  • In this video, I share my experience of owning a VW Transporter day van and the challenges I've faced. One of the main issues I discuss is the size of the van, which can make it cramped and uncomfortable for extended trips. Additionally, I talk about the noise from the pop top, which can be an issue when trying to get a good night's sleep.
Despite these challenges, I also highlight the reasons why I love my VW Transporter day van. I discuss how it drives like a normal car, making it easy to maneuver and park, and how its compact size allows it to access places larger campervans can't. I also touch on the van's popularity in the campervan community, making it one of the most easily modifiable vehicles on the market.
Join me as I share my honest thoughts on the pros and cons of owning a VW Transporter day van, and find out why it's both a love and a struggle at the same time.

One more thing, I got the T6 to do the conversion on, and mine is only a Startline. I enjoy driving the van so much that I sold my L494 Range Rover as I always jumped in the van. This is my first transporter, and I never got the appeal of them until I owned one. I have done 8000 miles in it now and just love driving it.

Hi You have made my mind up for me with this video. I am in the middle of a conversion of t6 kombi and have been flip flopping from van furniture u shape seating and cabinets to Ovano Switch, I dont want a pop top and I doing want to cook on board. My next step is to commit to something for the back. Have already fitted the twin spinner for the front seat. It is going to stay a day van with occasional camp outs in warm weather so I get where your coming from, so its Ovano for me. Thanks for confirming what I already knew just wasn’t sure, the long haired general wanted the u shaped lounge until she watched this and now she gets it too. Happy Days.👍😀

Oh well that’s great. Choosing layout is the hardest part. The Ovano turning into a bed is a great option.
The switch is good. Gives a nice space up the side for things you don’t want to move. Electrical set up etc.

I had a T5 for work for 9 years then converted it into a camper. The most unreliable van I ever owned. I went to Portugal with my dog. Nowhere for him to sleep even with a swivel double seat. In a word, pokey. Sold it for a 2015 Vivaro and coverted it and the same problem. A much faster, smoother and quieter but still too small. Fast forward to my Citroen Relay swb low roof. I can stand in it, the 6ft bed across the back with storage underneath and a living space for the dog, chairs and much more relaxing . Better van, lots of room and puts a smile on my face, should have got it in the first place.

Is there a market? Absolutely! Would I prefer a sprinter sized camper? Absolutely! Could I accommodate a sprinter outside my flat fronted terrace house in a busy North Yorkshire seaside town? F**k no! So transporter is the best compromise, even if my neighbour has an almost identical sized van from another manufacturer that cost him half the price! Lol

I am building a "Toy Overlander" on a T6 4motion with a factory high-top van, as I would rather deal with the height issues than have a pop-top. One thing is that the 4motion system is closer to 4WD than it is to AWD. Unlike part-time AWD fitted to vans like the Sprinter that has a fixed 30/70 split (front/rear), the Transporters 4motion system can provide drive just to the front wheels OR just to the back wheels OR with any percentage of split drive. The versions with the rear diff lock (£500 option) are the best buys as normally the 4motion only engages once you are experiencing slip but switching on the diff lock forces 4WD to be activated.

I've got to be honest, I always wanted a vw campervan.....bought a 2017 T6.....clutch and flywheel needed replacing at 30k.. oil leak at 25k...side door wouldn't open....then the barn doors.... and more engine management lights I've ever had on anything I've owned....
So I thought....must have been a bad one... purchased a brand new 2019 plate and guess what....oil leak at 20k!!! EML light on about 20 times, adblue problems.

We had a high end T6 conversion, and I never thought of it as a campervan which may sound odd. We had many nice weekends away in it but ours was the most practical family car you could wish for that did the school run but… it happened to also allow camping. We used it as a day van just as much as a camper. It’s a base for a day out where you could use the porta potty, cook, take a nap, get changed out of wet clothes, etc. I used it when dropping my 8-year-old off at his various clubs and sports. It was a lounge for several hours a week.
It was compromised and with two adults and a young child, space was an issue but for weekends away and an awning, it was tolerable. We would love a Crafter/Sprinter to give a bit more space and have the luxury of a fixed rear bed and the flexibility to not need a pop top to stand up in it when it’s windy or pouring down. It would also be nice to spend more time away and the bigger vans are better for that. The problem is the price of these things. For us to afford one, we would have to trade in one of our cars towards it. It would have to do the school or office run each week and I’m not sure I’d like to live with a Sprinter as a daily. They are a luxury to sit alongside the ‘his and her’ daily cars and we just can’t afford that.

