Saber de tu cultura y de tu pasado, y sentirce orgulloso de tus raices, no te hace menos Americano. A lot of the European descendents don't know anything about their European culture and background and don't have something to feel connected to. I believe this is why a lot of them hate and don't like when people know where they come from and celebrate their culture.

Many Spaniard’s arrived in PR when Spain occupied the island. Many identify as Castilian. But don’t get me started, they have their own traditions and most are fair-skinned. Many of the old time Spanish-influenced cafes in the San Juan area (Kasalta plus La Ceiba, España if they’re still in existence) were started by Castilians. They even have their own flag (it’s red) and I last saw one flown above the hardware store in Old San Juan, though I think they’ve closed.

My dad is your typical white man of Western European descent. Mostly German, Irish, and English. I've struggled with my Puerto Rican identity too. Most people say I'm too white to be Puerto Rican, even though I'm only one generation removed from being Puerto Rican on my mom's side. I have jibaro blood in my veins. I can speak Spanish decently, I love all the food, I cook some of the food, I can dance salsa, and I can survive almost anything. I won't let any uptight prick tell me who I am. No matter if they're from Puerto Rico or not, we'll have a problem if they try to tell me who I am. Be proud of who you are. No one can define who you are except for you.

It’s so refreshing to see these types of videos! It’s interesting being an African-American who has no link to the islands whatsoever and inadvertently still feeling connected. De hecho, I’ve learned And practiced Spanish for the last 8 years and its just so powerful and moving that that I can dig just a little deeper into the culture and everything else because I speak Spanish. Destiny, kill it, boo! Keep these videos comin, Pero Like! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I relate to this video on so many levels. My grandma is 1/2 Puerto Rican but I didn’t grow up with much of the culture beyond knowing I loved pasteles and gandule rice and could eat them all day everyday. Recently I’ve been learning more about the Puerto Rican side of my family and the culture, but since I’m essentially only 1/8th, it sometimes feels like barely a connection. It’s so nice to see others like me exploring their Puerto Rican side and especially interesting to see their journey.
TLDR - Gracias Pero Like for helping me to embrace my Puerto Rican side through your videos!

Well I'm Dominican...grew up around Dominicans all my life...but I've always been told that I don't "act" dominican...i know exactly what people mean, I don't fit into the stereotypes...I'm not loud, I don't dance merengue nor speak freakishly fast with a Dominican accent...I have a very calm demeanor, like classical music and my Spanish sounds "universal" (I don't know how else to describe it 😁 )...and I'm still 100% Dominican and proud. So yeah, I too represent Dominicans and the culture.
People need to stop trying to define others and categorize them according to what they believe to be is right... and most importantly, people can't let the unsolicited ignorant opinions and thoughts of others, question who you are and what you represent.

I can 100 % relate. My father is Black & Puerto Rican too. My grandmother is from Poncé. So I too am 1/4 Boricua but growing up I had many people say I was lying because I couldn’t speak Spanish and didn’t look like it. But over time, it just fueled my desire to learn more about my Latinx culture.
