Narrowboating up the tidal Trent | Keadby to Torksey Lock

  • In this part we take on the eerily calm (and bloody cold) tidal River Trent, setting off from Keadby Lock.
    All filmed on an iPhone 8+, edited using Adobe Premiere Pro (for the first time, phew). Apologies for the v/o sound level towards the end, couldn't be helped unfortunately.

    Ah, Keadby Bridge. I've driven over it so many times over the last forty five odd years. I once rowed in an "eight" at Gainsborough too, but home was in the other direction, north of Scunny at Burton-upon-Stather. Haven't been back now for twelve years.

    You picked the right day for your Trent River trip, it was like a mill pond.
    Don't expect any thing like that if you ever venture onto the Thames and pass through London it's self. The pleasure boats and high speed ribs raise quite a chop, especially if they are going against the tide.
    Next time you do a river trip make a flask of coffee/tea and have some sarnies to hand.
    Nice one.

    Great stuff! You've won me over Robbie with your swashbuckling style. Also loved the Sheffield vlog. I was never trying to be nasty with my original comment which seemed to irritate some. WOW I have to say WOW to the lovely work done on that mapping you did.. lol... I really thought that was cute & funny indeed. I was smiling all the way. What I didn't like, & I think most would agree with me, was all that muck going into that lock. You know it's bad when a tire can float on it. One would think that the river trust would get it cleaned up, bc one of those trees or 4x4 timbers & stuff we didn't see could get stuck in the system, get stuck in the gates & what ever else equipment there is in these lock systems plus to top if all off, YOUR BOAT & ENGINE. Now that would really piss me off if it damaged my boat in any way.
    It looked like your Dad was happy to CRANK IT UP WITH YA!! Lol... Those fish & chips looked good to. We call them fries here in the states.
    I was going to tell you that you should of been fishing while going down the river until I saw the trash @ that lock. You would be eating some rubber burgers instead of that golden brown fish @ the pub.. lol...
    We have some trashy rivers here to. I wish people would pick up there trash before they leave there spot on the bank. I'll take a big trash bag with me & if fish isn't bitting right @ that time I'll pick up some trash & haul it out in the bed of my truck. People don't care & there not going to like what I call them right now, but the truth hurts. There low life's that don't care for others they only care for there selves. I have the right to say it, bc I've had my foot cut open on the bottom of my foot, 26 stiches, on a broken bottle. I was about 14 yrs old. Trying to catch minnows to fish with. So the dumb ass who broke the bottle & threw it into the lake is nothing but a low life that one day it will come back & bite them in the ass. It was hard to walk & I was the point guard for are school basketball team & I went ahead & played,but it hurt so bad. Can't keep a good women down.. lol...
    I'm so happy that your Dad got to CRANK IT UP WITH YA. I can't CRANK IT UP WITH my Dad no more bc I lost him in 2007. But I have the memories to last me for the rest of my life. So every chance you get CRANK IT UP WITH HIM... OK!!!
    Best wishes to ya, Chris

    Loving it man, on the canal you may be cranking it, but on the rivers its rock n roll. Done the Trent a few times on a 60ft Sheffield barge many years ago, from Goole to both Lincoln and Nottingham, much better in summer than freezing your mushroom vents off like you too in winter. Looking forward to seeing your journey to Lincoln.

    13.5 hp? Damn, my lawn mower has more horsepower than that... Are all the areas around there speed limited or could someone go as fast as they wanted on the rivers?

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 років тому

      Your lawn mower probably goes faster too! Yeah maximum speed on rivers is 6mph, although ok some tidal rivers you end up going a lot faster in order to try and make it to the next lock before the tide turns.On the canals it’s 4mph, and even then we still have slow down further when coming across other boats, (especially those moored using mooring spikes), also ensuring your wash doesn’t damage the banks.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 років тому

      Where I go in my boat around here (rivers, lakes, and tidal areas), there's no speed limit, so I'm usually cruising around 30 kts unless the water is so rough that I can't drink a beer and steer at the same time. :) If the water is glass smooth, I might up it to 40 or so. The funny thing is though, my boat (a jet *boat* not a jet *ski*) produces less of a wake at speed than many boats do at there "no wake" speed because so little of it is in the water. The only time we have to slow down is when we are near docks / boat launches. But no one in their right mind would try to live aboard a small boat like mine. It would be like living out of a car -- and a Mini Cooper at that. :)

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 років тому

      Cool where do you have your boat (sorry bad memory, hence these vlogs!) 8^)

    How things have changed since the Cyclist and Ramblers Trust have took over.....back in BW days you wouldnt be allowed out without nav lights....its a long owd trip but not as scary as some narrowboaters would make you believe 👍🏻😳
