Pop Rivet Tools for the Locksmith! Harbor Freight’s $5 tool, Quinn, Doyle, or Arrow?

- In this video we are going to take a look at Pop Rivet Tools from Harbor Freight (both the $5 kit, and the Quinn Tool) and one from Home Depot/Lowes from Arrow.
Which one should you get? What do you use the thing for as a locksmith? How do rivets work? What about the larger pop rivet tools from Harbor Freight?
We will hopefully answer some of those questions and more in this video!

What size pop rivet would you use for commercial type ASA strike plates? I believe they use 12-24 screws, so would that be 1/4" pop rivets?

Thanks, Jason! As far as dissimilar metals, most aluminum blind rivets have steel mandrels.

Their $9.99 swiveling head one is junk, you sometimes have to squeeze several times to get it to snap the rivet, the cheap $5 one actually works better. Regardless, for the price you can buy several and still have less invested than buying other brands and they come with rivets too, which is a good deal.
I have pop riveted things I probably shouldn’t with that PR tool you put in my box. Still haven’t used it on the job..I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not.

I have some strong preference toward the Marson HP-2 over most other similar style pop rivet tools. The fact that you can order replacement parts for it suggests to me that it is intended for a longer service life.
If you work with pop rivets in larger quantities or sizes frequently most of the larger two hand tool or powered tool are worth it. personally I find even inexpensive pneumatic rivet guns work quite well. I have also have a used the Milwaukee M12 rivet gun a fair bit and love it. Honestly it is not all that expensive if you use a lot of rivets.
I am interested in the wide range of drill powered rivet gun attachments like the Astro Tool ADR14 XL. They seem like they might be a good in between option. I have a Astro Tool AND14 riv-nut tool and have been very impressed with it. it has plenty of power and is not too hard to used. Much better than the basic wrench drive type tool and way easier to use than the pop rivet style riv-nut tools.
I use them so much I’ll probably end up with a Milwaukee tool for them, but for the “average” user any of these works fine :)

Would say that's the only issue with rivet tools is the shank sticking in place. Never had any break half way. Have own the $5 one for a long long time.
ribbit ... ok kermit, another great video. i'm gonna guess that all the people who didn't think it acceptable to drill out a rivet in 2 seconds are thoroughly familiar with drilling out a deadbolt on a regular basis
That was pretty interesting. I use a rivet gun for general purposes. I found I like a long narrow nose in case I want to rivet an angle bracket/install a rivet close to something.
I use a small arrow brand rivet gun because it fits in the larger center tub of the shallow Milwaukee pacout. Leaving four of the smaller tubs with dividers for storing a different rivets and backer washers.

Riveting! Beargrip did the color coded rivets 20 years ago, it did not stick. But it sure was handy!

Excellent review. I used thousands of 1/8" c'sunk Black aluminium rivets for attaching chassis XLR connectors to my Pyrodigital Firing Modules
