- I wanted to go back to a place that made me feel at home, so the first place that came to mind in Europe was Sweden! I explore the city, Visby, try to do a bike tour and went solo camping in nature near the sea!

Well, the Vikings didnt really just disappear, times changed and so did they and their heritage still lives on. In western europe vikings formed societies in many places like Dublin and the area Normadie in France which actually is called Normandie because of the Northeners. Their ancestors later invaded England and so they still live on. In the east they also settled in different places and some say the name Russia stems from the name of the Baltic sea vikings which was called Rus. Also if you take a deeper look at the english language you will find that there are many traces of the scandinavians in it as well: Knee, comes from the norse word Knä, Knife comes from Knifur, window stems from the norse word windue which means "windeye". So they where mixed up with the locals eventually and assimilated. In scandinavia times changed and eventually they embraced the more continental culture witch christianity and feodalism and in the end they too adapted the same systems as everyone else.
So they didnt at all just disappear, somewhere deep inside most of us in europe there is a little piece of the viking left.
Well, in a genetical sense, many Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, even English, are more "Viking" than they are not, so to speak. Meaning that they have at least over 50% "Viking" heritage.

We "Vikings" are still alive here in Scandinavia. At least the descendants😊 Myself and my boys are descended from lots of warriors and kings. Rollo, Harald hair-fager, Gorm, Lagertha and others. My ancestors have been fighting and killing each other for millennia. Both sides of Stanford Bridge and Hastings etc. So what I wanted to get across, we still exist, but more peacefully. Don't wake the sleeping bear😁👍

I come to Gotland in the winter, leave before the summer. Can't stand the place during the peak summer season. Absolute mayhem. It's a shame, it's very beautiful during the summer months but ruined by the rampant tourism. I'm all for tourism but it's just madness on Gotland.
I didn't realise that Sweden has a such awesome place to visit. Gotland looks really as different as the majority of the cities/towns in Sweden. i feel it is more likely as Portugal? i might be wrong. Good video anyway, thanks for sharing!

Did you go to Fårö? I can really recommend a stay with the elderly farmers still active to experience their daily struggles, their sheep, their wool and food and their accent. It is almost a little fraction of the middle ages still preserved there.

@@NatashaBergen visby is the main filming location for pippi. I have found over 25 locations. The original house still exists, in kneipbynn , a small themepark just outside of visby.

I learned my great grandpa was from visby and my other family members dated back there to the 1740s on my great grandmother's family tree that she personally got when she visited family there 50 years ago. I wish I could meet my family there it seems like a small town. Last name nielsson or nielsen spelling may be off maybe nilsson
They are all patronymicon (that became surnames in the 19th century) so less help than one could hope. All is possible alltough Nielsen should have two s.
Nielsson, Swedish patronymic for the sons of someone with the Dannish name Niels.
Nielssen, Dannish/Norwegian patronymic for the sons of someone with the Dannish/Norwegian name Niels.
Nilsson, Swedish patronymic for the sons of someone with the Swedish name Nils.
Niels and Nils are obvious national variation on the same name so it quite possible that the same persson can have used both.
Nielsson if someone for some reason kept the Dannish/Norwegian version of the name and had a son in Sweden he would have been Nielsson, possibly but not very likely.
Nielssen it is very unlikely someone born on Gotland would have got a Dannish/Norwegian patronymic. But the name is common Denmark and Norway.
Nilsson very common in Sweden.
But it do seem that people from all the Nordic countries when far away more or less considered eachother belonging to the same culture and -sson (Sweden and Iceland) or -ssen (Denmark and Norway) was more or less used interchangable (from what I got fro my American relatives at least).

I wouldn´t call Gotland a hidden gem, possible the most well known, probobly because of the wast scale of the old city. There are tons of cities and town in Sweden that been royal residence for a generation or two, each and every one of them have a old city core from that era that have been vastly unchanged.
So its like every second city have one of those. And a few small towns have vast part of the core being old city, like Söderköping, small Town almost village size
Ihope you tryed some local food in Gotland like Safran pancake with jam our real Viking food.
Curious- did the Vikings invent the pancake 🤯😂 I wouldn’t be surprised 😁

