For those who don't know, this is a recreation of an Oiran Procession. The Oiran used to be the highest ranking courtesan in a brothel, and thus very expensive to hire. Men who had a lot of money and wanted to show it off, would hire the Oiran to come to them for the entire night, and they would do so in the most showy way possible. The really tall sandals (geta) were meant to make her visible from any point in the crowd.
In many cultures High platformed shoes or chairs have been used to signify status, especially in urban areas. Persians, Turks, French, Chinese and many more . Her step pattern is quite intriguing. The tallest platform shoes I’ve walked in were 3” but I’ve also worn 6” spikes. So I’m curious the mean behind the bending arched stepping.
@@Frugal_granny The pattern of walking is for show, but it is rooted in practicality as well. The geta are so tall that it was difficult for the Oiran to lift them off the ground and not lose balance, so they dragged them instead. Since the entire point of the Oiran Procession was to be as attention-catching as possible, they came up with that slow, sensuous movement in figures of eight. Rewatching this video it seems this particular performer was lifting her feet off the ground, even if not much, but others I've seen drag the geta fully. That’s sad, because kimetsu no yaiba heavily over sexualised this tradition and didn’t even represent it properly. Most westerners should already know about geisha (unless they’re truly uncultured). Geisha aren’t just prostitutes like that demon was made to seem like. They were highly trained entertainers and this lady is the highest ranking one (she has a whole different title), this is the process of a rich guy (this is likely a recreation) asking for the highest ranked girl and how she would make her way to him for the whole night. This never happened on a daily basis and only one girl in that brothel/area would have such a high ranking.
@@KawaiiKermitBut it didn’t though…. It quite literally showed nothing sexual all we knew was that guys paid for the night with the top ranked one and it was far from cheap. To add to that the others in the brothel didn’t do anything either you had what that one drunk dude that probably slept with one but besides that the entire beginning of that arc was the dudes being trained to be graceful which obviously didn’t work out lol they were cross dressing and investigating a demon. Passively mentioning the fact that they sometimes slept with people isn’t over sexualizing something. Not to mention Daki is Daki…. We’re not gonna pretend she was holding up their standards anyway right even the building owners gave the best girl whatever she wanted and forced nothing. We only heard of the arranged marriage.
@@KawaiiKermitdemon slayer…barely touched on it though. To be honest it was barely a factor . I understand what your trying to say but in the end demon slayer didn’t reallly do much. Also…why should westerners know? Do Japanese people know every bit of western knowledge. It’s not like this is taught in American schools. In the grand scheme of it all, it’s nice to know but completely irrelevant to most people.

@@pelican4198 What you are referring to are Geisha that start out as Maiko at that age. Shouldn't walk around just claiming random stuff, it makes you look incredibly dumb. And to then specifically talk about "this level", not seeing the major imperfections when it came to the presentation of the foot, which was a highly erotic thing back then...just don't write about stuff you don't understand, ever. Very easy to avoid. This is very most likely an actress and not a Geisha.
Actually these are basically fancy prostitutes. They’re trained in how to hold themselves and also many are taught to develop skills so they can be entertainers. It’s an interesting culture but still, they’re prostitutes. While the outfits are gorgeous if you look into a lot of the points behind some of the stylistic pieces (particularly the way of how the hair is styled) you’ll probably find it incredibly disturbing and demeaning. While it is disturbing, without the history or knowledge behind them they are really pretty.

The Orange County Japan Fair in California has this procession included in it, among other events if you're ever in the area. Not as grand as the one in the video though.
So cool that they do reenactments of this! I've read about the parading with clients down the streets and how a 10 minute walk would turn into a 1 hour spectacle and I always wondered what special way of walking they used and what it looked like. I would love to visit and see a reenactment in person one day.
Both were sorry excuses and giant divergences of real buyo. Watch shogo and his wife. He even met an oiran on video. They hardly ever did the bangbang. Shogo explains this well. And even had a video where he met one who kept the deep traditions alive. They were keepers of lore and so much more. Actually they were the most intelligent and talented and well read. They’d even advise all the lords and even the emperors. She had the power to refuse any sex at all from anyone.
Memoirs of a Geisha sullied the geisha profession to the point that the geisha that was consulted for the movie refused to want anything to do with the movie. The producers basically ignored all her wishes and did a LOT of cultural misappropriation and over sexualisation for a sensational story. Geisha did not sell their bodies. Throw your comment away about Memoirs of a Geisha, it is unpleasant. Memoirs of a Geisha is as nasty as saying Taylor Swift is a seggs worker

