ABOUT ME:
My name is Shelly and I’m a 45-year-old web geek that jumped off the deep end into the makeup and beauty world. I’ve got normal to dry skin (very dry in the winter), fine lines, and hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage. Cameo appearances by my rescue cats Daffy, Polly, Ziva, and Merlin.
Cruelty free and five dollars is definitely a winner for how nicely it held up!

I was so happy to see this video! I just bought the Elf primer and actually liked it a little better, but that’s mostly because I preferred the color. Thanks again for the review! Love seeing your eye looks!
Ok who else was trying to guess when they were applied which was which? I guessed correctly (yay!) bc the Elf side looked a little more emollient and less matte. Definitely going to try this when I can find it in stores on my essential outings.
You helped me pick the right color! The MAC has dried out my lids since my 20s so I've never ridden that hype train. Always wanted an alternative that didn't make my lids look like tree bark.
If you don't mind paying extra, the ABH primer is really good, too.

@@iwillstom SO you have dryer skin, then? I do, and that's why I like it. It's very emollient.
Kimberly Player It’s crazy. My lids are oily but when I put primer on it makes them look dry and flaky instantly. I have never been able to figure out a method that works well.
@@iwillstom Well, I hope the elf one works, if not try getting a ABH mini first. Sephora, ABH and even ULTA has them and sometimes gives them away as gifts.
I could tell the Elf was a little more grabby with color and needed a little more work blending it out. I'll have to check it out, though, because the paint pot is a little too dry on my lids. The Elf even looked slightly more emollient going on. Boo to Ireland being canceled, but we're all in the same boat! I can't wait to travel once we can.
Yep I would say the Elf is a bit more emollient going on. Most days I would set either primer with a flesh toned shadow first anyway, but for testing I like to see how they hold up without being set.

Samantha C I just use my concealer... I miss the old Urban Decay Eye Primer... loved that one.
CoverGirl's Lid Lockup works really well. It leaves a slightly tacky finish so eye shadow stays put for hours. I've had no creasing or caking from it. :)
I have such watery eyes.... thanks, Kansas allergies. I want to try this one.
I may try the Elf as the paint pot is too dark for my super pale skin. I often use the Essence intensifying eye base which works fairly well and cancels out any discolouration on my lids. It's excellent for pale skin, but they do have a darker more yellow based shade also. I thought the Elf side looked pretty good for almost twelve hours and it's well priced, so that's a winner. Love the eye look!!! I agree they are similar. If you've got the budget, you like it, and it outperforms the Elf, go for it. But really, if you don't, that is $15+ to spend somewhere else.

I have mega oily skin and I use the soft ochre shade as eyeshadow base, overall colour correction, nose tip base and spot concealing blemish under the foundation. Xx from Australia

SO weird!! I've moved into a sort of routine and acceptance with this new version of normal, but now I think about what it's going to be like coming out of this and it's almost too big to conceive of. I think about how I've never really lived through wartime that has impacted my daily life or anything like that - this is the big hundred-year-event for most of our generations. Hard to wrap my head around it. The uncertainty is difficult.
Thank you for doing this review! I had been eyeing (haha) the Elf but was skeptical about creasing. I have the same issues as you - veins on eyelids - and I'm about the same age as you, so I get a good idea of how it will perform on someone like me thanks to your review! I really appreciate it and will be trying the Elf primer. I actually slightly preferred the look of the Elf eye compared to the Mac, so bonus!

I kinda knew straight away which was the paint pot due to the coverage (I use the paint pot daily, so might be advantaged in that).
But the price of the Elf is definitely worth at least a try.
I don’t use it as primer though, more like a concealer as I have lots of veins on my eyes, so put that on, eyeliner and mascara and I’m out the door and my eyes look so bright compared to before.
I like that the paint pot doesn’t crease compared to a concealer and it needs no setting either.
Love dupe videos! :-) I've been using Milani's eyeshadow primer for 3 years due to my sensitive eyes. It's creamy and has a light texture which is nice. However, last month I started using CoverGirl's lid lockup and like it too very much. It's more tacky but keeps my eye shadows in tact for hours and nothing creases ever. I have that same, exact headband! :-D

