that's the sort of thing you's see in these old mill/old industrial areas. Keep it up i love all your city builds!
Just a friendly reminder Biffa, that maybe instead of lifting everything in your new built, you could try just lowering the river. Maybe it helps with that water issue.
Great mill build, I would make it ten times the size, it fits in with the UK. I would also have pedestrian bridges across to the train station
Been mentioned a few times, but there is a very subtle crossing point right near the front end yellow bush triangle that folks can use to cross from the walking path to the street. Something that would also be helpful for pedestrians is a way to cross the river on the path network w/o having to go all the way down to the car bridge. Sure, the AI is willing to walk a long way, but it just makes sense to give a shortcut or two.
For arround 33:00 : I would say a pedestrian bridge over the water, with a crossing at some end of the "not-that-round-but-more-triangle-about" (with or without traffic lights).
Probably a way to connect to the train stations too ? Also the creation of some bus stations near the train station or across the pedestrian bridge could be an option.
Loving the build, it never occurs to me to use Google Earth as a tool to use for inspiration on a build something I will do from now on. One thing I think would make a good addition that every town and city has would be some sort of street market. I do know there are props that can be used but whether or not RICO could turn them into low commercial assets I don't know.
In the vanilla game, i think it came with the parklife dlc, you have an unique building called 'old market street'. Maybe that one?
@@scatmanpro Truthfully I forgot all about that, I remembered there were a couple of street vendor type carts in the prop section but that would be much closer to a proper street market and it would also be able to have it's stats changed with RICO. Many thanks for the reminder.
Akuras does use an invisible path mod. He puts normal paths in so he sees where they're going, then swaps for invisible ones. Great to get people walking wherever you'd like them to walk.
A pedestrian bridge directly in front of the train station would be amazing!
Hi Sire, I think there is a huge opportunity for a triple round about: continue the bridge over the Wold up to the street where the other meets. Then make this a big one way loop. And finalley have a square about down by the river.
I know you don’t want to recreate things perfectly Biffa but showing the inspiration of the Mill could be a really cool way to show your working and to educate American and other nationality viewers about British city design!
Reminds me of an old Oil Mill that was converted to a Hotel & Spa with Sauna and Beach Bar at the Water Front, where I was for holidays. :)
At 32:53 look at the red car on the road. The pedestrians are walking across from street to footpath already without you doing a thing. Think it's due to how close you have them. So if you just move the path or road closer in a few spots this may happen again. Worth a shot then don't have to try and mess with paths
Theres another big building similar to that called Kirkstall brewery in Leeds its looks great!
I love the build, it kinda reminds me of the University of Sheffield, don't know if you've ever been there but that is definitely the vibe I'm getting for some reason
Another very interesting episode! Connecting East an West Kettling with a pedestrian-bridge or -tunnel would solve the problem of getting people to the train-station. You can also build a bus-route from the old mill to the station.
I love this area! As someone who spent many years living in Manchester, I think you've captured the essence of Ancoats and many other parts of Manchester 👏👏👏
It looks amazing! I really like it when you use the english vehicles and buildings, you can just imagine those office with red brick walls and polished wooden floors. Great build
Love the look of this area- maybe a pedestrian bridge across the river from the station building to allow easy access
the trades school sounds like it would fit into this area. if there were factories and mills etc, they'd need somewhere to learn it all
A footbridge across the river to the station would be splendid!
I really enjoy your videos Biffa! I've been watching for several years now! :) I just have a little tip I picked up in a Slay3K video (just a few days ago!). When moving an item with Move It, hold the CTRL key while moving the mouse. Two excellent things happen...first, the blue selection outline disappears from the asset and, second, you get "fine grained" movement so it's infinitely easier to line things up! It's made a huge difference for me...I hope it helps you and others. (I've noticed it's a little quirky with some assets, but overall really helps)
Really good looking industrial residential area!! I would like to suggest that close to the mill would be more terraced houses for the original workers in the mill. I would also like to suggest making a 60s style polytechnic uni around this area as if some industry had been cleared for this in the 60s.
when I saw the roundabout in the building, I thought it was going to be an underground car park, like in many cities that don't have the space for car parks.
