What made me, who used to game about 5 hours a day, quit video games was being busy with other things. Everyday I'm working on my music and programming ventures and it leaves no time for video games. Last game I played was MWII on the day it came out. I played for 3 hours and had fun, but that was it. Be busy with leveling up your real self.

And video games are also proven to improve memory, creativity, focus, critical thinking, reaction time, languages and strategy. They can still stimulate areas of the brain just like reading a book can. Do I really have to force myself to play an instrument or paint a painting every day? And video games are not garbage either they are an art form. And I know your probably gonna roll your eyes at this but its true! Video games can have amazing storys just like a book can. I see so many people denying others the leisure of video games in the comments down below. "Use the time to build your business" If you are keeping busy with work etc. all day and want to relax for an hour and game go ahead bro. The keyword is *moderation*. Work first, then play.
As an example, typically my day goes like this and right now I am single. This does gives me more control over my schedule:
    *Mo-Fr*
7AM - 8AM: Wake and get ready for the day (prepare lunch, shower,...)
8AM - 6PM: Work (This includes commute, if I am not working remote)
6PM - 7PM: Gym (Though this is every other day, usually three days a week, sometimes I'll pop in for some quick cardio which adds more days visited)
7PM - 8PM: Prepare dinner and eat (I'll often listen to podcasts or something similar in nature on the side. Jordan Peterson, Russel Brand etc. are interesting)
    8PM - 10PM: Leisure
10PM - 11PM: Reading (Mostly things that will take me further in life like The Naked Leader, The Comfort Crisis... Right now I am having fun reading Wheel of Time)
    *Sa-So*
Whatever I want to do. Go to a place for breakfast, work on my social media ideas, go on a trip and find new things (museums, thermal baths, motorcycling), buy groceries,... You get the idea.
Since gym is every other day it can shift my day a little bit here and there. Allowing for spontaneous adjustments. I thankfully do not have to work weekends.
My leisure can be anything from editing photos, watching UA-cam etc. Often something in front of a screen but it's not the rule. I still play games here and there. Steam says I played 5 hours in the past two weeks. Video games are *not* the devil. Although they are designed to make you play more and more, at the end of the day *you* are the one in control. It doesn't matter how many casino tricks they play on you. If you are noticing its not helping in any form or fashion: WALK OUT. "Control yourself or someone else will"
But know this! Any achievement in a video game is bullshit, despite the dopamine in your brain saying you did something. It bares no meaning in the real world... but so do many other hobbies. Life is complex.

  • @reddnorth5105
    @reddnorth5105 Рік тому +7

Actually the argument can go both ways.
Guy1: "I went to the gym for 3 hours while you played video games for 3 hours."
Guy 2:"Well at least I actually did something fun. Why do you need big muscles. You're not a pro athlete. They're just for your own satisfaction. I play video games for my satisfaction."
Guy 1"im going out to the bar/social area with my friends"
Guy 2: "I'm gonna play video games online with my friends. I'm going to have an equal amount of fun, an equal amount of social experience, and spend way less money."
I could go on. Addiction comes in many forms. Some are more harmful than others. Getting addicted to the gym can be more harmful than video game addiction.