as soon as your applied I knew the nose ring side was the paint pot. The paint pots have lots of pigment to them.
So happy to see you liked it! I really like it, too. I could tell which one was which when you applied. The elf has to be put on with a finger, I think. Otherwise it's kinda grabby.
Have you seen/tried the “revolution pro” potted eye primer? They only have 3 shades, one shimmer and two matte. The reviews are really good, with lots of comparisons to the paint pot. I’m going to try it:) Thanks for the side by side💜
I have one of the matte shades. It’s really slippy in the pot but works so well! It took a little getting used to applying just because the wetter texture than a paint pot. A lot of times, I’ll apply it from the pot with my finger but spread it out with a brush. The times I only used a brush, I was getting way too much product

I quite like the Revolution one... trouble is in the heat here it dries out in the pot and goes a bit weird faster than I'd like... luckily it's not too expensive so buying it regularly is okay. And it's way cheaper than the $38 the Mac one is here.

I think from how your eyes both looked that it did a great job and probably either is better than no primer, which is my current situation 😊 This was so helpful, thank you!!
Glad to help! Eyeshadows tend to wear off quicker and crease on me without primer, and concealers always bunch up when I try to use those as primer. So I'm always using something!

lol I'm the other extreme - I get antsy if I can't use it! I lost it for a few days after unpacking from a trip a while ago and couldn't stand not having it and bought another - and then found the old one before I opened the new one, so at least I have a backup! 😂

I've using the maybelline urbanite as an eye primer. I'll have to try this elf one.
Your shadow techniques have gotten so good. I love that you don't always do the same three-step thing (that I always do 😉)

I’ve been wanting to try both! I go back & forth between primers & concealers. Depends how dry I am (I prefer Colourpop Pretty Fresh hyaluronic creamy concealer when I’m dry.) I’m sorry to hear about your Ireland trip. I guess I’ll just have to go with you! Have a great day doll!

My favorite 2 things about the Paint Pot are how well it evens out the tone of my lids (and cancels out the blue vein that runs right through one of them), and how long it holds eyeshadow for. I wish it was cruelty free (which is why I haven't gotten more into the MAC brand - I am not fully cruelty free in my beauty products but I do try to avoid getting into new-to-me brands that aren't cruelty free). The Elf is a pretty doggone good dupe performance wise but I still favor the MAC a bit.

Oooh I was wondering about this. The price difference here (elf $12 vs mac $38) makes it well worth trying if it's any way remotely decent. Revolution do something similar, but it doesn't last well - at least in the hot weather here (in the pot I mean, it dries out and goes funny a little too quickly - I do like it though, just have to buy it regularly... lucky it's fairly cheap).

Thanks, Eileen! I think I'll always be a Paint Pot kind of girl but it's nice to have options! And I usually prefer to travel with less expensive makeup in case it gets damaged or lost, so I can totally see the Elf being my travel go-to.... if I ever travel again! 😩

Hey Shelly! Randomly, do you like the Milani Prep Set and Glow translucent powder? I know you’ve used it before, but is it as pretty as people say? 🤔
It's very pretty :) I like the Charlotte Tilbury more (rarely but every so often, the Milani will look a bit cakey with certain foundations, and I can't figure out what the pattern is, where the CT doesn't do that) - but of course the Milani is far, far less expensive than the CT so I'm willing to tolerate an occasional stumble!

Hi Jacque! I don't think I've tried the Nyx Proof It- I'll add it to my list to find!
It will last all day. But it's hard to remove.

I'd say like the MAC it's just a smidge darker than my skin, enough that I can wear it bare with no shadow and most people would not notice any color, but it's almost like a tiny bit of zhuzh for the lids, the way a little swipe of blush would be on the cheeks. Not noticeable but better than bare.

Hi Denise! Those "makeup and chill" videos are extra content (they're my 4th video per week). I'll still be posting 3 videos per week of regular reviews as usual, with foundation always on Fridays. In the case of this one, I included the eye look so you could see how the two perform side by side, so it's coincidence that it's a similar format. I hadn't done music in my videos for a while, and a lot of people enjoy it, so I try to do some of both!
Get rid of the music. It’s garbage and distracting. Dislike because of it.
