Very relaxing. If you do go to Hull (or actually Beverley) you will see several more Scherzer rolling bridges - including some that still work. (Photos on my blog - June 2021).
I love these amazing iron bridges . We have a bascule bridge in my home town of Renfrew , Scotland . On the rare occasions when its opened , the whole town comes out to watch. Thanks as always for sharing xxx
Yes, just outside the marina near the service area (free) or further round/in the marina (charge). I’m hoping to get over on Sunday if you’re there I’ll say hello.
Thank you, the CRT moorings were full so we cam back a bit to the canal side. Didn't see you yesterday but we will be here for a few more days as we wait for the tide.
My family are originally from W.Stockwith and worked the Chesterfield canal many years ago. My grandfather actually met my grandmother whilst travelling through Retford. Bit of local history on the treacherous Trent, people used to swim between the two Stockwith's to visit the opposite pub.
I made the same trip down the Chesterfield up to Keadby via the Trent and on to Doncaster in a 20ft day boat. The year was 1976 and I was 16 years of age. No Internet communication or vhf.
@MinimalList My boat had a small sail supported by a mast on a tabernacle. Mechanical propulsion was a 4hp Villiers outboard. Teenagers in those days were pragmatic and we always found a way. Today I'm hopeless with the Internet, maybe I can't be bothered!
Had forgotten about the interrogations. You WERE gone awhile! Glad you are back and I have got to say, Michael, that I can only take your word for winds and other navigational struggle as you move the boat so smoothly, entering locks and going around obstacles so smoothly, like it is a route you take multiple times each day. It is never apparent that an issue is interfering with your tiller engagement. Salute!
It's so nice seeing a young couple like you talking things out!!! I can call you young because I am going on 72 !! I have been married 50 years. You two are doing a great job on your videos and talking good job taking care of gorge!! Take care be safe and I'll see you on the next video. 😮😊
Welcome to our neck of the woods (or bend in the river!). Our boat is at Goole Marina. It’s a great spot and very friendly. Don’t know where you are at present but lots to see. Cheers Les and Anne on Glendyne
@lesbrewer8431 we will be in goole marina in a couple of days. Hoping to head up the Ouse to York. Is there visitor mooring at the marina? we can't quite remember.
Brilliant video again lovely humor at the end and during, i sed to Irene Jo won't like it on there, but she's in good hands, that turning off the Trent looked easy. Don't know bout You tube think it's time you was on television. All the best Gary n Irene
That make sense. I just find it so strange that there are twin villages on opposite sides of the river and it is a multi mile drive to get from one to the other.
I wrnt down, and was a bit hyper, do was gunning it a bit plus did not allow for the speed of the river, so arrived 30mins earlier than i anticipated, another arrival!
Did this journey about ten years ago insurance Fairline Mirage shared the lock with a Narrowboat called the Spruce Goose and the chap who owned it was called Howard Hughes also another Narrowboat who really bumped into the lock smashed a lot of cups a plates we all made a donation of some of plates etc...Happy days 😊
@@MinimalList Thank you. That makes sense now. I know you take such good care of George. I love seeing him and your videos on the canals. Not a fan of river travel-too scary!
It’s been several decades since the bridge over the Trent, at Keadby has been lifted. Last century for sure. No commercial shipping of a size that would require it lifted has ventured further upstream than the wharves below the bridge since the later part of the 20th. Century.
@@composimmonite3918 Thanks for the precise dating 👍 that four year interval suggests that it simply ran to the natural end time of any need to open? I.e. there simply was no further requirement for larger craft to go upstream after ‘56. Do you know if that’s the case?
If you come to America, do not go on the Mississippi river. Or Lake Michigan or Lake Huron any great lakes. That's the nicest waterway I think I've ever seen. I have a 62 foot trawler and that is the nicest smoothest best river I've ever seen in my life. I've never seen any rivers in England or that rough. They tend to remind me of the drainage canal that goes around Chicago. Eventually, it ends up taking you down to the Mississippi river. And that's what the Trent reminds me of.
I'm considering this trip in my 27ft dawncraft to get from Leicester to Yorkshire quicker is there any requirements or advice it will be September when I make the trip Aby help appreciated 👍

Would love to but think it is going to be the wrong time of year for us.

Sounds like a real event. Sadly this one hasn't lifted for 50 years. :(
Brave warriors tackling the mighty Trent.
Hope you're both well
Nice to see you both on our screens.
Safe journey travels.
Thank you.

Ah that’s good. I did go over on Sunday but couldn’t see you. Not to worry.

Oh wow. It's not that treacherous but I definitely wouldn't fancy swimming across. Especially after a drink.

Thank you. We were gone for about three years I think but it is so good to be back. Thanks for the kind words and the support.
So glad you made it back to a canal mooring safely and can get everyone warm and fed again 😅😅😊

The river Idle you passed entering the Trent is the same river that passes through Retford where you were moored up.
Yep!

Aw thanks Gary, and Irene. I do feel very safe with Michael. It doesn't stop me back seat driving when I am very stressed though!
Once upon a time there was a ferry between the two Stockwiths :) Lovely to see you back on the Chesterfield. Have a nice, quiet cruise up to York :)
Thank you!
Awesome video as always enjoy them Great trip !! Love to see George he's adorable ! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you and we agree with you about George
As well as Stockwith there were ferries at Owston and Butterwick in the early 1900s

Wow that was an adventure…pleased to see you arrived safely 👍
Thank you. so are we.
Love it you two are great
Thank you.

Happy days indeed and what a great name for a boat.
great vlog cranking it on the cut thanks lee
Thank you.
I agree with the comment about George being more comfy below.
He gets very agitated below. The only place he wants to be is on the stern.

Good morning ❤️ 🙏
Morning Brenda
Perfectly done turn into the lock! I know George wants to be with you, but wouldn't he be more comfy down below??
He gets very agitated below. The only place he wants to be is on the stern. If we leave him inside he will come straight out.
Why Why Why! its nail biting!
It was not the most comfortable ride but we arrived safe and sound.

It last lifted in 1956. It was permanently fixed in position in 1960.

Thanks for the info. It seems like such a shame.
That's a big old river, I'll stick to my local Middle Level waterways.
It were really big waves😅
Well by narrowboat standards anyway.

Jo - didn't you mean "The wonderful wizard of Potter Hiegham"?
Ha, I might of done.
The bridge no longer lifts. Certainly for the last 40 years. Probably much longer.
What a shame. Although not for the road and rail traffic I guess.
The counter weight you commented on is a water tank. When needed it was filled with water eventually this would lift the bridge.
It last lifted in 1956. It was permanently fixed in position in 1960.
Bridge does not lift anymore , welded shut unfortunately
Thanks for the info. Sad times

I thought it was the Trent, not denial. Denial is in Egypt.
haha

You're not going in the Nile, you're going into the Trent. DeNile is in Africa.
Hahah
FYI I still do get notifications.
How annoying
Tidal rivers are not “treacherous”. They are simply……….. tidal
A vlog title of "The Tidal Trent" doesn't have the same appeal.
