The whole purpose of repentance is metanoia. We Catholics understand that we have inclinations to sin, but we should also try our best not to act upon that inclination and to give that sacrifice to God for the redemption of sins and our own sanctification. So yes less gay is fine if it means drawing you closer to God

These accounts have been very inconsistent and as I am relatively well educated on medical topics, as well as Psychology these explainations seem more likely. Except, homosexuality wasn’t added to the Bible until later on. The original said “Man shall not lie with child as he does with woman.” It was changed because of the vast number of religious leaders indeed “laying with children” and the Church wanted to get ahead of it. I took Theology for 2 years and studied with 3 religious scholars. The Bible has been changed MANY times to fit the narrative of the times for each ruler.

My nephew was gay and finally decided to join the Catholic church and lived the rest of his life with his dog and became non-active. It was his choice and he lived a happy life working at Yellowstone National Park.

Quite understanding from a non religious. To be fair much of what society thinks of as the single life is also sin. Whime I've been told sexual sins are the least of our sins it's hard to engage in sexual just once. It becomes habitual and becomes akin to gluteny. It's like an erosion of the soul. A death by 1000 cuts sort of thing and that's why it's also "grave sin" as she says. The hardest part about being someone in his situation is that there isn't really a solution. For a man living hookup culture it's possible to get married and repent. But to be gay you can still technically marry a woman and father children but if it leads to a toxic loveless marriage then what good is faking it? We do believe that Jesus Christ can change hearts and we do believe in demons of impurity that may be causing this type of thing. But it can take a whole lot of prayer to shake these spiritual attachments and you can still have an addiction formed by habits. I do feel for these people. Their path isn't an easy one but hopefully it is a consolation to them that all things are possible through the father.

Actually pope Francis has made civil union of homosexual couples legal and acceptable in the catholic church, and because it says in the Bible many many times that the pope is infallible and he backed it up with verses of the Bible, it is appalling and ridiculous to me that this is still an argument. In every single verse where homosexuality is mentioned it was abhorred not because of the act itself but because of either a large age gap which was lost in translation, which was meant to discourage pedophilia (eg man laying with boy not man with man in original scripture), or because it was a gay person being sexually promiscuous. So basically you can be an excellent catholic according to our current pope as long as you abstain from whoring around and pedophilia. A committed homosexual relationship is not rejected by the church anymore.

And it really doesn't kick in until about puberty I would know (I'm gay). And yes studies have shown it is genetic and you may become gay for reasons in which you stated but it's mostly genetic. I find it interesting how people automatically assume that a religion must be bad if that particular religion doesn't believe in or allow active certain things.- such as gay relationships. There are many religions out there for everyone, and they are all very welcoming. But just like every country, every religion has its own rules and beliefs, and these you must follow to show respect to everyone else. Simple. Given how difficult this question must have been for her to answer, I think she did very well and was incredibly respectful. I have nothing against gay people, nor do I have anything against religious people. But if you wish to be part of a community, effort and respect must be shown on both sides. Mother Angelica has shown a lot of respect here by not only answering the question, but also showing that a gay person can be a very wonderful people within the catholic community, if they follow the rules of that community. That is not rejection, but an open offer of welcome. However, for a lot of gay people who wish to be actively gay, they will no longer be compatible with that religion. Nobody is judging the person for being gay, and there will be respect shown to that individual as long as they show respect back. There can often be a strong feeling of rejection when children are raised with specific religions from childhood, not understanding what it is that they're being signed up for by their parents, guardians or community leaders, and with no guarantee that they'll continue to fit into that community as they grow and learn. This is exactly why I don't believe in children being indoctrinated into religion from a young age. It can cause so many developmental issues even at the best of times, and I say this with all due respect to religious people here Now when you answer questions, and deal with something like this respectfully - as Mother Angelica has here - you are giving tools to a person to make their own decisions freely, respectfully and healthily, whatever path they choose. The issue usually comes when you have individuals within a community who will display signs of aggression, violence and abuse towards others, in order to dominate, humiliate and control them. This is not exclusive to religion, but in this context - this is where the major prejudices against religion come from. This proves that the issue is not with religion itself, but individuals of a controlling and dominating nature, and you'll see in the majority of religions that this behaviour is not accepted or tolerated at all. So where corruption exists, many people turn away from those people - or kick them out of their community where possible. (I say where possible, because obviously with positions of power come corruption, and sadly every community will fall victim to this at some point of another. If you speak to any decent person who has become aware that someone within their community is corrupt, they will either speak against them - if it does not put them in danger - or show incredible disgust, and relief when that person is arrested etc.)

I’m a Christian woman. I think that part of the issue is that many Christians became too complacent about sin. I suspect that this is true in Muslim societies too. Both are under danger from secular society.

I had a family member who was gay. He never came out of the closet as per say. His life was living a lie. He died the most miserable way and he suffered because he couldn't be who he was suppose to be due to the church and society ways. Imagine yourself living a life of hiding who you are. I learned how to be compassionate from his experience and understand that God doesn't make mistakes. May God bless those who judge so harshly with some understanding and acceptance.
He wasn’t born gay. He likely had a controlling or smothering mother and was therefore raised to be gay. There is nothing genetic or biological that makes a person gay. It’s learned. The church is supposed to teach the truth in a loving manner but never “adjust” the truth for society’s sake.

There is not a single explicit passage in the Bible that condemns being gay, homosexuality is not even mentioned (on the other hand it would have been impossible considering that the idea of sexuality we have today is completely different from the one they had when the bible was written). Catholicism is the result of the interpretation that the Romans gave of the Bible and homosexuality was perfectly integrated into Roman culture, the only thing that is said in the Bible is that the Christian has the duty to marry and reproduce this would justify, but implicitly, the exclusion of homosexual marriages but this is pure interpretation.

