- The Carpenters Karen Playing Drums reaction
1. I feel like a good drummer is an enthusiastic one. I say that because if you have a good drummer they're totally the glue of the band and they're able to really hold everything together. You're also really able to draw energy from them. When they fill good or give you a good kick into the next stanza it really helps you play better. When that drummer is going off you feel absolutely invincible.
I noticed that in this video. when she was playing the drums, that big beautiful smile never left her face.
yeah she legit absolutely and I mean ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT.
Yes she was most happy playing pure smile
I've never seen someone so happy and content behind a drum set than Karen.
Karen was very well respected as a drummer by the best of the drummers of her time!!
She said of herself that she was a drummer that sang, nit the other way around!
She wasn’t just a drummer, Karen Carpenter was a percussionist.
ya, and at 9:00 she wasnt backed my cubby abrian. amazing
She made it seem so easy, to drum and sing at the same time!
She was in her element indeed! Greatest singer/drummer of all-time!
Pure joy when she was behind those drums.
I know. absolutely happy
She often had Cubby O'Brien backing her. She was absolutely tremendous. She thoroughly understood her brother's ideology & jazz arrangements, thus allowing her to follow him in anything & to perform her own solos. They were a tremendous duo.
You're right on,I've been playing drums for close to 40 years and that is where I feel most comfortable, sitting behind the drums.I am generally a quiet type, but when I play I relax and really come out of my shell..Karen was a world class drummer, not given the credit that she deserved for her ability.
Such talent packed into one person. Gone way too soon.
That first bit (with the first note of a tuba solo at the edit point) is from a Dick Carpenter Trio recording made around 1965. Karen was 15...
She was an absolute amazing drummer
THE GREATEST FEMALE DRUMMER OF ALL TIME!!
I love seeing her so happy while playing drums ❤️
With a voice like Karen's just playing the drums would be an unforgivable sin. I love this girl. Simply authentic and unique to me.
def authentic
Karen considered herself a great drummer and an okay singer.
Thank you for reacting! Her talent was off the charts, hope you enjoyed watching her!
You'll love "I can Dream, Can't I?" by the Carpenters...it's a 1930s 40s type song that she does beautifully.
Oh yes yes yes yes yes...I am still waiting for someone to react to that timewarp bliss-out of a track. Sammy Fain song from 1938, orchestrated for Carpenters by '50s bandleader Billy May...
Had Karen lived, Carpenters, in more recent years, would have made an unholy amount of money off standards albums (a la Rod Stewart a few years back). No one could sing a torch song like Karen. No one. Ever.
Great reaction Jay, karen was a very talented girl 😄😄
Karen was fantastic
Yes, yes, and yes. As phenomenal a singer as she was, she always said she considered herself a drummer first, a drummer who just happened to sing.
She is the best🌟👌
I saw Karen sing and play in 1972 . It was effortless. Check out her cover of Help and Dancing in the Streets.
She said she was always more comfortable behind the drums
when you find your spot you find your spot.
Yes, she said she was a drummer who could sing. And man could she do both, her voice was pure silk, NO auto tune back then, just pure, raw talent!💕
In a 1975 Playboy magazine readers poll, Karen Carpenter was voted the best rock drummer of the year-beating out Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. Clearly insulted, Bonzo quipped, “She couldn't last ten minutes with a Zeppelin number.” Carpenter was more than capable on her instrument, though. In my opinion sour grapes on Bonham’s part. And quite honestly I would put her talent up against anyone.
And apparently she could more than hold her own with hard rock drumming. She just never had the chance. Rumor has it that she was supposed to guest drum for her best friend Olivia Newton-John during one of her tours but she was just too weak at that point :(. Can you imagine how cool that would have been??
Bonham was no doubt a great drummer, but he should have observed her playing a bit more. Its obvious she could've been a great rock drummer, as well, she could play other styles of music, some of which would leave many rock drummer scratching their head.. But the topper, it was a Playboy article and she was a beautiful woman... Duh...
What Bonham and others missed is that she was a drummer for the Wrecking Crew. As a session player she played ALL types of music at the highest level.
Someone should have shut Bonzo up with: "Yeah, let's hear you drum AND sing like Karen simultaneously."
I know what you're talking about with enthusiasm and how you can feed off of it. I remember my jazz band days. I was in the percussion section as the pianist. The guitarist, drummer, and myself would just feed off of each others energy. It was such a good time!
One talented entertainer...you wont see Beoynce or Mariah Carey or any other now a day singers with a voice like Karen's and no less play the drums. Not even close!
she is just so happy playing the drums
yes p- never saw Karen happier than when she was drumming.. it was almost a curse to her to have such a beautiful voice.. her brother, Richard, was a talented singer/writer/pianist -- but he pressured Karen into a "front" position in which she was not comfortable.. yet.. SO great -- there are a few videos where she is singing lead and also drumming..
I think it looks weird when she's singing and drumming. It's like a really pretty song and she's drumming.
Normally when they sing and drum it's like a super intense song.
She was the attraction that was where the dollars come from
I mean she was so badass but still so Karen. I hate how her mother and others tried to criticize her. But I guess it was a different time. Awesome that she carried on with it anyway - I love that she had her own mind. I love your observations about her as a leader 👏👏
Hmmm ya self esteem and approval is important....especially when raising kids.
