All of them, and I think it's their special beauty that they can seem so dark / haunting...but Shakespeare is always getting a message about the bright light of human potential across. Look to the fools perspective, try watching them with their eyes. The tragedy is never of the individual but of the society that allowed the conditions which allowed the individual tragedy to occur...unfailing Shakespeare always point out that things don't have to be as they are...the tragedy is no one listens!
Their actions are indeed very dark, but not their fundamental nature. Macbeth kills the king but only at the insistence of Lady M and the witches fate...he is as Lady M says 'too full of the milk of human kindness' to do it without pressing. Othello's tragedy is his circumstance as 'the moor' - an outsider - his crime is a crime of passion / love - it is his noble nature that makes it a tragedy! . Lear fails to see that Cordelia loves him most - because he is blinded by social forms / pretense
simon schama looks terrifying when he talks and doesn't see shakespeare's real brilliance at all, if you pay attention to the plays Shakespeare definitely does not endorse any crap about 'dark truths of human nature' - he is all love light and laughter. unlike this guy
Fascinating - I'd love to see the entire program. Thank you!
