- When learning how to surf you'll invariably ask the question - where should my feet be placed? How. much weight should I be putting on my front foot Vs my back foot?
These are valid questions, however they are often SYMPTOMS or BYPRODUCTS of other technique elements involved in surfing.
In this video I show you some really tangible tips and some big A HA moments to help you distribute your weight a little more optimally. Where you look and point is where you go!

Thanks for tuning in friends! Can't wait to smash out the rest of 2020! Some HUGE announcements coming soon that I can't wait to share with you. The fact that you're here watching, reading, engaging is the best ever and I'm forever grateful. K
Hi Kale.. a good tip is: when you start a turn, place the back foot right on the "kicker" of the tail pad.. to make the board turn the most.. if the back foot is not above the rear fins, the board doesnt handle that well.. and if you want to gain speed you do the oposite.. Greetings from Portugal!
I always think I’m watching a Home Depot commercial when I begin your videos
I salute you Kale !! this is really in depth .. almost like those racing videos when you can see the gas-brake telemetry .
one question: often when I try to turn, pressing the back foot only slows me down and as a result I cannot complete the turn due to lack of momentum and speed. what can cause that ?
Not enough speed into the manoeuvre or perhaps trying a vertical approach turn on a horizontal section - try to use the rail more than the tail 🙌🏽
When I pop up my back foot is always way forward on the traction pad so maybe I’m not putting my hand far back on the board when popping up
Stay psyched and stay safe. God bless you all🙏🏼🙏🏼
hope this video improves my surfing thanks. what board r u riding at 3:06?
So pumped to hear of a rise in content 🤙🏽
man such a good video, your content is bomb. i've been following you for a while now and I definitely feel my surfing getting better! thank you sir!
Awesome! That’s what I wana hear
@KalesBroccoli say a 5’9 tall average surfer on a 6’2 short board, where should they keep their back foot while pumping? I find I can pump faster when my back foot is just slight ahead of the tailpad. And then I scoot my back foot to the kicker of the pad when I want to initiate turns. Longboarding background so it’s natural for me to shuffle my feet as needed throughout the wave.
Cohesive soliloquy had me perturbed, perplexed, flummoxed and flabbergasted initially, but I decided that an eloquent, articulate tutorial could only be a good thing. And it was good, exceptional in fact... :)
😂😍
1 Jealous person how SAD thanks Kale !!
Kale thanks for another great video. I have a question, you mention that your feet are staying in the same position throughout the wave, but I saw a video tutorial by Mik Faning, and in it he mentioned that actually you should be moving your back foot. For speed generation back foot needs o move forward, and when you perform maneuvers it needs to go all the way back. I am talking about this video: ua-cam.com/video/FEUM4fCde40/v-deo.html what do you think?
Maybe for very advanced manoeuvres however this will occur naturally as you respond to the surfboard (it would also change depending on the surfboard ridden)
Kale I see a lot of pros moving their feet back once they’ve generated enough speed so they can perform better manoeuvres. When is it time for a surfer to progress to this step?
It’s more of a weight shift than a foot placement shift
Happy to see the "hula" reference! :)
The dance/martial-arts spiral that the arms go through is the other half of the compression-extension "power plant" of the lower body,.. of course.
It would be interesting to you, I'm quite sure, if you did some research on hula technique (and it's "twin" Lua martial technique) in regards to balance and "proper aesthetic".
When it's done "right" is looks good BECAUSE you can feel (as an audience member) the balanced and deliberate power of the motion/stance and how it maximizes the available "options/freedoms" of motion to deal with any "contingency" (external perturbation) that might "interfere" with the desired goal of the dancer.
Aloha. :) 🤙
Awesome !
I don’t usually like or comment videos but this video guide was just amazing!
Great content Kale, can you please do a video using this weight distribution explanation regarding the setup/check turn you do at 5:44 to 5:45. Also where the arms should be when using this crucial set up for the forehand turn. I see this done by all the great surfers when linking their turns. Thanks heaps
My back foot lands in front of the tail pad on popup. How can I remedy this?
Again epic intermediate level content. Great tip on the back arm mimicking the compression and straightening of the body on turns. Also thanks for emphasizing back foot back over the fins. Even on shortboards you see guys going straight and just pumping because they are standing in the middle of the board.
🤙🏽🤙🏽
Kale, without any doubt, you are one of the best content creators out there. Your videos are perfect and help me a ton improving my surf. Keep rocking ✌🏼
Thank you so much
This is what I was working on lately!! Thanks! Great content as always 🙌
You're moving to California?
No
looks like someone in the back there is checking out kale lol 7:30
Surfers seem like artists in a way. Spending meticulous hours on perfecting a dance that's never repeated twice.
😍
thanks for the vids man, really helped progress my surfing the last year and a bit. See ya down at bells if you ever make it to victoria
💯 thanks bra
This was extremely useful! Have you ever thought of doing a video on fin selection? That would be amazing. Keep up the great content.
Yep eventually !
Hey kale! I've been folowing your videos since you created the channel because I watched How to rip too. I've recently made a video with a couple clips of me surfing. I think I can call myself an intermediate surfer but I've got a long way to go advanced. If you or any advanced surfers here can comment on my video what I'm doing wrong I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks for making me a better surfer!
I have given the opportunity to my Patreon members to upload their footage for analysis - you’ll have to join
@@KalesBroccoli Oh okay didn't know about that sorry! I'll be sure to check it out!
I’ve been surfing my whole life, but stuff really started clicking after watching your videos. Thank you
Thanks for the helpful vid Kale. I often find that my feet are too close together after popping up. Any tips for this? Am I rushing my pop up? Should I focus on getting my back foot planted on my pad first?
bs lipslide
Great video again!! The swell is starting to pick up at my local beach and I can’t wait to use you’re tips and really get some good waves. Have a good one and can’t wait for more video
Great explanation Kale. This also helped me figure out when to practice the different types of slides on my surf skate! Loving the increased content man, as an aspiring creator you’re a big inspiration
der boi kale is am been! greets from germany! great episode, exactly what i needed as an intermediate surfer, thanks for covering essential stuff, that others dont cover. lots of love!