Yet for the past 2 weeks despite these changes and leaving college/highschool I have reverted back to playing videogames like league and rust. I wake up, go to the gym, come home play rust and then go to work, come home, play rust until 3 and then sleep. Videogames are actually detrimental. This video is 100% right, every aspect of successful videogames, give you a false detrimental version of things like brotherhood, success and achievement. I don’t want to be a clan leader in rust, I want to be a leader in real life. One of the reasons I don’t wanna quit right now too, is that me and my friends are mid way through a wipe on a server in rust, I have all the BPS, today we were planning on upgrading the base, taking cargos and gaining other high tier loot. The ultimate achievement next to raiding big bases. But I want to quit right now, not log on. I used to be play lots of sports until I got entangled in WoW with some friends. After a few years of what you have described, I quit and went back to sports: 100k+ mountain races, Iron Man, alpinism, rock climbing, cross country ski...you name it, I've done it. All that while having a good job, a wife, raising a daughter, learning a 3rd language, etc.
And now, at 47 yo, I'm back to playing video games. Cos the same way as for MMORPG, leveling up yourself does also get old. You get to a point in which you have challenged yourself so many times and succeeded, that you understand you basically can succeed in almost anything if you are willing to put the necesssary time and effort.
So nowadays I play New World and have fun. I also do mountaneering, skiing, OCR races, mountain races, etc. cos its also fun.
Because you reach an age in your life that you understand life is not about leveling up, ingame or IRL. It's about doing what makes you happy. So play video games if that makes you happy. Just make sure what you are feeling while playing is true happiness and not a temporary satisfaction for getting a legendary item or a useless title....that's the key.

9:50 Big facts. Personally, I really get into Resident Evil, Skyrim, Fallout, Tekken, Red Dead Redemption 2, etc. and I’ll play video games like it’s a full time job and get overtime + sacrifice sleep just to spend more time playing video games. Video games become so addictive that it’s self-destructive. I really can’t wait for that Resident Evil 4 Remake coming out in March. After addressing my problem, I want to go a week without gaming while putting more time into working out, martial arts, reading, meditating and see how I’ll feel. If you’re playing a video game for an hour, you’re probably playing virtual chess and you’d probably get bored and quit in the first 20 minutes.

My motto has been party now or party later.
    So I have had a problem working to much. 12 - 13 hours a day 5 to 7 days a week.
Then come home and play video games as it was cheaper than cable, more entertaining and cheaper than real hobbies.
Got a house at 25 (me n the bank) and rebuilt just about the whole place room by room on my time off from work.
Now I am 40 and semi retired.
Gaming most of the days away on old games that are on sale.
I rent rooms out so I don't really have to work anymore.
Had some long term relationships but didn't last much more than 6 or 7 years.
No kids as my pull out game is/was strong! Now with my little nest egg I can't afford to be with a woman as it could cost me half.
    Got 2 motorcycles instead!
Now I hibernate all winter and help family members in the nicer weather.
Single player games have been a big part of my life (intervened and lived out in the sticks) never did the online stuff as it was more expensive or it wasn't available out in the country.
But to be honest video games have gotten bad. Great games are one in a hundred. And I can't play stuff twice. Just like my ex's.
You are right about balance though. Worked so much I lost contact with anyone I knew and half my old friends have died or moved away (overdose and self deletion is real) So to much of anything is bad. Glad I got my 16 and 20 hour shifts done when I was young cause I could never do that now, but I lost out on so many parties cause I had to work. Christmas with the family, nope double time and a half at work...
Just smoke weed,, work and drink myself to sleep while playing vids.
Balance things as to much of anything is bad.

At the start of this year I was either using every spare minute to play WoW or trying to quit and utterly miserable. In August I ended up getting a new job in a different state and haven’t looked back. Spare time goes into additional study or going out with friends. I can’t overstate how much happier I am. Some times when you want to make a big change in life you have to take big swings. For me will power was never going to be enough. I needed to completely change my environment.

There is something we agree on, I would be like a boy if I would make thing just in the sake of your compliance. If I simply love to play videogame at max you could say I'm a nihilist. There is nothing to be proud of in stopping to play VG in itself. The issue is not the VG but the obsession itself, something that could be catalyzed with everything. The solution is working on yourself otherwise one could just jump form VG to something else.

Work hard then reward yourself. That is the key. How you reward yourself usually doesnt matter if the hard work was worth it. We could argue a true man should not even be on UA-cam or Social media watching the lives of other men, they should be offline building themselves but here we are on this video proving we need variety when we rest. You cant just read books or go out everyday as a way to reward yourself in your rest time. So playing a game for 30 mins to an hour and still using the remaining 14hrs productively can surely not be a problem.

