Absolutely! Better technique (hereunder speed) is just more mental and physical headroom too. The more comfortable you are with it, the less you have to worry about it.

A- Stevie Ray Vaughn (particularly scuttle buttin)
B- Les Paul's (particularly in the world waiting for the sunrise)
    C- The entire jazz-fusion world.
speed and accuracy are signs of mastery of the instrument, not linked to any particular style)

My biggest obstacle with speed is tension which I found out the hard way after fighting myself for 30 years. Guess it’s just part of my journey.

It seems so obvious but it wasn’t to me at first lol. I practice rock techniques often because it helps me with my Jazz playing, I don’t shred or rip arpeggios but I practice those techniques so I can do them if the need comes

A great way to teach your self speed (plus work it out) I just do hammer offs with my pinky, after a while interject other fingers (which ever finger and however someone feels comfortable) slowly run left to right on the fret board to get a better feel for moving your hand on it. That’s just how I did it though, and I’m no teacher lol. Everyone learns different

I wonder if at least some of the people who tend to express, let's say, anti-shredder sentiments do so because they would actually like to be able to shred if they could, but they're not sure if they can. Or, if at least it seems easier to dismiss the "style" than to attempt it and risk failure.

People who can't shred is just lazy, they don't want to spend 6 to 8 hours a day to practice, all they want is do bending all day and play their favorite riffs over and over until they break a string.