Flats are hardly condusive to good support girl. Use spongy support! Or you will wish you had when you reach my age.
@@SoundofSilence492it is the arch that helps. I have good arch strong legs even though pain in knees. I used to run in platforms, stilletos, clogs. Still can wear them at 63.👍🇨🇦
Look at her expressions. She looks so confident, even in a situation that a smallest error could ruin all!
Increíble 😮. Desde Ecuador 🇪🇨 tan lejos poder ver esto. Como quisiera poder hacerlo en persona ❤
This is beautiful. She is talented and must have practiced. Using her foot muscles to keep the platform sandals on, walking gracefully in a high platform, wearing many layers and making it look effortless! ❤
That and every facial expression looks masterfully displayed

😊 thank you for sharing interesting information ❤😊
And in addition...I understand her headpiece is quite heavy too. Huge respect for the entire procession. Plus over the top gorgeous! 🙏with a half bow.
Demon Slayer put me into knowing this tradition. I just truly love it.
Showing off the biggest whore in the district 😂😂😂😂😂
That’s sad, because kimetsu no yaiba heavily over sexualised this tradition and didn’t even represent it properly. Most westerners should already know about geisha (unless they’re truly uncultured). Geisha aren’t just prostitutes like that demon was made to seem like. They were highly trained entertainers and this lady is the highest ranking one (she has a whole different title), this is the process of a rich guy (this is likely a recreation) asking for the highest ranked girl and how she would make her way to him for the whole night. This never happened on a daily basis and only one girl in that brothel/area would have such a high ranking.
@@KawaiiKermit sounds like One Piece
Truly a beautiful display of art and culture
😂🤣👻🤪🫢😂😅🥺😱🫢😵💫👻
Well put!!
Sehr gut beobachtet. 😊
The way she blinks, walks, smiles is so confident and elegant, she's so pretty!
Beautiful and very impressive how she can walk in those shoes and look graceful
It’s like watching puppet show. Very interesting culture
They must be professional actors who put into a lot of hard work. Just perfect performance!
Most of the women that do this start training at around 15-16, it's years and years of hard work and dedication to get to this level.
I absolutely love the Oiran recreations 🫶🫶🥺
History is my favorite hobby and Oirans have always fascinated me and saddened me. The recreations are always a privilege and joy to see.
The Orange County Japan Fair in California has this procession included in it, among other events if you're ever in the area. Not as grand as the one in the video though.
She's so beautiful!!
VERY BEAUTIFUL, ALL OF IT !!!
Wow! She is so beautiful, but I was captivated by here eyes and slightly sly smile. She is so very alluring!

The way my mouth dropped and I just stared at her in amazement, she's so pretty, like I wish I could see one of these in person, she's gorgeous!!
Her job is to be pretty because she is the highest ranking prostitute.
Imagine how much practice it takes to walk that gracefully, artfully even, in those!
I used to practice qi gong. She is basically doing that. It's amazing how people come up with various forms of moving meditation
So beautiful!!! All the different cultures around the world are just stunning!!!
No lie. That is awesome. Wow I don’t know why but everything about this sounds and looks so cool

Solo le gheishe avevano tal usanze.
So cool that they do reenactments of this! I've read about the parading with clients down the streets and how a 10 minute walk would turn into a 1 hour spectacle and I always wondered what special way of walking they used and what it looked like. I would love to visit and see a reenactment in person one day.

I enjoy learning and watching cultural rituals.
Such beauty and grace! I love this. It took me back to the book, "Memoirs of a Geisha." 😍
You might also try the movie "Sakuran"
One of my most favorite books that I have read for sure