Controlling addiction is important, but to say that it's objectively bad is to bring hate upon all forms of hobbies. Eventually you reach a purity spiral until nothing is good enough anymore.

I go back to unwanted habits etc … i mean the making the bed or cleaning room is good to get into the flow but i don’t need to clean my room every day 😂 + sometimes I‘m just not in the mood to live this day like its part of the journey becoming a better me … I think just a minute long video in the morning which reminds me of the benefit getting myself together would help with that :) And having multiple videos, to not watch the same video every day would be great😉 and on the other hand one minute is short enough to start the day with (5 minutes every day would already bee too long I think and you also may dont have so much different stuff to say if it would be 5 min long videos)

This is a valuable lesson to anyone genuinely addicted to video games and/or has lack of motivation/ambition and/or does not have as successful a life as they thought they might have by the age they are. However, I do have some points to make to counter your arguments:
1 - Your statement that balance doesn't exist and/or moderation is key doesn't really apply I really have to disagree with you there. You stated the scenario that many video game addicts are low achievers academically, don't progress into good careers or aren't achieving anything whatsoever in life. Reality check for you - I grew up with video games from like age 4 or 5 on the Sega Master System and have had every Playstation console since my first in 1996 (age 8 - I'm presuming that I'm slightly older than you based on the games you mentioned here). The fact is, I was an absolute whiz kid at school and blitzed my primary school getting 5 5 5 in English Maths and Science with barely any revision; I was able to perfectly balance my love of video games with academic success as well as having a good social circle at the time as well as enjoying other things like TV and films. Through to secondary school I achieved 13 GCSEs, all of them were A*, A or B grades except for one C grade which was in Art (and my least tuned in subject overall because it was more subjective than objective. I got A in both English Language and Literature, A in Maths, Bs in Double Science, etc) then for my A Levels I got BBC in DIFFICULT A Levels of Physics, IT and Maths (as opposed to some people that choose intellectually less challenging subjects for example). I got a 2:1 degree in Business Admin and Maths and have worked for a Stockbroker/private bank since I graduated in 2010 and have more than doubled my salary in that time. I'm now within touching distance of a promotion that's going to take me from £35k (+ annual bonus) up to £55k (+ annual bonus) which is on schedule for April. Once I attain this I will be firmly in the top 5-10% of earnings for men of my age group. And not only this because of my industry I've invested into the stock market since 2011 and made a great return since then while also getting my own mortgage and nice car. I have proven that you can be successful while still playing video games so PLEASE do not simply make the naive correlation that just because you enjoy video games must mean you must be a loser in real life. Correlation does not equal causation. On top of this, I have a balanced life of social (friends and family), I'm a self taught guitarist since age 15 and play open mic nights approx once every 1 or 2 months and am enjoying life.
2 - Men are very able to change their ways and addictions can be addressed. Women on the other hand tend to be addicted to validation, social acceptance, people/relationships, social media, and to an extent their appearance/make up. All these things are rife these days amongst women yet nobody bats an eyelid or says anything negative about it, because if you do you're being sexist or you simply offend the women by stating raw facts. Women's social media experience is universally different to men - they predominantly take selfies, they get countless comments and attention from men, and spend a lot of time chatting with their peers and or discussing things publically. Men on the other hand do not get anywhere near the same level of attention from women, we don't spend hours every day discussing things on the platforms nor do we focus so much on presenting ourselves and our image for validation. We don't seek validation from other people, we just do whatever we feel like, whether it's posting memes, sharing our success stories, capturing funny or inspirational stuff, etc. If you were to ask women to give up their smartphones, makeup and all social media platforms in the way you are telling men to give up video games, there would be absolute uproar. Tying back into my first point moderation is key here for BOTH genders. Girls should not be spending excessive amounts of time on social media, they shouldn't be posting hundreds and thousands of selfies and they shouldn't be wearing excessive amounts of makeup. Likewise guys shouldn't be spending excessive amounts of time on video games or watching adult content or drinking, etc. Moderation is absolutely critical here and going cold turkey seriously can be more dangerous than simply moderating something.
3 - You yourself here mentioned specific cases of guys who quit video games then took up the gym and got all the girls. Please don't pretend that we're stupid or unaware. Going to the gym ON IT'S OWN does not make you get all the girls. Being a gym fanatic makes you come across as self obsessed and a type of guy that simply would never have time for anyone else in his life, including a special woman. This is off putting to many women and SO back to balance, girls respect guys that keep in shape 100%, but you should not be spending multiple hours a day at the gym because it's obsessive and almost an addiction as well. As long as your shape isn't obese, your fitness is decent (you can run and can walk up flights of stairs without getting out of breath) then you're already doing better than around 50% of other men. You should aim to try and be in the best shape you can within time that allows. It's relatively easy to get your initial gains, such as your arms and getting slightly more broad shoulders and becoming a bit more lean, but then after that every turn percentage improvement becomes exponentially more difficult. So to go from the top 20% of men's bodies into the top 10% requires basically going to the gym 5 days a week AND being extremely disciplined in what you eat and having repeated meals months and months consecutively just to get into that optimal shape... even then your genetics play some part so in order to become genuinely top 5% you need to have luck on your side that your body can genetically give you the ideal perfect male body as if like a chiseled Roman statue. Reality check - this won't be possible for the majority of men!
Ending again more generally on balance and moderation. You as a UA-cam content creator obviously do not spend 6-8 hours a day, every day, making hour long videos and editing them because that would be excessive. Likewise I wouldn't expect you to spend 2-3 hours a day, every day at the gym. Because you have recognised that balance is key and if you spent too much time at the gym you wouldn't have time to make your UA-cam content and conversely if you spent too much time making UA-cam content you wouldn't have enough time left for the gym. In conclusion yes you can still play video games as long as you are still doing things in real life and seeing real actual results and positive outcomes from your actions and decisions across your whole life so far 👌

