I scanned through the comments quick and didn't see this mentioned. Never run the engine with drive trimmed up more than halfway. It will smoke that gimbal bearing. Also the reason marine fuel pumps are different is because when an automotive pump diaphram leaks it can weep fuel out through a hole. Gas fumes settle into the bilge and stay there, so big badda boom if fuel vapor meets ignition. That drive will probably be a milkshake because what likely happened was a shaft seal went out at some point and the water got into the gearcase and cracked it when it froze. So that problem is probably still there. Run it as long as it's fun, and then when it's not put a bigger engine in.

@JunkyardDigs quick tip from the u.k ...your dewalt angle grinder... undo the 4 hex bolts at the top of the body where the motor attaches... rotate motor 90 degrees and refit... makes it more balanced...easier to control and feels lighter
Dude! In spite of how it started out, this actually turned out being 1000% worth it! After starting out going so easy on it, Im pretty sure it got to where it wasn't smoking hardly at all! (that I could see anyway) It was DEF smoking like a train at first, maybe that little engine came back around once it actually got a heafty dose of your TLC and attention. Here's hoping the little boat and the little engine that could decides to hang around for a while, cuz watching you and Mook have fun together was priceless!
I'm not sure if you've figured this out, yet, but you never start up the engine without having water hooked up to the outdrive because you will burn up your water impeller. It didn't hurt you because you tore it all down anyway, but they make "earmuffs" that you can hook up to a garden hose and they slide over the water intakes. When you hook that hose up to the water pump on the front of the engine you're only running water through the engine. You need the earmuffs hooked up to the outdrive so it runs water through your impeller in the outdrive, just like it's actually in the water. Also, your skeg is broken off the lower unit. You can buy one from a Mercruiser dealer and take it to a welder and have them weld it on and probably weld that crack.
Free boat ye right!!! In mint condition. Love the barnyard finds and paddock discoveries that are suppose to be there for 10 years and they miraculously come up pristine with a pressure clean and engines startup first attempt with minor adjustments. Very far from reality especially here in Australia.
this sooooo explains and shows exactly what you get into when you buy (or get a free) used boat. I had a friend tell me "You know what you got there huh? A hole in the water that you throw money into." Couldn't be a more true statement. I have owned one one boat. And it was used. And I spent alot of time and money getting it water ready. So I thought. Got her ready to go.. went out (had a great time) and almost didn't make it back to the dock because of another issue that popped up. This happened 3 times. I'd fix a problem, take it out, and a new problem would arise. Finally got tired of it. Sold it as is. Learned alot about boats, but that's about it. Not a fun time at all.
Well if by any chance the impeller was still good, it isnt anymore...lol😂 Got to hook up those muffs on the outdrive before starting it my man. Also, just a tip for the future restores on boats. If you pull the hose off by the thetmostat that runs down to the drive, or from the drive to the thermostat, and dump some antifreeze down that hose with the drive down, youll eventually see some off that antifreeze coming out of the drive by the water pickup. If you do that, the antifreeze will help to lubricate that impeller before starting it. Antifreeze is kinda slippery like that and works well to help that rubber impeller to spin without sticking to the housing. You should always check the lower unit lube as well before staring and throwing it in gear. The unit may have leaked and you definitely dont want it spinning without oil or you will cost yourself a ton of money for not checking it first.
Kevin, big fan. I’ve seen a couple of your boat videos the last few days. I really suggest you don’t run these boats with a rubber impeller sea water cooling pump without a hose hooked up. The plastic and rubber pump is ruined almost instantly without water. You did this on the maroon Century also. The boat will overheat on the water as the burned sea water pump won’t push water up to the block and the conventional iron circulation pump.
You guys came out pretty good on that boat! 2 weeks isn't bad for a freebie. I say give that rig the love it deserves. I'd love to see the motor get fixed up or whatever it needs, new outdrive seals, a few cool bells and whistles. Love the channel guys, keep up the awesome work! Cheers!

@@gplugt7960 the engine needs a new block..but hey..Freeboat is game..lol
Enjoyed the boat work... always enjoy the automotive, but the agricultural and snowmobile/atv is always interesting... thanks
Kevin, I think this one deserves a new motor and maybe a drive unit! It’s a good unit
good unit?..did you not see all the rot Kevin pulled out?..if it's that rotten back there then it's also in the rest of the wood...best thing for this boat is a little pond or lake and just cruise it until it quits
Holy crap! @9:20 I could smell the exhaust fumes!!!
Impeller smoked after no water
Great video, you gave that boat some love for sure. Dad saves the day with his unsurpassed knowledge on fiberglass and everything worked out perfectly. Glad to see you get out on the water and relax after a long 2 weeks.
Hey man I hope the old man is doing good. Loved the variety of content
Aaaah the labouring fruits! Sweeeet.
Jyd did cars, atvs, snowmobiles, farm equipment, and now I think it's time they get their wings. Please do an airplane
If he did a plane, it would be the last episode ever
@@jaySilverE34 I hope not but lol 😂
Nice job Kevin, very entertaining and informative, a Junkyard Digs classic!! Enjoy the fruits of your labor my friend.
I had a free boat once, I opted to prefer a friend with a boat 😂
Really loving these boating videos, a nice break from the norm (along with the Farming series)
Kevin, I'm taking your word on the Raycons. I've ordered mine finally and I've used your code. They come in monday. Fingers crossed they work great! I Think they will lol.
They don't... they're terrible, why do you think you never actually see UA-camrs wearing them, if anything they wear airpods... never trust someone that advertises something they don't use themselves..
I bought some on black Friday and love them
@@BariLopesh Don't know till you try them.
@@caseyramseyer9874 Good to know. Thank you.
i got a pair of raycons when he started getting their sponsorships a few years ago. they're still kicking and not too bad for the price. better then airpods imo
Great video as always. Hope your Dad is ok after his surgery!
The happiest day of your life is the day you buy a boat...
The second happiest day of your life is when you sell that boat...
Good morning this was a different video and in my opinion that boat was definitely worth it. You now have a nice boat that you can enjoy on the water.
Say goodbye to the plastic impeller in the lower unit. Always have a water hose connected.
Congrats on the 1m well deserved. One of my favourite videos to date. More boat, wrap it and do some nautical upgrades. Stay safe J.
I am happy to see you both looking relaxed and enjoying the fruits of everyone’s labour.
@JunkyardDigs quick tip from the u.k ...your dewalt angle grinder... undo the 4 hex bolts at the top of the body where the motor attaches... rotate motor 90 degrees and refit... makes it more balanced...easier to control and feels lighter
My husband and I bought a basket case boat and rebuilt everything and loved that thing and spent many hours aboard and loved it. Thanks for sharing
here we go straight to the dock 40 MPH and on the trailer here we go haha
Seeing that Mercury Tracer in the backround was easily one of my favourite parts~ It's rare to see ones that haven't been completely abused.
Well if by any chance the impeller was still good, it isnt anymore...lol😂
Got to hook up those muffs on the outdrive before starting it my man.
Great job, happy boating. But remember...a boat is just a hole in the water you just keep throwing money into..😉
You guys came out pretty good on that boat! 2 weeks isn't bad for a freebie. I say give that rig the love it deserves. I'd love to see the motor get fixed up or whatever it needs, new outdrive seals, a few cool bells and whistles. Love the channel guys, keep up the awesome work! Cheers!
