    Excellent video guys. I run a specialist Transporter dealership supplying trade and retail clients. The base van is the key and I have to say your comments on the van choices were spot on particularly the mileage issue. Nice one guys that was really accurate 80k in a van is appx 25/30k in a car. Keep up the good work

    Me and my partner bought an SWB VW panel van for conversion with only 18,000 mileage even though it is a 2016 T6 Transporter. We wanted low mileage because we want it to last for 10 years and do a lot of touring on the continent. Air Con was a must. We also wanted the best conversion we could afford and also a 4-birth and top-up, even though it will only be for the two of us, so space isn't then an issue. We were lucky and one came up, but we were looking every day and wasted no time snapping it up, knew exactly what we wanted, and didn't want. For instance we didn't want a TV, or a diesel heater or a microwave/oven or anything that would be guzzly with fuel. We did want solar panels, given that we intend going to hot places. It is very important to do your research and make sure the cash is available because there is a lot of competition for these vans, but also be patient, don't rush into compromising on your must have's. It's a very good idea to check out your converter, look at their vans, discuss what you want and don't want in person and things like lead times on fittings.

    Skipped over the 4Motion option.
    In Australia just about every other vehicle on the road is either AWD or 4WD in any configuration (usually diesel) whether it be an SUV or proper off road Single-cab Ute, dual-cab Ute, slide-on camper or in this case the LWB/SWB 4Motion VW Transporter TDI DSG Auto/Manual or MB Sprinter.

    The only reason to go for SWB over LWB is if you don't physically have room to park a LWB at home. On the road (and in the vast majority of carparks) the extra 40cm of the LWB is virtually imperceptible. When camping though, you will find that extra 40cm is an absolute godsend.

    It’s not just the engine that I would be concerned about. It’s everything else that’s done 100,000 miles.

    • @HighlifeCampersUK
      @HighlifeCampersUK  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Christian, thanks for your comment. VW Transporter engines are famously reliable when they are looked after, and like any vehicle, parts will need to be replaced occasionally, but it also depends on how you are planning to use a camper, if you are only going to be doing the odd weekend away you won't put many miles on it so it will last for years, however, if you are intending to use it as a daily driver as well, then that has to be taken into consideration when choosing mileage. But as a rule of thumb anything up to 100,000 miles is considered low mileage on a VW Transporter. Hope that helps.

      Mileage is a factor but my experience of vw having a 2 passats & currently a T6, is if we’ll serviced from new, engines only start to loosen up & go really well at 80,000 plus & both passats got to 130,000 & 165,000 when sold them on! Also, so many parts on Vw are engineered well & last though when they do need replacing, yes bit more costly but no where near how often need renewing than lots of makes.

    Hi all I’ve lived in a lwb t5 for 3 yrs the extra space is a godsend as for parking etc it’s no different to a 5 series estate
    Now the elephant in the room the engine and gearbox don’t assume cos it’s Vw it’s reliable the 6 speed manual box on my t5.1 sportline is made of chocolate and the engine is not much better I’ve had oil coolers replaced injectors replaced
    Not what you would expect listening to this video
    There really isn’t any bad vans nowadays but I will say that it’s quite narrow compared to transit /vivaro
    Having said all this I love mine but just be aware of VAT or Volkswagen added tax 😂

    • @HighlifeCampersUK
      @HighlifeCampersUK  Рік тому

      Hi Chris, thanks for your comment and input. Things can go wrong with any vehicle as they are all slightly different and a lot of it comes down to their history and how well they have been looked after in the past. But in general VW vehicles are very reliable as are most other cars/vans these days as you say. You are also paying for the badge which is fine if you are happy to do that, and plenty of people are, love the new use of VAT by the way!

    How can a short wheel base van be “a lot easier to drive on winding roads” and “a lot easier to park”, but be “ only a couple of inches longer” when considering the difference in usable space. If its only a couple of inches difference then surely it doesnt make that much difference to drive or park? I ask this as a long term owner of a long wheel base van.

    • @HighlifeCampersUK
      @HighlifeCampersUK  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your opinion, much appreciated. It all depends on how you will be using a camper, if it's a daily driver as well then parking and manoeuvrability do need to be taken into account, especially for people not used to driving vans and are maybe not as confident as you. It's personal preference at the end of the day.

    I'm looking for a VW campervan at the moment but is it worth buying a diesel especially with the way fuel prices are going.Ive looked at the Transport ABTE electric but at only 85 miles approximately on a full charge it's just not feasible.Any ideas what I should do.Thanks

    • @HighlifeCampersUK
      @HighlifeCampersUK  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there. Thanks for your question. It's a good question and what I would say is, the cost of diesel will come down in the near future and diesel engines aren't going anywhere soon and although diesel is expensive at the moment it is the most economical compared to petrol. A VW Transporter will generally do around 50 MPG especially on the motorway so we would recommend diesel. The electric engines on the VW Transporters are useless for campers as you will need to re-charge every 60-80 miles which so not practical at all. If you would like to have a chat to discuss your options and get your questions answered you can schedule a call with us. Just Google 'Highlife Campers' and go to the contact page on our website. You do more miles in your car than in your campervan usually, if it is not your daily driver. We have an electric car and we do all the commuting and shopping in it. On overnight cheap electricity it is 5p per kwhr on Octopus go. This works out 13 times cheaper than my other diesel car at 50 mpg. The electric car used daily subsidises our camper trips in the diesel van, where it has a 600 plus mile range, where it matters. Electric cars are very expensive to buy now but mine was bought 6 1/2 years ago and only has 107 mile range, when it was new, less now but it is a perfect car for local trips, saving a fortune on fuel now in these challenging financial times. Save even more money and don't buy a VW, buy a Traffic or Talento and get it converted. It does the same thing at the end of the day for less money.

The T5 was even worse and new one is trouble ...and they are so over-rated and overpriced. • @stevezodiac491

    The first question should be why buy a VW Transporter. If you just want a campervan and are not a badge snob or VW fan boy, you can buy a bigger, more up spec and or newer van from Fiat or Renault like the Talento or Traffic. You can then spend the money saved on a better interior like a rib bed that is 120 cm wide, instead of a much more inferior rock n roll bed, like what this creator has, which is usually 114 cm wide, buy better cupboards, pop top, sink, hob, fridge etc, etc.
    After all it is only a camper van and only ever will be. The money saved could also fund many outings ?

    • @HighlifeCampersUK
      @HighlifeCampersUK  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Steve, you are absolutely right, you could opt for a Renault or a Fiat van and have more room and some money left but the fact is the VW camper market is massive and there are a lot of ‘VW fanboys’ out there and that’s the market we cater for, each to their own I suppose.

    I have lwb Renault trafic 2019. And have no difficulty ever with parking.
    Ive only just converted it. Just done my first trip. And when bed is out. Thought what on earth do people do with swb. There must be very little space to get changed etc.

      Lwb is a lot harder to park in cities in street parking. Not relevant to many, but it is to some. As you say, it's 16 inches which is quite significant, and when we rented a lwb a lot of street parking spaces were just about too small. There are a lot more spaces we can fit into with swb.
