Wonderful and very useful tutorial - thanks! One tip: rolls can be recorded if Roll Rec is activated (red). It records to the sequencer any notes you trigger also in real time!
Cheers! very helpful. I am used to Tanzbär Lite and Tanzmaus..all similar but prefer Tanzbär way. My Tanzbär arrives today and thanks to you I'll be dancing in no time.
Thank you for this! Just got my Tanzbar and it sounds killer and has such a nice groove. It’s a bit confusing to get started but your videos helped a lot!
Thanks! Sometimes i feared i was going too slow or repeating myself too much, but i guess better like that than the other way around. Sometimes i was also reading back what i had to talk about next, lol.
Glad to have helped. It wasn't a "pro course" but hopefully enough to get people started and understand the basic mechanics in order to move forward. Once you understand most of the tutorial, the manual from MFB will become less confusing i think.
I was about to sell the Bear after i havent really been using it for a year since the manual is really confusing. .. Now i can´t leave it alone no more XD
Hi, great demo.. I have been thinking about buying one of these recently. But one thing really bothers me.. The tempo resetting to 120 every time.. Do you know if the new Tanzmaus has this same issue? Or have they allowed for saving the tempo to each pattern? Have you tried the TanzMaus? Thanks
Thanks. No, i don't own a TanzMaus. If you can control the tempo of the TanzBär with something like a BeatStepPro or a DAW it's not an issue. But maybe you should ask some TanzMaus owners (on youtube). For me personally, the fact that it resets the tempo each time is not the big problem (because like i said, it's the only way to have a reference, due to the lack of an LCD) but the fact that the tempo isn't stored in a pattern is a pitty. Because sometimes the tempo can really be a deciding factor. For instance, there are a couple of factory presets i really disliked, until i started to lower the tempo a lot, and suddenly the pattern "clicked" for me. Chances are this was how the pattern was intended in the first place. And for those (like me) that often start out creating at 120bpm anyway, this is not such a problem. Nevertheless, storing the current tempo in the pattern you're creating, would definitely be a step in the right direction. Maybe they could have included a "tempo reset" option to manually reset it to 120bpm and/or when starting from an empty slot.
Thanks for the tutorial. Very clear and concise. A couple of questions: Is it possible to change the step length for individual instruments? For example, have a 10 step sequence for the maracas while everything else is the full 16. Also, is it possible to change the swing for an individual instrument or is the swing global? Thanks!
You mean like the Arturia? No, i do not believe that is possible on the TanzBär. As for the swing, i have not tried this and there is nothing in the manual about swing quantization, but on their website it says "individual and global swing-quantization", so i guess it should. EDIT: actually, i think in the manual they speak of "shuffle". In which case, yes it is possible per instrument or per track. I just checked it, and i believe this is what you are refering to.
Yes, it's possible. Press Rec/ManTrg + the instrument that you want to change the step length and then press shift + CV1. Lights will start blinking in green showing the step length. Just press the button which you want to be the last one on the sequence and then select to save.
You can adjust the length of each sounds steps so that you can create polyrhythmic sequences, this is discussed in the manul. You can also adjust swing (shuffle) globally or per sound. This is covered in the new version of the manul, it's not perfect, but it's pretty good.
Can we build our own patterns on the Tanzbar (which will have some kick variations for instance) and trigger any of these sequences from our DAW? My concern is that if we build our sequences from the DAW, we might not have the possibility to change some parameters of specific beats like at 05:27. Thanks!
I can't tell you the answer to this, because i have never tried to run it from my DAW. You might find some something useful in my "midi learn" video (ua-cam.com/video/r6XI540n7P0/v-deo.html) for the Tanzbär. It should be possible to link it to other midi devices (or DAWs) like that, but i 'm not confident you can "swap" patterns via midi. You can trigger it to play and change tempo, you can trigger individual drum instruments but i'm not sure about moving through prerecorded patterns, or like you said, control individual parameters per drum instrument. You can also read this www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/921773-mfb-tanzbar-daw-setup.html for guys with a similar problem. You can ofcourse have the DAW trigger the Tanzbär and change the patterns on the tanzbär manually while recording. I think this will be the easiest sollution, even if it's not exactly what you are looking for. I also think that in jam mode, you can change parameters while playing back a pattern. So perhaps that's an option as well to bring some variation while recording. Good luck.
Ok, thanks! This is a serious limitation if you want to play live and are already very occupied with other hardware. The store next door has one in stock. Time for a trial.
Hi there, great video again. thank you.. I did end up buying one.. had it for a few weeks now. I am really enjoying it. Do you know if there is a way to real time record a sequence? like in manual trigger mode, but each instrument press gets added to the sequence (real time) and quantised etc.. do you know what i mean?
I understand what you mean. These tutorials were all made in step mode. In step mode, the only way to do this, to my knowledge, is by using roll record (see another video of mine). You can record rolls... but when you only press an instument for the duration of that 1 step, it will only record one step, resulting in the same as what you are trying to do. So, it's not really what you are looking for, but the result is the same (just don't press and hold, or the roll will start). With the aditional benefit that, if you want to do a roll, you can actually record it while you're at it. What you're looking for specifically, is likely possible in manual or jam mode. But i myself have not programmed in anything other than step mode (i'm coming from a PC DAW background, i'm not a drummer or musician as such). So i can only assume it's possible in one of the other modes, but you could sidestep the issue and use record roll in step mode. As long as you just tap the step you want (and release before the next step occurs), and not hold it (initiating a roll over multiple steps) you basically get the same result. Tip: lower the tempo a bit, it will make it easier to record, you can increase the tempo again once it's done. Tip2: use an external pad (like a cheap controller with pads, such as the Beatstep) to record your real time sequence. I also made a video how to connect the Beatstep to the Tanzbär with the midi learn function.
Hi! Great tutorial, I found it very helpful. However, when I'm de-selecting the steps I want to sculpt separately, then I'm selecting them again, changes are applied to all steps of the current instrument, not only the blinking ones... Any idea why is this happening? I was doing everything exactly like you showed it...