Hey coming from a 35 year-old who grew up gay and scared of the Catholic Church here in Florida.… I don’t know what to say still. I still have respect for the Elder generation. The original said “Man shall not lie with child as he does with woman.” It was changed because of the vast number of religious leaders indeed “laying with children” and the Church wanted to get ahead of it. My nephew was gay and finally decided to join the Catholic church and lived the rest of his life with his dog and became non-active. It was his choice and he lived a happy life working at Yellowstone National Park.
That sounds a bit sad although I can respect it. But to restrain yourself from experiencing mutual love for no other reason than "we decided it was not ok therefore it should not be ok" is quite sad. Quite understanding from a non religious. To be fair much of what society thinks of as the single life is also sin. Whime I've been told sexual sins are the least of our sins it's hard to engage in sexual just once. It becomes habitual and becomes akin to gluteny. It's like an erosion of the soul. A death by 1000 cuts sort of thing and that's why it's also "grave sin" as she says. The hardest part about being someone in his situation is that there isn't really a solution. For a man living hookup culture it's possible to get married and repent. But to be gay you can still technically marry a woman and father children but if it leads to a toxic loveless marriage then what good is faking it? We do believe that Jesus Christ can change hearts and we do believe in demons of impurity that may be causing this type of thing. But it can take a whole lot of prayer to shake these spiritual attachments and you can still have an addiction formed by habits. I do feel for these people. Their path isn't an easy one but hopefully it is a consolation to them that all things are possible through the father.

Actually pope Francis has made civil union of homosexual couples legal and acceptable in the catholic church, and because it says in the Bible many many times that the pope is infallible and he backed it up with verses of the Bible, it is appalling and ridiculous to me that this is still an argument. In every single verse where homosexuality is mentioned it was abhorred not because of the act itself but because of either a large age gap which was lost in translation, which was meant to discourage pedophilia (eg man laying with boy not man with man in original scripture), or because it was a gay person being sexually promiscuous. So basically you can be an excellent catholic according to our current pope as long as you abstain from whoring around and pedophilia. A committed homosexual relationship is not rejected by the church anymore.

I find it interesting how people automatically assume that a religion must be bad if that particular religion doesn't believe in or allow active certain things.- such as gay relationships.
There are many religions out there for everyone, and they are all very welcoming. But just like every country, every religion has its own rules and beliefs, and these you must follow to show respect to everyone else. Simple.
Given how difficult this question must have been for her to answer, I think she did very well and was incredibly respectful.
I have nothing against gay people, nor do I have anything against religious people. But if you wish to be part of a community, effort and respect must be shown on both sides.
Mother Angelica has shown a lot of respect here by not only answering the question, but also showing that a gay person can be a very wonderful people within the catholic community, if they follow the rules of that community.
That is not rejection, but an open offer of welcome. However, for a lot of gay people who wish to be actively gay, they will no longer be compatible with that religion. Nobody is judging the person for being gay, and there will be respect shown to that individual as long as they show respect back.
There can often be a strong feeling of rejection when children are raised with specific religions from childhood, not understanding what it is that they're being signed up for by their parents, guardians or community leaders, and with no guarantee that they'll continue to fit into that community as they grow and learn.
This is exactly why I don't believe in children being indoctrinated into religion from a young age. It can cause so many developmental issues even at the best of times, and I say this with all due respect to religious people here
Now when you answer questions, and deal with something like this respectfully - as Mother Angelica has here - you are giving tools to a person to make their own decisions freely, respectfully and healthily, whatever path they choose.
The issue usually comes when you have individuals within a community who will display signs of aggression, violence and abuse towards others, in order to dominate, humiliate and control them. This is not exclusive to religion, but in this context - this is where the major prejudices against religion come from.
This proves that the issue is not with religion itself, but individuals of a controlling and dominating nature, and you'll see in the majority of religions that this behaviour is not accepted or tolerated at all. So where corruption exists, many people turn away from those people - or kick them out of their community where possible.
(I say where possible, because obviously with positions of power come corruption, and sadly every community will fall victim to this at some point of another. If you speak to any decent person who has become aware that someone within their community is corrupt, they will either speak against them - if it does not put them in danger - or show incredible disgust, and relief when that person is arrested etc.)

I’m catholic and when I visited Muslim countries I was quite surprised at their hospitality and tolerance. It seemed like that they understand other religions if it’s not atheism. I had a family member who was gay. He never came out of the closet as per say.
His life was living a lie. He died the most miserable way and he suffered because he couldn't be who he was suppose to be due to the church and society ways. Imagine yourself living a life of hiding who you are. I learned how to be compassionate from his experience and understand that God doesn't make mistakes. He wasn’t born gay. He likely had a controlling or smothering mother and was therefore raised to be gay. There is nothing genetic or biological that makes a person gay. It’s learned. The church is supposed to teach the truth in a loving manner but never “adjust” the truth for society’s sake.

There is not a single explicit passage in the Bible that condemns being gay, homosexuality is not even mentioned (on the other hand it would have been impossible considering that the idea of sexuality we have today is completely different from the one they had when the bible was written). Catholicism is the result of the interpretation that the Romans gave of the Bible and homosexuality was perfectly integrated into Roman culture, the only thing that is said in the Bible is that the Christian has the duty to marry and reproduce this would justify, but implicitly, the exclusion of homosexual marriages but this is pure interpretation.