At 32:50 it seems like people are already going from the path to the road (to the left of where you wanted to add a path). Great build!
Hey Biffa, really love that old mill. But what about adding some more but slightly different buildings from there up to the junction. Maybe the old building where they had their steam engines and boilers and power plant got converted to some kind of cultural centre. You could combine some old industrial type buildings and maybe shove in a modern museum with move it. Then you could stick the schools and child care right behind it. Maybe there also is room for church? Or we could pretend there is some kind of multi-cultural centre there. I bet this city has seen lots of imigrants over the years too. First maybe from Irleand, later from the commonwealth.
It is definitely looking gorgeous Biffa, I really like the idea of adding the mill employees houses someone else was commenting and agreed you definitely need a bridge across the river, the newer looking the better as it’s all regeneration these days! Centre of Bristol next to the canal has dozens of what is now flats and mad new bridges to get you into the railway station and into Cabot Cirus shopping centre.
The new area looks just stunning.
For aesthetic purposes I'd say to add a bit of track branching off from the mainline as a lot of Mills in the UK had a rail connection for freight delivery, could have that as a nod to the Mill's past
You can use move it to squish the end of the path. If it doesn't look good with that specific path, you can try the one that matches the sidewalks and bring it over the quay. Invisible paths are sometimes very nice to have though, I have 5 in varying sizes. Liking how the new area is going, but I fear some residents will be very upset that parking is so far away!
Oh Biffa, that´s a very beautiful new area you´ve been creating. Probably the best ever....and the kind of buildings look exactly the same like i thought a university would be great. Some old schools, health and deathcare and public transport + pedestrian bridges in the same old style would be great. Love it
The center of the mill could have been a nice little car park for the residents.
Nice build Biffa. Something a little bit different. I'd forgotten I'd got these buildings too, must see if I can do half as good a job as you with them! Love the triangles of planting, they're great. Not sure if the residents would love those massive trees right outside their windows at the back though 🤣 Also, if you watch the vid back from 33:25, you'll see that the peds are swapping from the path on the road to the path by the river on the far left of picture, it's because it touches at that point so they appear to be able to move from one to the other. So, no clever path solution needed.
To make the path connect to the new Mill section, just delete a segment of the path right in front of the Mills. This should allow the civs to walk to the end of the path, then up onto the road at the end of the path segment. Then they can get back on it further down the road where the path starts again :)
Might be worth trying to snake an old abandoned rail line to the back of the converted mill. It would help with the post industrial vibe, and you could even use some of it as a tram line that replaced some of the old track
Those Mills at 2mins.... Called one of them home for a while through the period when most were being redeveloped. Memories...
absolutely fabulously beautiful build. for the pathway.. make a path section raised/bridge go across the road. and hook it up on the other side of the road. also. make a path bridge to the other side of the river and hook it up the same way. (add nodes if necessary)
side note. the trees (not all of them just the ones with the insanly long stems) are nice but too tall. use BOB to adjust stem lenght or use a different tree.
P.s. Gasometer Vienna is same style (formerly used as gas storage in RL) using rico you can change that to whatever you fancy. (in vienna RL they made the Gasometer to Commercial and residential.)
If you ever do a campus, I think it should be the university theme with the building spread throughout a certain area of your city. Maybe take inspiration from the university of Lincoln in the East Midlands (yes, southerners and northerners, the midlands do exist!)😂.
Could hide the disaster response building into a campus-like hospital, similar to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham which is part of the uni. Nottingham offers some really interesting residential area looks, particularly with converter warehouses in the Lace Market.