also, once they are set and "locked", I can still tweak them...
Strange. Can you confirm that you are in "step mode"? From what you are saying, it sounds like you are in "manual mode". From the manual: To select the Record Mode of your choice: • Hold Shift + press Step 15 button (CB - Man/Step). The button toggles between: - Manual mode: (LED = green) - Step Mode: (LED = red) - Jam Mode: (LED = orange). • Press the flashing Select button. The selected mode becomes active.

I did exactly how you did it from the beginning, but apparently the mode was wrong. Now it works! Thanks a lot :)
Normally "step mode" is the factory setting, but maybe yours had been used in a store demo, or was returned by someone who couldn't figure out how to get it working ;-) and maybe you got a "slightly used" model? Or maybe you changed it by accident.. Unless they changed the factory setting to have manual mode as default (but i doubt that). Anyway, good that you got it working! Enjoy.
this video has been super useful, thank you so much! I have one question though, if youn't mind: is there a live recording modo, ie. to record steps in the sequence by manually hitting the track triggers live? I couldn't figure it out, even with the manual!
Is there a way to make the loops longer for more variations? Got my tanzbar finally and its amazing :) thanks for your tutorials. Iv been watching them once a day for this to all sink in properly
The loops (patterns) can be 32 steps maximum. For this you need to use the A/B toggle. But you can also chain multiple patterns with the chain function (see the first video).
Hi at the beginning of this video you locked parameters by pressing select whilst the LEDs were flashing, and then re-programmed two of the bass drum steps. This function does not seem to work on my tanzbar at all other than for accents. Once I lock the sounds the knobs still affect all steps whether locked or flashing. Any ideas?
Can you confirm which mode you are working in? Step, Jam or Manual mode? This tutorial is done in Step mode, which is the factory default mode. But i think you may not be working in Step mode. See page 17 of the manual. Manual Mode will not record any sound parameters. These always have to be tweaked manually. Step Mode (factory setting) allows programming of different sound parameter settings per step. Jam Mode is basically the same as Step Mode. In contrast to Step mode, you can alter a parameter value on all steps of an instrument/track ”live“ and simultaneously without changing or leaving the Record mode. In Step mode, you would first have to select all steps with the Select button to perform the same trick. To select the Record Mode of your choice: • Hold Shift + press Step 15 button (CB - Man/Step). The button toggles between: - Manual mode: (LED = green) - Step Mode: (LED = red) - Jam Mode: (LED = orange). • Press the flashing Select button. The selected mode becomes active.
Yes, maybe i'll do a video on it next, but there is already a video on youtube for it i think. And you can also find a written tutorial on gearslutz (do a search on "tanzbär knob record" on google and youtube... the gearslutz topic is called "Tanzbar knob record problem").
Yes, you do this with the A/B toggle. A will be for the first 16 steps, B for the next 16 steps (17-32). If A/B is enabled, you get the full 32 steps. You can also save a 16step pattern to a new (empty) pattern, and edit it to your liking. You can then also chain the patterns together. This way it's also possible to make a 64 step chain, or a 128 step chain even. How to chain patterns i showed in the other video. Personally, i prefer chaining over A/B. Obviously, you can also chain 32 step patterns if you want.
for some reason when i hit select after i apply the effects to the certain drum parts it does not lock them in place. I'm talking about at 4:45.. Ever come across this problem?
Is it a recurring problem, does it occur every time? There are definitely some bugs, both random (like i couldn't save the pattern), and persistently recurring (like the bug in the other video about roll record). But i did not come across your problem myself. There is a guy who responded to the other video, who said some of his problems/bugs were resolved after a factory reset. But that means any pattern you saved, will be gone too (unless you back them up over midi to your computer first).
@@10billionviewsorless42 hi, i got myself a new tanzbar and thank you for the video. i do not have the factory preset patterns and i cannot get in contact with mfb nor are they on the website(as the manuals stated), do you have any clue how to get these and upload them?

I hope this mostly applies to Tanzbar 2 because it is the first basic tutorial I've seen after a week of watching Tanzbars.
thank you so much! only fighting with the mfb manual
Thanks for a great tutorial, better than the manual. good job!