Hes got the longboard out
😂 more coming!
I needed this can't surf for 6 weeks tho
what skateboard do you use?
SmoothStar
well spoken hopefully will be able to use some of this info thanks!
hi Kale! how do I conquer fear of unbroken waves? I'm stuck in white water! Maybe some tips to decrease speed? I just want to glide slowly. Great videos! Thank you!
Look at my other videos - learn it intellectually first and then breathe through it
Great tips! Always amazed how you move such a "chunky" board with such easy and its obviously the upper limbs yes!
Ps: what board do you ride ?
THE RAPTOR 😝
Thank you very much for your generosity. Just after watch that vid I got my best session so far on the standing whitewater/hole river. Way better movement, compare to just going strait... Landlock far from the ocean, progression isn't easy. So i'm grateful for the time that you take to share quality content. Cheers from canada
That’s awesome !!
So true that arms really help on speed and flow! Your last video on the Smoothstar really helped me getting this which I now can transfer in the water! 🤙 I look forward to the upcoming videos Bro!
Yes Tibo!! 😍
i fell asleep just before the start of the video and an ad played that was an hour and a half. woke up just at the end of it, hopefully that gives u some ad money ahaha
My favourite kind of nap

Hey I went surfing yesterday and caught my first clean face thanks to you. Love your video.
Great to hear!
Glad you’re back! ✌🏽
Great vid as always 👍
Hey Kale first off always love the content! Nobody does it better mate. I recently bought a 7’0 mid length, am an intermediate surfer but wondering whether I should bother with a tail pad. Thoughts? Feel like it helps more on knowing where my back foot is
Yeah it can help but not 100% necessary
Thank you bruski!
So rad!!
Hey man , i still learning how to surf,,. i would like to asking you , people say strong leg have to be at the back,. My strong leg is right, but I easy pop up as goofy, it that okay ?
might have to work on your flexibility on your right leg. otherwise if your goofy is the strong pop up then keep doing that
@@tonym9557 thanks man