34:15 if you look at the bottom left corner you can see there's a point somewhere where people are crossing off of the road and onto the sidewalk
Re pedestrians using the path along the river. As you were looking at how to connect it to the road, peds were already able to move across. They were close enough that the paths merged
A very nice build, and very reminiscent of old industrial cities in the UK like Manchester and Derby. Just needs a little bit more concrete surface painter infront of the mills if possible, as the undecorated grass looks a bit off
I’d like to see more residential expansion, with a town centre that has a shopping centre backing off a market street. A very common theme in towns across the UK, wherever you go
32:57, if you noticed, the path did connect to the road right next to where you were trying to place a connection. It appears there are several of those spots along the river, so all is good. Love the mill build, looks great.
@@automation7295 that is not true. In the uk there are many of these long road parallel paths that only have a few connections along it, especially something like this. Sometimes for physical reasons, oftimes just to separate out the walk from the car pollution and noise, with some trees & bushes in between.
At 32:59 when you are asking how to connect the paths, you can see that people are already walking from the path to the pavement in one spot where they meet exactly. I think you might have unfortunately broken that when you made the path and deleted it, but it seems like it could work/was working already if you can get it to match up.
As for the disaster response unit, looks like there are a few models on the workshop that look a bit more neutral - "Urban disaster response unit" or "Disaster response unit 2x2" look like they could fit in somewhere industrial, or the "Disaster response mega center" looks really good and not out of place if it had its own space, a lot of local UK police/fire stations are closing down now and moving to more units like this out in rural areas between two towns or villages.
Pedestrians seemed to have no difficulty crossing from the street sidewalk to the pedestrian path by the river - they were doing it while you were trying to place the path and lower it under the road.
What you're missing here is a direct pedestrian bridge to the train station.
At 33:28, you say “that person here might want to walk along but can’t.” Talking about the path next to the river. But if you watch him, he jumps on it just a little later! That paths should be fine how they are now.
For some reason it looks to me that this would be the style of an entire much bigger district, more like a city centre. Mixed in with a few other buildings. Also the positioning of the mills next to the world makes them seem important.
What a great addition! I just wish there were some more park assets for the citizens in that mill area. Like a playground perhaps?
Try using the node controller to adjust the nodes on the pathways, that should make some connections to the road and maybe add some pavement in front of the houses in the new area so that the residents dont have to walk on grass when they get out of their houses
Im loving this build!! Maybe some paths across the river so the new residents can get to the train station easily
you should add pedestrian bridges across the river
I LOVE IT! I think the new high density blocks in this episode is the nicest looking cities buildings I've seen! I love it when you look at photographs to get inspiration :)
Looks absolutely amazing. And what a great way to introduce high-density in your build... Good call with the dual tower-building in turning it into High-density !
I wouldn't have the patience to play that way, which makes me appreciate it even more.
Great episode, as always! Love how creators take inspiration from one another and from comments to build even more pretty things!
This is my favorite build so far! I'm betting all those people would like some mass transit.
Very cool take on real world items. I live in Peoria IL where we are doing this by taking old mill/industry buildings and converting them into housings
A suggestion. Use trams as public transport in the new area. I think there are a few old school trams on the workshop.
I think the mill build looks great but you just added like what 500 homes or so... so definitely needs a big parking lot... like perhaps the width of the whole thing behind the rear buildings. Just push back the shrub fence and have it be from one corner to the next, see how that looks and if it doesn't seem enough have a 2nd to make it a larger lot or have another on one of the sides or both sides even... a few hundred families need more then 35 or so parking spots.
If you look at 33:27 just to the far left where there is a red VW camper van, a man dressed in black steps from the road path onto the riverbank path. It looks like all you have to do is have the two paths level and people will just walk across.
If you add a lock or some small canals with boats, this could be where they used to unload barges and canal boats, you could call this area Mill Quay as in Mil-ky.
Biffa, I have an idea that might be cool for this build and you playing with the settings gave me an awesome idea so around where I live in Manchester, there are some converted churches that have been renovated into residential buildings. I think playing about with the whole converted building thing could really add to some cool looking places.
It's amazing. 1 season of 1C5B and you've grown your cities 1000%
mills and old factories (when on rivers) tend to have quays and docks. in front of them which would be quite "easy" to put in with Network Rivers. Manchester is a prime example of that
