I was born and raised to adulthood in a Communist country (Eastern Bloc). Shortly after I arrived in the US, people here would often ask me if there was anything that I found disappointing about America. I've always given them the same answer: Americans take for granted what they have. After twenty more years, I still give them the same answer.

U need to realize how good the west was before compared to how it is today. But you cant because you grow up in communist country so this place even in the year 2000 is paradise for you but it had already come a very long way from how it was we already had freedom we have an entire millenial and Genx generation that got denied the right to work and retire because they send the jobs to china... now this generation will be homeless.... your perspective is just that of a former slave so you think its good here. Errrrr you fine living in a kleptocracy? US is dropping in the Democratic index and the lifestyle is becoming like what the Soviet Union was in the 80s. There is a large wealth gap, not many Americans have access to health care, education is expensive, vocational training schools shutting down, US spends too much on the military, endless wars, a politburo of democrats and republicans who are very similar on political spectrum except on social issues, whistle blowers being arrested, poor health, too much processed food, homelessness, gun violence, opioid abuse, poor infrastructure… I was born in a democratic country that NOT the US, and we are starting to receive an exodus of Americans migrating here.

Same here, but was only there for almost two years. It's very hard to explain to people who haven't been to China exactly how it is there. My experience directly wasn't bad, but for someone to state that America is worse, or just as bad, is outright ignorant. Many of the systems in place are so convoluted and unnecessarily complex and it just makes everyday life a hassle. Well…How is it possible the CCP is going after Li Yundi for prostitution when the CCP is the largest user of prostitutes on the planet? The CCP’s “honeypot” program is well known to overseas diplomats who are provided with “company” while in Beijing…just ask Daniel Andrews from Australia. He’s taken advantage of the “honeypot” program a number of times. And he’s not alone. Party members have a number of exclusive clubs and resorts in the Changping district of Beijing. These “fun palaces” provide government officials with wine, escorts from Russia and China, dining, and entertainment. I’ve personally been to one and seen the decadence and the high end prostitutes provided for party members. Some netizens on Weibo are putting forth the theory that the CCP approached Li Yundi to spy for them and he declined to do so. As we all know, nobody says “NO” to the CCP, so they started a well organized smear campaign against him.

Maybe it's because I grew up during the Cold War and laughed at the terrible Soviet propaganda, but the latest incarnation of Chinese propaganda has never fooled me. Those impeccably choreographed parades and celebrations are exactly like the propaganda that has come out of North Korea for years, and similar displays came out of the Soviet Union and its satellites on a regular basis. Those displays are nothing more than a veneer that hides the underlying rot, and the cheerful people present at these events are most likely among the privileged in society - those who benefit from the system and have reason to be happy. Or perhaps they put on an act because they know they will be shot if they don't play along. Sometimes, these events are fun to watch, and when they feature propaganda music, it can even be enjoyable because the musicians are usually quite talented even if the words and imagery are ridiculous.
The United States has a lot of problems right now, and we will be in big trouble in the long run if we continue to let these problems fester, but the situation must be kept in perspective. Countries like China and North Korea are far worse, and we have a long way to fall before our situation will even begin to resemble theirs. In a way, I hope China scares us out of our collective bickering. Maybe we need something like a Sputnik moment to spur us toward some semblance of unity and a willingness to invest in our future. We got a great deal of benefit out of the explosion in scientific research resulting from the space race. China has been willing to make large investments in infrastructure, even if these projects have been poorly executed and are likely to fall apart in a relatively short time. We can only hope that the quality of their military is up to the same standards as their construction projects, but I wouldn't count on it - the military is likely a higher priority. We need to repair and update our infrastructure - and take the time and spend the money necessary to do it right so that our investments won't fall apart in five years.
I hope China gets a better government one day. The people have suffered long enough, and they deserve better. I also hope that the United States gets a better government one day, but I'm not holding my breath. Still, I will happily take ours, with all its faults, over theirs.

I have spoken to many Chinese students who have told me pretty much what you've said. Some of them believe everything the government tells them as well. One student was mortified when I told her that knife attacks on school children were a lot more common than she thought. Another wanted to debate about safety in China and when I told her that violence happens everywhere and knife attacks happen, she immediately attacked America for shootings. I then told her, "yes, there are shootings in America, that's bad right?" In which she happily replied "yes, very bad" I then said "so, why aren't knife attacks bad?" She was silent. Couldn't say anything. I then continued to say "Do not think just because it happens in America that it's ok for it to happen in China. If it's bad, it's bad, regardless of where it happens." I stressed that she'd lost her debate because she'd used one bad thing to try and cancel another. I also stated, "I am not from America anyway, so it was a pointless comment" - many Chinese people become so defensive instead of saying "Yes, it's bad, we need to do something about it". Another student couldn't believe that the Chinese emperor's terracotta warriors may have had help from the west, notibly Greece. He was almost in tears and would not accept it. It's difficult for them to accept something different from the propaganda that is spewed.