I was waiting for the answer to the question at the beginning - how is it better than Traffic?
I spent a total of a couple months in a converted Trafic van. Transporters rust, they are not without their issues, especially T5s. Trafic and its clones are VERY well rust-proofed, the only rust I've seen on the last 3 generations of Trafic was when the body got damaged and zinc layer was compromised while Tees are anything but immune to it. Trafics are wider and don't have tapered sides, they're basically square boxes behind a cab which helps when you want to convert one yet they still fit a standard parking space. They're cheaper to buy and maintain, last and previous gen drive pretty much like a passenger car (I actually prefer the driving experience to a rental Caravelle T6 I drove on holidays). The minibus taxis up in the mountains here used to be all VW T4s. Nowadays they are mostly Trafics and Vivaros (before the PSA-FCA merge into Stellantis that is). Their drivers need reliable cars that can withstand snow, salt and abuse. You really need to look for a while to spot a T5 or a T6 there.
Apart from the bigger accessory market (because they are more popular) and lower depreciation (because... guess what, they are more popular) what is the reason they are more popular in the first place? They aren't better cars, so.... Why?

exactly way i've got mine. i don't see it as a campervan i see it as a day van really with overnight options. Being busy most of the time with work my options are weekends only. if i want a bigger break we go abroad. we've got the awning swivel seats and the diesel heater. Heater is the key for winter. I'm currently using it for work as my work van is off the road with a blown turbo. the parking is the key you can get it in a normal parking spot. Only a couple of us going we pull out the rear seats and i also stick the bike in there if I'm out on my own. Problem with the bigger vans is having somewhere to park it without pissing everyone off or having to pay to do so. Be around for ages these and they're built to last

New subscriber here - this video made me laugh! 😅 I have both a T4 & T5.1 camper and there are 4 of us…5 including our doggo! Genuinely, you can fit 4 (2 are obvs kids), in a transporter without issue. The trick is; drive-away awning!!!! We all sleep in the van but the awning gives that extra living space. And let’s be honest, you don’t go adventuring/camping to sit in the van…it’s literally for sleeping in! Additionally, the T5 is my every day van and parking is a dream so much more convenient than the larger vans. That said, I will at some point be upgrading to a Crafter 😅 Happy travels :)

There is no questions there is a Volkswagon tax to pay but like you said in the film it will hold its value for the most part. I do like the fact that mine feels pretty much like a (big) car when I drive it and the fact I can throw a load of bikes, camping gear, etc in the back without breaking a sweat is a massive bonus. All that being said, the Transit would do everything the same and actually does a lot of things better (cup holders that actually take big cups without hitting the windscreen for example). If I had to buy one now knowing what I know it would probably be a Custom - I am not unhappy with the VW though - its a Jack of all trades and does everything I want of it. Yours looks great though - love the Swamper look. The Ovano Kit also looks pretty sweet

We have a T6 Caravelle 4motion with the diff lock. We use it as a day van but I have slept in it. For family holidays we tow our touring caravan with the Caravelle. That setup works well for us. It’s the best and most versatile vehicle I’ve owned but it’s also the most unreliable. It always has something wrong with it. After owning Toyotas for 20 years and not a single issue with anyone of them, owning the VW has been frustrating at times which is a shame as it ticks a lot of boxes for us.

😂😂 Definitely get a heater. Our vw is our everyday and we love it. Where I live the country lanes and places I go would be ruled out by anything bigger. We did debate a bigger van but the practicalities ruled it out. Your used to all the luxurious elements in your Mercedes. Was shocked last weekend at the noise when I went up top to sleep. Never been as noisy as that in the 4 years of having one.Down below quiet up in the pop top u hear everything, just like your river crashing waves are not soothing. Since then I now have earplugs. A bigger van is appealing but the practicalities and running cost keep me with my vw. U pointed out some very good points for both. Not at all jealous of you having both 😂😂😂. If I’m honest I would love a Sprinter or a Crafter size van BUT! We bought the Transporter as our first van to convert. We bought the SWB and as you say it fits pretty much anywhere which is great but so would other makes of vans. I haven’t fitted a kitchen in mine, just have a table and stick a little stove on there to do a bit of cooking. Bought a cheap diesel heater and fitted underneath the van and tapped direct into the vehicles fuel tank. It’s not our only vehicle so only light mileage unless camping. I fitted the single passenger seat with swivel base which came with the VW Tax on the price of it. As you say there is so much aftermarket kit that you can buy and fit. Replaced the headlights with Transporter HQ V3’s brilliant addition to the van.
It’s been a great camper over the last four years building it slowly. It’s been hugely practical for us and the only regret is putting my old 4x4 in PX for it.