Karen was an excellent drummer and had the best female voice in the history of music!!!!❤❤❤
Thx! Totally agree about enthusiasm! I suspect she had that enjoyment even before she developed her chops! Great jazz behind her as well! -Terry
ty
That was great and damn Richard doesn't get near enough credit for how good he can play the piano .
wow they were great both of them.
Now watch the version of Rainy Days and Mondays where it's live and she's playing the drums, it always catches people off-guard.
I agree, and any of the early live concerts (like Australia) where she was behind the drum kit the entire time. Outstanding
Karen always said she was a drummer who happened to sing. I believe and could play base too.
Karen was an award winning jazz drummer. Buddy Rich loved her drumming! 🥁🥁
One can just imagine the neighbors reacting to when Karen would start beating her drums LOL... she seemed so, so happy when playing the drums.
Karen had a great voice but the drums were her first love and christ she was good. Probably one of the best there was.
Karen once described herself as a drummer who sings. When were 9 my friend Melissa wanted to learn the drums. The band director told her that they were for boys. She was given a tenor sax instead. As for n me, I joined the school chorus. Today I am a young adult librarian and sing first soprano with the North Shore Chorus.
Yes enthusiastic for sure and very good drummer...you failed to mention she was a good drummer in your reaction!!
Well Jay had already said he'd been hesitant to do this reaction because he's not as knowledgeable about drumming as about his own brass specialty. Perhaps he didn't want to put that out there where it could be jumped all over by people who are experts in the field...I could understand that...
@@StudeSteve62 I cannot play the drums...this is not rocket science? Its the eye test...yes she is a very good drummer!!
Sir--------------AS you see, " the band" Rich & Karen had, was top notch ---------------1st class. ---------------------WolfSky9
And as you clearly see : Karen LOVED drumming. -------------------------------WolfSky9
IN this last segment from '81------------you see how MUCH WEIGHT KAREN HAS LOST ! When i saw this, I was shocked at her appearance ------------------Her weight loss was impossible not to show in '81; she had less than 2 years, to live.------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
The Carpenters were originally a jazz trio, so she's an above average Jazz Drummer, and way above rock drummers. I see a lot of "Buddy Rich" style in her drumming too.
ohh see I'm not good enough with drums to know who her drum styles resembles. You must be expert level.
I started playing professionally at age 14, then played with the Thunderbird Jazz Band in the Air Force at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, where I saw a lot of the big names in music on the strip. It was a toss up if Karen played more like Buddy or Gene Krupa. I consider Krupa the master, and Rich the showoff. Neither one of them could sing, lol,lol...
Here are the 2 giants in Jazz drumming. Enjoy.

I heard years ago Karen never really wanted to sing she loved the drums. Am happy we got to hear her beautiful voice before she passed away.
Just a bit of more info the person playing drums in the background is Cubby O'Brien (the former Mouseketeer)-
Being a former Mouseketeer seems to have its perks
Como a Karen Era feliz na Bateria ela jamais poderia ter deixado de tocar Bateria sei que ela com uma voz tão linda todos queria que ela ficasse na frente com sua voz mágica mas isso tirou um pouco da felicidade dela
Many drummers such as Clive Bunker, Don Brewer, Ian Paice, and Carl Palmer could learn quite a bit from Karen Carpenter. She loved playing drums more than singing.
Happy new year everyone 🎄💐
Jaybriel, since you like and play brass, if you haven’t heard them before, check out music by Chicago and also by Blood, Sweat and Tears for some great brass. A start for Chicago would be 25 or 6 to 4, and for BS&T, Spinning Wheel and You’ve Made Me So Very Happy.
Ohh I know 25 or 6 to 4 lol. Ya I know that one for sure.
The drummer that sang❤😢
requesting karen doing -Don't cry for me Argentina
ok
it's coming don't worry
hey, ive never seen the clip from the 9 minute mark. where was that from
Queria muito ver uma cantora que faz cover da karen carpenter tocar bateria, lembrando que ela era cantora e baterista mas só lembram da Karen cantora
The drummer's job is to keep the beat. Enthusiasm depends on the group dynamic. Karen, as the front man, is carrying the group, whether she's singing or drumming, so it's appropriate. At the other end of the spectrum, take ZZ Top - Frank Beard is the guy in the background, holding it together - his job is to keep the beat. The two guys in front don't need his enthusiasm. Even better - Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, wearing a business suit and chain smoking, looking bored as hell, but laying it down like the pro he is.
Course there's no escaping how fine a keyboardist Richard was, either. Happily that's actually still "is", since Richard, 74 now, still plays.
ya he's still writing. I read about it. I think that's amazing. I'm sure the guy has music left in him.
With her talent why on earth did they need a 2nd drummer?
I do agree that she was so talented. I just could never get into her music. I'm sorry🙏🙏
wait you don't like Karen Carpenter's voice? really?
I'm sorry,it's good. I jutst can't connect with it.i did the same with Barbara striestan back in 80s now I love
Reaction on k pop
who cares bout Jaybriel Akol? KC is da one!!!
Karen was so cute until she began to waste away from anorexia.
So shes enthusiastic...but wasnt she a great drummer??????
She was, clearly!