I also said that all countries have problems, if you read the dialogue regarding the young lady who wanted to debate. Lastly, I don't think saying something is wrong signifies 'bullying'. Most people don't really hate the country. America is one of those few countries where we are allowed to complain and it actually makes a difference. One of the things I'd say China holds better than United states are they don't really bother you so long as you literally do not bother them. Things like victimless crime are not really a crime per se. For example street hookers most likely would get pulled over by the cops, but if they keep it in a building, even if everyone knows, no one cares. This is different from amsterdam where prostitution is legal.

Black Book of Communism,” an estimated 65 million Chinese died as a result of Mao’s repeated, merciless attempts to create a new “socialist” China. Anyone who got in his way was done away with -- by execution, imprisonment or forced famine..
For Mao, the number 1 enemy was the intellectual. The so-called Great Helmsman reveled in his blood-letting, boasting, “What’s so unusual about Emperor Shih Huang of the China Dynasty? He had buried alive 460 scholars only, but we have buried alive 46,000 scholars.” Mao was referring to a major “accomplishment” of the Great Cultural Revolution, which from 1966-1976 transformed China into a great House of Fear.
The most inhumane example of Mao’s contempt for human life came when he ordered the collectivization of China’s agriculture under the ironic slogan, the “Great Leap Forward.” A deadly combination of lies about grain production, disastrous farming methods (profitable tea plantations, for example, were turned into rice fields), and misdistribution of food produced the worse famine in human history.
Deaths from hunger reached more than 50 percent in some Chinese villages. The total number of dead from 1959 to 1961 was between 30 million and 40 million.
    Rounding up enemies
Only five years later, when he sensed that revolutionary fervor in China was waning, Mao proclaimed the Cultural Revolution. Gangs of Red Guards -- young men and women between 14 and 21 -- roamed the cities targeting revisionists and other enemies of the state, especially teachers.
Professors were dressed in grotesque clothes and dunce caps, their faces smeared with ink. They were then forced to get down on all fours and bark like dogs. Some were beaten to death, some even eaten -- all for the promulgation of Maoism. A reluctant Mao finally called in the Red Army to put down the marauding Red Guards when they began attacking Communist Party members, but not before 1 million Chinese died.
All the while, Mao kept expanding the laogai, a system of 1,000 forced labor camps throughout China. Harry Wu, who spent 19 years in labor camps, has estimated that from the 1950s through the 1980s, 50 million Chinese passed through the Chinese version of the Soviet gulag. 20 million died as a result of the primitive living conditions and 14-hour work days.
And yet Mao Zedong remains the most honored figure in the Chinese Communist Party. At one end of historic Tiananmen Square is Mao’s mausoleum, visited daily by large, respectful crowds.
    Repression continues
In the spirit of Mao, China’s present rulers continue to oppress intellectuals and other dissidents such as human-rights activist Liu Xiaobo. He was sentenced last month to 11 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power.” His offense: signing Charter 08, which calls on the government to respect basic civil and human rights within a democratic framework.

This is the thing people don't get until they experience it. I travelled to China for many years, first for tourism then as a press member. Initially I loved it. Environment beautiful (note this is back in early 2000's) Cities are vibrant, people are super friendly, generous and amazing. I remember one of my last official trips to Beijing (2010) was one of those when they bulldozed one of my old favourite neighbourhoods (in Fengtai) and made new, grey, square, blocks out of the whole thing. Mechanically. It was soul crippling. People made destitute being forced into block apartments when they used to have houses with vegetable gardens that sustained them. Last time, walking in with a camera, of course, as has happened so many times, some local police came up and told me to stop filming even as I interviewed a person who had given consent. I mentioned I had a press related visa, and Immediately it turned. Camera ripped out of my hands, escorted out of the area, set in a car, rough up, police station the whole nine yards. As you all know, you have to list an address of residence, in my case a family who I knew from previous, they were roughed up and the police moved my stuff to a "press hotel" (read, monitored hotel) and that family where I stayed, who I had known for years, I never heard from again. To this day I think about them and I hope they are fine but after so many attempts to find out, I still do not know.

Economically speaking, both Brazil and India are likely to surpass China within the next decade, if they aren't short sighted or succumb to infighting. And there are many reasons why companies and corporations are divesting from China in droves.
The World Trade Organization is considering the devaluation of the Yuan/RMB in the following year. Due to the refusal of the CCP to allow for an audit, when the the World Bank and International Monetary Fund levied the charge of Currency Manipulation on the People's Republic of China.

But we have our rights to live as we please

At times late at night it is unbearable to travel on the subway because of the stench odor permeating from so many of these people sleeping on the train. Yeah, many western towns and cities can look a little run down when you move away from their centres, but most of them are built to last and most will be knocked down before they come anywhere close to catastrophic failure.

I as a leftist I recognize that China's one party government is indeed very problematic and in fact very much terrible. It fuses the two worst aspects of communism and capitalism called authotarian capitalism. I also recognize that the US government has it's fair share of problems and isn't always fighting for the best interests of the majority of it's people. What I find baffling is how those two constantly get compared to one another. I guess that's due to Americans always needing a good guy and a bad guy. This is also why when someone critizes the US on the internet that the person in question must be loving China or Russia instead, which is something I often see on the english side of social media. But guess what: u can like neither of those three.