People say swb is so easy to park. No difference whatsoever. Its exactly same width. It's very easy to find a space in car park. I've Never had any problem parking my van. NEVER. Someone on UA-cam made a comment when he mentioned about difference between lwb & swb. He said its only a few inches. I commented back to him 16" isn't a few inches. I'm 78 & single (wife died 2021)

I bought a brand new fiat talento onyx edition lwb brand new, right in the middle of the pandemic for £25k including vat, they are now about £43 k, when nothing like that was selling, got it professionally fully converted to a campervan. With the money I saved not buying a transporter, I bought a second hand 4 berth fixed bed caravan as well, for more static holidays. Very happy I chose the Fiat instead of a transporter, not being a badge snob. To be honest caravans are the best option of anything. You don't have to put everything away and back to driving mode before you go anywhere because you just leave the caravan behind and go in the car, much cheaper to buy and much more luxurious inside with oodles more space.
The trouble with sprinters, crafters or any bigger motorhome, you can't take or park them anywhere, they are a nightmare.

    • @urbanarkoverland
      @urbanarkoverland  Рік тому +1

Hey. The fiat is nice actually. Sounds like a good buy.
Driving a sprinter has its cons. But much easier and less awkward than towing a caravan.
No matter how good you are at towing. You do lose a sense of freedom. Never wanting to explore too much in case you get stuck.
But you’re right. When you’re at your destination. Caravans win hands down.

Its always a compromise. Yes a crafter/sprinter would be good as you have a bit more space but its just not enough extra to deal with all the negatives .
Parking is a huge problem, you want to park anywhere and thats the freedom a smaller van gives.
Going out for the day and you just cant get parked up. Most car parks are too small for a midsize can.
Storage in the t6 is more than most larger conversions.
You get all the under bed, wardrobe , rear cupboards, under sink, above...
Then put a roof box on for everything else. Especially wet stuff , boots , sports stuff ....
4 get in ours without a pop top. Use cabunk .
Its way warmer and quiet . The pop top isnt worth really having. If its windy / wet /cold /noisy its no use .
Your sitting down most of the time anyways.
Shower toilet is not an issue. Always a bush for a piss and a pub etc for anything else.
To loose so much space and storage for something you use 1% of the time isnt worth it.
You still need to empty the toilet somewhere.
Shower means taking a lot of water and heating it. Run out then where do your get more?? We are wild camping .
Cooking-.well its a free night away so just go a buy food . A hob is great for a brew or getting hot water for pasta etc but your van ends up smelling .
Portable small gas hob is perfect so you can be outside.
Everyone forgets its a camper van. Not a caravan.
You end up with the same problems as a caravan or motorhome .
Yes t6 etc is a squeeze but its just a bedroom on wheel's, that drives like a car and can be used every day.
Just my take on it and why we still have the t6. Looked many times at getting a bigger van but i known it will make the exploring more limited .
    Top vids mate

Masterfull review ! Especially running water and plumber. You could give clarkson a run for his money on VW vans ! Simply superb. If you travel light small vans are ok. My dad had a 1972 vw T2 dormobile conversion and we travelled from UK to Venice which took 3 weeks going through all of europe and over the Alps (slowly !) So in the van were my parents my sister 16 and I was 10. We had an awning but didn't use it very much. The van was basic, no heating,no leisure battery EHU and manual foot pump for water. Side kitchen and rock and roll bed with brilliant side opening dormobile roof ( thats what they were well known for) it was no problem and the best adventure holiday ive ever been on. It was our only vehicle and was good for house renovations day trips, school runs and transporting relies and staying at relies on their drive To do it you have to all be of the same mindset. My dad had been in the Navy and was used to tight spaces and we only took what was really useful and we never felt that we had left anything that we needed when we came back. That trip taught me to think what to take on any trip away and also what's needed in a house ( de cluttering) Small vans rule especially VW for the reasons you said. Id be happy with a combi or caravelle or california beach and virtually put nothing in it but a Lion portable battery and portable toilet ! I absolutely love my van plus a fixed full size 40 winks queen size bed in the rear ,an ovano switch table .I don't have a pop top tent so my cooking is done in the awning. Off grid electrics are a must .I am currently working on a set up for the rear that allows me to remove my 3 individual rear seats and replace it with a utility box that contains a dual burn hob and a sink in one and allows access to my lift up fridge. This unit will sit at the foot of the bed but still be strong enough to seat on and climb over to get to the bed.. I paid enough money brand new for my van to have bought a mwb crafter swamper but my driveway is limited to space and I wasn't going to leave my van on the road as I live in London.