Things just gradually changed for me and life has never been better. I still play games now and then, but I can’t get myself to play for much more than 1 hour every few days.
    Plus, life has better graphics.

I was once addicted to video games, now I only really play 3 games. Squad (Open world realistic shooter, no level system), RDR2 story mode (Just an amazing game altogether it looks brilliant), and also Doom (I like the soundtrack and fast paced action)

Is it ok to play games that are board games on my phone? I like a game called Senet, it’s a game that is 5,000 years old and first invented by the Egyptians. It is very strategic, and almost entirely luck. It’s supposed to symbolize life, you don’t know if you succeeded until the end. I only spend 10 minutes at most on it. But I used to play video games all the time, I’m barley even a teenager, but I know it’s bad. I quit a little while ago, and all the time I played online, I now spend that time working out, practicing football (soccer), and studying Egyptology. Your channel has helped me in some ways, so I want to say thanks.

You can play any games as much as you want as long as it isn't effecting you're life like you have no time to workout or to spend time with family etc cause of games that's different thing. As long as you're doing everything on you're free times you can play any games

You'd be proud of me, Pappa Hamza.
I'm a maxed player in RS, worth 6 billion gp. I achieved all by RS goals. Then I switched. I'm 31, married, 4 young sons, making well over 6 figs and crushing my career and making a huge difference in my area of the world. Happy to be a good Runescape player. But crushing real life is priceless.

I play video games occasionally, I’m usually too busy with school or some other shit. I still love the idea of gaming but anytime I get on I feel depressed, tired, and bored. I guess I still get on because as a kid it was so important to me and I don’t want that passion to die, but realistically it already has.

What if you play to escape the world? For me when I play games like HL2, Witcher 1,2,3, Skyrim. I play for a story. In real life nobody care about you. But in games you can feel something.

I love Dark Souls, it is like my life. Might play the "new one" (Eldion Ring, I think). Grind to be better but still I am in the same spot in life.