One night in Visby and one night in a tent practically in eyesight from Visby?
You haven't really seen Gotland I would say.
If you want to see 3000 years old monument,then come to India. See incredible India. In india there are more than 300,000 building older than 1600 century.
That church ruin is from the 13th century, burnt down in the 16th. :)
The island of Gotland is truly a place to visit, but do some research regarding when in the year to visit. For a couple of weeks during summer there can be many a fueled mainland youths around and about in Visby.
Just as Wales, Scotland and England are facets of the UK, Gotland is a distinct facet of Sweden. Skåne in the south, Dalarna and Hälsingland in the middle, and Sapmi in the north, are other facets that all have their own to offer a visitor. Stockholm has a lot to offer too, of course.í
The further north you go, the quieter it becomes, and the more the silence speaks.
My personal preference is the balance in between, ie Dalarna around the lake Siljan.
Gotland is an insanely beautiful place, I would definitely be keen to visit during different times of year! 😁 And one day I'll go north🙌🏼

@@NatashaBergen hahaha oh gosh I miss the GoPro days 😭 BUT I like to think of it like.. even while putting out videos fairly frequently. I stalled out around 120 or 140 subscribers. Right when I started using this camera.... That number doubled in a month😂!!!! Granted I know it's a different kind of content now and that's why.... But still, the superstitious side of me says to keep going with the dji😂!!!!!

Vikings in Sweden generelly went east all the way into Ukranie to trade and pillage and the Vikings from Norway and Denmark went west, the term "Viking" was really a thing you did like "going on a viking quest" that meant more of sailing away to a forgein country to trade and plundare/pillage, getting rich in any means necessary in that regard. So the "Vikings" were traders/mercenaries/pirates who actually went on a Vikings quest, hopefully that would shine some light over the whole Viking theme. :)
Gotland is my favorite spot here in Sweden. Been there many times and did my military service on the island. Like you said, it's a hidden gem I feel many tourists (and swedes) miss out on...

Gotland is not as beautiful as Gotland as far as unsinkable stone aircraft carriers are concerned.
It´s been a while since I have been to Gotland but your presentation of Gotland is so good so I want to go there again and hiking. But camping isn´t my thing. The ringwall is built 1288

Well... Christianity came and eventually the whole Scandinavia adopted it. That's why the raiding and killing stopped more or less and Scandinavia became a part of the rest of Europe. We still conquered though. The North Sea empire. The Swedish empire and so on.

I've never felt more at home in a place before my trip to Visby. I probably helped that my Swedish family came from there in 1893. I was sure I'd never get to go, but "what's the point of having a life if you're not going to live it?"

Actually, the Swedish vikings weren't that aggressive. The Danish and Norwegian vikings, were more warrior like. The Danes was also practicing trade a lot, besides fighting.

Generally Vikings traded much more than they raided, but because most of the raid was against current day UK, this is what mostly was written down.
Also worth saying is that the Viking is rather a profession rather than a people. A sort of precursor to the professional sailors.
The raids effectively stopped when current day UK was taken over, but also when it was lossed, they didn´t continue due to a treaty. Pretty much Nordic countries was welcome in to the community of other states in Europe, in effect become equals to most European states.
The wars never ended, but due to Nordic countries now was considered "civilized" how it was reported in history very much did. Also the weapons of war change making the battles much larger.

@@NatashaBergen Most of the raiders was from west Denmark and Norway. Gotland would be pretty much exclusively a trading hub.
Of cause, a trading hub would pull in significantly more wealth than a raiding outpost. That is why Visby is absolutely huge by 8 century standard.
Prior to the 12 centary Nordic countries was a loosely connected pre kingdoms. I don´t know the number of them, but there was probobly 10th or even 100eds of them. This is very porly chartered.
First when Sweden was "unified" in 12 century, is the first real records. The reason is simple. Because Sweden then was counted as a christian country, the records was keeped by the pope, hence it survive to this day. This is why the Vikings just suddenly vanished and Sweden-Denmark and Norway suddenly appear. Its really a change of book-keeping.
In reality nothing of the kind really happened. The claim that Nordic countries suddenly become christian over night in the 11 century is most probobly just political propaganda from the day. There are artifacts from 14 century suggesting Norway was still not Christian at that time. There is ample evidence of that the munks send false evidence to the pope (probobly with the threat of being killed).
Why, because trade was much more beneficial and less dangerous then raiding. Prior to the peace most western nation just reduce to trade with the Vikings (while the eastern had no problems with that).
That is also Why Gotland and Sweden as a extension was so incredibly rich during this time. This richness was extended forward in time allowing Sweden to grew on the cost of Denmark and Norway. That is why Sweden is much bigger today. The three countries use to be about the same size. (and most of Sweden was actually where Finland is currently).
Actually during the high times Sweden was vastly larger than even today. Stretching all the way from S:t petersburg to Lübeck
